The funeral for Eglantene (Tene) Yarboro Long, 68, of 170 Talley Loop Rd., who died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in her home following a brief illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 20, in Rock Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Martin Hall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Long was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Russ and Lessie Watson Yarboro.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Rock Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, J. Ronald Long; a daughter and family, Bridget L. Tuck, husband Kelly and step-son Dustin; three sons and families, Tracey Long, wife Susan and sons, Matt and Justin; Kevin (Boo Boo) Long, wife Nancy, daughter, Leslie and step-son, Billy Moody; and Jody Long and Steven Wilson, all of Roxboro; six sisters, Ruby Y. Martin of Hillsborough, Mary Frances Y. Clayton and Hilda Y. Seamster, both of Roxboro; Shelby Y. Dixon of Hurdle Mills; Clarious Y. Blalock and Kay Y. Blackard, both of Timberlake; and a brother, S. Edward Yarboro of Roxboro.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Blackard, Scott Blackard, Troy Clayton, Brent Dixon, Michael Dixon, Greg Seamster, Michael Talley, and Sammy Yarboro.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, July 19, in Rock Grove Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Rock Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 3190 Allensville Rd., Roxboro, NC 27574 or Home, Health & Hospice of Person Co., 125 S. Morgan St., Roxboro, NC 27573.
Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home.

James R. Scanlan
The memorial funeral for James Richard Scanlan, 60, of 141 Somerset Dr., who died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in his home, will be conducted at 4 p.m., Sunday, July 20, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Mike Frese.
Mr. Scanlan was a native of Essex County, Mass., the son of the late James Joseph and Dorothy L. Austin Scanlan.
He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Management and later his Master’s Degree in Mathematics from Lowell Technological Institute in Massachusetts.
He was a United State Army veteran serving from 1961 to 1965.
He was a math instructor at Lowell Technological Institute from 1970 to 1971, Shaw University in Raleigh from 1972 to 1979, Piedmont Community College from 1979 to 1986, and Durham Technical Community College in Durham from 1989 to the present.
Surviving are a brother, William Henry Scanlan, of Williamstown, Mass.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, July 19, at Brooks & White Funeral Home and one hour prior to the memorial service on Sunday, July 20, and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the James R. Scanlan Memorial Scholarship Fund at Durham Tech. Checks should be made payable to Durham Technical Community College Foundation, in memory of James R. Scanlan, and mailed to the Foundation at 1637 Lawson St., Durham, NC 27703.

Anne V. Shotwell
The funeral for Anne Vickers Shotwell, of 5575 Boston Rd., who died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 20, in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church by Father Harmon Smith. Burial will be in Burchwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Shotwell was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Dr. Grover Cleveland Vickers and Betty Eberman Vickers Walker and step-daughter of the late George W. Walker Jr. Her late husband was James Fleetwood Shotwell.
She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
She was previously employed by the Person County Social Services and Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service in the field of nutrition as well as John Umpstead Hospital as a caregiver. She retired from the Durham County Community Living Program as a group home manager.
She formerly coached midget girls’ and the Bethel Hill High School Girls Basketball team.
Surviving are three sons, James Fleetwood and wife Linda Shotwell, Jr. of Murfreesboro, Larry Nichols and wife Edna Shotwell of West End, and Donald Hubert and wife Janis Shotwell of Roxboro; two daughters, Marcia S. and husband Jim Slaughter of Durham and Susan S. Buchanan, of Burlington; a brother, Bill Vickers, of Banning, Calif.; a sister, Polly Young, of Tybee Island, Geo.; 10 grandchildren and spouses, Elizabeth and Todd Sanders, Beverly and Pat Rogers, Nick Shotwell, Matthew Shotwell, Natalie and Al Ray, Angie Shotwell, Justin Shotwell, Tracey Slaughter, Whitney Slaughter, and James Buchanan; and four great grandchildren, Emily Sanders, Caroline Sanders, Gentry Rogers, and Logan Shotwell.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, July 19, in Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1071, Roxboro, NC 27573 or the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215.

Ray B. Clayton
The funeral for Ray Burns Clayton, 64, of 128 Yarboro Rd., who died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, July 5, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial will be in Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Mr. Clayton was a native of Orange County, the son of the late Graham and Lucy Jacobs Clayton. His late wife was Rosa Davis Clayton.
He was employed with Alvin Jordan Contractors.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Ann Clayton of Roxboro, and a sister, Kathleen C. Smith of High Point.
Pallbearers will be James Sheets, Terry Bray, Travis Fitts, Rickey Roberson, Michael Newcombe, and William Wesley.

Edward Bates
The funeral for Edward Bates, 88, formerly of 143 Olive Hill Church Rd., Leasburg, who died Friday, July 4, 2003, in Brian Center, Yanceyville, will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, July 14, in Zion Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Glenn.
Mr. Bates was a native of Durham County.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Essie (Pickle) Bates; a brother, Grant Bates of Burlington; a godson, Tony McIver of Leasburg; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, July 13, in Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Don R. Catlett
PROSPECT HILL - The funeral for Don Roy Catlett, 70, of 947 Ridgeville Rd., Prospect Hill, who died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Jeff Tallent. Burial was in the Cooper Cemetery.
Mr. Catlett was a native of Davidson County, the son of the late James Roy and Grace Suggs Catlett.
He was a retired mechanic.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Naomi Talley Catlett; three sons, Gary D. Catlett of Spartanburg, S. C., James P. Catlett and wife, Sharon, and Donald R. Catlett and wife, Robyn, both of Prospect Hill; two brothers, Thomas J. Catlett of Florida and Wayne Catlett of Mebane; four sisters, Mary C. Burgess, Betty C. Tranchetti and Mattie C. Pierce, all of Mebane, and Jean C. Long of Burlington; and two grandchildren, Shannon R. Catlett and Donald D. Catlett.
Pallbearers were Hoyle Vickery, Jimmy Wikinson, Donnie Carver, Bud Rudd, A. c. Long and Donald D. Catlett. Honorary pallbearers were Ben Blalock, Buddy Porterfield, Edwin Earl Yarbrough and Buddy Solomon.
Memorials may be made to the Cooper Cemetery, c/o Edwin Yarbrough, 1223 Ridgeville Rd., Prospect Hill, NC 27314.

Ernest Hunley
The funeral for Ernest Hunley, 78, of 1578 Red Oak Dr., who died Tuesday morning, July 22, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham following an extended illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, in Strickland Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Martin Hall. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Hunley was a native of Orange County, the son of the late Dalton and Mary Smith Hunley.
He was retired from Loxcreen Corp.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Berry's Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Wilborn Hunley; a son, Ronnie Hunley of Roxboro; a daughter, Debbie H. Ladd Gordon of Timberlake; two brothers, Clyde Hunley of Mebane and Merritt Hunley of Cluster Springs, Va.; two sisters, Blanche H. Faulkner of Mebane and Maude H. Wright of Carrboro; five grandchildren, Barrett Chandler Hunley and Andy Earl Snow, both of Roxboro, John Dennis Tuck of Bahama, Christopher Scott Ladd and Brian Wayne Ladd, both of Danville, Va. and Brock Thomas Ladd of Hillsborough; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Andy Snow, Dennis Tuck, Lin Roberts, Ronnie Foushee, Gary Hunley, Charles Reaves and Zeb Barnette. Honorary pallbearers will be Dallas Snow and Woofie Robertson.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, July 23, at Strickland Funeral Home and other times at the home of Ronnie Hunley, 2457 Halifax Rd.

William J. Leibert
NEW BERN - A memorial service for William J. Leibert, 58, of New Bern, who died suddenly Sunday, July 20, 2003, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, in First Presbyterian Church in New Bern. The service will be followed by inurnment in the Memorial Garden and a reception in the church fellowship hall.
A Wake Forest University graduate, Mr. Leibert was a senior professional health care consultant, master level, with Pfizer Labs.
He was a U. S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Oakley Leibert, formerly of Person County; a son, Kirk Leibert and wife, Tara, of Cary; a brother, Bob Leibert of Morehead City; and three grandsons, Curran, Trevor and Brendan Leibert, all of Cary.
Memorials may be made to The Frankie Lemmon School, 1800 Glenwood Avenue. Raleigh, NC 27608; Habitat for Humaity, 1249 Pollock St., New Bern, NC 28560 or to First Presbyterian Church, 418 New Street, New Bern, NC 28560.

Thelma O. Lowery
The funeral for Thelma Oakley Lowery, 84, of Roxboro, who died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 23, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Kenny Dubnick. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Lowery was a Person County native, the daughter of the late Luther and Mary Gillian Oakley.
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. after 40 years of service.
She was a member of Somerset Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, Freddie and Wiliah Satterfield of Hillsborough and Eddie and Alice Satterfield of Wake Forest; three brothers, Ike Oakley, Bernice Oakley and James Oakley, all of Roxboro; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Scott Satterfield, Trent Satterfield, Eddy Satterfield II, Leroy Dunn, Bernie Oakley and Lanny Taylor.
Visitation will be held from 10 a. m. to 11 a.m. today at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Ethelene L. Harris
A graveside funeral for Ethelene Lunsford Harris, 83, of the Carver Living Center, Durham, who died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 26, in Burchwood Cemetery by Norman Stallings.
Mrs. Harris was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Joseph Nathan and Julia Allen Rogers Lunsford. Her late husband was Paul Harding Harris.
She was retired from Amphenol.
She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and attended Braggtown Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Paul Harding Harris Jr. of Durham and Timothy Brett Harris of Timberlake; a sister, Wilma Hicks of Roxboro; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Magnolia L. Hicks
The funeral for Magnolia L. Hicks, 81, of Washington, D. C., who died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in Washington, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in Mill Hill Baptist Church in Roxboro by the Rev. Frederick K. Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Hicks was a native of Person County.
Surviving are two daughters, Maggie Jones of Bladenburg, Md. and Rebecca Artis of Summersville, S. C.; and two sons, Larry Hicks of Conyers, Ga. and Michael Hicks of Forestville, Md.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 26, at Hester-Whitted-Daye Funeral Home. The family will be at the home of Helen Hicks, 419 Jones Lester Rd.

Mary L. McCracken
Mary Long McCracken, 80, of Richmond, Va., died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at her home.
A private memorial service will be conducted later.
Mrs. McCracken was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Corbitt and Maude Robertson Long. Her late husband was Mac McCracken.
She and her husband operated a rental shop in Jacksonville, Fla. before their retirement.
Surviving are a son, Bob McCracken of Callahan, Fla.; a sister, Odell Clayton of Roxboro; and a grandchild, Charles McCracken.

Evelyne R. McCullough
The funeral for Evelyne Robinson McCullough, 81, of 9800 N.C. 157W, who died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Roxboro Nursing Center will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in Berry's Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Craig Willingham. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. McCullough was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Greene Robinson. Mrs. McCullough was a homemaker and had attended Berry's Grove Baptist Church prior to her illness.
Surviving are her husband, Robert McCullough; three sons, Bobby McCullough and Mark McCullough, both of Timberlake, and Dennis McCullough, of the home; a brother, Joseph Robinson of Durham; a sister, Jane R. Weaver of Roxboro; and three grandchildren, Terrin Ashley and Heather McCullough.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Wilkinson, Barry Parker, Sam Brame, Steve Copeland, Bob Hayes and Rocky Wilkerson.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, July 26, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Erwin D. Richmond
The funeral for Erwin Dawayne (Lucky) Richmond, 27, of 41 Peace Rd., who died Tuesday morning, July 22, 2003, in Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in Cleggs Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Louis Cash.
Mr. Richmond was a native of Person County.
He was a member of Faith Harvest Ministries in Burlington.
Surviving are his parents, Frank Lewis Richmond and Ruth Day Richmond of the home; two sisters, Tressa Richmond of Greensboro and Cortrina Richmond of Burlington; and a brother, Frank Lewis Richmond Jr. of Roxboro.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, July 26, at Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Penelope Santos
Penelope (Penny) Santos of 299 Hunters Edge Dr., Timberlake died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in her home.
She was a native of Daisytown, Pa.
Surviving are her husband, Carlos Santos; a daughter, Lori Gellis Zegarewich; two sons, David Santos and Shane Santos; and four grandchildren, Nick Zegarewich, Megan Zegarewich, Nate Santos and Tori Santos. Her late daughter was Sherri Elaine Gillis.

Erma B. Tillman
The funeral for Erma Bradsher Tillman, 91, of Roxboro, who died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 5 p.m. today, July 26, in Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. DuPre Sanders. Burial will be in Burchwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Tillman was the daughter of the late Bessie Long and John Tinsley Bradsher. Her late husband was Johnny Weldon Tillman. Her late siblings were Helen Bradsher Laws, Alma Bradsher Yarboro and James Oliver Bradsher.
She was an active member of Roxboro Baptist Church and choir for many years. She was organist for the Roxboro Order of the Eastern Star of which she was a member for 60 years.
She catered and made birthday and wedding cakes for many occasions.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen von Hagel of Raleigh; two brothers, John Tinsley Bradsher Jr., and Edward Long Bradsher, both of Roxboro; a sister, Betty Ann Bradsher Tillett of Burlington; a granddaughter, Kristin Lea Knott and husband, James Michael Knott of Raleigh; and great-grandchildren, Michael Lee Knott and Christopher James Knott, both of Raleigh;
Pallbearers will be David Bradsher, Marcus Bradsher, Tim Bradsher, Brad Bradsher, Troy Bradsher, David Bradsher Jr., Matt Bradsher, Brad Laws, and Walter Montgomery.
Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Roxboro Baptist Church
