LILLINGTON -- Mr. James C. Christian, 81 of Lillington, a native of Harnett Co. died at his home on Thursday, January 21, 1999.
Funeral, Saturday, at Summerville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard DePritter officiating. The time of service to be announced. Burial, the church cemetery.
Family will receive friends at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Survivors: wife, Lucille Byrd Christian of the home; three daughters, Faye C. Brown of Lillington, Brenda C. Byrd of South Carolina, Nancy Christian of Wilmington; one son, James A. Christian of Lillington; two brothers, Henry Christian of Lillington, Ray Christian of Carthage; two sisters, Mary Griffin and Mildred Wallace both of Lillington; ten grandchildren, Cindy Collier, Sonya Taylor, Neill Allen Byrd, Brenda McLeod, Allison Boozer, Christopher Byrd, Jason Warner, Jennifer Pretlow, Bryan Christian, Jamie Brown; seven great-grandchildren, Nancy Catherine Garrett, Ashley Christian Taylor, Brittany Lauren Taylor, Mary Morgan McLeod, Megan Christian McLeod, Carson Christian Boozer, Justin Christian Pretlow.

BERNARD M. COE
RALEIGH -- Bernard Michael Coe was born on October 2, 1915, in Saginaw, MI. He left us on January 21, 1999 after a hard fought battle with cancer.
Bernard was a proud veteran serving his country's Army in the 660th Medical Hospital Ship Platoon during WWII, from 1942 to 1945, having served at home and in the Philippines during the war achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. Later, Bernard became an active member of the American Legion.
Bernard married icon Angela Scaletta of San Jose, CA on September 16, 1944. After the war, Bernard and Angela settled in San Jose where they lived and raised their family until just prior to his death. Before his retirement, he was a Bookkeeper for 35 years with American Brother's Produce Company and a member of the Teamsters Union, Local 287 in San Jose, CA. Bernard and Angela spent 54 wonderful years together.
His retirement years were spent with Angela and his extended family. He loved to travel and made many trips across "his" America.
He leaves Angela; his daughters, Maggi Coe of San Jose, CA and her children Marcy, Virginia and Billy, and Bernadette Weingarten, her husband Gary of Raleigh, NC and their children Stephen, Luke, Lisa, and Angela. Also, he leaves behind his sister, Margaret Shippee of Owasso, MI and a large and loving extended family and many special friends.
Services are to be held on 2 p.m. Saturday, January 23 at the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh. The family will greet friends from 12-2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Memorial donations are welcomed at Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605 or any Ronald McDonald House.

MAX H. COOKE
HIGH POINT -- Max Hartsell Cooke, 71, of 1732 Mirabeau Court, died Thursday, January 19, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital following surgery.
Max was born October 15, 1927, in Kannapolis, NC, the son of Herman Smith and Annie Overcash Cooke. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on a football scholarship where he received his Masters Degree. After graduation he was Physical Director and later Executive Director of the Gilvin Roth YMCA in Elkin, NC from 1949-1956. He then came to High Point as the director of the YMCA from 1956-1973. During that time he also founded and directed Camp Cheerio, for the High Point YMCA for ten years. He then took over as the Metropolitan Director of the Central Florida YMCA, in Orlando, FL, consisting of seven branches. He was then called to Raleigh, NC to develop Camp Oak Hill, a summer camp and Christian conference center. Camp Oak Hill was also the first established site for a week long summer camp for Asthmatic Youth in North Carolina.
Max retired in 1989. Throughout his life he was involved in various civic organizations such as the Gideons, Rotary Club, Y's Men's Club of High Point, and Women's Prison Ministry in Raleigh. Max and Helen spent their retirement traveling together to various places and enjoying their time together.
Max was always devoted to his faith and church and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in each area where he lived. He served as elder, Sunday School teacher, and was superintendent of Sunday School over the years. He also led various Bible study groups, and chaired many committees in service to his Lord and church. He was married icon to Helen Harris on December 22, 1947, who survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Virginia "Ginger" Coley, and husband, Van, of Salisbury, Mrs. Amy Jacobs, and husband, John, of Four Oaks, two sons, Jeffrey Scott Cooke, and wife, Linda, of State Road, Kim Henderson Cooke and wife, Pamela, of Charlotte. Max was the proud grandfather of Jay Cooke "Cayce" Cooke, Adam Kapfhamer, Benjamin, Austin, and Zachary Jacobs. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Phyllis Mabry of York, SC, Mrs. Nancy Bleckley of Anderson, SC, Mrs. Gayle Sebastian of York, SC; and two brothers, Herman Cooke, Jr. of Kannapaolis, NC and Sidney B. Cooke of Concord, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack J. Cooke.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. R. Scott Woodmansee, and the Reverend Lisa M. Mullen. Visitation will be at Sechrest Funeral Service, E. Lexington Ave., Friday evening from 7-8:30. Entombment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home until placed in the church thirty minutes before the funeral.
Memorials may be directed to sponsorships for underprivileged children at Camp Cheerio, c/o YMCA, 150 Hartley Dr., High Point, NC 27265 or to sponsorships for underprivileged children at Camp Oak Hill and Retreat Center, 3901 Barrett Dr., Raleigh, NC 27609.

RITA DUNN
RALEIGH -- Rita L. Dunn, of 5021 Sedgewick Drive, died Monday. Funeral service 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Faith Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: daughters, Felisha Dunn of Raleigh; son, Patrick William Dunn of Raleigh; mother, Hattie Winston of Raleigh; sisters, Wanda Smith, Joyce Winston, Janet McLain, Ivy Tillar and Phyllis Hinton, all of Raleigh; brothers, Reverend Howard Winston of Raleigh, Robert Banks Jr. of Raleigh, Ralph Guys of Charlotte, Monte Winston of Raleigh; three grandchildren; fiance, Carlton Arnold of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30-1 p.m. Saturday other times at 428 Solar Drive.

SHERRY ANN EDWARDS
BOONE -- Sherry Ann Edwards, 56, of 233 Ridgewood Drive, Boone, died Sunday, January 17, 1999 at Watauga Medical Center.
She was acting chair of the Art Department of ASU. Mrs. Edwards was a native of Annapolis, Maryland, born January 11, 1943, a daughter of the late John Charles and Alice Villanger Edwards, as an art teacher and artist, professor Edwards had been a member of the ASU faculty for 29 years.
Surviving are two sons, Erick Waterworth of Raleigh and Alex Waterworth of Boone; and two brothers, John "Jack" Edwards and wife, Marietta of Street, MD, and George V. Edwards of Baltimore, Md.
A memorial service for Sherry Ann Edwards will be held Saturday, January 23, at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Boone.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sherry A. Edwards Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the Art Department Foundation, Wey Hall, Boone, N.C. 28608.

ARACELY M. GONZALEZ
RALEIGH -- Aracely M. Gonzalez, 41, died Monday. Jan. 18, 1999. A memorial service will be held 4:30 p.m. Friday, Vena Wilburn Elementary School.
Surviving: sons, Rafael Gudiel Jr., Luis Gudiel, Cristian Mosquera and Kevin Mosquera.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Aracely Gonzalez Trust Fund, c/o Centura Bank.

MARGARET P. GREGORY
FAIRFIELD, IA -- Margaret Pfluge Gregory, 88, died Wednesday at Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield. She was born Aug. 27, 1910 in Monroe, Michigan. She was the daughter of Edward George and Cora Lou Vina Richards Pfluge. She married icon Walton C. Gregory on June 10, 1939 in Charlottesville, VA. Margaret has lived the last six months in Fairfield, Iowa. She previously lived in Alva, Florida. Margaret had a Ph.D in Botany, and did plant research for North Carolina State University for 30 years. She had a life long passion for plants, flowers, hand made ceramics, and other art work.
Surviving: three sons and one daughter, Dr. Walton C. Gregory II of Navasota, TX, Dr. Edward W. Gregory of Galgary, Canada, Dr. Winn Gregory of Batavia, IA, Ruth Whitaker of Pendleton, OR; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Waldron Pfluge of billings, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walton; three siblings, Winnie, Floy, and Dick Pfluge.
The body has been cremated.
A private memorial service will be at a later date.

FREDERICK MICHAEL MARTIN
WALLACE -- Mr. Frederick Michael Martin, 77, of 507 Forest Lane in Wallace died Thursday morning January 21, 1999, at Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 23, from the Padgett Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Frank Lloyd. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Rouse Martin; two sons, Robert Frederick Martin and wife Terri of Townville, SC and Vann Keith Martin and wife Lynne of Clayton; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive at their residence, 507 Forest Lane in Wallace.

THOMAS R. MITCHELL
BONITA SPRINGS, FL -- Thomas R. Mitchell, 61, of Bonita Springs, died Wednesday, January 20, 1999. Born March 23, 1937 in Staten Island, NY he came to Bonita Springs in 1992 from North Carolina. Mr. Mitchell was an Army veteran and the former President and CEO of Reichhold Chemicals.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Joseph St. Lawrence of Durham, NC; his two brothers, Donald of Belford, NJ and William of New York, NY; and his sister, Dorothy Bernal of Staten Island, NY. His beloved grandson, Matthew Thomas St. Lawrence also survives.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, January 23, 1999 in Christus Victor Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions in Thomas' name to the American Lung Association of Gulf Coast Florida, Inc., 1436 Royal Palm Square Blvd., Ft. Myers, FL 33919.

ANN MONROE
RALEIGH -- Tommie Ann Pulley Monroe, of 2-B Hoke Street, died Monday. Funeral 1 p.m. Saturday at Lea Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Chestnut Grove Church Cemetery, Raleigh.
Surviving: daughters, Cynthia Dale Pulley and Angela Pulley, both of Garner, Debra Pulley and Nikki Pulley, both of Raleigh; sons, Dwayne Pulley and Jerry Pulley, both of Raleigh; sisters, Johnnie Mae Becton and Barbara Singletary, both of Wake Forest; 16 grandchildren.
Visitation 12:30-1 p.m. Saturday at Lea Funeral Home other times at 215 Seagrams Court.

RONALD B. MOORE
FRANKLINTON -- Ronald Baxter Moore, 64, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn. died Jan. 20, 1999 in his home after a short illness of Melanoma. He was born in Franklinton the son of the late Kemp Tunstall and Ruby Mitchell Moore. He was also preceded by his brother, Marion Tunstall Moore and his aunt, Emma Moore Ball that reared him. He graduated from Youngsville High School, NC State University and Officers Candidate Navy School in New Port, Rhode Island. He served three years active duty in the U.S. Navy as Lt. Commander and eight years in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He retired as Marketing Director from GAF Fiberglass Company in Nashville, TN. He was owner of Birds and Branches Co. in Mt. Juliet. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two daughters Gwen Moore Martin of Wichita Falls, Texas and Nancy Moore Wright of Shippensburg, PA; step mother, Lula S. Moore of Kitrell, four grandchildren, half brother, Donald Kemp Moore of Apex and half sister, Dora Ann Moore Naylor of Cary, a special friend, Sharon Hefner of Mt. Juliet, a special cousin, Doris Garrett of Franklinton, several nieces and nephew and cousins.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sandling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Murray officiating. Burial, Fairview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 12-2 p.m. at Sandling Funeral Home.

MATTIE GRACE NELSON
RALEIGH -- Mattie Grace McDonald Nelson of 813 Coleman St., daughter of the late Amos and Respie Wilson McDonald was born June 14, 1911. She departed this life Sunday, January 17, 1999.
Funeral service to be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 23, at New Hill Baptist Church, New Hill, NC. Burial follows in the church cemetery.
She attended public school in New Hill, NC and married icon the late James T. Nelson. She was a faithful member of New Hill Baptist until her health declined. After her health declined she still supported her church.
She is survived by her loving family: son, Connie L. McDonald (Letha); daughters, Rosetta M. McNeill; Minnie M. Spearman (Glenn) and Shirley M. Womble (Fallow); a sister, Rachel Mitchell; stepmother, Minnie M. Smith; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

EUGENE D. "PETE" POPE
SMITHFIELD -- Eugene Darl "Pete" Pope, 75, died Wednesday. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church with the Rev. Randall Smith and Rev. Steven Lawson to officiate. Burial will follow in the Hills of the Neuse Memory Gardens.
Surviving are his son, Jeff Pope and his wife, Jenny of Smithfield; daughter, Joyce Lancaster of Smithfield; brothers, Junior Pope, Harold Pope and Jackie Pope, all of Smithfield, Jerry Pope of Manhattan, N.Y. and Charles Pope of Angier; sisters, Hilda Norris and Edith Ann Allen, both of Garner, Jewel Johnson of Wrightsville Beach and Lois Southerland of Smithfield; granddaughter, Tiffany Marie Pope of Smithfield; longtime companion, Lola McFarland of Smithfield and her children, Jimmy and Kathy Ward of Smithfield, Ronnie and Cookie Lawhorn of four Oaks, Charles and Beverly Lawhorn of Four Oaks and Johnny and Joyce Lawhorn of Smithfield.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.

JUNE JOWDY RILEY
MOREHEAD CITY -- Mrs. June Jowdy Riley, 69, a resident of 1225 N. 20th St., Morehead City, died Thursday morning, January 21, 1999 at the Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern.
Graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 24, 1999 conducted by Father Donald G. Baribeau.
The following will serve as Pallbearers: Roger Collins, Joey Kue, Andy Nasset, Pat Brown, Kenneth Hartley and Doc Brown. Honorary Pallbearer will be Milton Brown Jr.
Mrs. Riley was born January 16, 1930 in Washington, NC. She was the daughter of the late Cottie M. Mixon Jowdy and Mitchell Jowdy. Mrs. Riley graduated from Washington High School and attended High Point College and East Carolina University. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Egberts Catholic Church, Morehead City.
She is survived by her husband: James D. (Don) Riley of the home, Morehead City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell E. and (Kay Taylor) Riley of Chapel Hill and Walter (Sandy) S. (Beth Horne) Willis of Morehead City; one daughter, Jennifer (Jennie) L. McCleary of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Jennifer J. McCleary, Zeke T. Riley, Brandon S. Willis, Jessica G. Riley, D. Corey Willis, Raven M. Riley and Megan E. Willis; one great-aunt; Vera Pipkin; four aunts, Olive Morrill, Mary Spiridon, Rachel Nassef and Amanda Brown.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, January 22, 1999 7-8:30 p.m. Bell Munden Funeral Home, Morehead City, on Saturday, January 23, 1999, at 7 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home, Washington a prayer service will be held with the family receiving friends following the service. On Sunday following the graveside service the family will receive friends at the home, 408 Riverside Drive, Washington Park.
