CAPTAIN CARL WINNER
CAROLINA BEACH -- Captain Carl Winner of Carolina Beach, N.C., died Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
David Carl Winner Sr. was born on June 29, 1911 in Carolina Beach, N.C., son of the late M.I. and Callie Southerland Winner.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Walter Winner, Fred Winner, Zeb Winner, Leslie Winner, Ruth W. Mathews, Annie W. Stallings, Pearl Winner, Register Russell, and Iona Christine Winner Bell and a grandson, Ricky Fountain.
Surviving are his children, Pearl W. Fountain and husband, Jim of Wilmington, M.L. "Chubby" Winner and wife, Rylan of Marathon, Fla., David C. "Skippy" Winner Jr. and wife, Margaret of Wilmington, W.W. "Skeets" Winner and wife, Shirley of Wilmington, and Carolina Beach, Jeannean W. Wiggins and husband, Otis of Wilmington, Douglas Winner and wife, Luana of Raleigh; 21 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
When Capt. Carl Winner was born within 200 yards of the sea back in 1911, a headboat dynasty was also being born at Carolina Beach.
By 1927, he was carrying interested passengers off shore in his boats (which he built himself). In 1927 Carl acquired his first o utboard motor and built a 23 foot boat to accomodate same. He took anglers out at that time for only $1.50 each.
He attended school at Oak Hill by way of a Model T about 4 miles from the beach. Carl was willing to experiment and instituted a shuttle service with his fleet of boats off the surf.
Give him credit as a young businessman selling peanuts aboard the family owned (Wilmington to Carolina Beach train). Wind up his mainspring as a helper with the family owned concessions. Top it off with a love for boats and fishing and having the skills to take a row skiff through the surf with ease while headed to off-shore fishing holes. That was Carl Winner in 1927.
By 1930, he had built 3 boats. After WWII, Carl incorporated the "Amphibious Duck" shuttles from the beach in front of the boardwalk to his boats offshore.
At the beginning of World War II, his patriotism was exemplified when the government commissioned him to hurriedly construct the barracks at Camp Davis and Fort Bragg. This was followed by his return to the sea as a Merchant Marine to assit in the effort to deliver combat men and equipment to the European Theater with landings in N. Africa, Italy and Normandy.
Over the decades, his unselfish heroism is known to many for rescuing lives and vessels from the perils of Mother Ocean.
We are considerably richer for this mans life and work in Carolina Beach, N.C. If God should send another flood, Capt. Carl said "he would gladly build another ark".
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 1999 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel by Rev. Jim Behan.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 8, 1999 in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
