Lizzie S. Whitlow
The funeral for Lizzie Slaughter Whitlow, 78, of 461 Dirgie Mine Rd., who died Friday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2002, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, in Rock Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Martin Hall and the Rev. Hal Dickerson. Burial will be in Allensville United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Whitlow was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late R. Gus and Fatima Stanfield Slaughter.
A graduate of the former Allensville High School, she was retired from the former Roxboro Manufacturing Co.
She was a member of Rock Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Michael W. Whitlow of Roxboro; a brother, Horace G. Slaughter of Roxboro; two sisters, Alma S. Moore of Portsmouth, Va. and Virginia S. Bunn of Charlotte; and two grandsons, Carl Michael Whitlow and Matthew Wayne Whitlow.
Pallbearers will be Pete Slaughter, Jimmy Slaughter, Steve Slaughter, Jesse Riley, James Currin, Willie Brooks and D. D. Bunn.
Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Queen, L. D. Slaughter, Tera Slaughter, Urel Gillis, Merritt Gillis, Rufus Slaughter, R. B. Wilbourn, Anthony Martin and Howard Nelson.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Jan. 26, at Strickland Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her son, Michael Whitlow, 1389 Dirgie Mine Rd.
Memorials may be made to Rock Grove Baptist Church, 3190 Allensville Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Beverly B. Bullock
The funeral for Beverly Bryan Bullock Jr., 77, of 4404 Burlington Rd., who died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 31, in Warren’s Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Susan Harthon. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Bullock was a native of Person County, the son of the late Beverly Bryan and Nettie Lou Harris Bullock. His late wife was Sarah Willson Bullock.
He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran having earned the Good Conduct Medal 8th award, Vietnam Service Medal with FMF Combat Operation Insignia, Second Award of National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Combat Action Ribbon and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Device. He served for more than 30 years before entering the Naval Reserve.
His military service included World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Campaign. He served on three ships, the USS Higbee, the USS Salamonie and the USS Algol. Off the coast of Normandy on D-Day, he was aboard ship receiving the wounded. He retired with the rank of senior chief petty officer.
He was a member of the Retired CPO and was general quartermaster of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2058.
He was a member of Warren’s Grove United Methodist Church where he was secretary and treasurer of the Warren’s Grove UMC Men, a choir member and served on the administrative board.
Surviving are two daughters, Gwen Curtis of Ithaca, N.Y. and Martha B. Caves of Raleigh; a son, David Charles Bullock of Oakland, Calif.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Jan. 30, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be members of Warren’s Grove Methodist Men, Yogi Blalock, Neil Duncan, Robby Jones, Robert Jones, Aaron Duncan, George Scoville, Linwood Jones, Joe Long and Leon Wilson. Members of VFW Post 2058 will be honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to Warren’s Grove UMC Parsonage Fund, 1511 Wesleyan Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Leroy R. Hutchins
A graveside funeral, with military rites, for Leroy Robert Hutchins, 82, of 265 Coe St., who died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Jan. 30, in Surl Primitive Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Herbert Brown.
Mr. Hutchins was a native of Rutherford County, the son of the late Virgil Leroy and Florence Medford Hutchins.
He was a farmer and had worked at Eaton Corp.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, having served 15 years.
He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Fryer Hutchins; four sons, Lee Hutchins and Russell Hutchins, both of Roxboro, Keith Hutchins of Burlington and Sam Hutchins of Timberlake; four daughters, Carol Money of Roxboro, Barbara Potvin of Clearwater, Fla., Doris Jordan of Timberlake and Linda Melton of Roxboro; a sister, Lettie Newsome of Chase City, Va.; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Jessie H. Long
DANVILLE, Va. – A graveside funeral for Jessie Herman Long, 78, of 125 Mountain Hill Rd., Danville, Va., who died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Randy Sutter.
Mr. Long was a native of Person County, the son of the late Bryant N. and Lula May Long. His late son was Author Ray Long.
He was retired from Elroy Lynch Excavating.
He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita Edward Long; three sons, Jessie Herman Long Jr., Billy Long and Robbie Long, all of Roxboro; five daughters, Anita Ann Yarboro, Brenda L. Wade and Kathy Thaxton, all of Danville, Karen Rimmer of Roxboro and Crystal Long of Danville; three brothers, Raymond Long, Eugene Long and Arnold Long, all of Roxboro; two sisters, Lillie Mae Tingen and Martha Carver, both of Roxboro; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.

Ralph M. Martin
SCOTTSBURG, Va. – The funeral for Ralph Monroe Martin, 75, of 1112 Monroe Trail, Scottsburg, Va., who died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Halifax Regional Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Clover Church of God of Prophesy by the Rev. Courtney Coffer. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Martin was a native of Halifax County, the son of the late Riley Lee and Minnie M. Martin. His late daughter was Brenda Hughes.
He was a member of the Clover Church of God of Prophesy.
Surviving are his wife, Louise M. Martin; three sons, Monore Martin and Wayne Martin, both of Scottsburg and David Martin of South Boston, Va.; seven daughters, Dorothy Moorefield of South Boston, Lois Brann of Roxboro, Mavis Martin and Joyce Newcomb, both of Clover, Va.; Judy Newcomb of Scottsburg, Vicky Lacks of Saxe, Va. and Sheila Lacks of Scottsburg; a brother, Ollie Martin of Scottsburg; a sister, Betty Martin of South Boston; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ronald K. Chambers
DALLAS, N. C. – Funeral arrangements were incomplete Friday for Ronald Keith Chambers, 45, of 142 Applewood Rd., Dallas, who died Thursday, May 23, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Chambers was the son of Mary Long Chambers of Dallas, who survives, and the late Burley Chambers.
He was employed as a welder with Thermal Engineer Services.
Surviving in addition to his mother are a brother, Kenneth C. Chambers of Roanoke Rapids and a sister, Lisa Chambers Durham of Gastonia.
Arrangements are by Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Brenda F. Rogers
The funeral for Brenda Faye Rogers, 36, of 3301 Virgilina Rd., who died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her home following a sudden illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 26, in Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Rogers was a native of Person County.
She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, La Quetta Rogers and Shanita Rogers, both of the home; three sisters, Lessie Hughes of Virgilina, Va.; Lillian Williams of Durham and Lucinda Clay of Roxboro; three brothers, Jasper Ramsey of the home, David Ramsey of Roxboro and Donald Ramsey of Zebulon.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, May 25, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church and at other times at 3301 Virgilina, Rd.
Arrangements are by Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Home.

Joseph J. Dunn
DURHAM – The funeral for Joseph Jerome Dunn, 66, of Durham, who died unexpectedly Thursday, May 23, 2002, will be conducted at 1 p.m., today, May 29, in Hall-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel in Durham by the Rev. Forest M. Gale Jr.
Mr. Dunn was a native of Durham County, the son of the late Robert L. and Emma Aycock Dunn.
He was the owner of Dunn Construction Co. and The Westside Game Room.
Surviving are his wife, Yolanda Jannetta Dunn; three sons, Peter J. Dunn of Fayetteville, Timothy R. Dunn and George W. Dunn, both of Durham; a brother, Jack Dunn of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Dunn Jones of Durham and seven grandchildren.

George R. Johnson
The funeral for George Randolph Johnson, 61, of 711 Leasburg Rd., Lot 68, who died Monday morning, May 27, 2002, at his home, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, in Shady Hill Baptist Church by Dr. James Richmond.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita P. Johnson; six children, Vicki Johnson of Yonkers, N. Y., Penny Johnson and Erica Johnson, both of Roxboro, and George Foster Johnson, Sheila Johnson and Wendy Brunson, all of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Deborah McCracken of Baltimore; three brothers, John Winstead and Ronald Crockett, both of Baltimore and James Tobias of Philadephia, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Arrangements are by Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Service of Roxboro.

David T. Long
The memorial funeral for David Thomas Long, 75, of 314 S. Main St., who died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Person Memorial Hospital was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, in Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. DuPre Sanders. Burial was in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Long was a native of Trempealeau County, Wis., the son of the late Dr. David Thomas and Anna Newton Long.
He was retired from Consolidated Freightways in Menlo Park, Calif.
He received two degrees from the University of Minnesota
He attended Roxboro Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Arlene Lockwood Long; two sons, Allen Long of Redding, Calif. and Gary Long of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Richard Long of Menomonie, Wis. and two grandchildren, Justin Long and Jacob Long.

Ila S. Lunsford
The funeral for Ila Sue Lunsford, 92, of 2886 Charlie Long Rd., Hurdle Mills, who died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 30, in Hester Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. J.C. Clayton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Irene Wilkerson of Hurdle Mills; an adopted daughter, Lois Totten of Burlington; a brother, Jessie Lunsford of Roxboro; three grandchildren, Dorothy Outlaw of Roxboro, William Totten Jr. of Maydon and Derek Totten of Greenville and a great-granddaughter, Kim Outlaw of Baltimore, Md.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, May 29, at Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Service.

Edythe L. Mosley
CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – The funeral for Edythe Louise Mosley, 81, who died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at Mount Carmel West Palliative Care Unit, was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, May 20, int Mader-Peters Funeral Home by Pastor John Ash. Burial was in Forest Cemetery.
Mrs. Mosley was a native of Yanceyville, N.C., the daughter of the late Garner and Lula M. Pulliam Solomon.
She was a member of Pontious EUB Church were she taught youth Sunday School class for several years.
Surviving are her husband, James C. Mosley; a daughter, Elaine Thompson of Circleville; a granddaughter, Laura Pickard of Indianapolis, Ind.; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Solomon Pickard and two step-great-grandsons, Luke and Mitch Pickard, all of Indianapolis.

Alfred G. Palmer
The funeral for Alfred Gordon Palmer, 66, of 49 Alfred Palmer Ln., who died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, Va., was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown and Dr. Wallace Kirby. Burial was in the Oakley Family Cemetery.
Mr. Palmer was a native of Person County, the son of the late Charles Gordon and Ollie Sue Oakley Palmer.
He was the owner of Palmer's Plumbing and Mobile Home Park.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are three sons, Ricky Gordon Palmer and Alfred Charles Palmer, both of Roxboro, and David Robert Palmer of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Evelyn T. Wilson of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Russell Palmer, Elizabeth Palmer, William Palmer, and Cody Palmer; and his fiancée, Melvie Fuqua of Martinsville, Va.;
Pallbearers were Frank Culley, Lewis Pergerson, James K. Knott, Jack Reynolds, C.J. Sumner, Linwood Roberts, Victor Roberts and Percy Oakley.

Malcolm B. Umstead
BEAUFORT – The funeral for Malcolm Bruce Umstead, 87, of Beaufort, who died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Carteret General Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, May 29, int Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Bahama by the Rev. Ron Snyder. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Umstead was a native of Bahama. His late wife was Etta Monk Umstead.
He was retired from Norfolk & Western Railroad, after 41 years of service.
Surviving are a daughter, Kitty U. Boersma of San Diego, Calif.; a son, Michael Paige Umstead of Mt. Airy; and a grandson, Gregory Mark Umstead of Durham.

C. J. White
The funeral for C.J. White, 81, of CC White Circle, Hurdle Mills, who died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 30, in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Norma Walters, Associate Minister Matt Evans and Associate Minister Hyung Kim. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A part owner of Brooks & White Funeral Home of Roxboro, Mr. White was a native of Orange County, the son of the late Cyrus Clifton and Vivian Oakley White. His late wife was Vera Moore White.
He was graduated from the Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn. in 1947.
He served as embalmer and funeral director at Brooks & White Funeral Homes in South Boston, Va., Hurdle Mills, Semora and Yanceyville. He became a part owner of Brooks & White Funeral Home of Roxboro in 1950 and maintained that connection until his death.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a former Sunday school superintendent at Hurdle Mills Methodist Church and later became a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
He was a charter member of the Roxboro Lions Club and was also a member of the Shrine Club and the Masonic Lodge.
He was an avid photographer, gardener, woodworker and outdoorsman.
Surviving are two sons James H. (Jimmy) White and Cecil C. White, both of Hurdle Mills; three daughters, Rose W. Wrenn of Raleigh, and Ellen W. Rogers and Jennifer White, both of Hurdle Mills; two brothers, D. Lawrence White of Roxboro and Kermit F. White of Danville, Va.; nine grandchildren, Bridgette Smith, Greg White, Adam White, Jared Compton, Barrett Rogers, Stephen White, Jordan Compton, Cameron Wrenn and Lindsey Rogers; and two great-grandchildren, Tammra and Joseph Smith.
Grandsons will be pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Jasper C. Ellis
ROUGEMONT – The funeral for Jasper Cheek Ellis Jr., 84, of 655 Bethany Church Rd., Rougemont, who died Friday, May 31, 2002, at his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 2, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Billy Lunch. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Ellis was a native of Person County, the son of the late Tiny Virginia Clayton and Jasper Cheek Ellis. His late wife was Irene Dean Ellis.
He was a retired tobacco farmer.
He was a Baptist.
Surviving are two daughters, Sylvia E. Stephens of Rougemont and Helen E. Parrott of Roxboro; a brother, James Weldon Ellis of Durham; four grandchildren, Debbie Stephens, Greg Parrott, Kent Parrott and Kevin Stephens; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Oakley, Tommy Oakley, Danny Oakley, Ray Dean, Ted Oakley and Kirk Oakley.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, June 1, at Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Sylvia E. and C. J. Stephens, 564 Bethany Church Rd., Rougemont.
