Hemphill, Samuel Mills
HICKORY -- Mr. Samuel Mills Hemphill, 82, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Memorial service is Friday, 11 AM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with Reverend Robert Shoffner and Reverend Deborah Michaels officiating. A graveside service will be at 10 AM in Oakwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Hickory Rotary Club and members of the Hickory Coffey Club. The family will receive friends following the Memorial Service at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Hemphill was a native of Gaston County, born May 21, 1919 to the late Laddie Mills and Ivah Mae Abernathy Hemphill. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was President of the Church Council. Mr. Hemphill had retired from his position as Treasurer and Financial Officer of Century Furniture, and was a veteran of World War II, a Retired Major of the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was a navigator. He was a graduate of Davidson College AB, did graduate work in Accounting, attended the Wharton School of Finance, and was a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Hemphill played Third Base during his college years, and was President of the 1966 Alumni Association. He was a member of the Board of Visitors, 1973 Trustee (Board of Trustees), member of NeUltra Society, and he was Phi Beta Cappa, graduating in 1939. He was President and member of the Hickory Rotary Club, he was a Paul Harris Fellow, President of United Way, Director of NorthWestern Bank and First Union National Bank, a member of the Hickory Coffey Club, the Hickory Sportsman Club, a past president and member of the Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, NC, and also a member of the Lake Hickory Country Club. From his years as a 3rd baseman at Davidson College, throughout the Army Air Force years in baseball, through years of tennis singles and doubles at the Hickory Foundation Community Center and many rounds of golf, Sam was an avid sports participant and fan.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Kathryn Frye Hemphill of the home; four children, Kathryn Glenn Hemphill Jones and her husband, Ronald, of Newland, NC, Steven Mills Hemphill and his wife, Cathleen, of Raleigh, NC, Ellen Raymer Hemphill of Chapel Hill, NC, and Samuel Todd Hemphill and his wife, Nancy, of Cary, NC; grandchildren Bonnie Hemphill, Mark Hemphill, Samuel Lopez-Barrantes, Aaron Lopez-Barrantes and Madison Raymer Hemphill; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Hugo Deaton, of Hickory, NC; along with seven nieces and two nephews.

Libby, Allan Jerome
Allan Jerome Libby, 75, of Concord, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Britthaven of Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Saturday, June 2, at Liberty Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Berry officiating. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-9 at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road.
Born March 7, 1926 in Detroit, MI, Mr. Libby was a son of the late George Remick Libby and Olive Jane Libby. He was US Navy, World War II veteran, having served in the Seabees in the Philippines. He had retired as a heavy equipment mechanic with McDevitt & Street and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. His wife of 52 years, Tessie Eileen Ford Libby preceded him in death on March 5, 1999.
Surviving are his children, Charles Arnold Libby and his wife, Cynthia Jane of Las Vegas, NV, Sharon Joan Haggard and her husband, Philip Lee of Phoenix, AZ, Leslie Allan Libby and his wife, Barbara Denise of Charlotte, Dennis Duane Libby and his wife, Cheryl Diane of Oceanside, CA, and Janice Elaine Splawn and her husband, Gary Dean, and Ruth Ellen Bennett and her husband, Jackie Dale, all of Concord; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Libby and Randall Libby, both of Michigan; and four sisters, Jane Harrell of California, Joan Barringer of Florida, and Janice Bucheit and Virginia Tedder, both of Michigan.

Hoover, Margaret `Sis` Louise Huntley
CHERAW -- Mrs. Margaret `Sis` Louise Huntley Hoover, 83, died May 29, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, May 31, 2001 at St. David's Episcopal Church, followed by interment in Old St. David's Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.
Born February 16, 1918, in Cheraw, she was the daughter of the late Lillian Wells Huntley and Preston Brooks Huntley. A lifelong member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Cheraw, `Sis` was past president and active in the St. David's Episcopal Church Women and a 75-year member of the St. David's Choir. She was a founding member of the Susan McIver Chapter and was later a member of the Bishop Thomas Chapter. As chairman of the Interested Party Committee, she organized whatever was needed for newcomers, the sick, and otherwise infirm.
The Poet Laureate of family and friends, she was a consummate hostess and epitomized southern hospitality. Her cinnamon rolls were always a tradition for the St. David's Bazaar, and given with love for all graduations, baptisms and confirmations. She was a member of the St. David's Society and past president of the Cheraw Elementary PTA.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret Hoover Dixon, Isle of Palms, Mary and Daniel Trompeter of Atlanta, GA, and Leila and Stephen Holmes of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, James Henry Hoover, Jr. and her husband, James Henry Hoover, Sr.

Crudup, Lucile C.
Mrs. Lucile C. Crudup, 89, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Bryson City, NC, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Mrs. Crudup was born September 7, 1911 in Norman, Oklahoma, a daughter of the late Lloyd Chester McDaniel and Florence Ethel Stevenson McDaniel. She was a dedicated homemaker and moved from Mephis, TN to Bryson City, NC in the med 1960's. She was a member of Bryson City Presbyterian Church but had attended University City Methodist Church since she had lived in Charlotte the past 8 years.
Funeral services for Mrs. Crudup will be held private by the family.
Mrs. Crudup is survived by her four children, Mrs. Elizabeth Spacek and husband, Woodrow of Dime Box, TX, Mrs. Jeanne Bowman and her husband, Mack of Alexander, NC, Ed Crudup and his wife, Shirley of Madison, NC, and Mrs. Carol Estes and her husband, Jerry of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Patti Simmons, Susan Simmons, Lisa Kennedy, George Bowman, Ed Crudup, III, Leslie Rochester, Jennifer Paquette, Dana Nott, Travis Estes and Jason Estes; 17 great grandchildren, Brian Brock, Janell Brock, Emily Brock, Monica Crook, Jason Jennette, Issac Jennette, Tiffany Kennedy, Benjamin Kennedy, Emily Bowman, Grant Bowman, Courtney Crudup, Hunter Rochester, Abigail Rochester, Bailey Nott, Jack Nott, Samara Paquette and Seriann Paquette; and one sister, Mrs. Irene Merson of Lenexia, KS. Mrs. Crudup was preceded in death by her husband, Edward W. Crudup; two grandchildren, Gregory Bowman and Katherine Crudup; and one sister, Vivian Paul.

Brown, Mabel Finlayson
Mabel Finlayson Brown, 87, of New Bern, NC and formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern, NC.
Mrs. Brown was an active member of Third Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Mizpah Chapter #36 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James Calvin Brown; one son, James E. Brown of Myrtle Beach, SC; one daughter, Carolyn Brown Latham of New Bern, NC; one brother, Robert Finlayson of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Myrtle Tant of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren, Gregg Brown of Charlotte, Beth Brown of Lewisburg, NC, Robert Brown of Richfield, NC, Charles Brown of Fuquay-Varina, NC, Brad Latham of Washington, DC, Jim Latham of Greenville, NC, and Dr. John Latham of Los Angeles, CA; as well as six great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern on Friday, June 1, from 7-9 PM.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in New Bern at 2 PM, with the Reverend Shirley Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern.

A native of Indian Land, SC, Mrs. Ratterree was a daughter of the late Arthur Stephen Giles and Isabell Railey Giles. Mrs. Ratterree was a retiree of Everlock, Inc. in Pineville, with 23 years of service, and also a member of Roddey Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years, David F. Ratterree, Sr. of the home; her son, David F. Ratterree, Jr. of Rock Hill; her daughter, Janet R. Hearn of Catawba, SC; her brother, Arthur Ray Giles of Fort Mill, SC; as well as three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Ethel D. Crowell, of 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Asbury Care Center.
A private graveside service was held Wednesday morning at Oakwood Cemetery, with Pastor Steve James officiating.
Mrs. Crowell was a retired school teacher at Monroe High, Anson Senior High and East Mecklenburg High. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, a member of Colonial Dames, and great granddaughter of Caroline Burgwin and Judge Thomas S. Ashe of Wadesboro. Mrs. Crowell was born in Rock Hill, SC on September 19, 1912, a daughter of the late Hamilton Irvine DePass of Camden, SC, and the late Ethel Marshall DePass of Wadesboro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David J. Crowell.
Survivors include her daughter, Miss Margaret Marshall Crowell of Fall River, MA; one son, Mr. Jeff Crowell of Wadesboro; one sister, Mrs. Nida Mosley of Raleigh; and two grandchildren, Catherine Crowell and Dede Crowell, both of Wadesboro.
