MERLIN JOHNSON
WELDON - Miss Merlin Johnson, 90, a resident of Weldon for 74 years, died about 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, after an illness of a few weeks. Born near Tillery on May 22, 1908, Miss Johnson was the youngest of four children, and the only daughter, of Florence Morgan Johnson and Essex Johnson Jr. Her father was the son of Essex and Lucinda Johnson of the Conoconnara area, and her mother's parents were Paul and Melissa Morgan of Northampton County.
In her early childhood, Miss Johnson worked with her family, farming in the Tillery area. Because of her mother's insistence that her children be educated, Miss Johnson was a capable graduate of the Rosenwald School near Tillery. And with her remarkable knowledge and memory, she was a fountain of Conoconnara and Weldon history. While living actively in the present, she held on to the past, recalling such things as her fond feelings for the primary school teacher who taught her how to read some years before the First World War.
When the Johnsons moved to Weldon in 1925, she, at 17, began to work and care for several Weldon families, seeing children and grandchildren grow to adulthood before she retired well past the age of 70. After her mother died in 1934, along with her other jobs, she also cared for her father up until his death in 1958. Years ago, Miss Johnson secured a stained glass window in memory of her parents for St. Peter's Baptist Church in Weldon. As her parents had been, she was a devout and faithful Baptist all her life.
Merlin Johnson leaves many nieces and nephews, grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews, and close friends very glad to have known her over the years. The public is invited to a service to remember her, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Cofield Funeral Home in Weldon. Afterward, she will be buried beside her father and near other family members, at Raven's Nest Cemetery, just north of Tillery on NC 561.
