GREGG NEWHALL JENNINGS
COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Colonel (Ret) Gregg Newhall Jennings, 82, of Columbus, died Thursday, February 11, 1999 at Doctors Hospital after a lingering illness.
Gregg Jennings was born November 19, 1916 in Somerville, MA to Ella Corliss Gregg and John Jennings, Jr., both of his siblings preceded him in death. Ella Gregg was born in Cambridge, MA in 1885. John Jennings Jr., was born in Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland, in 1883 and came to America in 1888. His family settling in the Boston, MA area. Colonel Jennings delighted in his Celtic heritage and corresponded regularly and often visited with his Irish cousins in Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. He subsequently published a genealogy, copyrighted with the Library of Congress entitled "The Jennings Families, 1800-1985; West Cork to New Worlds", entailing the migration of the extended family.
He received an A.B. degree in Business Administration in 1938 from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL. After graduation, while working as an assistant editor for the Commerce Clearing House in Chicago and attending De Paul University Law School during 1940-41, he was drafted into military service. He subsequently received an M.A. in Public Administration in 1970 from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. Throughout the years he continually took graduate and undergraduate courses with the University of Illinois at Champaign; University of Virginia at Charlottesville; University of Maryland, Seoul Korea: and George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He was also a 1966 graduate of the Spanish War College, Madrid Spain.
His 30 year military Career provided a wide range of experience. He was commander of a 700 man Infantry Battalion, Japan: Chairman of a 140 hour nuclear weapons course, Ft. Benning; Chief, Army Logistical Plans and Operations, Korea; Chief, Army Logistical Plans and Systems, Pentagon; Chief, Army Section, MAAG, Spain; Deputy Director, Logistics, SOUTHCOM, Panama Canal Zone; Deputy Director, Plans and Programs, SOUTHCOM, Canal Zone. His final military assignment was Coordinating Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Pentagon, Washington, D.C., in the preparation and coordination of defense aspects of treaty negotiations between the U.S. and the Republic of Panama concerning the Panama Canal. Upon his retirement in December 1971, he was immediately recalled to active duty the following day for an additional six months to continue this important work. He retired the second time in July 1972. During his career he was awarded the Legion of Merit, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; Joint Service Commendation Medal, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; World War II Victory Medal; American Campaign Medal.
After military retirement Colonel Jennings served as Director for the Business Development Center, operated by Tuskegee Institute under auspices of the Office of Minority Business Enterprise Department of Commerce. He retired from this position in 1981.
He was a member of TROA (The Retired Officers Association); Ft. Benning Officers Club; Country Club of Columbus; and Chattahoochee River Club. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus and was presented the George W. Hixon award in 1997. The Jordan High Key Club was his pride and joy. He was presented a special "Grandfather" award by the Key Clubbers for his efforts. He also worked for many years with the West Georgia/East Alabama Better Business Bureau as an Arbitrator. In 1987, he was presented with the first "Abitrator of the Year" award; in 1996 he received the Jack Leech Memorial Award.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Campbell Jennings of Columbus; three daughters, Kimberly Jennings Dean (George) of Nashville, TN; Melanie Jennings Dunn (David) of Ringold, GA; and Dana Jennings (Tom Earnhardt) of Raleigh, NC; one son, David Gregg Jennings (Jan Nunn) of Olympia, WA; six grandchildren, Emily and Amanda Dean Sean and Erin Dunn, Izaak and Rachel Earnhardt. Nieces and nephews: Elsa Jennings Guiney (Tom) of Portland, OR, Sigrid Jennings Stillman (Phil) of Reading, CA; Ceceila Jennings Lingle (Ken) of Colorado Springs, C0, John Matthew Jennings of Los Gators, CA, and their families.

MARK THERON LEDFORD
ASHEVILLE -- Mark Theron Ledford, 37, of 9 South Oaks Circle, Asheville, died Saturday, February 20, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Ledford was a native of Haywood County and was a son of Robert E. and Ann Ward Ledford of Clyde. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees of Science from NC State University and was president of Ledford Engineering, Inc.
He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and was past-president of the Western Chapter of PENC. He coached Little League football, the Termites, Hominy Valley Youth League. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville, the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Ledford is survived by his wife, Lisa Poplin Ledford; two sons, Phillip Ryan Ledford and Joseph Patrick Ledford, both of the home; two brothers, and sister-in-law, Andrew and Lucinda Ledford of Canton and Matthew Ledford of California; and a nephew, Isaac Ledford. He was the son-in-law of Ted and Faye Poplin of Rockingham and brother-in-law of Luanne Poplin of Mount Pleasant, SC.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Morgan and the Rev. Dr. Ron Crawford officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Richmond Memorial Park in Rockingham.
His family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue where Mr. Ledford will remain until being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

LUCILLE JOHNSON MORGAN
CLAYTON -- Lucille Johnson Morgan, 80, formerly of 2328 Shirley Rd., Wilmington, NC, died Friday, February 19, 1999. Mrs. Morgan was born in Archer Lodge, NC to the late Claude James and Maude Lucille Johnson. Prior to her retirement in 1979, Mrs. Morgan was a Mortgage Loan Officer for the People's Savings and Loan in Wilmington where she was employed for over 25 years.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, February 22 in the Montlawn Memorial Park. Dr. Roger Horne officiating.
Surviving is her husband of 60 years, John Wesley Morgan of Clayton; daughter, Eleanor Janice Morgan of Raleigh; brother, David A. Johnson and wife Carol Ann of Youngsville, NC; sisters, Doris Schuck and husband George of Alexander, VA, Helen Todd and husband Louis of Las Vegas, NV, Emily Shirley Johnson of Fayetteville, NC, and Peggy Ann Cannon and husband Robert of North Wilkesboro, NC; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Butler of Charlotte; and grandson Benjamin Wesley Butler of Cary, NC.
Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to a Parkinson or Alzheimer's organization of one's choice.

MARY MAGALENE A. PARKER
BENSON --Mrs. Mary Magalene A. Parker, 81, of 2118 NC 242 S., Benson, died Friday at Smithfield Manor. Mrs. Parker was born in Johnston County on August 4, 1917 to the late George Sidney and Farable Wallace Adams. She was the widow of W. G. "Will" Parker.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Minshew Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Parker Family Cemetery. The Revs. Rickey Lee and Terry Raynor will officiate over the service.
Surviving are: three daughters, Shirley Parker of Benson, Ethel Holmes of Kernersville, and Sue Parker of Willow Springs; 16 half-brothers and sisters; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren..
Family at Minshew Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Sunday night and other times at the home of Shirley Parker, 2118 NC 242 S, Benson, NC..

SAMUEL F. SLEDGE
RALEIGH -- Samuel F. Sledge, 76, died Friday at the Litchford Falls Nursing Home.
Mr. Sledge was a Army Veteran of WWII having served as a Combat Engineer. He was a lifetime resident of Raleigh, and a member of VFW Post 10225, Garner.
Mr. Sledge is survived by a brother, Asheville Sledge of Raleigh; a sister, Letha Lowery of Bunnlevel; also several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7-8:30 at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh.
A graveside will be held 1 p.m. Monday, February 22, in Restlawn Memorial Gardens and will be officiated by Robert Lovette.

VICTOR THOMPSON
SNEADS FERRY -- Victor Thompson of Sneads Ferry, NC died Friday, February 19, 1999 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
He was born on November 5, 1914 in Onslow County, NC, son of the late Ivey and Bertha Parker Thompson.
Mr. Thompson was a member of Folkstone Freewill Baptist Church. He was retired from the restaurant business after 50 years of service and was former owner of Thompson's Restaurant. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Viola "Vicki" McClary Thompson of the home; two sons, Winston Dale Thompson and wife Jane, and Victor Aaron Thompson and wife Sylvia, all of Wilmington, NC; a stepson, Waymoth Batts Jr. of Surf City, NC; two stepdaughters, Brenda Parker and husband Larry of Sneads Ferry, NC and Carolyn Bennett of Wilmington, NC; a nephew, Edward Larson of Wilmington, NC; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lola Yopp of Sneads Ferry, NC.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by Rev. Dale Padgett. Interment will follow in Turkey Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

LEORIA COOK ROWE WATSON
AUG. 18, 1907-FEB. 18, 1999
GARNER -- Leoria Cook Rowe Watson, born August 18, 1907 to John Isaac Cook and Maggie Mitchell Cook, died Thursday, February 18, 1999. A retired elementary teacher, NCAE member, graduate of East Carolina and Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College). She taught in Johnston, Wake and Dare counties. After retirement from Cape Hatteras School in Buxton, she lived in Kill Devil Hills for 25 years and with her granddaughter, Melinda Canady of Garner before moving to Lawndale Manor.
She was preceded in death by her son, Roger Derrieux "Derry" Rowe; husbands, Robert Alvin Rowe and John Preston Watson; sisters, Lela Griffin of Edenton, Mildred Batts and brother, John Cook both of Wilson.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Lou Rowe Penny and husband Horace of Rocky Mount, Ann Rowe Baucom and husband William of Rome, Italy, daughter-in-law, Trudy Rowe Jackson of Maltby, England; grandchildren, Roger D. Rowe, Jr, and his wife Kathy of Montgomery, AL, Melinda Penny Canady and husband Wayne of Garner, Melanie Penny Mangum and husband Donald of Fuquay-Varina, Melissa Penny Murphy and husband Charles of Naugatuck, CT; great-grandchildren, Rebekah Claire Mangum, C. Austin Murphy, III, and Jacob Dexter Murphy; step-grandchildren, Amy Brown and Ashley McKoy and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Watson was also a charter member of Highland Baptist Church, Raleigh, a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and St. Mary's Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly. She was instrumental in the organization of St. Mary's Home Demonstration Club of Wake Co. She was a lover of flowers, animals and her church. Memorials may be made to the church of your choice or to the Leoria C. Watson Endowment Fund, Mt. Olive College, 634 Henderson Street, Mt. Olive, NC 28365, or your local Meals on Wheels.
Visitation will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, on Sunday, February 21, 1999 from 3:30-5 p.m. The funeral will be at Bryan-Lee on Monday, February 22, 1999 at 11 a.m. The family will also receive friends one hour before the funeral. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.

A. WAYNE "BUDDY" BAREFOOT
BENSON -- Mr. Alfred Wayne "Buddy" Barefoot, 44, of 1098 Shade Tree Road, died Monday at Betsy Johnson Hospital, Dunn. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. today at Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel. Officiating will be the Revs. Bobby Smith and Glenn McCullen. Burial will follow in Barefoot family cemetery.
Mr. Barefoot was born February 5, 1954, in Harnett County to Alva Surcey Barefoot Lee of Benson and the late Alfred E. "I.D." Barefoot. He was employed in parts sales and auto sales for Capital Ford in Raleigh. Mr. Barefoot was a member of Stone's Creek Advent Christian Church.
Survivors in addition to his mother include: wife, Carol Morgan Barefoot; son, Bradley Wayne Barefoot of the home; daughter, Amanda Carol Barefoot of the home; stepfather, R.C. Lee of Benson; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis B. and Junior Johnson of Benson.

THOMAS E. KEE
APRIL 30, 1921 - JAN. 24, 1999
RALEIGH -- Thomas E. Kee, whose service at Shaw University covered a period of 41 years, died on Sunday, January 24, 1999 at the Wake Medical Center. Tommy, as he was affectionately known by his associates, was born in Newark, New Jersey the son of the late Floyd and Anna Kee. He began his educational journey in the public school system of Newark. He graduated from the city's Barringer High School. He entered Shaw University in 1939. There, he became well-known as a good student and as an excellent football player.
His education was interrupted from 1943-1946, while he served in the military forces. Returning to Shaw in 1946, he graduated with the class of 1947.
Dr. Kee received the Master of Arts in French from Columbia University in New York City. In 1959, he received Diplome d' etudes Francaises from the University of Bordeaux in France. He later studied during several summer school sessions at various American Institutions of higher learning.
In 1983 Shaw University, recognizing his commitment to higher education, conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. In 1948, Shaw University made him a member of its faculty. Forty-one years later he retired. His work experience had seen him serve as a teacher and as an administrator. As a teacher, he rose to the rank of Professor of Foreign Languages. As an administrator, he served as Dean of Students, Vice President for Student Affairs, for University Relations, for Institutional Relations, and also as Executive Vice President of the University.
He received praise from the administration and co-workers for his dedication. For three years, he served as the chairman of the Selection Committee of the University's Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted into that Hall in 1985.
Among his affiliations and memberships are: Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which he served as Basileus during his college days; Martin Street Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a member of the Board of Deacons, Director of the Male Chorus, and Director of the Choral Choir. He had memberships in many other organizations too numerous to list.
Family members who remember his productive and fruitful life are his wife of 55 years, Elnora McCrimmon Kee; a daughter, Dr. Brenda E. Kee of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Thomas E. Kee and Timothy O. Kee, both of Raleigh; three sisters, Florence Hickman of East Orange, N.J., Norma Crayne of Atlanta, Ga. and Vivian Lampkin of Montclair, N.J.; one brother, Horace Kee of Plainfield, N.J.; five grandchildren, Portia Kee, Andrea Kee, Paris Kee of Raleigh, Alanna Kee Brown and Colin Kee Brown of Louisville, Ky.; one son-in-law, Wayne S. Brown; one daughter-in-law, Dietra B. Kee and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, January 28, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Martin Street Baptist Church, 1001 E. Martin Street.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 29, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Martin Street Baptist Church, with Dr. Charles T. Bullock, Pastor, officiating and Lightner Funeral Home in charge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Thomas E. Kee, Scholarship Fund at Shaw University, 118 E. South Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27601.

WADE C. (CHIP) LEWIS III
Sept. 11, 1947 - Jan. 21, 1999
RALEIGH -- Chip Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wade C. Lewis, Jr., died from a massive heart attack, while in Cincinnati, Ohio on business.
He is survived by his wife, Wylene; his son, Christopher, director of Camp Cheerio in N.C.; and his daughter, Sara, a junior at Indiana University. Their home is in Elkhart, Indiana, where Chip was employed by Goshen Rubber Company, as Vice President of Human Resources. His brother, Dale who has spent most of his adult life in the bush country of Zambia, Africa, is on the staff of N.Y. Zoological Society, serving as a wildlife conservationist.
Chip began the game of golf at age seven, after a bout with Polio. As the years rolled by he continued his love of the game making a name for himself in junior golf tournaments played throughout the southeastern states. He played on Broughton High golf team, and later entered Wake Forest University on a golf scholarship. While still an amateur he played in the U.S. Open and followed that by turning professional. His first job as a pro did little to stimulate his long-term interest in golf, and after a few short years he gave up his professional status and finally regained his amateur standing.
Other survivors include Mr. and Mrs. Edwin E. Flythe, and their son, Skip, who, on numerous occasions played with Chip when participating in member-guest tournaments at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh, N.C. Also, Walter F. Lewis of Topsail, N.C. and Walter F. Lewis, Jr. of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held at St. Michaels Episcopal Church on Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Y.M.C.A. KENNETH DAVIS
NORLINA -- Kenneth Davis, 82, died Tuesday at Maria Parham Hospital.
Mr. Davis was born in Vance County, son of the late Hugh Cheek and Estra Dickerson Davis.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Katie Clark Davis.
Mr. Davis was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Civil Service at Norfolk Naval Base. As a member of the Warrenton Lions club, he served at various offices and committees. Also he was a member of Norlina United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Katie and Harry Hankla of Charlotte, Patricia and Paul Loenig of Pennington, NJ; grandchildren, Kimberly Elyanow of Las Vegas, NV, David Hankla of Lawrenceville, GA, Mark Hankla of Danbury, CT, and Dr. P.T. Koenig III of Sacramento, CA; great-granddaughter, Rebecca Marie Hankla of Lawrenceville, GA; sisters, Sue D. Felts of Warrenton, Kate D. Puryear of Fayetteville; brother, Clarence Davis of Warrenton.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 1999 at Norlina United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Warren Dale Cemetery.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Blaylock Funeral Home, Warrenton.

LOSSIE L. DAVIS
CLAYTON -- Lossie Lee Davis, 76, of 82 Country Lane, died Tuesday, 1/26. Services 11 a.m. Thursday at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Davis Family Cemetery, Middlesex.
She survived by sons, Dallas Davis of Middlesex, Larry Davis of Sims, Ernest Davis of Clayton; daughters, Linda Jordan, Sue Ross, Ann Jones and Sandra Sanders, all of Clayton; sister, Dorothy Creech of Benson; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; step-children, Glenn Davis of Middlesex, Blanche Johnson of Selma, Gerald Davis of Virginia.
Family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
