POLKTON -- Mr. Donald P. Caudle, 62, died Thursday, April 5, 2001. Funeral 3pm Sunday, First Baptist, Indian Trail, East Campus, Marshville; burial Rocky Mount Church Cemetery. Visitation 7-8:30pm Saturday, Leavitt Funeral Home, entrusted.

Carothers, Robert Frank
ROCK HILL -- Mr. Robert Frank Carothers, 89, of 5056 Hampton Ridge Rd. passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer A.R.P. Church with Dr. John A. Basie and the Rev. Charles Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Born Dec. 25, 1911 in Pineville, NC, Mr. Carothers was the son of the late Ross Hicklin Carothers and Carrie Delia Bayne Carothers.

Mr. Carothers was a dairy farmer and a bush hogger. He was a member of the Corinthian Lodge No. 416 and Ebenezer A.R.P. Church.

Survivors are his wife, Bertie Biggers Carothers; son, Michael Parks of Rock Hill; four sisters, Anabell C. Riggins of Greenville, Sara C. Stacks of Lancaster, Delia C. Parker and Alice C. Morrison, both of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Memorial Association, c/o Martha Elliott, 775 Bridgewood Dr., Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel is serving the family of Mr. Carothers.

Helms, Floyd Edward "ED"
ROCK HILL -- Mr. Floyd Edward "ED" Helms, Jr., 59, of 1030 Christopher Circle, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, April 7, 2001 at the Chapel of Bass Funeral Home with the Rev. Lewis Vehaun and the Rev. Marty Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the Chatham Hill Memorial Park in Cheraw, SC.

Born in Rock Hill, SC he was the son of the late Kathleen B. Brounson Helms. Mr. Helms worked for Suburban Propane Gas Co. for 31 years, he was a District Manager. Mr. Helms was an Army Veteran serving in the Dominican Republic. Mr. Helms was of the Christian Faith.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Cagle Helms; two sons, Mark Andrew Helms of Lancaster, and Eric Matthew Helms of Mauldin; father, Floyd E. Helms, Sr. of Bamberg; step-mother, Bertha H. Helms; and two brothers, David Helms and Lester Helms, both of Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends 1 hour after the service at Bass Funeral Home, Saturday, April 7, 2001.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association South Carolina Affiliate, Inc., Piedmont Region, 300 E. Henry Street, Suite 101, Spartanburg, SC 29302-2630.

Vestal, Inez A.
ROCKINGHAM -- Inez A. Vestal, 88, died Thursday, April 5, 2001. Graveside services 4pm Sunday, Richmond County Memorial Park. Visitation 2-3:30pm Sunday, at Watson-King Funeral Home.

Warner, Joseph L.
ROCKINGHAM -- Joseph L. Warner, 81, died April 4, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Roberdel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Richmond County Memorial Park. Carter Funeral Home is in charge.

Ledford, Annie Ophelia
SHELBY -- Annie Ophelia Ledford, 85, of 619 South Dekalb St. died April 5, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Ernest Arnold and Rev. Larry Franks officiating. Burial will be in Rehobeth United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Ledford was born in Cleveland County. She was a homemaker and an avid gardener. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Ledford; two brothers, Luther Glenn Haynes and A.V. "Bud" Haynes.

Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Gettys of the home, and Jewel Wineland and husband, Bob of LaPorte, IN; a sister, Marjorie Haynes Ashley and husband, James "Jr." of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 606 South Dekalb St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is serving the family.

Smith, George Walter
STANLEY -- Mr. George Walter Smith, Jr., 95, a resident of the Stanley Total Living Center, died April 5, 2001 at his residence.

He was a native of Gaston County, having resided in Florida for over 40 years, and returning with his wife to Gaston County in 1989. He was son of the late George Walter and Etta Jenkins Smith. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served with the 22nd Bomb Group in the South Pacific. His group was among the first to see combat against the Japanese in February of 1942. He was decorated for combat in the East Indies, Paupa, New Guinea, and Bismark, Archipelago. He was honorably discharged from service in 1945. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Holly.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Holland Thompson Smith.

Survivors include a niece, Evelyn McCarver Rockett of Gastonia; a step-daughter, Julia Holland Thompson; a step-grandchild, Melonee Lee of Mt. Holly; two brothers-in-law, David Smith and wife, Nancy of Mt. Holly, Thomas Holland and wife, Frances of Mt. Holly; and several cousins.

A graveside service conducted by the Rev. Wilson P. Rhoton will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Mt. Holly Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Stanley Total Living Center, P.O. Box 489, Stanley, NC 28164.

Sellers, Joe T.
STATESVILLE -- Joe T. Sellers, 72, died April 4, 2001. Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at First A.R.P. Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Nicholson Funeral Home is in charge.

Whitson, Danie R.
STATESVILLE -- Danie R. Whitson, 47, died April 4, 2001. Funeral is 3 p.m. Saturday at Nicholson Funeal Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Nicholson Funeral Home is in charge.

Smith, Dovie Parks
TAYLORSVILLE -- Mrs. Dovie Parks Smith, 97, died Friday, April 6, 2001. Funeral 11 am Monday, First Baptist Church, Taylorsville. Visitation at the church Sunday evening 6:30-8:30pm. Chapman Funeral Home entrusted with plans.

Richards, Martha Abernethy
WAXHAW -- Mrs. Martha Abernethy Richards, 87, of Waxhaw, died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the Union Regional Medical Center. Born October 8, 1913 in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Elva Letitia Abernethy. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mr. William `Bill` Tyson in 1961.

Mrs. Richards held numerous administrative positions in the Waxhaw United Methodist Church, from 1938 to 2000, she taught Sunday School at the church, she was past president of the Waxhaw Women's Club, former president of the Waxhaw PTA and a lead member of the Busy Bees in Waxhaw. Some of her activities and hobbies include gardening, sewing and cooking.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 8, 2001 at 3 pm from the Waxhaw United Methodist Church by Rev. James Mackey. Burial will follow in the Waxhaw City Cemetery. The family will have an informal drop-in for anyone who would like to come by the home, 616 Old Providence Road, Waxhaw, from 6-8 pm Saturday evening. The family will also receive friends Sunday from 1:30 to 2:30 pm at the church. The family suggest memorials be made to the Waxhaw United Methodist Church, PO Box 9, Waxhaw, NC 28173.

Mrs. Richards is survived by her husband, H. Jerome Richards of the home; sons Mr. Rob Tyson of Columbia, SC and Mr. Harry Tyson of Jacksonville, NC; daughter Gluyas Holliday of Waxhaw; grandchildren Charlie and Sarah Holliday, both of Waxhaw; brother, J.W. Abernethy of Mt. Holly, NC; and sisters Dorothy Abernethy and Laura Howell, both of Charlotte. She was predeceased by brothers Richard H. Abernethy and Walter C. Abernethy, Sr.

The McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is caring for the family of Mrs. Richards.

Shasteen, Mildred Mims "Millie"
YORK -- Mildred Mims "Millie" Shasteen, 76, of 2159 Old Hwy 321, died March 29, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC.

Memorial Service is 3 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Bratton Funeral Home, York, SC, with Rev. Donald Beau officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service.

Born in Berkely County, SC, Mrs. Shasteen was the daughter of the late James A. Mims and Lila Bruorton and widow of Gerald Olin Shasteen. She was a retired teller from Home Federal Savings and Loan.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Brown of York, SC; two step-sons, Steven Shasteen of Gaffney, SC, and Jerry Shasteen of Redding, CA; two brothers, James Mims of Charleston, SC, and Joe Mims of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Virginia M. Cowan and Winona M. Knight, both of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bratton Funeral Home is serving the Shasteen family.

Gary T. Lee

Gary T. Lee, 60, of Bolivia, North Carolina, died Thursday, April 21, 2005 at his home, surrounded by family, after a long illness.

Born December 10, 1944, in Claremont, New Hampshire Gary grew up in Hudson, before serving his country in Vietnam. Gary returned home to reside in Londonderry with his wife and two sons until 1983, moving to Springfield, New Hampshire and residing there until 2003, before retiring to Bolivia, North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Linda S. Lee of Bolivia, North Carolina; son, Thomas P. Lee and wife Allison and two grandsons, Jeremy and Tucker, son Timothy Lee and wife Jennifer, and granddaughter, Sophia; his parents, Fred and Ruth Lee all of Springfield, New Hampshire, two brothers, Richard Lee and Alan Lee, both of Florida and one sister, Sharon Lee of Deering, New Hampshire. Gary is also survived by numerous other family members and close friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 7, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Town Hall in Springfield, New Hampshire. A potluck luncheon will follow the service in the same location.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 402, Bolivia, North Carolina 28422.
