RALEIGH -- Paul William Brooks, 78, of 126 Windel Drive, died Monday, January 11, 1999 at his home. Mr. Brooks retired from Remington-Rand Business Machines, where he was in charge of service maintenance. Paul was a member of Trinity Baptist Church were he served as a deacon and worked there for 10 years. He also served his country in World War II. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 1999 at Trinity Baptist Church. Burial, Raleigh Memorial Park.
Surviving: wife, Anastatia "Statia" G. Brooks whom he married icon December 15, 1945; son, Thomas Paul "Tom" Brooks and his wife, Becky of Knightdale; daughters, Donna B. Branham and her husband, Michael of Arlington, VA, Joanne Brooks of Louisburg, Mary Elizabeth Brooks and her husband, Clancy Philipsborn of Boulder, CO, Susan B. Cavanagh and her husband, Jerry of Raleigh; grandchildren, Paul Brooks, Kristin Brooks, Bert Branham, Bill Branham, Will Brooks, Joslyn Mereness, Laurel Cavanagh; sister, Elizabeth B. Matlock and her husband, M. Taylor Matlock of Montgomery, AL; nephew, Bob Matlock of Atlanta, GA.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC and other times at the home.

JAMES JULIAN CARR
RALEIGH -- James Julian Carr, 89, of 2926 Hostetler St., Raleigh, died January 8, 1999.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ray Carr in 1974.
Surviving are his daughter, Catherine and her husband, Ross Edward Kubeny; three granddaughters, Shelley Kubeny Salmons, Crystal Kubeny Smith and Veronica Kubeny; one great-granddaughter, Mary Catherine Smith; sister, Elizabeth McClintock of Palo Alto, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 13, 1999 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be in the church parlor following the service.
Memorials may be made to the Pastors Fund for Special Assistance at White Memorial Presbyterian Church or a fund of ones choice.
He was born December 20, 1909 in Leesburg, Va., to Josephus and Nell McIntosh Carr. He attended the University of Virginia for a year and a half and then four years at Virginia Tech, graduating in 1933. Arriving in Raleigh February 1936, he married icon Martha Pugh Ray in 1938. He served in the Army 1942-1946 with the 1256 Combat Engineers, HQ Delta Base Section, France. He was discharged as Captain in 1946. He retired from Standard Supply Company in 1975, but later worked part time at Atlas Supply and Jones Supply.
He joined the Exchange Club of Raleigh in 1947 and served as president in 1952-53 and for years he was the chairman of their Christmas Party which is now for abused children. He recently resigned as chairman and it has been named in his honor, the Julian Carr Christmas Party. In the 1970s, he was a child advocate in the Juvenile Court System and in the 1980s, he was a volunteer with Re-Entry, Inc. helping discharged prisoners adjust to reentering society. He was a charter member of Raleigh Area Ministries, a volunteer at the Urban Ministry Center and the Ark Shelter. He was a volunteer at Haven House, Wren House, Loaves and Fishes, Brougton Partners and a charter member of Coalition as well as co-chairman for 20 years. In 1984, he was presented the Sam Jones Award as the Outstanding Exchangite of the Exchange Club of Raleigh and in 1992 was honored with the Book of Golden Deeds.
He missed being a charter member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church by a few months joining in 1946 when services were held at the Colony Theater and Sunday School met in the school next door. He taught Sunday School, was superintendent of Sunday School and served as deacon, ruling elder, church treasurer and member of Christmas International House being chairman for two years. (This project feeds, houses and entertains foreign students during the Christmas Holidays.)
In two separate years he received a Certificate of Appreciation for Volunteer Services from the Governor of North Carolina. The Raleigh Jaycees recognized him as Outstanding Senior Citizen for 1987-88.
He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend to all.

DR. FREDERICK M. NEWBERRY, MD
RALEIGH -- Dr. Frederick M. Newberry, MD was born November 19, 1923, the first of three children, to Julia E. Newberry and the late Fred D. Newberry, in Liberty, N.C. and departed this earthly life on January 1, 1999.
Funeral service was held at Stephen's AME Church in Liberty, N.C. on Monday, January 4, 1999.
Dr. Newberry attended elementary school in Liberty, N.C. and the Rock Creek School in Snow Camp, N.C. After graduating from Washington High School in Raleigh, N.C., he enrolled at A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.
In 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served honorably during World War II in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. This experience solidified his dream of becoming a physician.
Immediately after the war, in 1946, he re-enrolled at A&T and graduated. This was followed by a move north where he entered Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and later, the Chicago College of Osteopathy in Chicago, Illinois, where he received a MD Degree in Osteopathic and General Medicine. His internship was completed at Zieger Hospital in Detroit.
"Doc", as he was affectionately known to all, practiced medicine for over 35 years in Detroit was a 33rd degree mason, and a member of the Kappa alpha Psi fraternity.
He is survived by his mother, Julia E. Newberry of Liberty-Greensboro; son, Frederick Scott Newberry, Detroit, MI; daughters, Kimberly S. Newberry of Los Angeles, CA and Shannon Messer of Detroit, MI; two grandchildren; sister, Mary N. Harris of Greensboro; special niece, Cynthia J. Harris of Raleigh; special cousins, Dr. Joseph Carlos and Michael Carlos and a host of relatives, friends and former patients.
The blessing of "Doc's" life is that he was here with us for seventy-five good years, where he touched many lives and made many friends. As you cherish his memory, may you continue to be blessed.

ALFRED WHELESS ABERNETHY
NASHVILLE -- Alfred Wheless Abernethy, 81, died Saturday, January 9, 1999. He was born February 16, 1917, son of the late Julius Edward and Ruth Wheless Abernethy. Mr. Abernethy was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Cooke Abernethy, a brother, John W. "Buddy' Abernethy, a sister, Sarah Francis Abernethy, and half-sisters, Bessie J. Layton and Beatrice V. Abernethy, and half-brothers, G. Edward, Charles O., and Clatie H. Abernethy. He was a retired service station owner and operator and a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Philippines and Korea. Mr. Abernethy was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and a life-long member of the Nashville United Methodist Church.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, A. Wallace and Jean Abernethy of Rocky Mount; daughters, Gloria Smith and Mrs. Ted "Phyllis' Hardee both of Nashville; grandchildren, Lewis E. Hardee III of Nashville, Amy McGilvary of Carrboro, NC and Chris McGilvary of Atlanta, GA; brother, Julius E. Abernethy of Nashville; sisters, Katherine Marie Boone of Nashville and Ruth May Belch of Castalia.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nashville United Methodist Church with Rev. Lester Jackson and Dr. Arthur Wall officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Nashville United Methodist Church, 209 E. Washington, St., Nashville, NC 27856.

ELEANOR JENKINS HAIRR
RALEIGH -- Eleanor Jenkins Hairr, 76, of Raleigh, died Friday.
She was born April 25, 1922. Mrs. Hairr was a 1943 graduate of East Carolina University. She taught public school in Jamesville, NC, for 14 years. Mrs. Hairr and her husband were members of Longview Baptist Church for 31 years.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's. St. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, Vaden B. Hairr; daughter, Janet Hairr Manuel of Raleigh; brother, Willis D. Jenkins of Virginia Beach, Va; sister, Maggie Jenkins Early of Virginia Beach, Va; grandson, Robert C. Manuel Jr. of Raleigh; and several nephews and nieces.
Family received friends 7-9 p.m. Monday and all other times at 2521 Albemarle Ave.

MAJOR CECIL LEE JOYCE
APEX -- Major Cecil Lee Joyce age 65 of 108 Northcote Dr., Apex, NC (US Army retired) died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999 at Wake Medical Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
Major Joyce was born in Roanoke, VA to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lee Joyce of Boones Mill. He attended Franklin County High School and graduated with honors from Virginia Polytechnic and State University and earned master's degrees from the University of Maryland and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Major Joyce retired from the US Army in 1979 after 27 years of distinguished service which included tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam. He was the recipient of both the Silver and Bronze Stars for Gallantry Under Fire. He began his second career as a Logistics Consultant to the US military in 1979, retiring in 1996.
He is survived by his wife Anne Nelson Dickingson Joyce of Raleigh, NC; his four children, Page Nelson (Northern Virginia), T. Sgt. Edward Lee Joyce, II (US Air Force, assigned to RAF Alconbury, England), Leslie Walker Joyce, Ph.D., (Raleigh, N.C.), and Ashley Joyce Patterson (Raleigh, N.C.); four grandchildren, Ashley Page Jalette, Edward Lee Parry and Owen Lewis Joyce and Hunter Lee Patterson; and his sister, Aileen Joyce Doyle (Snow Creek, VA). He was predeceased by both of his parents and his brother Julian Edward Joyce of Oak Level, VA.
A memorial service will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Mount, Virginia on Thursday, January 14 at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Van T. Renick. HUGH A "SID" NANCE JR.
RALEIGH -- Hugh A. "Sid" Nance Jr., 68, of Coleridge Drive, retired conductor for Norfolk-Southern Railroad, died Sunday, Jan 10, 1999. He was a graduate of Broughton High School.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the funeral home and at other times at 1239 Fairfax Drive, Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Pickral Nance; two sons, George Nance and his wife, Connie of Raleigh, Dan Nance and his wife, Daphne of Fuquay-Varina; two daughters, Becky Lipcsak and her husband, Jimmy of Wendell, Lisa Gordon and her husband, Rick of Rolesville; a sister, Mary Alice Foy Broaddus of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Leslie A. Nance, Phyllis L. Lipcsak, John T. Lipcsak, J. Michael Lipcsak, Allan A. Nance, Ashley A. Gordon and R. Justin Gordon. He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis Wall Nance.

ERMAN W. BERNARD
HIGH POINT -- Mr. Herman Walter Bernard, 81, 301 Cascade Dr., died January 9, 1999 at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born on March 12, 1917 in High Point the son of Abraham and Rose Wagger Bernard. He graduated from High Point High School in 1933 and attended High Point College. He was founder and president of Casard Furniture Manufacturing Corporation from 1948 to 1983 and founder and president of Bernards, Inc. from 1983 to 1994. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 and completed his basic training in May of 1942. He completed OCS in October of 1942 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in December of 1942. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1943 and was shipped out overseas in May of 1944. He continued to serve as reserve officer until his honorable discharge in April 1, 1953. His decorations included the five battles of the ETO and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the Board of North Carolina National Bank, High Point Branch from 1967 to 1988, and chairman from 1981 to 1982; past chairman and director of Tom Haggai Associates and High Point Redevelopment Commission. He served on the board of directors of the Southern Furniture Exposition building from 1972 to 1985 and the High Point Regional Hospital Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1977 and 1981 to 1985. He was chairman from 1981 to 1983 when the new facility was built. He served on the leadership committee for the Building Fund Campaign for the new fifty four million dollar High Point Regional Hospital. He served on the High Point Regional Health Systems board from 1985 to 1988; the High Point Regional Hospital Endowment Board, he currently serves; past president of the CO-Founders Club, School of Medicine, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; served on the board of directors of the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc., he currently serves; served twice as president of the B'nai Israel Synagogue in High Point; past president of the North Carolina Association of Jewish Men; past member of the board of directors of the Blumenthal Jewish Home; past president of the Triad Jewish Foundation; served forty years on the High Point Chevra Kadisha, twenty years as chairman of the Cemetery Committee; served twice as Chairman of the Building Committee of the B'nai Israel Synagogue; past member of the Board of Trustees, at High Point University; a board member of the High Point Community Foundation he currently serves. His awards and milestones included the UJA Prime Minister's Mission to Israel in 1973; Greensboro Jewish Federation Mission to Israel in 1974; leadership member of Boy Scouts of America in 1980; Friend of the Adams Memorial YMCA in 1989; Human Services Award, Honored by NCAJM and the State of North Carolina by Governor Hunt in 1981; donated a pool to the YMCA Camp Cheerio in memory of his beloved brother, Gilbert Bernard; High Point Citizen of the Year in 1982; State of Israel Bonds Honoree; North Carolina Triad Israel Bonds Campaign in 1974; Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina of Medicine in March of 1990; Endowed Herman W. Bernard Trinity Scholarship at Duke University; donated the Bechtler Gold to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Wilson Library; Greensboro Jewish Federation Special Recognition Award for Lifelong involvement in Tikkum Olam in 1994; Hadassah Founder and Hadassah Golden Wreath Society of Major Donors. On December 8, 1945 he married icon the former Zelda Kobre of Danville, VA who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two children, Stephen Bernard, MD and his wife, Shula of Chapel Hill and Rose Ackermann and her husband, Victor of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Taylor of High Point; a brother, Leon Bernard of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Seth and Ariele Bernard and Dina and Donna Ackermann. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Bernard.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the B'nai Israel Synagogue by Rabbi Jerome Fox. Burial will be in the Hebrew Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC 27262 or to the charity of one's choice. Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM CREECH JR.
NOV. 19, 1932-JAN. 10, 1999
ZEBULON -- William "Pete" Creech, Jr., 66, of 14331 NC Hwy. 39, died Sunday afternoon at Wake Med. He worked as a welder at J.M. Thompson Construction for many years and also farmed for many years. Pete was a dedicated member of the Smithfield Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous and would have earned his twenty year sobriety chip in May of this year. This was an accomplishment of which he, his family and children were very proud
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999 at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Wendell. Entombment, Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Zebulon.
Surviving daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Horace Tant of Knightdale, Roxanne and Billy Bullock of Pine Ridge, Sandra and Tommy Watkins of Zebulon, Teresa and Jan Alford of Pilot; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Cris Creech of Pilot; sister, Christine Andrews of Apex; brothers, A.G. Creech, Billy Creech and Wayne Creech all of Zebulon; grandchildren, Stacey Griffin and Gregory Tant, Allison and husband Brad Johnson, Callie Denton, Melissa and Michelle Watkins, Jason and Stephanie Alford, Lauren and Nicholas Creech; step-grandchildren, Trey and Jon Bullock; great-grandson, Damian Johnson.
"Pete" was preceded in death by his parents, Vonnie and William Creech; sisters, Hilda Phillips, Ada Mae Hales; brothers, Allen and Verlon Creech.

WILSON -- B. Inez Finch, 80, a retired nurse from Wilson Memorial Hospital after 54 years, died Jan. 10, 1999. Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday, Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 US 264 West with Rev. Linwood Blackburn officiating. Burial, Rock Hill Cemetery.
Surviving: sister, Hazel Layton of Wilson; brothers and wives, Horace and Helen Finch, Charles and Cecilia Finch, all of Wilson; nieces and husbands, Judith and Charlie White of Central, SC, Elizabeth and Billy O' Neal of Chapel Hill; nephews and wives, Jimmy and Kathy Flowers of Atlanta, GA, Steve and Cathy Flowers of Annandale, VA, Charles and Joann Finch of Garner, Tommy and Teresa Finch of Wilson; 13 great-nieces and nephews; four great-great-nieces and nephews.

PAULINE CONNER GARDNER
KNIGHTDALE -- Pauline Conner Gardner, 84, a resident of Britthaven Nursing Center and former resident of 106 Evelyn Drive, died Monday, January 11, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Graveside service 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 1999 at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, VA.
Surviving: daughter, Barbara Gardner Jennings and her husband, Robert Jennings of Knightdale; grandchildren, Lisa Jenning Perry, Ned Perry Jr., Randall Powell, Carrie Powell; great-grandchildren, Robby Braswell, Nora Powell, Shane Powell, Amanda Perry and Adell Perry.
Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband, William James Cannon Gardner in 1957 and by a granddaughter, Lynette J. Powell, in 1987
Nephew, Michael Allen Conner of Salem, VA; niece, Patricia Conner Johnson of Yountville, CA.

ALBRO T. "AL" GAUL
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Albro T. "Al" Gaul, 81, formerly of Hobgood, passed away November 10, 1998 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Al was a teacher, author and inventor who taught Science for a number of years at Hobgood Academy.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY and married icon to Frances Duke Gaul (deceased 1977). Mr. Gaul is survived by a son, John W. Gaul, a geologist in Raleigh, NC, a daughter, Mary Gaul Roberts, a homemaker in Colorado Springs, Colorado, six grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several cats.
The funeral services were held in Colorado Springs and the family requests that anyone wishing to offer a remembrance for Mr. Gaul can do so by making a contribution to the local Humane Society.

ANDREW M. "ANDY" GAUL
DAYTON, OH -- Andrew M. "Andy" Gaul, 54, formerly of Scotland Neck, passed away November 17, 1998 in Dayton, Ohio. Andy was a chef who specialized in catering, whose career included working for restaurants in New York and Ohio.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY and married icon to Patricia Dawson Gaul. Mr. Gaul is survived by a brother, John W. Gaul, of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Mary Gaul Roberts, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a cat, Patches.
The funeral services were held in Dayton, Ohio. The family requests that anyone wishing to offer a remembrance for Mr. Gaul can do so by making a contribution to the local Humane Society.
