DURHAM — The funeral for W. Arthur Dezern, 97, of 127 E. End Ave., Durham, who died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Duke University Medical Home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, in Clements Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Pebbles Lindsay Lucas. Burial will be in the Poole Family Cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Bobby Ray Dezern and wife, Ann, of Roxboro; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., today, Jan. 31, at the funeral home.

Melvin G. Gusler
MILTON — The funeral for Melvin Grady Gusler, 78, of 11819 Academy St., Milton, who died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Danville Regional Medical Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Jan. 31, in Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Clyde Everett and the Rev. Bruce Wheeler. Burial, with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post 1097, will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Mr. Gusler was a native of Rocky Mount, Va., the son of the late James Robert and Mattie Sigmon Gusler.
He was a supervisor in the Knit Finishing Dept. at Dan River Inc.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Milton Baptist Church and was a former member of the Milton Volunteer Fire Dept.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Frances Booth Gusler; a son, James Rudy Gusler of Pelham; a daughter, Gloria Dean Gusler Hodges of Ruffin; two brothers, Luther Gusler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Hubert Gusler of Chelsea, Mass.; two sisters, Doris Gauldin of Danville, Va. and Marie Williamson of Alton, Va.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Marie G. Hodges
RUFFIN — A graveside funeral for Marie Gibbs Hodges, 64, of 2244 Ashland Rd., who died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Sartin.
Mrs. Hodges was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., the daughter of the late Robert A. and Jennie Collins Gibbs. Her husband was the late Kirby Hodges.
She was a Baptist.
Surviving are two daughters, Wanda H. Cobb of Ruffin, and Brandi Hodges of the home; five sisters, Geraldine Anderson of Elon, Gladys Carter and Virginia Shelton, both of Danville, Va., Carolyn Gibbs of Lynchburg, Va. and Irma Pruitt of Roxboro; three brothers, Jessie Gibbs of Sophia, Wayne Gibbs of Winston-Salem and Robert Gibbs of South Brunswick; and a grandchild.

Nicholas W. Jacovitch
The funeral for Nicholas (Nick) Wayne Jacovitch, 23, of 1611 Cedar Grove Church Rd., who died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center from cystic fibrosis complications, was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Martin Hall. Burial was in Rock Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Jacovitch was a native of Person County, the son of Jimmy and Peggy Davis of Roxboro, who survive.
He was a member of Rock Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Chasity Overby Jacovitch; a son, Dylon Wayne Jacovitch of Selma; a sister, Nichole Jacovitch of Selma; his grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Edward Johnson of Saltville, Va.; Christine Davis of Roxboro, Margaret Harris of West Virginia, Ida Edwards of Kenly and Helen Jacovitch of Nippe, Ky.; three brothers, Thomas Jacovitch, Jim Davis and Ernie Davis, all of Roxboro.
Pallbearers were Kent West, Troy Patterson, Bob Rice, Heath Gill, Chris Wade and J.B. Howell.
Memorials may be made to the Dylon Wayne Jacovitch Trust Fund at the Fidelity Bank, P.O. Box 208, Roxboro, NC 27573.

William A. Street Jr.
The funeral for William Allen Street Jr., 63, formerly of Person County, who died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in Jersey City, N.J., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, int Elijah Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Alfred M. Faulkner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Street was a graduate of Person County High School.
Surviving are two brothers, Henry W. Street of Jersey City and George D. Street of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and two sisters, Tonie D. Street and Nancy C. Street, both of Jersey City.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are by Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Doris S. Ward
HAMPSTEAD — A graveside funeral for Doris Yarborough Satterfield Ward, 88, of Hampstead, who died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Woodbury Wellness Center, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Burchwood Cemetery in Roxboro by the Rev. Andrew K. Dunkerton and Reid Satterfield.
Mrs. Ward was a native of Halifax County, Va., the daughter of the late John David and Lunca Garris Yarborough. Her late husbands were F. Reid Satterfield and Leon J. Ward.
She was retired from Timme Corp. in Wilmington where she worked as a weaving instructor.
She was a member of Topsail Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a son, Tony Satterfield and wife, Diane, of Hampstead; a brother, Warren Yarborough of Sharpsburg; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 1, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel in Wilmington.
Memorials may be made to Topsail Presbyterian Church, 16249 US Hwy. 17, Hampstead, NC 28443 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.

Clarence G. Hurdle
The funeral for Clarence Garvey (Butterball) Hurdle, 77, of 715 Robert Whitfield Rd., Hurdle Mills, who died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 4, in Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. William (Bud) Budzinski and the Rev. Hal Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hurdle was a native of Person County, the son of the late Ben Garvey and Lillie Hicks Hurdle.
He was retired from E&T Equipment Co. after 36 years of service.
He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Methodist Men.
Surviving are his wife, Christine G. Hurdle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda H. and Ike Gray, Sylvia H. and Jim Fuller, all of Hurdle Mills; a sister, Lottie H. Daniels of Mebane; and four grandchildren, Jamie Gray of Hurdle Mills, Jody Gray of Manteo and Leslie and April Fuller of Hurdle Mills.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Gray, Jody Gray, John Winstead, Steven Daniels, Keith Hurdle, Richard Davis, David Poindexter and Robert Kerr. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Methodist Men.
Memorials may be made to Salem UMC, 933 Salem Church Rd., Hurdle Mills, NC 27541; to Home Health & Hospice of Person County, 325 S. Morgan St., Roxboro, NC 27573 or to Hurdle Mills Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 160, Hurdle Mills, NC 27541.

Irma T. Puryear
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — The funeral for Irma Thames Puryear, 80, of 111 White Oak Dr., South Boston, Va., who died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 4, in Brooks Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Phil Showers. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Puryear was a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., the daughter of the late John Robert and Sarah Elizabeth O’Geary Thames. Her husband was the late Page Grant Puryear.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Paigie Puryear Allnutt and husband, Robert (Bob), of Halifax, Va.; Judith Puryear Wynne of Richmond, Va., and Lydia P. Thompson of South Boston; a sister, Rachel Thames Hunziker of High Point; two brothers, Billy Thames and Garland Thames, both of Clarksville, Va.; a grandson, Robert Harold Allnutt of Roanoke, Va.; four granddaughters, Stacey Allnutt Goin of Prospect, Va.; Kelley Michelle Wynne and Brittiany Lynne Wynne, both of Richmond, and Shannon Bowery Mangum of Roxboro; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Headquarters, 3300 E. Sunrise Dr., Tucson, AZ 85718.

Alma B. Wall
NELSON, Va. — The funeral for Alma Bailey Wall, 82, who died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at her home, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 4, in Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home chapel in Clarksville, Va. Burial will be in Hebron Christian Church cemetery.
Mrs. Wall was a native of Granville County. Her husband was the late George Wilson Wall.
She was a 1937 graduate of Oakhill School.
She was a member of Averett Baptist Church.
She worked in food service for many years with Slagle’s Barbecue and Thompson’s Drug Store where she operated the diner.
Surviving are three daughters, Louise Wall Shotwell of Roxboro, Dorothy Wall Peoples of Clemmons and Betty Wall Jones of Nelson, Va.; three brothers, Edward Bailey and George Bailey, both of Stovall and Bill Bailey of Admore, Okla.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Hazel C. Breeze
The funeral for Hazel Carver Breeze, 83, of 376 Younger Rd., who died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, in Strickland Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Lewis Wall. Burial was in Burchwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Breeze was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Ada Long and Fletcher H. Carver. Her husband was the late Brady B. Breeze.
She attended Mars Hill College, was graduated from Meredith College and obtained a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
She was a teacher and library director with the Person County School System for 40 years.
She was a former member of the Person County Board of Education, the Business & Professional Women’s Club and the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.
She was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley C Fitzgerald of Roxboro and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were John I. Morton, Harold Ray Long, Jimmy Long, Ben Owen, Dale Rimmer, DeVoy Hopkins, Bob Stockard, Leroy Hutchins, Jimmy Dallas and Jerry Cates.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 400 Oberlin Rd., Suite 220, Raleigh, NC 27605 or to a charity of choice.

Bobby E. Carver
GREENSBORO — The funeral for Bobby (Bob) Exie Carver, 80, who died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at his home, will be conducted at 11 a.m., today, Feb. 7, in Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Greensboro. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington on U. S. 70 West.
Mr. Carver was a native of Person County. His first wife was the late Mildred Murphy Carver.
Reared in Person and Caswell counties, he was graduated from Prospect Hill High School. After attending Elon College for a year, he joined the U. S. Army and served as a navigator in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
In 1951, he moved to Raleigh and then to Greensboro in 1971, when he went to work for the Employment Security Commission, where he served until he retired.
Surviving are his second wife Margaret McCrary Carver; four children, Kathy Steinsberger of Raleigh, Douglas R. Carver of Leesburg, Va.; Philip M. Carver of Illinois, and Wayne Carver of Taipei, Taiwan; a sister Frances Jones of Hopewell, Va.; four half sisters, Nancy Elliott, Josephine Stephenson, Dorothy Woodward and Barbara Jean Wall; and eight grandchildren, Jeff Carver, Chris Carver, Scott Steinsberger, Rachel Steinsberger, Tzu Carver, Susanna Carver, John Garwood and Will Garwood.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 7, at the church.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Reginald DeBerry Jr.
The funeral for Reginald (Reggie) DeBerry Jr., 23, of DeBerry’s Ridge, 8917 Pauline Ct., Rougemont, who died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, in Durham, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 7, in First Baptist Church in Roxboro by the Rev. William B. Foust. Burial will be Sunday, Feb. 8, in Sandy Ridge Baptist Church cemetery in Morven in Anson County.
Mr. DeBerry was a native of Orange County, the son of Carolyn Brooks-DeBerry and Reginald DeBerry, both of Rougemont, who survive.
He attended Person and Orange County schools.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a brother, DeLeon R. DeBerry of Rougemont; his paternal grandmother, Pauline Lewis of Durham; and his maternal grandparents, Jessie and Ruby Street of Roxboro.
Arrangements are by Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home.

Mary E. Johnson
The funeral for Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 88, of 316 Jessie Hicks Rd., who died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at her home following a brief illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, in St. James Baptist Church by the Rev. Frederick Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of Person County.
She was a member of Mill Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Louis McKinley Johnson; four daughters, Margie Love, Joyce Winstead and Phyllis Dillahay, all of Roxboro, and Sylvia Daye of Baltimore, Md.; three sons, Robert Johnson, Willie Johnson and Roland Johnson, all of Roxboro; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., today, Feb. 7, at Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Thomas E. Wilborn
The funeral for Thomas Edward Wilborn, 65, of 124 Yachtsman Dr., Warrenton, who died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at his home, will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel in Roxboro. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery.
Mr. Wilborn was a native of Halifax County, Va., the son of the late Thomas and Alma Davis Wilborn.
He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Hester Wilborn; a son, Jason Wilborn and wife, Tara, of South Boston, Va.; a daughter, Carol Frances Wilborn of Westminster, S.C.; two sisters, Flora Gentry and Hazel W. Bordeau, both of Roxboro; and a grandchild, Joshua Edward Wilborn.
Visitation will be at the funeral home one hour before the service.
