Ernesteen B. Mize

DANVILLE, Va. – A graveside funeral for Ernesteen Blair Winn Mize, 79, of Rt. 8, Mount Cross Road, Danville, Va., who died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at her home, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, June 8, in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Allen Holder.
Mrs. Mize was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., the daughter of the late James Lipscomb and Lucy Murphy Blair. Her first husband was the late Archie I. Winn.
She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County, where she owned and operated Winn’s Store in the Vance Community.
She moved to Florida in 1976 but returned to Danville in 1989 to make her home.
She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Albert Mize; three step-sons, John Mize of Mt. Herman Community, Ray Winn of Richmond,Va. and Archie Winn Jr. of Trenton, N. J.; a step-daughter, Catherine W. Oakes of Swansonville, Va. and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville.

Jean W. Raines

HAMPTON, Va. – A memorial service for Norma Jean Walker Raines, 62, of Hampton Va., who died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Burial will immediately follow at the Hampton-Veterans Memorial Gardens in Hampton.
Mrs. Raines was a native of Roxboro, the daughter of the late Archie and Geneva Walker. Her late brother was Bernard (Skip) Walker.
A resident of Hampton, Va. for the past 40 years, she served more than 40 years with the Riverside Health System, most recently as vice president of education. She began her career at Riverside in 1961 as a staff nurse on the night shift and later served as night supervisor, in-service educator, and director of staff development.
She held a diploma from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Danville, Virginia where she received the Scholastic Award in 1961. She earned a B. S. degree, magna cum laude from Christopher Newport University in 1994 and a master’s of public administration degree, with concentration in health care administration, from Troy State University in 1994.
In 1998, the National Health Care Association implemented the "Take the Raines" Award in her honor. She holds the distinction of Fellow of Health Care Education from the American Hospital Association.
She was a past president of the American Society for Healthcare Education and Training (Chicago) and was the co-founder and first president of the National Health Care Education Association (Philadelphia). She also served in the Virginia Association for the Society of Healthcare Educators & Trainers, and was elected president in 1980.
Her other honors include the Distinguished Service Award, 1981; Patricia R. Haynes Mentorship Award, 1989; American Society for Health Care Education & Training Fellow, 1989; editorial board for the Riverside Nurse magazine for 18 years; American Society for Health Care Education and Training, Board of Directors, 1992 to 1995; and Who’s Who in American Nursing, inaugural edition, 1984
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, James G. Raines; two daughters, Teresa R. Bassett of Hampton and Jennifer R. Eby of Williamsburg, Va.; and a brother, John Preston Walker of Rougemont, NC.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today, on June 8, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton.

Catherine S. Robertson

DANVILLE, Va. – The funeral for Catherine Smith Robertson, 90, formerly of 12 Kimberly Ave., Danville, Va., who died Thursday, June 6, 2002, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Swicegood Funeral Home chapel in Danville by the Rev. Haywood Alcorn and the Rev. J. C. Raper. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.
Mrs. Robertson was a native of Cascade, Va., the daughter of the late Floyd S. and Sally Seymour Smith. Her late husband was Percy G. Robertson.
Mrs. Robertson had lived in Danville since 1967 and had been a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past three years.
She was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Richard Neal Robertson of Barbersville, Va.; two daughters, Virginia Emerson of Danville and Peggy Lewis of Greenville, S. C.; a brother, William Smith of Martinsville, Va.; three sisters, Mary Heslep of Elleston, Va., and Jettie Taylor and Hilda Weddle, both of Cascade; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Marjorie D. Satterfield

DURHAM – The funeral for Marjorie Deloris Satterfield, 74, of 510 N. Driver St., Durham, who died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Durham Regional Hospital after a period of declining health, was conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in Durham Memorial Baptist Church by Dr. Gerald Goodwin. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Satterfield was a native of Durham, the daughter of the late Luther Thomas and Effie Hall Walker. Her late husband was John Howard Satterfield.
She was retired from the Durham County Department of Social Services where she was a supervisor.
She was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Donald Wayne Satterfield and John Ray Satterfield, both of Durham; two daughters, Beverly Collins of Conover and Patricia Dickerson; a brother, L. T. Walker of Roxboro; two half-brothers, Jerry Walker and Tina Walker, both of Durham; a sister, Margaret Dunn of Roxboro; a half-sister, Faye Lanier of Durham; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lizzie L. Blalock

A graveside funeral for Lizzie Laws Blalock, 93, of 1416 Chambers Rd., who died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at her home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, in New Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Para Drake.
A native of Durham County, Mrs. Blalock was the daughter of the late Joseph Washington and Ella L. Laws. Her late husband was Rex Blalock.
She was a retired nurse’s aide.
Surviving area a niece, Hazel Blalock, and a nephew, Willie Banks Blalock Jr., both of Rougemont; and three great-nephews, Randy Blalock, Wayne Blalock and Rex A. Blalock, all of Rougemont.
Pallbearers will be Randy Blalock, Wayne Blalock, Rex A. Blalock and Wallace Laws III.

Rotha W. Mitchell

The funeral for Rotha W. Mitchell, 90, of 926 Woodsdale Rd., who died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at noon today, Aug. 3, in Allen Chapel AME Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Everlena M. Diggs of Greensboro and Garlene M. Timmons of Newark, Del.; four sons, Fred T. Mitchell and Lamberth E. Mitchell, both of Roxboro; Reginald B. Mitchell of Oregon and Donnie W. Mitchell of Indianapolis, Ind.
Arrangements are by Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Service.

Joseph D. Walker

The funeral for Joseph Dennis Walker, 49, of Roxboro, who died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Person Memorial Hospital following a brief illness, will be conducted at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 4, at Blue Wing Baptist Church by the Rev. J.E. Hall. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Walker was a native of Granville County, the son of the late A.D. and Janice Wardell Walker.
He was an employee of Burlington Industries Inc.
He attended Granville County schools and was a 1971 graduate of J.F. Webb High School. He also attended Vance Granville Community College.
He was a member of Blue Wing Baptist Church where he sang in the male chorus.
He was a member of the Walker Family Missionary Gospel Singers.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Linzsey Walker; a son Joseph Dennis Walker Jr. of Oxford, three daughters, Lesley L. Walker, Delia Kaye Hollins and Delila Faye Hollins, all of Oxford; two sisters, Elsie Jean Johnson and Sandy Muriel Jones; two brothers, A.D. Walker Jr. and Nepoleon Ragland; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Tyshawn Bumpass, Jemecia Tiara Bumpass and LeQuisha Denise Bumpass.
Nephews will be pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., today, Aug. 3, at the church and at other times at 9571 N.C. 96 North.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral and Cremation Services of Henderson.

Charlie T. Fox

SMITHFIELD – The funeral for the Rev. C.T. Fox, 81, of 205 Hillside Dr., Smithfield, who died Thursday night, Oct. 3, 2002, at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, in Clements Funeral Home chapel on Broad Street in Durham by the Rev. Donnie Cash, retired pastor of Union Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens at 3712 Cheek Road in Durham,
The Rev. Fox was the son of the late Eugene Fuller Fox and Cassie M. Buchanan Fox of Roxboro. His late wife of 56 years was Ollie Lee Dickerson Fox. His late siblings were Ivy and Wiley Fox of Roxboro and Pauline Fox Laws of Rougemont.
He was the pastor of several Triangle area churches as well as the associate pastor of Union Grove Baptist Church. He and his wife were charter members of Guess Road Baptist Church in Durham.
He was also a charter member of the Bethesda Ruritan Club.
Surviving are two sons, Carl E. Fox of Smithfield and Charles R. Fox of Wendell, a daughter, Deborah F. of Apex; five grandchildren, Timothy C. Fox, Angela G. Fox, Pamela F. Upadhaya, Joel T. Epps and Joyce A. Epps; three step-grandchildren; a great grandchild, Kevin P. Upadhaya; and four step-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Gene Jenkins, Rodney Thomasson, Bob Dickerson, Larry Ferrell, Mike Walls and Seth Walls.

Laurie E. Maynard

DURHAM – The funeral for Laurie Elizabeth Maynard, 19, of 215 Dustin Ln., Roxboro, who died Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, 2002, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Durham, was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Clements Funeral Home chapel in Durham. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Ms. Maynard was a native of Durham, the daughter of Talmadge E. and Marilyn Lynn Maynard of Roxboro, who survive.
She lived in Durham until moving to Roxboro two years ago.
Surviving in addition to her parents are a son, Tyler Wayne Bryan of the home; a sister, Shannon Dial of Moncure; and her maternal grandmother, Betty Holsclaw of Durham.

Stephanie L. Maynard

DURHAM – The funeral for Stephanie Lee Maynard, 25, of 215 Dustin Ln., Roxboro, who died Friday afternoon, Oct. 4, 2002, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Durham, was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in Clements Funeral Home chapel. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Ms. Maynard was a native of Durham, the daughter of Talmadge E. and Marilyn Lynn Maynard of Roxboro, who survive.
She lived in Durham before moving to Roxboro two years ago.
Surviving in addition to her parents are three children, Brittany Allen, Michelle Allen and Kelly Ware, all of the home; a sister, Shannon Dial of Moncure and her maternal grandmother, Betty Holsclaw of Durham.

Henry C. Russell

The funeral for Henry C. Russell, 93, a former resident of 5115 McGhee’s Mill Rd., Semora, who died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Roxboro Nursing Center following an extended illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 11, in Zion Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie O. Glenn. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Russell was a member of Zion Level Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Geneva Winstead of Peabody, Mass. and Clara Ann Russell of Waldorf, Md.; five sons, Bernard Russell and Robert Russell, both of East Orange, N.J.; Walter Russell of San Francisco, Calif.; Howard Russell of Fargo, N.D. and Donald Russell of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

John D. Tuck

The funeral for John Dennis (J.D.) Tuck, 56, of 304 John St., who died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital following an extended illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, in Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. James Fortner. Burial will be in Wheeler’s Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Tuck was a native of Person County, the son of the late Floyd Edward and Lizzie Wagner Tuck.
He was employed with the Liggett Group.
He was a member of Mountain Road Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Gentry Tuck; his stepmother, Nora Tuck of Oxford; two children John Dennis (Pete) Tuck Jr. of Leasburg and Amanda Tuck Barringer III of Durham; six grandchildren, Russell (Newt) Barringer IV, McKenzie Barringer, Myranda Tuck, Mary Bowen Barringer, Anna Teer Barringer and Jeremy Tuck.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Wilkerson, Bucky Parrish, Ricky Reagan, Dane Clark, Wayne Wilkerson Jr. and Dale Fortner. Antique Car Club members will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., today, Oct. 9, at the funeral home.

James M. Cates

BRONX, N.Y. – The funeral for James Morris Cates of Bronx, N. Y., who died in a Bronx hospital on Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, Dec. 4, in the Church of God in Christ Jesus, Roxboro, by Bishop W.H. Amos. Burial will be in the Blackwell Family Cemetery.
Mr. Cates was the son of Roosevelt Cates of Roxboro, who survives, and the late Christine Blackwell Black.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are two daughters, Tammie Cates of Bronx and Michelle Cates of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sons, Lamont Cates and Calvin Cates, both of Bronx; his grandmother, Virginia Cates of Durham; three sisters, Phyllis Thomas, Louise Cates and Crystal Brooks, all of Roxboro; and four brothers, Joseph Black of Greensboro, Elder Timothy Black, Frankie Black and Bruce Black, all of Roxboro.
Arrangements are by Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Service.

Ada O. Frederick

Funeral arrangements were incomplete Tuesday for Ada Owen Frederick, 100, formerly of 207 Broad St., who died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Roxboro Nursing Center.
Mrs. Frederick was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Henry J. and Susan Elizabeth Clayton Owen. Her late husband was Webb Frederick.
She had been employed by the Roxboro Cotton Mill.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving is a sister, Magnolia Hull of Roxboro.
Arrangements are by Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Roger P. Keel

A memorial service for Roger Phillips Keel, 84, of 63 Harrington Ln., who died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Roxboro Nursing Center will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 3, in Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. DuPre Sanders and the Rev. Johnny Richards.
Mr. Keel was a native of Halifax County, N. C., the son of the late Wiley and Eunice House Keel.
He was retired from the N. C. Department of Corrections, with 20 years of service.
He was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Blanche Washington Keel; two sons, Eddie M. Keel of Elliott City, Md. and Pete Keel of Conover; four daughters, Sarah Ivey of Rich Square, Bettie K. Sorie of Merritt Island, Fla., Bobbie Edwards and Jo Anne K. Jones, both of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the church one our before the service today and also following the service.
Memorials may be made to Forward By Faith Building Fund of Roxboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 348, Roxboro, NC 27573.
