Alice Lorena Bennett Plyler
Alice Lorena Bennett Plyler, 84, of Asheville, died Friday, Nov. 28.
She was the daughter of the late Robert and Cora Bennett of Macon County.
Mrs. Plyler was born on April 5, 1919 and was a graduate of Pfieffer Junior College and Western Carolina University.
Similar to Catherine Marshall, whose autobiography "Christy" details the life of a teacher in Western North Carolina, Alice began teaching in a one-room school house in the Otter Creek section of Nantahala and retired from Swannanoa Elementary School in the Buncombe County School System.
She was a member of the Elkwood United Methodist Church where she held many positions on the church's board and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
She held many awards for teacher's excellences.
She is survived by her husband, William Frank Plyler; three sons, William Frank Plyler II of Manteo, Gary Michael Plyler of Georgetown, S.C. and Robert Hansel Plyler of Asheville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Morris Funeral Home, Merrimon Ave.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the Chapel of Morris Funeral Home with the Rev. Enoch Ball officiating.
Burial will follow at Lotla Methodist Church Cemetery in Franklin, NC.
Rev. Donna Cobb will officiate at the graveside service.
Arrangements are being made by Morris Funeral Home.
Patsy Hun Quidley
Patsy Hun Quidley, 55, of Buxton, died Friday, Oct. 31 in her residence.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Soonae Parks Hun and the widow of the William S. "Sonny" Quidley, Jr.
She was co-owner of Sonny's Waterside Restaurant and Quidley Trailer Park.
She was a member of Lighthouse Assembly of God.
Surviving are two daughters, Babette Q. Ebert of Buxton and LeeAnn Quidley Canning of Hatteras; two sons, William S. "Sonny" Quidley II and Jonathan Walter Charles Quidley, both of Buxton; two sisters, Lily Cabinatan of Wainae, Hi; devoted friend Donna Swain of Frisco and four grandchildren, Cutler Hayden Ebert, Jasmine Leilani Quidley, John Patrick Canning III and Kaleigh Ella Canning.
A funeral service was held in Lighthouse Assembly of God on Nov. 5 by Rev. David Waterfield.
Burial was in the Quidley Family Cemetery in Buxton.
Twiford's Island Chapel Hatteras assisted the Quidley family.
Florence Bowen Swartz
Florence Bowen Swartz, 73, died Friday, Nov. 28, at her residence.
Born on Hogg Island, Va., she was the daughter of the late Eli and Grace Robbins Bowen and the wife of Robert "Bob" Swartz of the home.
She was a long-time resident of Frisco, a member of the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church and co-owner of Swartz Fisheries Inc.
She recently moved to Elizabeth City.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Nannette Zepp of Newport News, Va. and Delores Ann Belvin of New Port Richie, Fla.; and one brother, Irving Bowen of Nassawadox, Va.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30 at Laurel Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Cullop of Cape Hatteras Baptist Church officiating.
The family will receive friends at 324 Planters Run Drive in Elizabeth City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, POB 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Elwyn 'Gruffy' Walker
Elwyn "Gruffy" Walker, 81, of Bells Island Road, Currituck, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, at his home.
Born in Currituck, he was the son of the late Ernest Wiley and Lydia Ansell Walker and the husband of Pauline Dunton Walker of the home.
He was owner/operator of Currituck Service Center for 45 years and a member of the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire and Rescue.
He was an active member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, having served as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, choir member, and building and grounds committee member.
He donated many hours toward building the new church Fellowship Hall.
Also surviving are two daughters, Patricia Walker Smith of Currituck and Diana Walker Cratt of Williamston; two brothers, Elmer Walker of Moyock and Edward Walker of Barco; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
A brother, Ernest Walker of Wanchese, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Oct. 11 at Twiford's Memorial Chapel with Rev. Charles Wellons officiating.
Burial followed in the Dunton Cemetery in Aydlett.

Allen Harrison Watkins
Allen Harrison Watkins, Sr., 97, died Dec. 6 at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.
He was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church.
He graduated from Sewanee University and was an aviation enthusiast and a licensed pilot since 1923.
He was a member of Sedgefield Country Club and member emeritus of Southern Seniors Golf Association.
During his service in World War II he was the Base Commander of Coastal Patrol Base #16 in Manteo.
He had a long career in the textile industry.
He is survived by his sons, John A. Watkins, Allen H. "Buddy" Watkins, Jr., both of the Outer Banks, and David C. Watkins of Atlanta; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Guilford Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the N.C. Humane Society, 4527 W. Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, N.C. 27409.
Hanes-Lineberry Chapel handled the arrangements.
Sandra Catherine Wilson
Sandra Catherine Wilson, 56, died on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at her residence.
Born in Tarboro, She was the daughter of the late William Wilson and Mary Grimmer Wilson of Tarboro.
She was a registered nurse for Edgecomb County Hospital and later worked for the NCDOT and was a certified EMT.
Also surviving are one son, Warren Langley, Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL and Manteo; one sister, Joyce Wilson of Maryland; one brother, Jerry Wilson of Taboro; four grandchildren; and significant other, William H. "Buster" Braddy of Manteo.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo.
