FUQUAY-VARINA -- John Wallace, 74, passed on Tuesday at Rex Hospital, Raleigh. Funeral 12-noon today, First Baptist Church, Holly Springs.
Surviving: wife, Bessie Wallace; three daughters; one son; two step-children; three sisters; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Services under the direction of Trice Funeral Home, Fuquay-Varina.

SALLY WOLBORSKY
RALEIGH -- Sally Wolborsky, 89, of Raleigh, died Friday, March 12, 1999. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Wolborsky of Raleigh; grandsons and wives, Kevin and Jill Wolborsky, Bradley and Jennifer Wolborsky; grandsons, Mitchell Wolborsky and Bryan Wolborsky; great-grandchildren, Corey Wolborsky and Megan Wolborsky.
Mrs. Wolborsky is preceded in death by her husband, Dave Wolborsky and son, Bernie Wolborsky.

MARY ROEBUCK WOOLARD
ROBERSONVILLE -- Mrs. Mary Roebuck Woolard, 88, died Thursday, March 11, 1999 at Martin General Hospital. Mrs. Woolard was born on August 5, 1910 in Halifax County and lived most of her life in Robersonville. Until her retirement she taught school in Bear Grass and Robersonville. She was member of the First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Glynn Woolard in 1949.
She is survived by son Michael Woolard and wife Cecile of Yorktown, Virginia; daughter, Martha Highsmith and husband Herb of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Cassandra Conger and husband Jim; Charlotte Woolard and Theo Highsmith; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Nicholas, and Andrew Conger.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Biggs Funeral Home in Robersonville.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church Robersonville. Burial will follow in Robersonville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Robersonville or the Robersonville Rescue Squad.

CLYDE G. IDOL, JR
RALEIGH -- Clyde G. Idol, Jr., 70, of 3409 Clark Ave. died suddenly Sun., Feb. 21, 1999. Mr. Idol was a native of Sandy Ridge, Guilford County, NC, the son of the late Clyde G. and Rachael Idol. He was a graduate of Oak Ridge military Academy.
Mr. Idol had been active in real estate appraisal in Raleigh since 1955. He was a former member of the Appraisal Institute as well as a member of the Optimist Club of Raleigh and the N.C. Arabian Horse Association.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh where he was an elder and a deacon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thurs., Feb. 25, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery near Colfax.
Surviving are his sons, Ronald Idol of Kissimmee, FL, and Tony Idol of Jewett, TX, as well as his daughters, Sherri Furr of Wake Forest and Tina Zito of High Point, NC; a step-daughter, Mrs. Paula Hollowell of Woodland, NC; six grandchildren, Christopher, Shawna, Kelsey, Madison, Nicholas and Alexander; three brothers, William Idol of Greensboro, Daniel Idol and Bruce Idol, both of High Point; three sisters, Irene Stack and Lois Hedgecock, both of Colfax and Virginia Nuckles of High Point.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wed., Feb. 24, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St.

RALPH WALTON
RALEIGH -- Ralph Jr. Walton of 611 E. Garner Rd. was born on October 13, 1933 to Hiram and Lucy Rowland Walton. Ralph died Friday, February 19, 1999 at home. Funeral service to be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 24, at Haywood Funeral Home Chapel. Burial follows in Carolina Biblical Gardens.
He was educated in Wake County Public Schools and at the time of his death he was self-employed.
He leaves to mourn a beloved sister, Mary Myatt of the home; a brother, Eddie Walton of Raleigh; two brothers-in-law, Johnnie H. Myatt of the home and Macon Williams of Smithfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; along with a special friend, Rachel Dunston of Raleigh.
Wake will be at the funeral home from 12:30-1 p.m.

SUSAN HEATH ALLEN
RALEIGH -- Susan Heath Allen, 70, died February 21, 1999 at her home. Susan was born in High Point and was a long time resident of Raleigh. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Susan was preceded in death by parents, James and Madge Heath.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Cary D. Allen; daughter, Betsy Williams and her husband, Rev. Samuel Williams of Burlington; daughter, Suzanne Armstrong and her husband, Robert L. Armstrong of Raleigh; four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 10 a.m. Wednesday followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity U.M.C., 824 N. Bloodworth St., 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

CLARA MATTHEWS BALLENTINE
NOV. 16, 1915 - FEBRUARY 21, 1999
RALEIGH -- Mrs. Clara M. Ballentine, of 4209 Tryon Road, died Sunday, February 21, 1999 at Rex Hospital. She was born and raised in Raleigh, Wake County, Raleigh, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Ella Matthews Fletcher.
A woman who deeply loved and was loved by her family, is survived by three sons, Arthur Ballentine (Helen), Louis Ballentine (Kate) and Rufus Ballentine (Shirley); a sister, Clydia Hill; two brothers, Alton and Dallas Matthews.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Friday, February 26, and the funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, February 27. Both services will be held at Watts Chapel Baptist Church, 3703 Tryon Road, Raleigh, N.C. Burial follows at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to Clara Ballentine Scholarship Fund, c/o Watts Chapel Baptist Church.

HALLIE E. BATCHELOR
MAYSVILLE -- Mrs. Hallie Evans Batchelor, 72, died Monday, February 22, 1999.
Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. George Packer and the Rev. Greg Salyer officiating. Burial to follow in the Evans Family cemetery.
Surviving: son, Durwood J. Batchelor of Garner; daughters, Sudie Sullivan of Atlanta, GA and Ann Freeman of Maysville; brother, Percy Evans of Maysville; sisters, Lula Mae Riggs of Maysville, Estelle Morton and Ruby Williams of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. today at Sayland Funeral Home.

WILBURN COLUMBUS CLARY
GAFFNEY, SC -- Wilburn Columbus Clary, 86, died Tuesday, February 23, 1999, at his home. He was born July 31, 1912 in Gaffney, South Carolina to Novella Harrell and Judson Columbus Clary. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and received a Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Mr. Clary worked at the Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem from 1937 to 1968, where he coached varsity sports, taught, and was Principal of the school. He was later named Assistant Superintendent. He was the owner of Sportsman's Supply Company where he worked until his death.
Mr. Clary was a renowned athlete, chosen as an All-American in football at the University of South Carolina. As a football official he worked more than 374 major collegiate games in the old Southern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1939 to 1978. He as an avid tennis player and won numerous titles in the Senior division in Winston-Salem. He served as the Executive Secretary of the Western North Carolina Athletic Association from 1949 to 1977 and served as Booking Agent for officials for the South Atlantic Conference from 1975 to 1993. He helped train and scout officials for the Atlantic Coast Conference and the South Atlantic Conference.
He received the Collegiate Commissioners Association Award in 1990, the Distinguished Service Award from the Children's Home Alumni Association in 1992, the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in 1987, was named an honorary member of the North Carolina Football Coaches Association in 1993, a Life Member of the North State Officials Association, and in 1989 was honored by his friends and fellow Officials for his years of service as an official and supervisor. He was considered one of the country's foremost experts on collegiate football rules.
He was inducted into the Forsyth County Sports Hall of Fame in 1983; the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1988; the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1998, and the National Collegiate Hall of Fame in 1989; being the first football official to be so honored. The award reads that it is presented to Wilburn C. Clary for outstanding officiating ability in intercollegiate competition, sportsmanship, integrity, character, and his contribution to the sport of football.
Mr. Clary was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Jean in 1991. He is survived by four children: W. Jean Hussey and husband, Mike; Jo Allison Smith and husband, Eddie; Wilburn C. Clay II and wife, Linda; and Thomas Judson Clary and wife, Karen; six grandchildren; Christopher B. Smith, Melanie C. Wright, Kristie, Allison, Megan and Thomas Clary, and by four great-grandchildren: Gracie, Sudie, Anna Kate Smith and Kaitlyn Rollings.
The accomplishments of his life were numerous, but the real success in his life came from the children and people whose lives he impacted with his integrity, love, courage, and the conviction that no matter how difficult the challenge, one could succeed.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Mr. Clary's memory to the Piedmont Triad Alzheimers Association, 200 N. Cherry Street, Winston-Salem, 27101, or Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, 27103. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 24, from 7-9 p.m. at Vogler's Chapel on Reynolda Road. His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem by Rev. Michael Brown.

ETHEL D. COMPTON COMPTON
RALEIGH -- Ethel D'Arey Compton recently of Raleigh, died on Monday, Feb. 22, 1999. She was born in New York City on March 22, 1918. She married icon Vernon Orville Compton on June 29, 1940 they lived in Scotch Plains, New Jersey and moved to NewBerlin, New York shortly after WW II. She will be cremated and her ashes are to be scattered on the hilltop where she spent some the happiest years of her life.
She is survived by many who loved her dearly; her three children, Dale Compton of Trayhill, NC, Joilin Johnson of LaFayette, CO, Lynne Cruze of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Robert Lee, Janet Strawbridge, Susan Hauer, and Deborah Taylor, all of Florida, Annabel Kellum, Michael Cruze and Tamara Kenworth, all of North Carolina; seven great-grandchildren, Robin Daniel, Ryan, Bradley, Nicole, Pierce and Shelbie; three nieces, Patricia Workowski, Barbara Hallock and Kathy D'Arey; two nephews, William and Robert Yancey and also by many cousins too numerous to mention but who meant the world to her through their love and support.
Ethel moved from Florida to North Carolina in 1974; dividing the years between Southern Pines and Raleigh. She lived with her daughter, Lynne Cruze for the past three years when her health began to fail.
She was a poet and freelance writer for most of her life, beginning in her pre-teen years. She was a staff writer for American Greetings and sold her verses to many of the major card companies throughout her adult life; as well as writing a column for the local newspaper in Newport Richey, Florida and a weekly poem published in The Pilot, a local newspaper in Southern Pines, NC.
One of her proudest accomplishments was in having one of her poems chosen for the 30th commencement exercise at North Carolina State University's Agricultural Institute on May 10, 1991.
Ethel mastered the greatest lesson this life has to teach many many years ago - giving to life and to all who crossed her path the love that lived within her heart, often going without so that others might have.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church, attending faithfully until her health failed. She will be missed by all who loved her; her family, her friends and those who simply knew her by the hope-filled and inspiring words she wrote.
There will be a memorial service for family and friends on Saturday, February 27, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the home of Lynne Cruze at 1514 Ashburton Rd., Raleigh.

VIVIAN S. DEES
BAYBORO -- Vivian Sawyer Dees, 99 died Tuesday, February 23, 1999 at Craven Regional Medical Center after a short illness. She was a public school teacher for 35 years.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 25 at the Missionary Baptist Church, Bayboro, NC, with Rev. Eric Hayes and Rev. Michael Roach officiating. Burial will be at the Grantsboro Cemetery.
She was pre-deceased by her husband,Julius G. Dees and her son, Benjamin B. Dees. She is survived by her sons, Julius G. Dees, Jr. of Greensboro, NC, Franklin E. Dees of Huntington Beach, California, and Charles W. Dees of Bayboro; her daughters, Joan S. Hansen of Kent City, Michigan, Eula Dees Walker of Oriental and daughter-in-law, Theresa P. Dees of New Bern; a sister, Reba S. Napp of New Bern; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Vivian S. Dees Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 64, Bayboro, NC 28515.

MAXINE WITHAM HANSEN
RALEIGH -- Maxine Witham Hansen 78, of Sunrise Assisted Living died Monday, February 22, at Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Hansen was born in Portland, Oregon on September 24, 1920. She graduated from Grant High School and earned her undergraduate and Masters degrees from Portland State University.
Surviving are her daughters, Carol Blankenhorn of Raleigh and Marsha Underhill of San Francisco; grandchildren, Kristin, Karl and Richard Blankenhorn all of Raleigh; stepmother, Marjorie Witham of Portland, Oregon; half-brother, David Witham of Portland, Oregon.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Millbrook United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

DELLA LEE McDOUGAL HAYDEN
WAKE FOREST -- Funeral, 11 o'clock Thursday morning, February 25, 1999 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

ASHLEY R. JACKSON MAY 31, 1967 - FEB. 21, 1999
GARNER -- Ashley Ray Jackson, 31, died Sunday. He was the owner of Campus Jewelry and Pawn in Raleigh. Funeral 2 p.m. today, Highland Baptist Church, Garner. Burial, Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Clayton.
Surviving are his parents, Raeford and Patricia Jackson of Garner; brother, Billy Jackson and wife, Kim of Garner; sister, Sarah Leigh Jackson of Raleigh; niece, Nikki Jackson and nephew, Ryan Jackson.
