ALMA HOBBY SORRELL
CARY -- Alma Hobby Sorrell, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999.
We now know what it is like to have a broken heart. Today our mother's name is recorded in the Book of Life and so shall she have life everlasting with the Lord. Out of his love God gloriously provided for all her needs from the day of her birth. During her illness, she was attended to medically in a superb way by longtime physician Dr. William Ginn and many other special Doctors. The Lord selected special critical care nurses to care for mother's every need. What great comfort these people were for all of us.
In human terms her life was far too brief, far too short; but how glorious it was because she was willing to release her life to her creator, back to our Lord. We prayed very specifically that when that hour would come when sustaining life support would no longer be there, she would have great peace in the transition from this life to her everlasting life. More than anything else, we want you to know her great victory when she changed from a mortal being into immortality, exactly as stated in I Corinthians Chapter 15 verse 53-57 "Oh death where is your sting?...But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ".
Alma was born in McCullers and raised off Holly Springs Rd. She was visiting relatives in Cary one summer when she met Philip Sorrell on the back pew of First Baptist Church in Cary during a worship service. She married icon him a short time later at the age of 17. They bought a farm in Cary and the Lord chose his most beautiful and wonderful child, Alma, to be a mother of five children. She lived a glorious life with an enormous faith in Almighty God. Her greatest tragedy was the loss of her sweet husband Philip to leukemia. After a five year battle with leukemia, God provided the grace and strength for Alma to release Philip to the Lord in 1963. Alma was a vibrant, strong-willed woman who loved living life. She loved her church, garden club and her wonderful friends.
She is survived by her children, Dan Sorrell of Fayetteville, Loyd Sorrell and wife, Denise of Cary, Raymond Sorrell of Atlanta, GA, Jean Hester and husband, Jack of Cary, and Irma Clark and husband, Haddon of Cary; grandchildren, Philip Sorrell, Hannah Gregory, Sumer Averett, Jobe Sorrell, Dan Sorrell, Jr., Adam Sorrell, Scott Sorrell, Sterling Sorrell, Colby Sorrell, Brooke Hester, Trey Hester, Mary Lynn Williams, Manly Clark, Philip Clark, Sydney Clark; seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Cary. Burial will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary.
Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Cary, 218 South Academy Street, Cary NC 27511.
