SMITHFIELD -- James Dennis Barbee, age 65, died Thursday.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Smithfield's First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jones Barbee; his children, Jim Barbee of Raleigh, Jenny Barbee Pope of Smithfield, Bill Barbee of Four Oaks, and Tina Barbee Gay of Micro; sisters, Allene Pittman of Kinston and Brenda Pittman of Smithfield; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma 7-9 p.m. Friday night and other times at the home of Jenny Barbee Pope, 101 E. Stevens St., Smithfield, NC.

MARY F. BOYKINS
RALEIGH -- Mary F. Boykins, of 1212 Angelus Dr., Apt. B., died Tuesday. Funeral 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthews Baptist. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: spouse, Cecil Boykins Sr. of the home; daughters, Eula P. McAllister, Margie Hunter, Maeverta Johnson, and Linda Williams all of Raleigh; sons, Rev. James Hunter of the home and Cecil Boykins Jr. of Raleigh; sisters, Margie Ray of Washington, DC and Ethel Leggett of Raleigh; also surviving a special niece, Blonnie Mae Dunn of Raleigh; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends; 11 grandchildren.
Visitation, 7-8 p.m. Friday at Lea Funeral Home.

CLARA WALKER BURTON
BURTON -- Funeral service for Mrs. Clara Walker Burton, 81, of 810 Cleveland Street will be held on Saturday, 1 p.m. at Union Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Trice officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
She is survived by two sons, Sammie Burton of Durham and Phillip Burton of Camden, NJ; four daughters, Lillie Mae Montague, Julia Burwell, Sallie A. Burton and Claratha Cooper, all of Durham; three brothers, Adrian, Jack and Frederick Walker.
Funeral arrangements provided by Ellis D. Jones & Sons Funeral Directors.

MARC EDWARD CRUTCHLEY
KNIGHTDALE -- Marc Edward Crutchley, 48, of 215 Westover Drive, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999. Marc graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York in 1972 and lived in Binghampton, New York from 1963 to 1982. He was a partner in McCooch Insurance Agency in Vestal, New York from 1975 to 1982 at which time he moved to Raleigh where he was currently employed with Princeton Insurance Company.
Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel with Father Tom O'Connor of Sacred Heart Cathedral officiating.
Surviving: wife, Elaine Padlo Crutchley; daughter, Anna Crutchley of the home; sons, Michael Crutchley and his wife, Lori of Mystic, CT, Spencer Crutchley of Orlando, FL; parents, Jean Black Crutchley and Edward W. "Bud" Crutchley of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; brother, E. Bryan Crutchley of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; sisters, Marcia Hudson and her husband, Scott of Lake Oswego, OR, Susan Eves and her husband, Stewart of Vail, CO, Anne Benjamin of Swannanoa, NC, Sandra Kemp and her husband, Kerry of Friendsville, PA; several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Anna Crutchley Education Fund, c/o BB&T, 7120 Highway 64 East ,P.O. Box 870 Knightdale, NC 27545.
The Crutchley family will receive relatives and friends immediately after the service in the vestibule of the chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home.

GERALD F. "TEX" DRAKE
KINSTON -- Gerald Franklin "Tex" Drake, age 32, of 2108 Hardee Road, died Wednesday, February 3, 1999. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend, a member of Tanglewood Church of God, a student at Lenoir Community College, employed with Drake Janitorial Service Inc., associated with the Atlanta Braves for seven years, and an avid sports fan.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 1999 from Tanglewood Church of God with Rev. Tim Lanier officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Baxter Drake, and father-in-law, Oscar W. Revere, Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Hannah Revere Drake of the home; children, Sidney, Erica, and William Curtis Drake all of the home; parents; Curtis and Sara Drake of Kinston, NC; sister and brother-in-law; Susan D. Boyd and husband Guy of Cove City, NC; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Zoda Drake of Kinston, NC; mother-in-law, Mrs. Oscar W. Revere of Kinston, NC; brother-in-law, Oscar W. Revere, Jr. of Alexandria, VA; niece, Amy Catherine Boyd of Cove City, NC; and nephew, Ryan Drake Boyd of Cove City, NC.
Visitation at Edwards Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 5, 1999 and other times at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sidney and Will Drake Scholarship Fund, c/o BB&T, 2009 W. Vernon Ave., Kinston, NC 28504.

ADOLPHUS "D.J.,A.J." FORTE
GARNER -- Adolphus Forte, 55, of 300 Gatewood Dr., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999. Memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, 3420 Barwell Rd., Raleigh. Burial 10 a.m. Monday, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving wife, Inez Forte of the home; daughters, Letha Carol Forte of the home, Wendy Forte Akion of Missouri, Regina Dawn Forte of Raleigh; son, Reginald Shawn Forte and Wesley Quintin Forte, both of the home; mother, Mary Forte of Raleigh; brothers, Bennie Forte, Jesse Forte and Roosevelt Forte, all of Raleigh; sisters, Elsie Dunston and Marie Jones, both of Raleigh, Hattie Carmichael of Wilson, Geneva Ofegbu of Nigeria, Minnie Pearl Forte of Raleigh; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Arrangements are being handled by Chappell's Funeral Home, Garner.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home.

RAYMOND JOSEPH GILLIAM
FRANKLINTON -- Raymond Joseph Gilliam, 71, 391 Pocomoke Rd., died Feb. 2, 1999 at Rex Hospital. He was a retired supervisor with Burlington Ind., a veteran of US Army, a member of Pope's Chapel United Church of Christ and American Legion Post #52.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pope's Chapel United Church of Christ with the Rev. Don Ward and Rev. Clyde Waiden officiating. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Annie Lee Gilliam; sons and wives, Ray and Tammy Gilliam, Mike and Julie Gilliam, all of Franklinton; brother, James Gilliam of Abermarle; great-aunt, Lemma Gilliam of Louisburg; grandchildren, Roxie, Joseph and Grey Gilliam.
Arrangements by Sandling Funeral Home.

EFFIE THOMAS HARDY
RALEIGH -- Effie Thomas Hardy, 96, died early Thursday, February 4, 1999 at Guardian Care, Zebulon. She formerly lived at 4000 Sue Lane and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was born April 6, 1902, the daughter of H.B. and Cora King Thomas. Graveside service 2 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 1999 at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 12-1:15 p.m. at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944, Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC prior to the graveside service on Saturday.
Surviving: daughters, Dorothy Hardy Pate and her husband, Thurman Pate of Zebulon, Cora Hardy Alford and her husband, Howard Alford of Milton, WV.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis S. Hardy, 1981 and her daughter, Janice Hardy Martin, 1982.
Seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ROBERT E. HARRIS SR.
HOLLISTER -- Robert Edward Harris, Sr., 84, of 39 Mitchell Street, Hollister died on Thursday morning at his residence. Mr. Harris was a Halifax County native born on January 21, 1915 to the late Bennett Yerby and Ida King Harris. Mr. Harris was a member and longtime deacon at Harris Chapel Baptist Church in Hollister. He was employed at the Halifax County Tax Office for 27 years.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a son, Robert Edward Harris, Jr.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Harris Chapel Baptist Church by the Revs. Todd Garren and Phil Qualls with burial following in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Arrington Harris of the home; one daughter, Laura Harris Smith of Goldsboro, NC; two sons, Thomas Bennett Harris of Hollister and Timothy Arrington Harris of Raleigh, NC; six grandchildren, Gregory B. Harris, Jeff Harris, Brian Smith, Shane Smith, Ashley Smith and Collin Harris; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Harris and Trevor Harris.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Qualls, Quinton Qualls, Carlton Qualls, Harris Spence, Jack B. Crawley, Jim Bennett Harris.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice or Halifax County Home Health Care.

ALLENE H. HOLLAND
FOUR OAKS -- Mrs. Allene H. Holland, 78, of 3025 Allenby Dr., Raleigh, died Thursday at the Brian Center of Raleigh.
She was born in Johnston County on May 8, 1920 to the late Luther and Addie W. Holt. She was the widow of Charles W. Holland.
Her funeral has been scheduled for Sunday 2 p.m. in the chapel of Minshew Funeral Home. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Grove Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Vernon Adams will officiate over the service.
Surviving are daughter, Judith Holland of Knightdale; sons, Graham Holland of Raleigh, Charles Larry Holland of Benson, Jerry L. Holland of Goldsboro; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at Minshew Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 7-9 and at the home of Graham Holland, 3025 Allenby Dr., Raleigh after 3 p.m. on Friday.

MRS. LATTIE PARKER MARLER
NEWTON GROVE -- Mrs. Lattie Parker Marler, 85, of 7733 US HWY 701 South, died Thursday at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel in Benson. The Revs. Frank Sandy and Michael Nevling will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hood's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Marler was born December 25, 1913 in Johnston County to the late Preston and Addie Parker. She was married icon to the late Walter Robert Marler. Mrs. Marler was a member of Hood's Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors, include son and daughter-in-law, Walter Kenneth & Mary Katherine Marler of Fayetteville; daughter and son-in-law, Sue Marler and Luther Norman Johnson of Raleigh; sister, Leola P. Ragan of Fuquay-Varina; granddaughter, Lynne Marler Peters; grandsons, Daniel Sloan Johnson, Marcus Livingston Johnson, and Andrew Marler Johnson; great-granddaughters, Sarah Katherine Peters and Emily Rose Peters.
Family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

INEZ MANGUM POWELL
WAKE FOREST -- Inez Mangum Powell, 76, of 7821 Thompson Mill Road, died Thursday, February 4, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital. She was born in the Falls Community and was the daughter of the late Royster and Lizzie Cates Mangum. She was a member of Wake Union Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday morning in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Les Burleson officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell family cemetery.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her husband of 56 years, Walter R. Powell; daughters, Vickey Powell Crim and Carolyn Powell Fowler, both of Durham; sisters, Janie Mangum Baker and Rachel Mangum Brown, both of Durham; three granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wake Union Baptist Church Building Fund, 13345 Wake Union Church Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Bright Funeral Home.

OSCAR W. REVERE SR.
KINSTON -- Mr. Oscar Willie Revere, Sr., age 79, of 2108 Hardee Road, died Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He was a retired tobacco company employee, veteran of WWII, and member of Pioneer Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 1999 from Tanglewood Church of God with Rev. Tim Lanier officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gerald Franklin "Tex" Drake and three brothers, Raymond, Clyde, and Carroll Revere.
He is survived by his wife, Leona Helmick Revere of the home; a son, Oscar W. Revere Jr. of Alexandria, VA; a daughter, Hannah R. Drake of Kinston, NC; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Shirley Revere of Richmond, VA; sisters, Pauline Grubbs, Eva Stone, Edith and husband Bobby Fletcher all of Richmond, VA; nephew, Jimmy Revere of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Sidney, Erica, and William Curtis Drake all of Kinston, NC.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 5, 1999 from Edwards Funeral Home and other times at the home.

ELMER R. VAN COURT
RALEIGH -- Elmer Ray Van Court, 70, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Mr. Van Court was in the Navy for four years during the Korean War. He retired from the Employment Security Commission in Raleigh after 25 years of service as a Coordinator for the Computer Job-Match Program.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Van Court of Greensboro; son, R. Carlton Van Court of Woodstock, GA; sisters, Margaret McPherson and Christine Phillips, both of Orlando, FL, Frances Fortenberry of Morganton; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 1999 at Raleigh Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 4513 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh, NC 27612.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.
