ANNA JEAN H. GUION
RALEIGH - Anna Jean Hallman Guion, a resident of Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh, and formerly of Marshville, NC, died on March 28 at the age of 93. She was born in Marshville, NC on June 15, 1905. Her husband Howell N. Guion, who she married in 1933, died on July 17, 1998. She was the last survivor of the eight children of the late John Frank Hallman and Anna Jean Perry Hallman. Mrs. Guion taught in the Marshville Elementary School for about 40 years before her retirement in 1967. She entered Woman's College in Greensboro (now The University of NC at Greensboro) in 1924 and also attended Duke University for teacher training. She was an accomplished artist, continuing a Hallman family trait for creativity. She also loved flowers and worked in her yard until moving to Raleigh.
During her tenure as a fourth grade teacher, she affected the lives of hundreds of children. Mrs. Guion said, "I believe the children should have freedom in the classroom to a certain extent, but this freedom must have direction from the teacher. Freedom in education above all implies respect for the personal integrity of the teacher and the pupil. Each child needs guidance in art, projects of all sorts, music and all the subjects taught in fourth grade."
Her church, the First Baptist Church of Marshville, was a major focus for her all of her life until she and Mr. Guion moved to the Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh in 1990. She taught Sunday School in the primary department, sang in the choir, and was active in Woman's Missionary Union and other church programs. Friends said that everytime the church doors were opens he was there.
