The funeral for Carey J. (Tad) Long, 61, of 3805 Bowmantown Rd., who died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Duke University Medical Center, was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Buddy Hall. Burial was in the Olive Branch Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Long was a native of Person County, the son of Christine Long of Roxboro, who survives, and the late Joe David Long. His late daughter was Melissa Mae Long.
He attended Triple Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Theresa Oakley Long; four children, Carey Todd Long of Timberlake, Traci Lynn Long and Stephen Gregory Long, both of Roxboro and Rebecca Long of Halifax, Va.; a brother, Melvin Ruffin Long; a sister, Lois L. Dunkley of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Carey Brent Long and Amber Faith Long.
Pallbearers were Charlie Oakley, Charles Albright, Joe Long, Carey B. Long, Johnny Tillman, Wendell Wilborn and Scott Campbell.

Pearl G. Murray
VIRGILINA, Va. – The funeral for Pearl Glascock Murray, 84, of 1014 Eighth St., Virgilina, Va., who died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in Halifax Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Jan. 19, in Union United Church of Christ by the Rev. Michael Wilburn. Burial will be in the Virgilina Cemetery.
Mrs. Murray was a native of Granville County, the daughter of the late William Berry and Annie Bell Glascock.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Union United Church of Christ where she served as a trustee. She was a member and past president of the Virgilina Women’s Club.
Surviving are her husband, O. Fraser Murray.; a daughter, Patricia Murray Owen of Burlington; two sons, Ocie F. Murray Jr. of Fayetteville and W. Allen Murray of South Boston, Va.; two brothers, Roy Glascock of Virgilina and Carroll Glascock of Oxford; two granddaughters, Lawanna Murray and Trina Baker; four grandsons, G. Edward Owen Jr., Michael Murray, David Murray and Jason Murray; and two great-grandchildren, Kayla Baker and Kelsey Baker.
Memorials may be to the Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department or to the Halifax County Rescue Squad.
Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Home in South Boston, Va.

Margaret Y. Trent
DURHAM – A memorial service for Margaret Yarborough Trent, 80, of 2223 Elmwood Dr., Durham, who died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham, was conducted at 11 a.m Wednesday, Jan. 16, in First Baptist Church in Durham by Dr. Andrew Davis.
Mrs. Trent was a native of Person County.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Friendship Sunday School class and the choir.
Surviving are her husband, James W. Trent; two sons, Thomas H. Trent of Durham and Dr. James W. Trent Jr. of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, W. Clayton Yarborough of Burlington; and two granddaughters, Mary S. Trent and Rachel E. Trent.
Pallbearers were members of the Friendship Sunday School Class.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 414 Cleveland St., Durham, NC 27701.

Inez B. Turner
PROSPECT HILL – The funeral for Inez Barnwell Turner, 87, of 12451 N. C. 86 South, who died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Jan. 19, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Bobby Tate. Burial will be in Cooper Cemetery.
Mrs. Turner was a native of Caswell County, the daughter of the late Robert Harvey and Omie Satterfield Barnwell. Her late husband was Arch Turner. Her late daughter was Mamie Turner Horner.
She was a member of Old Lea Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Clyde Turner of Prospect Hill; a daughter, Virginia Epps of Rougemont; two brothers, Russell Barnwell of Graham and Roger Barnwell of Prospect Hill; two sisters, Nellie Gentry of Burlington and Mary Smith of Graham; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the Cooper Cemetery Fund, c/o Edwin Yarborough, 1223 Ridgeville Rd., Prospect Hill, NC 27314.

Ardie L. Mayton Jr.
The funeral for Ardie Lee (Junior) Mayton Jr., 69, of 12 Primrose Ln., who died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2001, in his home following an extended illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. in Hudson Funeral Home chapel in Durham by the Rev. Jack Cox. Burial will be in Ellis Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Mayton was a native of Chatham County, the son of Lucille Watson Mayton of Durham, who survives, and the late Artie Lee Mayton.
He was a lifelong resident of Durham and moved to Roxboro in 1999.
He was retired, after 35 years, from Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of Roxboro where he was plant manager.
He was a Baptist.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Martha Noah Mayton; a son, Danny Mayton of Timberlake; two daughters, Pam Mayton of Oak Park, Calif. and Shelia Garrett of Durham; a brother, Sammy Mayton of Stem; a sister, Maggie Holleman of Durham; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., today, Jan. 23, at Hudson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Butch Clayton, Jimmy Walker, Richard Duncan, Tony Fogleman, Tommy Brogden and Gerald Oakley. Brantley Burnette, Tommy Burnette, Jeff Fitzgerald, Otha Day and Donald Garrett will be honorary pallbearers.

Linda S. Parker
HILLSBOROUGH – The funeral for Linda Shull Parker, 60, of 401 Dunnegan Rd., Hillsborough, who died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Jan. 23, in Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Thomas Braswell.
Mrs. Parker was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Pearley and Ruth Mundy Shull.
She was a Baptist.
Surviving are her husband, Hubert Parker; four sons, Sam Wade Jr. of Wagger, Va.; Robert M. Wade of Martinsville, Va.; Charles Wade and Hubert Parker Jr., both of Hillsborough; two daughters, Delores W. Hitta of Danville, Va. and Phyllis W. Webster of Germany; four brothers, Bob Shull, Pearley Shull Jr., Larry Shull and Howard Eastwood, all of Roxboro; two sisters, Joan S. Weaver and Sandra S. Mangum, both of Roxboro; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ivey E. Pleasant Jr.
LEASBURG – The funeral for Ivey Ellis Pleasant Jr., 75, of Leasburg, who died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in Duke University Medical Center, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Burns and the Rev. Thomas G. Holtsclaw. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Pleasant was a native of Person County, the son of the late Ivey E. and Anna Mae Harris Pleasant.
He attended Appalachian State University.
He served as a U. S. Navy medic in World War II.
He was a retired farmer.
He was a member of Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church were he taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. The Sunday school class was named in his honor.
Surviving are a sister, Nellie P. Strader of Ruffin; a niece, Sandra Pugh of Ruffin; a nephew, Edward G. Strader Jr. of Ruffin and a great nephew, Will Strader of Ruffin.

David R. Timberlake
APEX – The funeral for David R. Timberlake, 51, of 2300 Kelly Rd., Apex, who died suddenly Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, in Apex Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Gross.
Mr. Timberlake was a native of Person County, the son of Guy and Frances Timberlake of Timberlake, who survive.
He was an engineer with Carolina Power & Light Co. for more than 20 years.
He was a graduate of N.C. State University.
He was a member of the 1st N.C. Cavalry.
He was a Christian.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Barbara Jo Timberlake; a daughter, Lisette M. Timberlake of the home; three brothers, Jack Timberlake of Rock Hill, S.C.; Dr. John Timberlake of Median, Ohio and Charles Timberlake of Timberlake.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Jan. 23, at Apex Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Hope Chapel Building Fund, 111-A Phillips Medical Way, Apex, NC 27502.

Allie L. Walker
The funeral for Allie Lee Walker, 97, of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in Person Memorial Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, in Holy Temple of Jesus Christ in Timberlake by Bishop James Morton and Bishop Tee Norlar Johnson. Burial will be in Peace Memorial Garden.
Surviving are a half-sister, Dorothy Webb of Durham; two nieces, Mrs. Hagar M. Jones and Mrs. Willie M. Sapp, both of Timberlake.

Michael Woods
DURHAM – The funeral for Michael Woods, 53, of 5308 Kenmont Dr., Durham, who died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, in Durham Regional Hospital following an extended illness, was conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 21, in Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert L. Joy. Burial was in the Nelson Family Cemetery.
Mr. Woods was a native of Person County.
Surviving are a daughter, Bernadette Woods of Roxboro; a sister, Rita Woods Winstead of Durham; his step-father, Leonidas D. Nelson, of Roxboro; two step-sisters, Patricia Hunter of Albany, Ga. and Deborah Nelson of Greensboro; two step-brothers, Leonidas D. Nelson Jr. of Durham and Bobby Nelson of Roxboro; and two grandchildren.

Geraldine E. Aultman
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The funeral for Geraldine (Gerry) Exarhos Aultman, 50, formerly of Roxboro, who died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.
Ms. Aultman was a native of Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of Sophia Exarhos of Bartow, Fla., who survives.
She was a bookkeeper for Peterson and Myers, P.A.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are a son, Brian Aultman of Durham; two daughters, Angela Jenkins of Clayton and Victoria Aultman of Tallahassee, Fla.; two sisters, Marcella Cook of Haines City, Fla. and Diana Miller of Boone.

Esther N. Bailey
The funeral for Esther Newman Bailey, 83, of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 1 p.m., today, Jan. 26, in Elijah Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Alfred M. Faulkner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bailey was a native of Halifax County, Va.
She was a member of Elijah Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Queen B. Winstead of Roxboro, Connie Holder of Freeport, N.Y. and Fannie Harmon of Holbrook, N.Y.; a son, Thomas Newman of Mayo, Va.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home.

Blake L. Clayton
The funeral for Blake Love Clayton, 26, of 710 City Lake Rd., who died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, was conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, in Theresa Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial was in the Clayton Family Cemetery.
Mr. Clayton was a native of Person County, the son of Dolian and Clara Bowes Clayton of Roxboro, who survive.
He was a Baptist.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a twin brother, Brent Clayton of Roxboro; a nephew, Colton Clayton of Roxboro and a niece, Erika Clayton of Roxboro.
Pallbearers were Jason Clayton, Trent Clayton, Travis Clayton, Steve Bowles, Allan Bowles and Dennis Yarboro. Greg Bowles, Darrell Rudder, Eddie Gentry, Gary Clayton and Brian Sanford were honorary pallbearers.

James C. Clayton
The funeral for James Carlton Clayton, 80, of 116 Harris Clayton Rd., who died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Jan. 26, in Ca-Vel Baptist Church by the Rev. John Heskett. Burial will be in the Oakley Family Cemetery.
Mr. Clayton was a native of Caswell County, the son of the late James Henry and Minnie Sue Bohannon Clayton. His late son was Anthony Carl (Tony) Clayton.
He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. after more than 30 years of service.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having earned the Bronze Star.
He was a member of Ca-Vel Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ava Oakley Clayton; a son, Michael A. Clayton of Roxboro; a brother, Howard H. Clayton of Roxboro; a sister, Evelyn Mae C. Overby of Roxboro; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Clayton, Donny Clayton, Steve Clayton, Keith Clayton, Rodney Clayton, Neil Clayton, Ronald Wayne Clayton and Harry Hodges.

James E. Hicks
RALEIGH – The funeral for James E. Hicks, 87, of 3105 Constance Cir., Raleigh, and formerly of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Rex Hospital following a brief illness, was conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 25, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel in Roxboro by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial was in Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Hicks was a native of Vance County, the son of the late Otha J. and Bessie Short Hicks.
He was a retired farmer.
He was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church in Vance County.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Ellis Hicks; two daughters, Cathrine H. Watkins and Peggy H. Robinson, both of Raleigh; a step-son, J.R. Elliott of Franklinton, N.C.; a sister, Hazel H. Norwood of Oxford; three half-sisters, Betty H. Boyd of Oxford, Margaret H. Robinson of Henderson and Mary Ann H. Howell of Wilson; a step-sister, Rose Cottrell of Wilson; two half-brothers, Ben Hicks and Sonny Hicks, both of Henderson; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Clarence (C.T.) Hicks Jr., Charles G. Hicks, Bobby Norwood, Carlton L. Norwood, C.T. Norwood and Otha Norwood.

Philip A. Jones
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Philip A. Jones of Dahlonega, Ga. died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in his home following an extended illness.
Mr. Jones was a native of Person County, the son of the late George Dewey and Hettie Wrenn Jones.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having been stationed for two years in Giessen, Germany with the Combat Engineers Division.
He was retired after 34 years with the Georgia Department of Labor, last serving as director of the planning division.
He was a member of Dahlonega United Methodist Church.
He was an active member of many service and civic organizations.

Rena G. Wilkerson
HENDERSON – The funeral for Rena George Wilkerson, 88, formerly of 220 Kittrell St., Henderson, who died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in a Henderson nursing home, will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, in Flowers Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dallas George. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkerson was a native of Vance County, the daughter of the late Joseph and Zelphy Lamb George. Her late husband was Hartwell Simmons Wilkerson. Her late son was Jackie R. Wilkerson, a former Roxboro police chief.
She was retired from Harriet & Henderson Yarns Inc. after 44 years of service.
He attended North Henderson Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Ferebee W. Preddy of Franklinton; two sons, Bobby E. Wilkerson and Thomas O. (Ranger) Wilkerson, both of Henderson, 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Flowers Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ranger and Sandra Wilkerson, 835 Eastside Dr., Henderson.
Grandsons will be pallbearers.
