Mabel Balance Creef
Mabel Balance Creef, 84, of Manteo and formerly of Elizabeth City, died Feb. 4 at her residence. Mrs. Creef, born in Hatteras, was a retired speed hand for the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill and was a Methodist. She was the daughter of the late Clarence D. Balance, Sr. and the late Nola Willis Balance and was the widow of the late Alvin "Little Bud" Creef.
Mrs. Creef is survived by a daughter, Gloria C. Long of Elizabeth City; a son, Rodney Balance, Sr. of Manns Harbor; two step-daughters, Garnet Duncan of Elizabeth City and Joyce Tinker of St. Louis, MO; a sister, Beuna Balance of Elizabeth City; a brother, Royce Balance of Chesapeake, VA; 14 grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A graveside service was held at the Westlawn Cemetery, Elizabeth City on Feb. 6 with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating.
Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo is assisting the family with arrangements.
Alma Owens Doty
Alma Owens Doty, 90, formerly a resident of Manteo, died Jan. 7 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Washington, N.C. to the late Valentine and Martha Alexander Owens and was the widow of A.C. Stratton, Jr. and Dale E. Doty. She was a member of the Order of Rebekah's Lodge of Manteo.
She is survived by a son, Timothy J. Stratton of Ijamsville, MD; three sisters, Thelma Perry of Hampton, VA, and Marie Ratchford and Clara Mae Shannon, both of Manteo; a brother, Bobby Owens of Manteo; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, A.C. Stratton III, a grandson, A.C. Stratton IV, a brother Leon Owens, and a stepmother, Clara Owens.
A funeral service was held on Jan. 16 at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo by the Rev. Jim Davenport. Burial was in the Manteo Cemetery.
Richard M. Duckett
Richard M. Duckett, 64, of Kill Devil Hills, passed away Jan. 11 in his home.
Born in Oelwein, Iowa, he married
Marion Brown in 1963. Together they had three daughters. Early in life, he joined the U.S. Navy and was a plank owner of the USS Mars. He served for four years. After leaving the Navy, he started work for Unisys Corporation. During his time with Unisys, he lived in Woodbridge, VA, Burnsville, MN, and Sterling, VA. He retired from Unisys Corporation after 28 years. He and his wife started a business in Clarksville, VA in 1990 called The Little Retreat. After 10 years there, they retired to Kill Devil Hills. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid bowler.
Survivors include his wife, Marion, of Kill Devil Hills; three daughters, Pattie Duckett of Salem, VA, Debi Duckett of South Boston, VA and Kristi Mueller of Ridgeland, MS; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Jenkins Talent; his father, Gerald Duckett; and his sisters, Barbara Joan Foster and Marilyn Duckett.
A memorial service was held Jan. 17 in Twiford's Funeral Chapel in Manteo with Rev. Brad Bradshaw officiating.
Twiford Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
Alma Austin Everett
Alma Austin Everett, 83, of 5978 Caratoke Highway, Poplar Branch, died Jan. 7, in the Outer Banks Hospital.
Born in Currituck County, she was the daughter of the late Pell and Lela Hayman Austin.
She was a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Zella Ann Brown of Poplar Branch; two sisters, Louise Austin of Poplar Branch and Grace A. Meade of Virginia Beach; four brothers, Milfred Austin of Poplar Branch, Warren Austin of Barco, Harry Austin of Shiloh and Gene Austin of Elizabeth City; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 11 at the Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City. Burial followed in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Albert ``Al" John Ficik
Albert ``Al" John Ficik, 71, died Dec. 5 at an Elizabeth City hospital.
Born in Bayonne, NJ, he was the son of the late John and Mary Gnip Ficik and the widower of Gwennessa Waibel Ficik.
He was a retired commercial electrician. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the Colington Volunteer Fire Department. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He is survived by two sons, Carl Ficik of Albuquerque, NM and Allan Ficik of Sleepy Hollow, NY; two sisters, Mary Cauwels of Fairlawn, NJ and Helen Rogow of Emerson, NJ: two brothers, John Ficik of Toms River, NJ and Robert Ficik of Colington Harbor. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Chrissie.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Colington United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Pitsch. A reception for the family will be held at the church following the service. The cremains will be buried in the George Washington Cemetery in Paramus, NJ.

Larry Ward Gibbs
Larry Ward Gibbs, 65, died at an Outer Banks medical facility Dec. 16.
Born in Port Jefferson, NY, he was the son of the late Hallett Ward Gibbs and Meatrice C. Gibbs and the husband of Betty Flowers Gibbs.
He was disabled and retired from the United States Coast Guard.
Also surviving are two sons, Ricky Ward Gibbs and Sonny Lane Gibbs, both of Wilmington; two sister, Norma G. Gibbs of Grimesland, NC and Carolyn G. Williford of Englehard, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at Twiford's Colony Chapel Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in the Manteo Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, P.O. Box 1934, Manteo, NC 27954; The Food Pantry at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 787, Manteo, or to the charity of one's choice.
Edward Lewis Goodwin
Edward Lewis Goodwin, 79, died Dec. 23 at an Elizabeth City medical facility.
Born in Nichols, NY, he was the son of the late Walter Lewis Goodwin and the late Lena Pearl Mills Goodwin and the husband of Ada Mae Wright Goodwin of the home.
He was a retired Navy radioman, a radio and television repairman and worked at Seascape Security. He was a member of the Dare County Radio Control Flyers and a ham radio operator. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked in the Pacific as a radioman and gunner and Catalina "Black Cat" flying boats.
Also surviving are three daughters, Melody Demarest and Michelle Suri, both of North Carolina and Melissa Alphonse of Minnesota; six sons, Roby Goodwin and Danny Goodwin, both of New Jersey, Steve Goodwin of Pennsylvania, David Goodwin of Washington, Timmy Goodwin of California and Chris Goodwin of North Carolina; one sister, Junia Oakley of New York; one brother, Charles Goodwin of New York; and 13 grandchildren.
A visitation was held at Twiford's Colony Chapel Dec. 29. Burial will take place at the Nichols Cemetery in Nichols, NY at a later date.
