SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — The funeral for Leslie Jeanett Hupp Thomas Bebber, 99, who died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at her home, was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 9, in Powell Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Garland Day.
Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Bebber was the daughter of the late Daniel Layafette Hupp and Charley Beatrice Allen Hupp.
Her husbands were the late William Ephraim Thomas and the late Howie Jones Bebber.
Her late sons were William J. Thomas, Cecil B. Thomas, and Robert L. Thomas.
Her late step-son was Howard Bebber, her late step-daughter was Virginia Baynes, and her late grandson was Blenton Conner.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of South Boston.
Surviving are two daughters, Geneva T. Snow and husband, Frank, of South Boston, and Dorothy T. Tuck and husband, Walter, of Roxboro; two sons, Cary D. Thomas and wife, Doris, of South Boston, and Carl Vance Bebber and wife, Nancy, of Montpelier; a step-son, Jake C. Bebber of South Boston; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Seventh Day Adventist Church of South Boston or to Halifax Regional Hospice.

Joyce W. Lacks
The funeral for Joyce Woodall Lacks, 65, of 190 Dixon Ln., who died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, in Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ed New.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Lacks was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Percy Jerome Woodall and Vena Blalock Woodall.
Her husband was the late Floyd O. Lacks.
She was retired from the Carver Agency Inc. Insurance & Real Estate.
She was a member of Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she was active in the choir.
Surviving are a son, David Henderson of Roxboro; a daughter, Cerise H. Jones of Ayden; two step-children, Angie L. Barbee of Mebane and Brad Lacks of Graham; a brother, Percy Jerome Woodall Jr. of Atlanta, Ga..; three sisters, Peggy W. Fogleman, Betty Jo W. Holt and Joan W. Decker, all of Roxboro; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mark Holt, Scott Henderson, Terry Henderson, Nathan Barbee, Wayne Latta, and Bob Norris.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, Feb. 11, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Person County Unit, P.O. Box 165, Roxboro, NC 27573.

Clara Majors
The funeral for Clara Majors, 81, who died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Durham Regional Hospital following an extended illness, will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, in Mill Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Frederick Wilson.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. Majors was a native of Person County.
She was a member of Mill Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Majors of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sons, Therman Newman of Durham, and Willie Majors of Woodbridge, Va.; three sisters, Josephine Thomas of Baltimore, Md. and Minnie Mae Lunsford and Veola Canada, both of Roxboro; and two brothers, Robert Canada of Baltimore and Roderick Canada of Roxboro.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., today, Feb. 11, at Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Theodore and Minnie Mae Lunsford, 218 Peck Perry Rd., Roxboro.

John M. Scott
MILTON — The funeral for John Martin Scott, 88, of Milton, who died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a brief illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in Connally United Methodist Church.
Mr. Scott was the son of the late George W. and Lena Lea Scott.
His brother was the late George L. Scott.
He was a farmer.
A veteran of World War II, he was a lifetime member of Connally United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Bradsher Scott; two sons, John Martin Scott Jr. of Danville, Va. and Bradsher T. Scott of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Emily S. Irving of Larchmont, N. Y. and Carolee S. Keener of Charlotte; three sisters, Caroline S. Foote of Milton, Cornelia S. Strickland of Raleigh and Catherine S. Gentry of Roxboro; and nine grandchildren, Catherine Scott, Louisa Irving, Caroline Irving, John B. Keener, Missy Scott, Lauren Hughett, Thomas Hughett, Thomas Sadler and Mary Wilson Sadler.
Visitation will be today and Thursday at the home, 1780 N. C. 57 North, Milton.
Memorials may be made to Connally United Methodist Church, c/o Mary Agnes Barker, 367 Norman Barker Rd., Milton, NC 27305.
Arrangements are by Townes Funeral Home of Danville, Va.

Earl V. Thorpe
The funeral for Earl V. (Buck Wheat) Thorpe, 61, of 515 Madison Blvd., who died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at UNC Hospitals, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, in Hester, Whitted & Day Funeral Home chapel.
Burial will be in Peace Memorial Garden.
Surviving are four sisters, Olivia J. Thorpe of Silver Spring, Md., Rosalind T. Blackwell, Diane L. Thorpe and Violet S. Thorpe, all of Roxboro; three brothers, Nathaniel Thorpe III of Detroit, Mich., Albert W. Thorpe of New Rochelle, N, Y. and Leroy Marable of Roxboro.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Feb. 11, at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Rosalind T. Blackwell, 384 Crystal Spring Rd., Timberlake.

Lessie S. Wrenn
The funeral for Lessie Stephens Wrenn, 93, of Cambridge Hills Assisted Living Center, who died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, following a brief illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 11, in Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Robertson.
Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Wrenn was a native of Wake County, the daughter of the late William Edgar and Martha Pollard Stephens.
Her husbands were the late Ralph Truelove and the late J. Bernice Wrenn.
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Inc.
She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Clarice S. Pendergraph of Roxboro; seven nieces; and four nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Buchanan, Kenneth Campbell, Stephen Crumpton, Chuck Ford, Aaron Stephens, and Ed Thomas.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mildred L. Braithwaite
The funeral for Mildred Long Braithwaite, 62, of 8930 Virgilina Rd., who died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at her home following an extended illness, will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19, in Strickland Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Paul McBroom.
Mrs. Braithwaite was a native of Person County, the daughter of Hazel L. Long of Roxboro, who survives, and the late Mack A. Long.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Christian Faith Fellowship.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, Ronnie Braithwaite of Roxboro; a daughter, Debbie Wilkins of Roxboro; a son, Larry Marion of Hurdle Mills; a sister, Nannie A. Jackson of Baltimore, Md.; four granddaughters, Angelique Chapman of Chesapeake, Va.; Casey Brumfield of Jacksonville, Courtney Wilkins of Roxboro and Candice Tate of Hurdle Mills; and a great-great-grandson, Anderson Brumfield Jr. of Jacksonville.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., today, Feb. 18, at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

Elsie B. Ford
The funeral for Elsie Bass Ford, 92, of 447 Cousin Rd., Rougemont, who died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Person Memorial Hospital following an extended illness, was conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 17, in Siloam Baptist Church by the Rev. Vaughan Brayboy Jr.
Burial was in the Bass Family Cemetery.
Ms. Ford was a native of Person County.
She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean Stanfield of the home; and a son-in-law, Henderson Stanfield Jr. of Roxboro.
Arrangements were by Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Frances L. Gentry
BURLINGTON — The funeral for Frances Langford Gentry, 76, of Burlington, who died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 16, in Rich and Thompson Funeral Home chapel.
Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Gentry began her elementary teaching career in Stokesdale in 1955.
She retired in 1986 from the Burlington School System.
Surviving are her husband, Lamberth George Gentry; two children, Andrew and Sandra, three sisters, Carolyn Chambers of Rougemont, Ethel Blalock of Timberlake, and Mary Hunley of South Boston, Va.; four brothers, Johnny Mack Langford and Tex Wayne Langford, both of Roxboro; Tim Langford of Virgilina, Va.; and George Langford of Lake Worth, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Miranda.
Memorials may be made to Kinnett Memorial Baptist Church, 1106 E. Morehead St., Burlington 27215 or a charity of choice.

Evelyn C. Overby
The funeral for Evelyn Mae Clayton Overby, 86, formerly of 1243 N. Main St., who died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at Roxboro Nursing Center, was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 16, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown.
Burial was in Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Overby was a native of Caswell County, the daughter of the late James Henry and Minnie Sue Bohanan Clayton.
Her husband was the late Ellis Overby.
She was first employed with Longhurst Cotton Mill and then later with Dan River Mills.
Surviving are a brother, Howard Clayton of Roxboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Steve Clayton, Keith Clayton, Randy Clayton, Neil Clayton, Mike Clayton, Jason Clayton, and Ronald Wayne Clayton.

Charles L. Winstead
The funeral for Charles L. Winstead of 1564 Semora Rd., who died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Person Memorial Hospital following a brief illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 19, in New Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Dorwin Howard.
Burial will be in the Winstead Family Cemetery.
Mr. Winstead was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was a member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Surviving are his wife, Eva Jefferies Winstead; a daughter, Sonja W. Beckford of Durham; two sons, Greg Winstead of Oxford, and Ronald L. Winstead of Roxboro; four sisters, Arlene Winstead, Gladys W. Thorp, Lowillis Winstead Johnson, all of East Orange, N.J., and Emily Eily of Roxboro; two brothers, Herbert Winstead of Roxboro and Donald Winstead of East Orange; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Feb. 18, at the church and at other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Booker Funeral Home.

Coquella C. Wrenn
The funeral for Coquella Clayton Wrenn, 85, formerly of 335 Chub Lake Loop Rd., who died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Feb. 7, in Theresa Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Wrenn was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Sim and Lillie Long Clayton.
Her husband was the late Andrews Early Wrenn.
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp.
She was a member of Theresa Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Marshall (Joe I) Wrenn of Roxboro; a daughter, Elnora W. Oakley of Roxboro; two brothers, Bradley Hubbard and Champ Hubbard, both of Roxboro; two sisters, Irene Clayton and Nannie Lou Oakley, both of Roxboro; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a step-great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Alton Reaves, Nick Fox, Calvin Clayton, Donnie Hubbard, Cary Solomon and Charles (Bud) Clayton.
Memorials may be made to Theresa Baptist Church, 3919 Chub Lake Rd., Roxboro, NC 27574.
