BRONX, N.Y. — Ms. Trilby Borders Crowe, 63, of 169 Cypress Ave. died Sunday, May 7, 2002, at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, N. Y. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Washington Missionary Baptist Church cemetery. Rev. Denorris Byers will officiate.

J.L. Farris
SHELBY — Mrs. J.L. Farris, 87, of 118 Morton St. died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at her home. She was a retired receptionist from Lily Mill Co. She was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church and Wesley Fellow-ship Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Lander Farris and her parents, Joseph F. and Minnie Richards Carter. She is survived by her daughter and a son-in-law, Jane Farris and Michael Mayhew of Sherills Ford and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Inez Bridges of Shelby, Sallie Lou Davis of Kings Mountain and Maryland and Buck Dover of Shelby. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Cemeterywith the Rev. Gervase C. Hitch officiating. Memorials may be made to Lafayette Street United Methodist Church at 1420 S. Lafayette St., Shelby NC 28152. Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Miller
FOREST CITY — Mrs. Hazel Stalnaker Miller, 92, of 154 N. Woodland Ave., died Wednesday morning, May 8, 2002, at White Oak Manor in Rutherfordton. One of 10 children, she was born in Simpsonville, S.C., to the late Benjamin A. Stalnaker and Elmina Adams Stalnaker on March 20, 1910. The family later moved to Rutherford County, where she grew up. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Henry Miller Sr. She is survived by one sister, Frances Stalnaker Howe; one son, Joe H. Miller Jr. and daughter-in-law, Juanita Mayse Miller; one daughter, Anna Miller Hancock; grandchildren, Melissa Miller Heeg and husband, Tim Heeg, Joseph Henry Miller III, Amy Abernathy Brogdon and husband, Ralph Brogdon; great-grandchildren, Sharon Danielle Kyle, Charles Abernathy Kyle and Kristen Taylor Miller; stepgrandchildren, Christopher Brian Heeg, Deborah Heeg Klahn and Eric Francis Heeg; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Forest City at 2 p.m. on Friday. Services will be officiated by Dr. Barry K. Keys, Revs. J. Anthony Spencer and Clayton “Bud” Stalnaker, a nephew of Mrs. Miller. Private interment will follow in the Wesley Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Harris. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 211 West Main St., Forest City, NC 28043. The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

FOREST CITY — Mr. James Harlan Melton, 79, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at his home. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Robert Walker
GASTONIA — Mr. Robert Louis Walker, 80, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. Born Feb. 5, 1922, in Macon, Ga., he was a son of the late Robert G. Walker and Merlessie E. Walker. At an early age, he joined the Eskridge Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Walker. He leaves to mourn, two daughters, Marion Walker and Regina Walker, both of Newark, N.J.; four sisters, Ella Lee Sherman and Josie W. Smith, both of Philadelphia, Addie Blondene Walker of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Flossie W. Lipscomb of Shelby; a brother-in-law, Carson Lipscomb Jr.; eight grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Cleveland Memorial Park and Mausoleum Chapel with Dr. S.A. Raper officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park Veteran Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1101 Frederick St., Shelby. Dockery’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Borders
SHELBY — Mrs. Annie Ruth Matthews Borders, 73, of 140 Thamon Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Kings Mountain Hospital. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Washington Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Zeno T. Borders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Genesis Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

James Brindle
MOORESBORO — Mr. James Harlow Brindle, 73, of Island Ford Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at McDowell Nursing Center. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Jack Pennington, Boyd Lattimore, Dale Welch and Bob Brindle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside. Memorials may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1250 Hyland Blvd., Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY 10305-1946.

William Hill
SHELBY — Mr. William Duke Hill, 82, of 1513 Rhyne St., died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Ruther-ford County, he was a son of the late Jake P. and Norma Phillips Hill. He became a resident of Cleveland County in October 1945. He was owner of Country Store and Hills Mobile Home Park until his retirement in 1990. He was a graduate of Cliffside High School. He was a past member of Central United Methodist Church for 40 years and served as president of Hoey Bible Class. He was currently a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. He served in the Army during World War II. He served in Africa, Anzio Beach Head in Italy and was in the invasion of France in August 1944. He also served in Germany and was in Salsburg, Austria, at the close of World War II. He was a first sergeant in Hq. Co. 601 T.D. Bn. of the 3rd Infantry Division. He was separated from the armed forces Oct. 12, 1945. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Bowers Hill, who died in 1973 after 30 years together; a brother, Pete Hill; and two sisters, Helen H. MacCurry and Hazel H. Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Mary Freeman Hill of the home; two sisters, Ruby H. Jarrett of Newton and Dot H. Huskey of Newport News, Va.; a sister-in-law, Louise Hill; two stepsons, Joe Godfrey and his wife, Susan, of Los Angeles and Ernest Godfrey and his wife, Kim, of Shelby; two granddaughters, Sarah and Leanna Godfrey, both of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews and friends. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Lafayette Street United Methodist Church; or Hospice of Cleveland County; or a charity of the donor’s choice. Cleveland Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

‘J.C.’ Ledbetter
CLIFFSIDE — Mr. John Charles “J.C.” Ledbetter, 71, of 2673 Ferry Road, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at his home. A graveside service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Brooks officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. CHERRYVILLE — Mr. John Helgestad Jr., 40, of 905 Requa Road, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Kohnen officiating. The family will receive friends two hours before the service at Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 950 W. Amy Parker
BLACKSBURG, S.C. — Mrs. Amy Lucille Parker, 86, of 1137 S. Charleston St., died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the home of her sister. Services will be Thursday at noon at Hopewell Baptist Church with Dr. Charlie Barnard and the Rev. Billy Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home of Hildred Crotts, 1103 S. Charleston St., Blacksburg. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Baptist Church Building Fund, 511 Old Chester Road, Blacksburg, SC 29702; or to Hospice of South Carolina, 407 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, SC 29340. James Waters
SHELBY — Mr. James A. Waters, 79, of 423 Leander St., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Zeb Vance and Fannie Crowe Waters. He was owner and operator of Shelby Barber Shop for 53 years in the same location. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby, where he was a former deacon for over 20 years and former Sunday School Superintendent for 27 years. He served in the Army during World War II and received five battle stars. He is survived by his wife, Golden Barrett Waters of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Steve Costner of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Z.V. Jr. and Helen Waters of Kings Mountain; a granddaughter and her husband, Libby and Bill Brooks of Shelby; a grandson and his wife, Bert and Leah Costner of Shelby; a grandson, PFC Chris Costner of Okinawa, Japan; and a great-grandson, Trey Costner of Shelby. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Franks and Dr. J.M. Ezell officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 S. Dekalb St., Shelby, NC 28150.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Mr. James H. “Jim” Goode, 91, of Rolling Green Village, formerly of Avondale, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Rolling Green Village Health Care Facility. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Haynes Memorial Baptist Church in Henrietta, with the Revs. Travis Smith and William Stroud officiating. Burial will be in Cliffside Cemetery. FOREST CITY — Mr. Ervin Andrew Macopson, 81, of 257 Marshall St., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home.

‘Bootie’ Hudson
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Betty “Bootie” Jean Van Dyke Hudson, 72, of 307 S. Mulberry St., died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at her home. Born April 4, 1930, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late David Luther and Alice Barber Black Van Dyke. She retired from PPG in Shelby, after 30 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel “Pete” Reece Hudson; and a brother, Robert Van Dyke. She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Hudson of Cherryville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Linda Hudson, Hugh and Jill Hudson, Rick and Freida Hudson all of Cherryville; two sisters, Mary Sue Costner of Bessemer City and Lillie Mae Leatherman of Cherryville; six grandchildren, Lance, Chance, Ryan, Wesley, Brooke and Holly Hudson; and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in City Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Holtsclaw officiating. The family will receive friends at Carpenters Funeral Home from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. before the service and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. FOREST CITY — Mrs. Alline Lattimore Camp, 78, of 665 Harris Henrietta Road, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Rutherford Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Harris, with Dr. Elwood Roberts officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. William McClain
SHELBY — Mr. William McClain, 47, departed this life on Friday, May 3, 2002, at home with his loved ones. Born on April 13, 1955, in Cleveland County, he was the son of Ida McClain and the late Theodore McClain. He was a member of New Start Fellowship Church. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sherry McClain. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Tasnee McClain; three sons, Michael McClain, Marcus McClain and Elliott McClain; three brothers, Thomas McClain, Milton McClain and Terry McClain of Shelby; three sisters, Shirley Whitener and Edna Mitchell of Shelby and Rosetta Mitchell of Mooresboro; two grandchildren, Taya and Devion McClain; two special nephews, Timothy Huskey and Randy Huskey; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Genesis Chapel, with the Rev. Nathaniel Crosby officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Webb Memorials Lawns. Genesis Funeral Service & Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Mrs. Marie Godfrey Hughes, 83, of 1350 Sleepy Hill Drive, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Cool Springs Cemetery in Forest City, with the Rev. John Perry officiating. The family will be at the home of Judy Ammons, 173 Sassafrass Hill Drive, Rutherfordton. Crowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Smith
SHELBY — Mr. Clarence “Coffee” Smith, 82, , of 3426 W. Stagecoach Trail, went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, May 4, 2002, at his home. A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he was born Aug. 21, 1919. He was retired from the North Carolina State Department of Transportation. He was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater for which he received a Purple Heart. He was also a member of the Camp Call Masonic Lodge No. 534. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Hester Guy Smith and a brother, Grady Smith. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lois Melton Smith of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby Jean and Kenneth Cochran of Rutherfordton; four brothers and sisters-in-law, E. J. and Norma Smith and James and Ruth Barner, all of Pacolet, S.C., J.D. and Carolyn Smith of Shelby and Donald and Mozelle Barner of Rutherfordton; a sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Junior Wines of Spartanburg; a brother-in-law and his wife, Gene and Dede Melton of Shelby; a grandson and his wife, Jeffrey and Jennifer Cochran of Rutherfordton and a granddaughter and her husband, Amy and David McCraw of Rutherfordton. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church with the Revs. Don McSwain and Alton Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
