JARVIS W. GAY
DEC. 19, 1919-MARCH 7, 1999
ZEBULON - Jarvis Wilson "Jabo" Gay, 79, of 65 Gay Rd., died Sunday morning at Rex Hospital. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer with the US Navy having served 21 years and a retired meat inspector with the NC Dept. of Agriculture. He was predeceased by his wife, Tony Gay on December 31, 1998 and a sister, Ellie Bell Gay, and a brother, Presley J. Gay.
Graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at Pearce Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Mark Cottrell officiating.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Waddell and Pat Gay of Anchorage, Alaska, Tim and Brenda Gay of Wendell; sisters, Christine Byrum of Raleigh and Thelma Gay of Louisburg; brother, Hillard J. Gay, Sr. of Zebulon; grandchildren, Amy and John Viar, Lynn and Cissie Gay, Sean and Amanda Gay and Brady Gay; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Hunter Grace Viar.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions to Pearce Baptist Church, 4634 Pearces Rd., Zebulon, NC 27597 or to Faith Baptist Church Building Fund, 2728 Mark's Creek Rd., Knightdale, NC 27545.
The family will be at the Gay home, 65 Gay Rd., Zebulon.

ANNE RHODES HOLLOMAN
WASHINGTON - Emily Anne Rhodes Holloman, 69, of 8321 Harps Mill Road, Raleigh, and a native and former resident of Washington, died Sunday, March 7, 1999 in Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 9, 1999 in the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Raleigh at 10 a.m.
The family will receive friends in Washington, Tuesday afternoon from 2-3:45 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at the Holloman family plot in Oakdale Cemetery at 4 p.m.
Mrs. Holloman was born May 8, 1929 to the late Edwin Peterson and Mary Augusta Robbins Rhodes. On June 25, 1929 to the late Edwin Peterson and Mary Augusta Robbins Rhodes. On June 25, 1949, she married Richard Peyton Holloman Jr., who survives.
Her only sister, FranceS Rhodes Jowdy, preceded her in death.
The Hollomans have three daughters: Robbins Holloman Rees and her husband, Bobby Rees, Frances Holloman Penick and her husband, Mike Penick and Elsie Taylor Phillips and her husband, Jimmy Phillips. Anne and Peyton have seven beloved grandchildren: Buc Williams, Daniell Rees, Emily Anne Taylor, Mary-Peyton Robbins Penick, Grayson David Taylor, Michael Steele Penick Jr.and Jimmy "Will" Phillips.
She was a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Raleigh. Anne was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend and Saint.

EVELYN S. HOPKINS
COLUMBIA - Mrs. Evelyn Spruill Hopkins, 87, of the Sound Side Community, Columbia, died Saturday, March 6, 1999 at Chowan Hospital, Edenton, following an extended illness.
Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Janie Spear Spruill. Mrs. Hopkins was a former member of Philippi Church of Christ, Creswell and after marriage to her husband of 64 years, Grady Lawrence Hopkins who survives her, became an active member of Sound Side Missionary Baptist Church, and was a loving homemaker.
Surviving besides her husband are one daughter, Jane H. Hibbs of Asheboro, NC; three sons, Larry Hopkins of Goldsboro, NC, Brian Hopkins of Columbia, NC and Gordon Hopkins of Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 8, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the Sound Side Missionary Baptist Church, interment will follow in the church Cemetery, with Rev. Paul Berry officiating. Walker Funeral Home, Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

BARRY D. JACKSON
BURLINGTON - Mr. Barry D. Jackson, 40, of 1533 N. Sellars Mill Road, Burlington died Saturday at Triangle Hospice of the Meadowlands, Hillsborough.
A native of Alamance Co., he was the son of Mr. John Troy "J. T." Jackson and Mrs. Sallie Bell Jackson both of the home.
Working for many years in B & J Restaurant, the family business, Mr. Jackson also worked in Food Service in New York and other areas.
Along with his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Robin Jackson Bostian of Burlilngton and Ms. Sallie Michelle Jackson of Garner. Also surviving are aunts, Mrs. Vada Stewart and Mrs. Margaret Hawley, both of Godwin and two uncles, Owen Leroy Bell of Burlington and Charles Ray Bell of Pineola.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the City Lake Baptist Church in Burlington with burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1001 Corporate Dr., Hillsborough, NC 27278.

JANET H. KATZENELSON
RALEIGH - Janet Hornung Katzenelson, 82, of Raleigh, died Saturday, March 6, 1999. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sharon Gardens, Yonkers, N.Y.
She is survived by her sons, Jerald Katzenelson of Yonkers, N.Y. and Mitchell Katzenelson of Raleigh; daughter, Judith Deborah Bownstein of Buffaloe, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
Those considering memorial contributions may make them to Beth Myer Synagogue, 504 Newton Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27615.

BETSY L. PEACOCK
MOREHEAD CITY - Betsy L. Peacock, 66, died Sunday at her home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, with the Rev. King Cole officiating.
Mrs. Peacock was a long standing member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and an avid Bridge player.
She is survived by three daughters, Debbie Lassiter Little of Durham, Anna Christy Peacock of Hopewell, NJ, and Sarah Stansbury Peacock of Chicago, IL; five sons, Mark Charles Lassiter III of Durham, Andrew Edgerton Lassiter of New Bedford, MA, Robert Howell Peacock of New York, NY, John Merritt Lear Peacock of Goldsboro and William Ellery Peacock of Raleigh, and 11 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hope Mission Soup Kitchen, P.O. Box 3601, Morehead City, N.C. 28557.

GEORGE PHILLIPS
RALEIGH - Mr. George Phillips, 64, of 3117 Merrianne Drive, Raleigh, died Sunday March 7, 1999 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Pinewood Memorial Park, Greenville.
Mr. Phillips, a native of Pitt County, had been a resident of Raleigh since 1969. He was owner and operator of Phillips subcontractors in Raleigh.
He is survived by: wife, Sherry Clark Phillips; sons, Johnny F. Phillips of Raleigh, Randall Phillips and Brandon Phillips of the home; daughter, Lisa Lorek of Wilmington; uncle, Sam Matthews of Greenville; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home, Greenville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rex Cancer Center, 3800 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, N.C. 27607.

MABEL POWELL ROGERS
SEABOARD - Mrs. Joseph Jackson Rogers, 91, of Seaboard, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, following an extended illness.
Born Mabel Lee Powell, October 31, 1907, she was the daughter of Rosa Pope and John J. Powell of Enfield, N.C.
She was educated in Enfield schools and at East Carolina University. She taught school in Seaboard for 36 years.
Mrs. Rogers is a member of the Northampton Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society. For many years, Mrs. Rogers was a devoted member and Sunday school teacher of the Seaboard Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her many philanthropic works by many students who were touched by her teachings, and with love and affection by her husband and nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her husband, J.J. Rogers of Seaboard and 86 nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held, Monday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at Seaboard Cemetery by Rev. Bert Kirk.
Memorial contributions may be made to Seaboard Baptist Church, P.O. Box 357, Seaboard, N.C. 27876.
Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, N.C., is handling arrangements.

CLYDE B. "HOSS" SASSER JR.
KENLY - Clyde Buren "Hoss" Sasser Jr., 61, died Sunday. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving are his sisters: Emmalene S. Joyner of Chesapeake, Va. and Jo Ann S. Woodard and Pat S. Radford both of Princeton; one niece and four nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Parrish Funeral Home in Princeton and at other times at his home. 4749 Princeton-Kenly Road, Kenly.

CONNIE VARNELL
COURTLAND VA. - Connie Bailey Varnell, 54, of Marle Hill, died March 7, 1999 at his home. Mr. Varnell was born in Elm City, N.C., and was a longtime Southampton County farmer. He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church, a 27 year member of the Army Reserves, a member of the Courtland Ruritan Club and Nottoway Investment Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bette Jackson Varnell; his daughter, Beth Varnell Nace and her husband, Edward, of Franklin, Va.; his son, Jonathan Edward Varnell of Courtland, Va.; his mother, Doris Gardner Varnell of Elm City, N.C.; his brother, George W. Varnell of Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Lee and April Nace.
He was predeceased by his father, John Warren Varnell.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Speight officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence and suggests that memorials be made to Courtland Baptist Church.
Wright Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

MATTIE FLOWERS WALKER
COATS - Mrs. Mattie Flowers Walker, 91, of Oak Hill Living Center, formerly of Coats, died Sunday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home chapel in Coats. The Revs. Bill Altman and Chuck Herrin will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Angier.;
Mrs. Walker was born May 27, 1907 in Harnett County to the late Alex and Cora Pollard Flowers.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rufus J. "R.J." Walker and son, Leon Walker of Raleigh. Mrs. Walker was a Homemaker and a member of the Coats United Methodist Church.
Surviving include daughters, Lottie Harward of Sanford, Sue Denning of Coats, and Janice Seeley of Raleigh; sons, Stacy Walker of Coats, Billy Walker of Sanford, and Gerald Walker of Benson; sister, Vera Gregory of Fayetteville; brother, Fletcher Flowers of Coats; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.
Family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats from 7-9 p.m. Monday and at other times at the home of Junius and Sue Denning, 1111 Denning Rd., Angier.

NOLA T. BECK
RALEIGH - Nola Lillian Thomas Beck, 94, died Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Mrs. Beck was born June 6, 1904 in Edenton, the daughter of Emmett and Lucy Thomas. She came to Raleigh in 1922, where she lived the rest of her life. Mrs. Beck was an active member of First Vanguard Presbyterian Church and later of the Salvation Army Corps of Raleigh, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Even as a shut-in, she continued her faithful ministry to members of her church via cards and the telephone.
Mrs. Beck was predeceased by her husband, Jesse Carroll Beck in 1962.
Surviving are her son, Emmett (Tom) Beck of Garner and her daughter, Dorothy Mae Beck Smith of Raleigh; grandchildren, Nola Smith Penny, Lucy Smith Latta, Sue Smith Greene, Robert A. Smith, Linda Beck Bradley, Kathleen Beck Grimes, Richard Emmett Beck and Steven Alan Beck; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday, 1 p.m. at the Salvation Army with interment following in Montlawn Memorial Park. Friends may visit Sunday, 3-5 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St. or other times at 1208 Indian Creek Trail, Garner or 1020 W. Peace St., Apt. T1, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 902 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27604.

SAM LeROY ELLIS
CARY - Sam LeRoy, 74, died Friday at his home.
A native of Clayton, he was the son of the late Sam and Mabel Hardee Ellis. He served in the Army Air Force in England in World War II. He graduated in 1953 from the School of Engineering at N.C. State. While employed as an engineer at Muirhead Construction Co., he was involved in the construction of Dorton Arena. In 1964, he founded Ellis Construction Co. in Sanford and was the general contractor for many private and government facilities throughout the state. His most significant achievement, the construction of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Sanford, was a monument to his engineering talents and his faith in God. He remained actively involved in the construction industry and was employed by Accent Reprographics at the time of his death.
A selfless individual in his professional and personal life, his priority was providing for his children.
He is survived by his children: sons, J. Sam Ellis of Raleigh, Jeremy Gunter of Atlanta, Ga., Jason Gunter of Greensboro, Jonathan Y. Ellis of Cary; daughters, Susan E. Marshall of Richmond, Va., Sherry E. Eason of Charlotte. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary Ellen Haralson of Stone Mountain, Ga., Maxine Smith of Clayton, Helen Douglas Hinton of Burlington; brother, Russell Ellis of Raleigh; nine grandchildren.
Funeral service and inurnment will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Sanford at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. Visitation in the parlor will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of choice.
