MABEL B. EVANS
BEULAVILLE -- Mabel B. Evans, age 78, died Sunday, February 7, 1999, in Guardian Care, Kinston, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband Willie Evans Jr.
Funeral, Monday February 8, 1999, 7 p.m. at Community Funeral Home Chapel, Beulaville, N.C.; followed by visitation.
Graveside service, Tuesday, February 9, 1999, 10 a.m. East Duplin Memorial Gardens, Beulaville, N.C.
Survivors: daughter, Polly E. King and husband, Luther of Beulaville, N.C.; son, Ralph Evans and wife, Hilda of Elizabethtown, N.C.; three grandchildren, Paul King and wife, Tracy, Jeremy Evans, Alisha Evans; one great-grandchild, Nicholas Evans.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Fork Baptist Church Building Fund.
Arrangements by Community Funeral Home of Beulaville.

RAYMOND G. HAIRE
CARY -- Raymond Glen Haire, 53, passed away at his home in Cary on February 6, 1999. He was born in Fayetteville, N.C. on October 22, 1945. Mr. Haire grew up in Charlotte, N.C. and graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1964. He earned his civil engineering degrees from the University of Arizona in 1976.
Mr. Haire served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1967 until 1971, including a tour in Viet Nam. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service and since 1982 had been stationed at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park.
Survivors include: Jenny Sue Woodrow Haire, his wife of 32 years; daughters, Ashley Raye, age 21, and Kendall Leigh, age 18; his father, Raymond L. Haire and the late Elise Beard Haire of Cape Carteret, N.C.; and two sisters, Janice Heafner of Raleigh, and Sharon Finch of Charlotte.
The family will receive visitors at noon on Tuesday, February 9, at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. D.J. Abernathy of Ridgecrest, N.C., former pastor of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte. Rev Abernathy performed Glenn and Jenny's marriage ceremony in 1966.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Neal H. Woodrow Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Jackson Park Ministries, 5415 Airport Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28208.

HENRY J. "JERRY" STOCKARD
ATLANTIC BEACH -- Henry Jerome "Jerry" Stockard, 77, died Sunday at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
Mr. Stockard was born in Raleigh and retired to Atlantic Beach. He was a graduate of Broughton High School, N.C. State with a B.S. in Engineering and Northwestern University with a degree in Trade Association Management. He served in the US Army during WWII and medically retired with the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Mr. Stockard established the Stockard Organizational Services. He was past president of the Raleigh Rotary and was a Paul Harris Fellow, past president of the Raleigh Jaycees and a Jaycee International Senator. He was a member of Franklin Lodge AF&AM #109 in Beaufort, a Scottish and York Rite Mason and a Shriner with the Sudan Temple in New Bern. He was a member of the Terpsicorean Club, Sphinx Club, Stag Club, the Wolfpack Club and a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at NC State.
He was predeceased in death by his first wife, Euginia Marshburn Stockard.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen M. Stockard; two sons, Henry Jerome "Jay" Stockard IV, of Newport News, VA and Tom Jones, Jr. of Rocky Mount; two daughters, Diane Stockard Wade, of Durham and Nadia J. Sellers of Greensboro; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1604 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

JONATHAN E. SULLIVAN
WAKE FOREST -- Jonathan Earl Sullivan, 18, of Wake Forest, died Friday, February 5, 1999. Mr. Sullivan was born in Wake County the son of S. Thomas Sullivan and Joan B. Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Winford E. Blake and paternal grandfather, Tommy Sullivan.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 1999 in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving are his parents; sister, Melissa R. Sullivan of Wake Forest; maternal grandmother, Miriam H. Blake and paternal grandmother, Alice R. Sullivan; paternal great-grandfather, Buren C. Rose; maternal aunt and uncle, Jeanne R.B. Wendell and husband, Rus S. Wendell; cousins, Stephen P. and Ariana C. Wendell.
The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m., Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC.

JOHN D. SUMMERLIN JR
RALEIGH -- John David Summerlin, Jr., 62, of 5000 North Hills Dr., Raleigh, NC died Saturday, February 6, 1999.
He was a charter member of Spilman Baptist Church. He also was a graduate of North Carolina State University, School of Engineering.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, 1999 at Howard-Carter & Stroud Funeral Home, Kinston, NC. Rev. Lacy Oliver and Rev. Jack Watson officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Howard Summerlin of Raleigh, NC; mother, Rosa Laura Summerlin of Snow Hill, NC; daughter, Teresa Rae Summerlin of Raleigh, NC; son, David Gregory Summerlin of Raleigh, NC; sister, Barbara Barrow of Snow Hill, NC.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his sister Barbara Barrow, Rt. 2, Snow Hill.
Howard-Carter & Stroud Funeral Home, Kinston, NC, in charge of the arrangements.

LAWRENCE HUGHES BLACKWELL
OXFORD -- Lawrence Hughes Blackwell, 70, of 108 Seaman St., died Friday, February 19, 1999 at Granville Medical Center.
A native of Oxford, son of the late Clifton M. and Lillian Hughes Blackwell. A graduate of Oxford High School, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, the plant superintendent of Southeastern Aromatic Turkish Tobacco Co., of Anderson, SC, and was affiliated with Clemson University in the research and development of Turkist Tobacco.
He was the former owner and operator of Blaco Machine, Welding and Produce Co., of Oxford, and engineering consultant to Adams International in Ban Phai, Thailand.
He was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church where funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Dr. Alan P. Swartz. Burial will follow in Hester Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Dianne B. and Vartan A. Davidian Jr. of Raleigh; brothers, James C. Blackwell of Henderson, Maurice R. Blackwell, Billie T. Blackwell, Bobby C. Blackwell, all of Oxford; sister, Mary Helen B. Parrott of Oxford; his grandson, Vartan A. Davidian III of Va. Beach, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 757, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday from Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

LOUISE S. NICHOLSON
RALEIGH -- Louise Nicholson, daughter of Alford and Mary Stephens, wife of Marion Pike "Nick" Nicholson, Jr. died in Raleigh on February 20, 1999. Louise was 77 years of age and had struggled with emphysema for many years. She was born in Dallas, Texas, raised in Burlington and Morehead City, and spent most of her adult life in Raleigh. After graduating from Elon College with a double major in Music and English, she taught public school for several years before retiring to raise her two children. During the 1960o's and 70's, Louise was very active in youth activities at Ridge Road Baptist Church. She will especially be remembered for leading the youth choir and for being a surrogate mom and friend to many. One of her great joys was playing bridge with "the girls" who lovingly brought the game to her when she became housebound and could no longer go out.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 23, 1999 in Ridge Road Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Louise is survived by her two children, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two brothers. The family request that contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, New York 10019 in lieu of flowers, to support the fight against this horrible disease.
The family will be receiving visitors 7-9 p.m. Monday, February 22, 1999 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road.

NORMAN "SARGE" SPELLS
RALEIGH -- Norman "Sarge" Spells, 59, died Monday, February 15, 1999 at his home.
Funeral service will be conducted by Rev. A.E. Matthews, at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 22, in Haywood Funeral Home Chapel.
On Sunday, the family will receive friends at 124 New Rand Road from 3-9 p.m. Burial takes place at Southern Grove Cemetery, Johnston County.

ALMA EDNA ALLEN
FOUR OAKS -- Mrs. Alma Edna Allen, 78, of 2036 Parker Town Rd., Four Oaks, died Saturday at home.
Mrs. Allen was born in Johnston County on November 22, 1920 to the late James William and Leacy Strickland Stanley.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Minshew Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Church Cemetery, Four Oaks.
Surviving are: daughter, Nellie Allen Green of Four Oaks.
The family will be at the funeral home Monday night from 7-9 p.m.

RAYMOND DAVIS CLARK
RALEIGH -- Raymond Davis Clark, 78, of Raleigh, died Saturday. Mr. Clark was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. Mr. Clark was a loving husband and father. He was Vice-President of Production at Athey Products in Wake Forest.A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Clark is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria E. Clark; daughter, Gloria Clark Buffaloe of Hillsborough; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Clark and Charles Pegram of Hillsborough; daughter, Sheryl A. Clark of Raleigh. Mr. Clark is preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Lynn Clark. Also surviving are grandchildren, David A. Pegram of Raleigh, Lee Buffaloe Keefer of Raleigh, Katharine Buffaloe Harris of New York; great-grandchildren, Zachary Keefer and Mary Katharine Harris.
The family will be receiving friends 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St.

ROBERTA S. DIXON
RALEIGH -- Roberta Smith Dixon, 92, of Raleigh, died Friday, February 19, 1999. Mrs. Dixon was born August 30, 1906 in La Grange, NC to Grover Cleveland Smith and Ethel Pauline Pace Smith. She attended La Grange High School and UNC at Greensboro where she received a degree in Business Administration. Mrs. Dixon was a member of Fairmont United Methodist Church attending the Betty Derieux Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star, and Raleigh Women's Club. She was an active volunteer in PTA's and a Girl Scout Leader. During the 1920's and 1930's, Mrs. Dixon was an Assistant Business Manager in Caswell School in Kinston, NC.
A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St.
Mrs. Dixon is survived by her daughter, Dr. Roberta Dixon Gates of Marietta, GA; granddaughter, Mary-Elizabeth Roberta Gates of Athens, GA; grandsons, Fred Hart Gates, II of Norcross, GA and Robert Dixon Gates of Fayetteville, NC; and four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fairmont United Methodist Church, 2501 Clark Ave., Raleigh, NC 27607.

GLADYS WILLIS ETHERIDGE
JACKSONVILLE -- Gladys Willis Etheridge, 98, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999 at Britthaven of Onslow. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at Carlisle Funeral Home in Tarboro. Burial, Edgecombe Memorial Park.
Visitation, 12 noon till 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Surviving: one daughter, Louise E. Jernigan of Richmond, VA; three sons, H.M. Etheridge of Tarboro, Joseph Etheridge of Jacksonville, David H. Etheridge of Phoenix, AZ; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements by Jones Funeral Home.

REV. DR. THOMAS M. FREEMAN
DUNN -- Rev. Dr. Thomas M. Freeman, 84, of Dunn, died Friday afternoon at Rex Hospital after a recent illness.
The Hickory native was a son of the late John Moten and Lola Katherine Hardin Freeman. Dr. Freeman was a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College, earned a B.A. in history and government from Wake Forest University, and earned a Th.M. at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, received an honorary doctorate from Campbell University in 1972. He served pastorates at Pine Level Baptist Church, Kenly Baptist Church, and Thanksgiving Baptist Churches in Johnston Co., Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church in Burlington, Middle River Baptist Church in Middle River, MD, and was pastor of First Baptist Church of Dunn from 1962 until his retirement in 1985. He was named Pastor Emeritus in 1991. Dr. Freeman served two terms as president of the North Carolina State Baptist Convention, president of Christian Action League for several years, served on the home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, as trustee of Campbell University and Wake Forest University and on the Presidential Board of Advisors at Campbell University. Dr. Freeman wrote a religious column for the Dunn Dispatch and Dunn Daily Record from 1962 until his death. He also recorded a weekly Sunday School Lesson distributed by Campbell University to radio stations throughout the state.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Maisie Castlebury Freeman; a son, William H. "Bill" Freeman of Buies Creek; three daughters, Ann F. Gazenbeek of Los Altos, CA, Judith Louise Freeman of Vancouver, WA, and Joy Tilley of Charlottesville, VA; four brothers, Max Freeman of North Wilksboro, Jack Freeman of Reidsville, William Freeman of Atlanta, GA, and Ronald Freeman of Dalton, GA; two sisters, Ruth Brown and Tennie Jones both of Hickory; four grandchildren, Saskia Gazenbeek, Anton Gazenbeek, Catherine van der Salm and Andrew McRae.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at Skinner Funeral Home of Dunn.
Memorial may be made to Hospice of Harnett County, 111-A North Ellis Ave., Dunn, NC 28334.

JOHN W. GRAY JR.
SHALLOTTE -- Mr. John Watt Gray Jr., age 79, of the Shallotte Point Community died Friday, February 19, 1999 at the home of faithful friends, Vernon and Doris Howard.
Mr. Gray was born December 21, 1919 in Rocky Mount, NC and was the son of the late John Watt Gray Sr. and Arabella Delamar Gray. After growing up in Rocky Mount he established a home in Johnston County where he farmed and was a successful construction foreman before moving to the coast 30 years age. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, James William Gray, March, 1998.
He is survived by his sons John Watt Gray III of N. Myrtle Beach, Thomas Wright Gray of Four Oaks, Clyde Nichols Gray of Smithfield; daughters, Blenda Gray Braswell of Smithfield, Judy Gray Franks of Catlesburg, KY; sister, June Gray Radford of Rocky Mount; stepchildren, Danny Lewis of Shallotte and Pat Smith of Jamaica, VT; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gray donated his body to medical research. A memorial service was held February 20 at Jimmy's grave.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
