Kathryn Marie Stocklin Bell

Kathryn Marie Stocklin Bell, 94, of Manteo died Feb. 3 in Nags Head. Mrs. Bell was born in Columbus, Ohio and was a retired church secretary. She was the daughter of the late Otto and Mary Trott Stocklin and the widow of Frank Bell. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Miller.

Mrs. Bell is survived by two sons, Donald Frank Bell of Philadelphia, PA and Robert Paul Bell of Indianapolis, IN; nine grandchildren, two of which are Vickie White of Manteo and Lisa Rhodes of Kill Devil Hills and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Washington Park North on Feb. 6. Entombment followed in the Washington Park North Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN.

Barton Riley Brown

Barton Riley Brown, 58, of Manteo died Jan. 18 at his residence. Mr. Brown was born in Los Angeles, California and was a retired state traffic officer with the California Highway Patrol. Mr. Brown was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary where he taught classes. He worked part-time with Manteo Marine. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard and loved fishing and the ocean and held an interest in aviation.

Mr. Brown was the son of Mary Adams Brown of Oceanside, Ca and the late James Harlan Brown and the husband of Patricia Trautman Brown.

Besides his wife surviving are one daughter, Amy Brown and one son, Michael Brown, both of Manteo. He was predeceased by two brothers, James Craig Brown and Brian Adams Brown.

Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the California Highway Patrol Widows and Orphans Fund, 2030 V. Street, Sacramento, Ca 95818, or Feline Hope Animal Shelter, 843 Herbert Perry Road, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949, or Dare County SPCA P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954 or the charity of one's choice.

Twiford's Colony Chapel Manteo, NC is assisting the Brown family.

Jerald Wayne Bundy

Jerald Wayne "Jerry" or "Jack" Bundy, 68, of Rodanthe, died Saturday, Dec. 6 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born in Elizabeth City, he was the son of the late Leland William and Earle Virginia Hall Bundy and the husband of Alice Midgett Bundy of the residence.

He Bundy was the retired owner of West Kempsville Mechanical, a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Norfolk, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean conflict.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jennifer Mourino of Rodanthe; two sons, Jerald Wayne Bundy, Jr. of Chesapeake, Va. and Jeffrey Bundy of North Carolina; four grandchildren; and several stepchildren and step-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo by the Rev. Ronnie Midgett.

Burial will follow at the Manteo Cemetery.

Parker Cartwright

Self-described optimistic realist Parker Sherlock Cartwright, 14, died Jan. 19 from the effects of West Nile Encephalitis. He was the son and youngest child of Landra S. and Randy M. Cartwright of Kill Devil Hills. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his two sisters, Lindy and Stacey of the home. Also surviving are his "Grammy" and "Granddaddy" Lina and Linwood Sherlock, and his Grandma, Josephine Cartwright, of Elizabeth City.

Cartwright was born Feb. 23, 1989 and lived in Kill Devil Hills all his life. He had attended Manteo High School for two years. In May, 2002, he was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. He pursued a winning struggle against the disease based on his newly found motto, "You don't get to choose your fate, you only get to choose how you respond to it." In August, 2003, he was stricken with West Nile and never recovered.

Funeral services were held at St. Andrews By the Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head on Jan. 23. A reception will be provided for those who wish to share publicly their memories of Cartwright. Burial will follow in Elizabeth City. For those who wish to contribute in lieu of flowers, the family would like for contributions to be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 404 Colley Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23507 and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

The family would especially like to thank the numerous doctors, nurses, and staff members of CHKD for their untiring efforts and loving care.

Twiford's Funeral Home in Manteo is in charge of arrangements.

Grey Griggs

Grey Smith Griggs, 78, of Southern Shores died Dec. 28 in Elizabeth City.

Born in Winnsboro, S.C., she was the daughter of the late William Rogers and Zulee Funderburke Smith and the widow of Brantley E. Griggs, Sr.

She was a retired teacher with Camden County Public Schools. She was a member of Duck United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane Hand Moseley of Southern Shores and Cynthia Grey Hand of Norfolk; a step-daughter, Elsie Griggs Pugh of Camden; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Dec. 30 in Duck United Methodist Church and officiated bt the Rev. David Clift. A private burial followed in Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery.

Twiford's Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Griggs family.

Leslie Moore Hooper

Captain Leslie Moore Hooper, 76, of Salvo, died Dec. 20 at his residence.

Goldie Stowe Burrus

Goldie Stowe Burrus, 93, of Frisco, died Jan. 2 at her residence.

Born in Hatteras, she was the daughter of the late Curtis William and Mattie Burrus Stowe and the widow of Adolphus Burrus, Jr.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church. Mrs. Burrus was also preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Burrus Ransom.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Hughes of Frisco; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Burrus Ransom.

Funeral services were held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church Jan. 4 with Rev. Charles Moseley. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Twiford's Island Chapel, Hatteras assisted the family with arrangements.

Vernon Lee Creekmore

Vernon Lee Creekmore, 83, 224 Creekmore Road, Moyock, died Dec. 7, in the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Born in Currituck County, he was the son of the late Vernon Fulford and Blanche Lee Creekmore and was the husband of Elizabeth ``Nicky" Stuart Creekmore.

He was a retired insurance agent, a member of the Pimoor United Methodist Church and a member of the Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF & AM. Mr. Creekmore loved his family and friends. He was an avid fisherman, and was a friend to all, never meeting a stranger. He loved the leisure time he spent in Dare County as well as Currituck County.

Also surviving are a daughter, Carole Dobberteen of Virgina Beach; a granddaughter, Lisa Cox and husband, Tim of Virginia Beach, VA; a great granddaughter, Amanda Lee Cox of Virginia Beach, VA; a sister, Margaret C. Pritchard and husband, Joe of Moyock; and a niece, Janet Lane of Chesapeake, VA.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 10 in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church, St., Elizabeth City by Rev. Scott Wilson-Parsons. Burial followed in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery.

Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City is in charge funeral arrangements.
