George R. Carver

A graveside funeral for George Robert Carver, 71, of 310 Woodlawn Ave., who died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in Person Memorial Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, in Providence Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas Braswell and the Rev. Ross Thompson.
Mr. Carver was a native of Person County, the son of the late Authur and Eula Fitts Carver.
He was retired from Person County Schools.
Surviving are his wife, Flintora Munday Carver; a daughter, Beverly Carver of the home; a son, George Carver Jr. of Roxboro; a brother, Oakey Carver of Alton, Va.; two sisters, Geneva Long and Marth Carver, both of Roxboro; a step-grandson, Tommy Shotwell; a step-great-granddaughter and a step-great-grandson.
Pallbearers were Tony Long, Raybon Long, Alvin Long, Jack Blalock Jr., Glen Blalock and Tommy Shotwell.

William Featherston Jr.

MAYS LANDING, N. J. – The funeral for William (Pick) Featherston Jr. 53, of Mays Landing, N. .J. who died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002 in Atlantic City Medical Center in Atlantic City, N. J., will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, in Adams-Perfect Funeral Home chapel in Northfield, N.J. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park in Mays Landing.
Mr. Featherston was a native of Durham.
He was formerly employee with Crown Aluminum Co. in Roxboro. He had attended classes at Piedmont Technical Institute, the forerunner of Piedmont Community College.
He attended Faith Crouch Healing Ministries in Egg Harbor Township.
Surviving are a sister, Josephine McGlone of Pleasantville, N.J.; three nieces, Michelle Davis of Mays Landing, Yolanda Borders and Kimberly Arroyo, both of Pleasantville; two nephews, William McGlone of Atlantic City and Eric McGlone of Pleasantville.

Zenobia O. Hollis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The funeral for Zenobia (Sunshine) O’Briant Hollis, 67, formerly of Roxboro, who died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, was conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 28, in Woodlawn Chapel of Roses. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville.
Mrs. Hollis was the daughter of the late Charlie and Odell O’Briant. Her late husband was Buddy Hollis.
Surviving are two daughters, Angelia Garner and Toy Petraska, both of Nashville; a brother Joe O’Briant of Roxboro; three sisters, Hazel O. Smith and Cynthia O. Ford, both of Roxboro and Ruth O. Howard of Las Vegas, Nev.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Horace G. Slaughter

The funeral for Horace Guston Slaughter, 76, of 500 Dirgie Mine Rd., who died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston, Va., following a brief illness, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 2, in Surl Primitive Baptist Church by Elder David Minter and the Rev. Stewart Crank. Burial will be in Allensville United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Slaughter was a native of Person County, the son of the late R. Gus and Fatima Stanfield Slaughter.
He was a farmer.
He was a Primitive Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Wilverlen Pleasant Slaughter; a son, Steven Horace Slaughter of Roxboro; a daughter, Cindy S. Henry of Emerald Isle; two sisters Alma S. Moore of Portsmouth, Va. and Virginia S. Bunn of charlotte; two grandchildren, Shane Slaughter and Stephanie Slaughter, both of Roxboro; and a great-grandchild, Seth Michael Ellixson of Roxboro.
Pallbearers will be Matt Wicks, Carl Whitlow, Willie Chandler, Ermand Painter, Keith Pleasant, Earl W. Clayton, John King and James Findley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Crumpton, Rudolph Robertson, Bill Dunkley, Howard Nelson, Joey Adcock, William Whitefield, Wiley Flynn, Alfred Gentry, Robert W. Gentry, Jessie L. Riley, Reggie Yarboro and Billy Perkins.
Memorials may be made to Allensville United Methodist Church, c/o John D. Gentry, 1704 Gentry Ridge Rd, Roxboro, NC 27573, or to Surl Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Dorothy Clayton, 215 Charlie Moore Rd., Timberlake, NC 27583, or to the American Lung Association.

Carol L. Stevenson

Word has been received here of the death, on Dec. 17, 2001, of Carol Lee Stevenson, 74, of Belton, Texas.
Mrs. Stevenson was a native of Alton, Va., the daughter of Bernard and Frances M. Pulliam Loftis.
She was reared in the Timberlake area of Person County and was graduated from the former Mt. Tirzah High School.
A graduate of San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif., she taught art at De Anza College in San Jose.
More than two years ago, she moved from Oak Ridge, Tenn. to Belton, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Newcomers Club.
Surviving are her husband, Gerald H. Stevenson; two sons, Dr. Larry R. Woodward of Belton and William D. Woodward of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Carol Woodward of Belton; two stepsons, Richard Stevenson of Orlando, Fla. and Robin Stevenson of Lake Wales, Fla.; three step-daughters, Geraldine Sult of Lutz, Fla., Anne Parker of Wylie, Texas and Alesia Stevenson of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, A. W. Loftis of Virginia Beach, Va.; four sisters, Laura Alice Rice of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Frances Thomas Yarboro of Roxboro, Jeanne Maynard of Kernersville and Kay Hobgood of Oxford; and nine grandchildren.

Roy R. West

The funeral for Roy Redix West, 92, of Oxford, who died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Oxford Manor following an extended illness, was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in Olive Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Victor Blackwell and the Rev. Tom Denny. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. West was a native of Granville County, the son of the late Ulis Scott and Jeannie Bell West. His late wife was Louise Poole West, and his late sons were Rufus West and Fenton West.
He was a carpenter, retired from George W. Kane Construction, after 15 years.
Surviving are four sons, Melvin C. West of Chester, Va., Ulis S. West of Oxford, Peter J. West of Bluefield, Va. and Wade C. West of Roxboro; two daughters, Weeda W. Buchanan of Henderson and Josephine W. Blackley of Kittrell; 18 grandchildren; ad 19 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons Joseph Buchanan, Tim Buchanan, Tony Buchanan, Tracy Buchanan, Mike West, Paul West and Scottie West.
Memorials may be made to Olive Branch Baptist Church, 7343 Dirgie Mine Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Coyle H. Williams

DURHAM – The funeral for Coyle Humphrey Williams, 87, of 615 Dunbar St., Durham, who died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in St. Joseph’s AME Church on Fayetteville Street in Durham by the Rev. Philip R. Cousin Jr. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.
Mr. Williams was a native of Person County.
He was retired from N. C. Mutual Life Insurance Co.
Surviving are a daughter, Dolores W. Clement of Durham; two sons, William E. Williams Jr. and George H. Williams, both of Durham; a brother, Daniel Humphrey of the McGhee’s Mill Community of Person County; and a sister, Thelma H. Glenn of Durham; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s AME Church.

Charlie G. Gentry

The funeral for Charlie Graham Gentry, 82, of 1096 Cavel-Chub Lake Rd., who died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 7, in North Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Sterling and the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Gentry was a native of Person County, the son of the late John Roberson and Margaret Carver Gentry. His late wife was Anne Howerton Gentry.
He was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. after 40 years of service.
He served with the Person County Sheriff’s Department as a sergeant where he oversaw the deputy reservists.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the USS Randolph where he witnessed the unconditional surrender of the Japanese.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Wilda Reaves, Carol A. Gentry and Charlene Gentry, all of Roxboro; four sisters, Lottie Melton, Margaret Painter, Geraldine Holder and Peggy Clayton, all of Roxboro; six grandchildren, Amanda Clayton, Steve Gentry, Michelle R. Young, Lesley Ladd, Dustin Carver and Codey Ladd; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke Clayton and Drew Clayton.
Pallbearers will be employees of the Person County Sheriff’s Department.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., today, April 6, at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Dawn M. Barnes

The funeral for Dawn Marie Barnes, 31, of Roxboro, who died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31, in Lystra Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Smith. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Ms. Barnes was a native of Danville, Va.
She was employed with National Jewelry & Pawn in Durham.
Surviving are her adopted father, Henry W. Barnes Jr. and stepmother, Judy Barnes of Chapel Hill; her biological parents, James D. Wells of Ringgold, Va., and Donna J. Petty of Altoona, Pa.; a half sister, Jenny Petty of Chapel Hill; three step-sisters, Jerricca Barnes, Jackie Barnes and Sandy Woody, all of Chapel Hill; and her grandparents, Margie Barnes, Ted Jarrett, Beatrice Adams and Faye McDaniels.

Thelbert T. Dean

OXFORD – The funeral for Thelbert Thomas (Bud) Dean, 86, of 5529 Moriah Rd., Rougemont, who died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, June 8, in Eakes Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Dean was a native of Granville County, the son of the late Tom and Ola Williford Dean. His late son was Millard Ray Dean.
He was a retired farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Fannie Hill Dean; a daughter, Mary Dean Roberts of Rougemont; five grandchildren, Kenneth Hobgood of Oxford, Wanda Hobgood Raymer of Rougemont, Tommy Dean of Lake Gaston, Nancy Roberts of Rougemont and Paula Roberts of Durham; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Lillie H. Duke

ROUGEMONT – The funeral for Lillie Harris Duke, 86, who died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Roxboro Nursing Center, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Wendell Stokes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Duke was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Ernest J. and Pearl Mitchell Harris. Her late husband was Geet Duke. Her late son and great-grandson were L. T duke and Corey Welch.
She was retired from the former Roxboro Manufacturing Co. after 25 years.
She was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy D. Day of Rougemont; three sisters, Maxine Turner, Mildred Carver and Louise Tatum, all of Roxboro; two grandchildren, Carlene B. Harris and Paula D. Probert; and two great-grandchildren, Jayme Welch and Dustin Harris.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Latta, Eddie Rowland, Lanny Welch, Rocky Carver, Scott Tatum and Howard Rogers.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Building Fund, 1655 Mt. Harmony Church Rd., Rougemont, NC 27572.

Carroll B. Dunkley

A memorial service for Carroll Brandon (Brad) Dunkley Jr., 49 of 2075 Semora Rd., who died Monday, June 3, 2002, at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by his cousin, the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn. Burial was in Concord United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Dunkley was a native of Person County, the son of Elsie Green Dunkley Van Keuren of Deep Gap, who survives, and the late Carroll Brandon Dunkley.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Brandi Dunkley of Charleston, S.C. and Jana Dunkley of Roxboro; and a sister, Cherri Dunkley Stowers of McIntyre, Ga.
Memorials may be made to the Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Rachel G. Carr, 800 Flem Clayton Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Dallas H. Norris

DURHAM – The funeral for Dallas Hughes Norris, 76, of Durham, who died Sunday evening, June 2, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital, was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, in First Baptist Church in Durham by the Rev. Dr. Gerald Goodwin. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Norris was a native of Person County, the son of the late Charlie and Artelia Brown Norris. His late siblings were Arthur Norris, Herman Norris and Annie Lou Norris Parker.
He was employed with Kenan Oil Co. and Tops Petroleum Corp. for more than 50 years.
He was a U. S. Army veteran, having served in Germany from 1950 to 1952.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was deacons chairman and Sunday school director and teacher. He also chaired several other committees through the years.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Altaree Estes Norris; two daughters. Rebecca N. Keith of Beavercreek, Ohio and Susan Norris Grider of Timberlake; four brothers, Hubert Norris of Thomasville, Rainey Norris and David Norris, both of Hurdle Mills, and Hassell Norris of McLeansville; a sister, Lottie N. Walsh of Roxboro; three grandchildren, Allison and Erin Keith and Cole Grider; and a step-grandson, Brandon Grider.
