CLEO HILL SIMMONS
KNIGHTDALE -- Cleo Hill Simmons, 77, died Thursday, January 21, 1999. A native of Farmville, NC. Mrs. Simmons was owner and operator of Park Plaza Grill and a member of North Street Baptist Church.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, St. Mary's St., officiating will be Pastor Gene Williams and Rev. Bill West. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park cemetery. Preceded in death by a son, Tommy Ennis. She is survived by her husband, William A. Simmons; sons, George Ennis of Charlotte, David R. Simmons of Wendell; daughters, Jean Williams of Raleigh, Linda Simmons Boyette of Zebulon; brother, Steve Hill of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St.

BERTHA K. WHEELER
FRANKLINTON -- Bertha Kearney Wheeler, 95, died Jan. 21, 1999 at Britthaven Nursing Center. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Clyde Wheeler. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Hunter officiating. Burial, Fairview Cemetery.
Surviving: son, Richard Wheeler and wife, Willie Gray of Franklinton; daughters, Dorothy Mangum and husband, David and Louise Chambers, all of Oxford; brother, Edward "Nick" Kearney of Creedmoor; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends Sat 7-8:30 Sandling Funeral Home; other times at the home of Richard Wheeler, 3099 Cannady Mill Road, Franklinton.

IRIS LYNN O'KELLY ARTHUR
CLAYTON -- Iris Lynn O'Kelly Arthur, 89, of 135 Government Rd., died Thursday, February 18. Graveside service 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Church Cemetery, Rte. 4, Bishopville, SC. Arrangements by McLaurin Funeral Home.
She is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Iris A. and George Supcoe of Clayton; son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Morrison Arthur of Orlando, FL; sister, Norma A. Lyles of Hopkins, SC; brother, Warren R. Alexander of Coleman, FL; grandchildren, Meggan, Ashley, Allen, Caitlyn, Olivia; five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Horne Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, 440 E. Main St., Clayton, NC 27520.

HILLIARD BENNETT
RALEIGH -- Hilliard T. Bennett, 80, died December 3, 1998 at Raleigh Community Hospital of complications following surgery for colon cancer.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, February 20th at 11 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

BURTON COATS
OCT. 15, 1923 - FEB. 18, 1999
RALEIGH -- Burton Coats, 76, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999 after an extended illness. He was the owner/operator of Burton Coats Carpetland for over 30 years in the Raleigh area.
He is survived by three sons, Robert Coats and Ronnie Coats, both of Raleigh, Tony Coats of Virginia; five grandchildren.
Funeral service will be private.

DAVID PAUL CROCKETT
WYTHEVILLE, VA -- David Paul Crockett, 63, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at the Veterans Hospital in Salem, VA. Mr. Crockett was the son of the late Joseph P. and Ruby Smith Crockett, and was a U.S. Army veteran. Memorial service 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale, NC.
The Crockett family will receive relatives and friends immediately following the memorial service from 7:30-9 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

MIRIAM R. DELLINGER
CHARLOTTE -- Miriam Robinson Dellinger, 88 of 5100 Sharon Road, Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, February 17th following a long illness.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Charlotte.
Survivors include her husband, Slay Dellinger of the home; daughters, Cynthia Davis and her husband Glenn of Bennington, VT, and Susan Johnson and her husband of Raleigh; grandchildren, Blaire Johnson Perry of Raleigh, Paige Ann Johnson of Durham; and Neil Robinson Davis of Bennington, VT.
Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center, Charlotte is entrusted.

I.A. "BOPPY" EDWARDS
DURHAM -- Col. I.A. "Boppy" Edwards died Friday night, February 12th, in Duke University Hospital. He had been visiting North Carolina with his wife, Jean Piper Edwards. A memorial service will be held at the John F. Kennedy Chapel at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, on Tuesday, February 23rd at 1 p.m.
Col. Edwards had lived in Sun City over 30 years and was member of the Sun City Country Club. Before retiring in 1969, he had a distinguished career in the United States Army, including combat in World War II and in Korea. He also commanded the 7th Special Forces group and the Ranger Training Command.
He is survived by his wife, his son, William Stephen Edwards of Cary, NC, and his daughter, Drena E. Worth of Hillsborough, NC.

McVAY FOWLER
ANGIER -- McVay Fowler, 75, a self-employed greenhouse operator of Willow Spring, died Thursday. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Chapel of Overby-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Coats officiating. Burial will be at the Sandy Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving; wife, Betty Taylor Fowler; three stepdaughters; several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

THERESA GAMBLE
1912-1999
CHAPEL HILL -- After an brief illness, Theresa Gamble died in her family's home in Chapel Hill on February 17. She was 86 years old. She moved to this area in 1985 from her home near Allentown, Pennsylvania.
She was a retired farmer, laundress, and beautician but she remained an active and wonderful gardener her whole life. Her passionate and productive horticulture provided a colorful and bountiful oasis of flowers and vegetables for her Poplar West Townhouse neighbors in Carrboro, where she lived for the last 13 years.
Her first husband, George Feisthammel, died in 1942 and her second husband, Edwin Gamble, in 1964. She is survived by her sister Katherine Petre of Gernsheim Germany, a brother Joseph and sister-in-law, Margaret Petre, of Missassauga, Ontario; a daughter Marion and son-in-law, Arthur Lewis of North Andover, Massachusetts; a son, George and daughter-in-law, Dee Gamble of Chapel Hill; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Theresa was born in Austria-Hungary (today's Romania) on August 7, 1912 and emigrated to the United States in 1928. She was one of the many illegal immigrants of the period who entered Canada legally and then crossed the river into the US by stealth. She later retraced her steps to Canada and reentered the US legally and eventually became a naturalized citizen. She lived and worked as a laundress in New York City until 1952 when she, her husband and son went to upstate New York, near Cooperstown, to build and operate a poultry farm for egg production. When her second husband, died in 1964, she moved briefly to New Jersey and then settled in Eastern Pennsylvania where she worked as a beautician. Then in 1985 she came South to enjoy the warm climate and to be close to her son and his family.
She will be buried in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, New Jersey.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date with her family in Massachusetts.
Contribution in her memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
Walkers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ROSALIND D. GIBSON
RALEIGH -- Rosalind D. Gibson, of 7728 Crown Crest Court, died Monday. Funeral service 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: husband, Kenneth Gibson Sr.; daughters, Kendra Gibson and Kerra Gibson, both of the home; son, Kenneth Gibson Jr. of the home; parents, Curtis and Louise Williams, both of Raleigh; sister, Takiea Williams of Raleigh; maternal grandparents, Mary and Lucille Brodie, both of Raleigh.
Visitation 7-8 p.m. Friday at Lea Funeral Home other times at the home, 4808 Latimer Road.
A Lea Funeral Home Service, 231-1000.

HETTY E. HENSLEY
RALEIGH -- Hetty E. Spence Hensley, 83, of Raleigh, formerly of St. Albans, WV, died February 2, 1999. Memorial service 11 a.m. Sat., Feb. 20, 1999, Advent Ferry United Methodist Church, Raleigh. Rev. Bryan Faggart will officiate.

JAMES "OWEN" HILLIARD
SARASOTA, FL -- James "Owen" Hilliard, 90, of 4532 Woodside Rd., formerly of Raleigh, NC, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999. Mr. Hilliard was born in Johnston County to the late Fredrick and Berta Jones Hilliard.
His wife Irene Davis Hilliard preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving is a daughter, Angela H. Smith and husband, Jim of Sarasota; granddaughter, Christal Hendrick and husband, Jerry of Selma, NC; grandson, Anthony Smith and wife, Lisa of Sarasota; granddaughters, Candice Cutler and husband Neal of Clayton, NC, Jenny Hendrick of Selma, NC, Brittani and Christian Smith, both of Sarasota; great-grandson, Justin Smith of Sarasota.
The family will receive friends prior to the service on Saturday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC.
Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to the Hayes Barton Baptist Church TV Ministry, 1800 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC 27608-2385.

THELMA FLORENCE HILLIARD
CARY -- Thelma Florence Hilliard, 85, of 204 Dixon Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999 in Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lipscomb Hilliard in 1972.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Apex Funeral Home chapel, 511 W. Williams St., Apex. Rev. Tom Worley and Rev. Kyle Sullivan of Bethel Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Hwy. 70, Raleigh.
She is survived by a son, W. Lawrence Hilliard and wife, Freddie of Wilson; sister, Blanche Silver of New Bedford, MA; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Apex Funeral Home.

PATRICIA "PAT" M. HOUSER
GREENSBORO -- Patricia "Pat" Myrick Houser, 59, died at her home on February 18, 1999, surrounded by family and friends.
Patricia was born in Moore County on April 18, 1939, to William H. Myrick and Mildred Marley Myrick, both deceased. She is survived by her husband, Wayne L. Houser of Greensboro; a daughter, Trisha L. Houser of Chapel Hill; a son, Bradley W. Houser of Raleigh; a sister, Elizabeth M. Whitaker of Carthage; a brother, William H. Myrick, Jr. of Carthage; nine nieces and nephews; and six great-nephews and nieces. She is also survived by and wanted to recognize and thank Linda and Gary Bennett and family.
Patricia moved to Greensboro in 1957 to attend UNCG. She then began working for Jefferson-Pilot where she met her husband. Thereafter, Patricia followed one of her greatest gifts, working with children. She worked for the Greensboro public schools for 22 years, her final position being at Claxton Elementary.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro or to support pancreas cancer research at the Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Pathology, Meyer 7-181, 600 North Wolfe St., Baltimore, MD 21287-5417 (attn. Dr. Hruban).

WILLIAM MILTON JOYNER
SHARPSBURG -- William Milton Joyner, 75, died Thursday, February 18, 1999. He was born June 12, 1923 in Nash County, son of the late Johnny Luther and Mammie Dorsey Joyner. Mr. Joyner was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Langley Joyner and was a member of Sandy Cross United Methodist Church.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Brenda Joyner of Sharpsburg; daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and David Williamson of Sharpsburg; step-granddaughter, Brandy Taylor of Sharpsburg.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rocky Mount Memorial Park, Cross Section with Rev. Jim Robertson and Rev. Jimmy Reavis officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount.

FAIRENE "FAIRY" KEY
HIGH POINT -- Mrs. Fairene "Fairy" White Campbell Key, 84, resident of 2148 Chester Ridge Dr., Apt. E, died Wednesday evening at 6:55 p.m. in the High Point Regional Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past three years. Mrs. Key was born March 13, 1914 in Surry County a daughter of Newton and Lillie Starling White. She had been a resident of High Point most of her life and was a retired employee of New Service Laundry. Mrs. Key was a member of the Oak Hill Friends Meeting. Twice married, she was first married icon to James Dolphin Campbell who died in 1935. In 1969 she was married icon to Manford William Key who preceded her in death in December 1977.
Surviving: daughters, Wanda Mendenhall of the home; sons, James Wayne Campbell of Garner, William David Campbell of 2611 Allen Jay Rd., Alvis Eugene Campbell of Atlanta, GA, Kenneth Monroe Campbell of the home; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Connie White of Jamestown; sister, Mrs. Roger (Elsie) Holder of Elkin.
Mrs. Key was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Posey Campbell.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the Springfield Baptist Church the Rev. Bobby L. Loving and Rev. W. Joseph Neal Jr. Interment will follow in the Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The body will remain at the Cumby Mortuary on Eastchester Dr. until placed in the church 30 mins. prior to the service and the family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and other times at the home of the son, David Campbell, 2611 Allen Jay Rd., High Point.
