Wallace Richard Gray, Jr.
Wallace Richard Gray, Jr., 29, died on Jan. 22 at an Avon Medical Center. Mr. Gray was born in Elizabeth City and was a painter for the West Wade Construction Company. He was a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church and a graduate of Cape Hatteras High School. He was the son of Wallace Richard Gray, Sr. of Avon and Cherri O'Neal Quidley of Buxton.
Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Jessica Leigh Price of Raleigh; paternal grandfather Willard G. Gray of Avon and maternal grandmother, Loretta O'Neal of Buxton.
A funeral service will be held on Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church with Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater officiating. Burial will take place in the Scarborough Family Cemetery, Avon.
Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras assisted the family with the arrangements.
Grey Griggs
Grey Smith Griggs, 78, of Southern Shores died Dec. 28 in Elizabeth City.
Born in Winnsboro, S.C., she was the daughter of the late William Rogers and Zulee Funderburke Smith and the widow of Brantley E. Griggs, Sr.
She was a retired teacher with Camden County Public Schools. She was a member of Duck United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Jane Hand Moseley of Southern Shores and Cynthia Grey Hand of Norfolk; a step-daughter, Elsie Griggs Pugh of Camden; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Dec. 30 in Duck United Methodist Church and officiated by the Rev. David Clift. A private burial followed in Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery.
Twiford's Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Griggs family.
Vera J. Hancock
Vera J. Hancock, 79, of Bartlesville, OK died Feb. 1 in Bartlesville. She was born in Manassa, CO to the late Christen Peter and Kate Estella Mortensen Jensen and was a retired administrative assistant to the Secretary of Defense in the United States Department of Defense.
Mrs. Hancock is survived by her husband, John Walden "Wally" Hancock of Bartlesville, OK; a daughter, Tamalie Hancock of Fort Smith, AK; two sons, Robert Brent Hancock and his wife Ann of Manteo and Barry Wood Hancock and his wife Sharon of Fort Wayne, IN; a sister, Wanda Adair of Logan, UT; five grandchildren, Shauna Marie Barker and husband, John of Richmond, VA, Jessie Renee Hancock and Lacey Kate Hancock, both of Manteo and Kealy Ostrom of Grabill, IN; and four great grandchildren, Christian Joseph and Caleb Daniel Barker, Isabella Jadyn Bartell, and John Jeremiah Hancock.
A graveside service will be conducted on Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. at the Midgett Family Cemetery, Manteo with President Jeff Jacobson officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Colony Chapel on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. and at other times at the residence of Robert and Ann Hancock, 155 Gareth Circle, Manteo, NC.
Patricia Evelyn Harris
Patricia Evelyn Harris, 64, died at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD Dec. 12.
Born in Passaic, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Horace Cromwell Davis and Evelyn Faria Davis and the wife of Charles Malcolm Harris of Manteo.
She was a registered nurse and a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church who enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She attended high school and college in Baltimore and St. Joseph's College in Maine, earning several college degrees.
Also surviving are two sisters, Dianne D. DeSmidt of Channahon, IL and Gwendalyn C. Jackson of Atlanta, GA.
A funeral mass was held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk Dec. 19 with Father Joseph Klaus officiating. Burial was in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk.

William Samuel Hauser
William Samuel Hauser, 76, died at an Outer Banks medical facility Jan. 24.
Born in Barbourville, KY, he was the son of the late Gustav Adolf Hauser and the late Mary Herzig Hauser and the widower of Virginia Woodson Hauser.
He lived on the Outer Banks since 1978 and was a retired investigator with the FBI. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are four sons, Bill Hauser of Ashburn, VA, Gus Hauser of Chattanooga, TN, Lewis Hauser of Springfield, VA and Clay Hauser of Kitty Hawk; two sisters, Louise Dizney of Jacksonville, NC and Betty Sanslow of Knoxville, TN; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at at All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Thomas E. Wilson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Leslie Moore Hooper
Captain Leslie Moore Hooper, 76, of Salvo, died Dec. 20 at his residence.
Born in Salvo, he was the name to the late Garland and Maria Hooper and was the husband of Elsie Hooper of the residence.
He was retired from the NCDOT, having served as a ferry boat captain for 33 years, was a member of the Salvo Assembly of God, a founding member of the Salvo Volunteer Fire Department, a volunteer driver for Dare County, and a member of the Friends of the Elizabeth II.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon Hooper Tillett of Wanchese and Bertie Kay Midgett of Waves; one son, Jimmie Hooper of Salvo; two brothers, Edward Hooper and William Hooper, both of Salvo; eight grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted on Dec. 23 at the Salvo Assembly of God by the Revs. Dwight Burrus, Ronnie Midgett and Susan Slater. Burial followed at the family cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 442, Hatteras, NC 27943.

George Arrington Howerton
George Arrington Howerton, 79, a lifelong resident of Suffolk, died Jan. 23 in Nags Head.
He was the son of the late George Arrington Howerton, Sr. and Julia Marlow Howell Howerton and the widower of Catherine Callis Howerton. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where in earlier years he served on the board of stewards and sang in the choir. In his younger years, he was a scoutmaster, a member of the Kiwanis Club, and was one of the founders and the first president of the Suffolk Cotillion Club.
He had retired as senior vice president of Southern Salt Co. Inc., in Norfolk and vice president of Norfolk Warehouse Distributing Co. Prior to that he had been president of Miller Peanut Co. Inc., of Virginia, a subsidiary of Kelling Nut Co. of Chicago, president of Virginia Peanut Co. of Zuni and vice president of Zuni Storage Corp. After his retirement he was appointed to the Suffolk Planning Commission and also worked on various civic projects in the Lakeside area of Suffolk.
He is survived by a sister, Kathryn H. Pittman of Franklin; a son, George A. Howerton III of Norfolk; a daughter, Linda H. Harper, her husband, Thomas R. Harper; grandsons Thomas R. Harper, Jr. and his wife Tami, and Britt Callis Harper, and great granddaughter Drew Catherine Harper, all of Nags Head; brother-in-law Linwood B. Callis Jr. and his wife, Martha J. Callis of Norfolk.
Funeral services were conducted Jan. 26 at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Becky W. Gwaltney and the Rev. Robert J. Parks, Jr. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
