PAUL HALL ROACH
RALEIGH - Paul Hal Roach, 56, died Sunday, March 7, 1999 at his home.
Mr. Roach is survived by his two sons, Ronnie Hal Roach of Angier, NC and Daniel Roach of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Gary Roach of Arden, NC; three sisters, Sybil Roach and Katherine Whaley both of Raleigh, and Linda Airington of Clayton, NC; and two grandchildren, Patrick Roach and Whitney Roach.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

RUBY E. ROBERSON
PITTSBORO - Ruby Evelyn Roberson, 64, died Monday, March 8, 1999. Ms. Roberson was the daughter of the late Robert Oren and Lillie McIver Roberson Sr. Ruby was a native of Chatham County and worked at Chatham Mills for 42 years.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Griffin Funeral Service Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ray Gooch and the Rev. David Daly. Interment will follow in Chatham Church Cemetery.
Ruby is survived by her close friends and "special" sister, Frances Wagner; her sister, Betty Jean Whitt and husband, Donald; brother, Bobby Roberson and wife, Vicki; nieces, Robin Davis, Donna Whitt, Wendy Phillips; nephews, Nakia and Preston Roberson, all of Pittsboro.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Griffin Funeral Service in Pittsboro.

JONATHAN "STUMPY SHORTY" ROSEN
ANGIER - Jonathan "Stumpy Shorty" Rosen, 38, died Friday. He was an Angier and Black River Fire Fighter. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Overby-Johnson Funeral Home. Burial, Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Route 2, Angier.
Surviving: wife, Gloria S. Rosen; daughter, Victoria Pearl Rosen; son, Raymond Michael Rosen; mother, Lucille Rosen; father and stepmother, Mr. & Mrs. Meyer A. Rosen of New York; sister, Mindy Pape of Kings Park, NY; two brothers, Harvey Rosen of Great Neck, NY, Robert Rosen of Farmingdale, NY.
Visitation, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Black River Fire Department.

LUCILLE B. VICKERY
RALEIGH - Lucille Butler Vickery, 81, died Saturday, March 6, 1999 at Western Wake Hospital in Raleigh.
She was a native of Indianapolis, Ind. and moved to Raleigh five years ago. She was of the Presbyterian faith. Mrs. Vickery was a Quality Control Inspector for Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Co. in Indianapolis for 20 years. She was also a member of Eastern Star for over 50 years.
She is survived by her husband, William A. Vickery; daughter, Georgina Wallace of Raleigh; four brothers and two sisters, all from Indiana.
People who wish to pay their respects may drop by the home.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

JACK DAVID WHITE
LUMBERTON - Mr. Jack David White, 79, of 908 East 7th Street, Lumberton, NC, died Monday, March 8, 1999 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Graveside service at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 1999 with Rev. Joe Bounds at Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Robbins, NC.
He was born in Columbus County and a Seaman in the Merchant Marines and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He worked for 36 years with Southern Bell before his retirement in 1984. He dearly loved camping and was a lifelong gardner. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.
Surviving: spouse, Edith C. White of the home; one son, Larry and wife, Margaret White of Cary, NC; one daughter, Gail and husband, Charles Welbourn of Greensboro, NC; one sister, Geneva Herrin of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren, Brian Welbourn, Jeffrey White and Amy White.
He was preceded in death by his parents John David and Mattie Williamson White.
Memorials may be made to any charity or organization that is connected to youth work.
The family will receive friends, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday night at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory, Inc. in Lumberton.

PATRICIA A. JONES
RALEIGH - Patricia Hinton Jones, of 2705 Daytona Drive, died Monday, June 21, 1999.
Funeral service to be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, June 24, 1999 at Haywood Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation at the funeral home on Thursday, 12-12:30 p.m. Interment takes place at Carolina Biblical Gardens.

JAMES B. (MINNIE) LILES
RALEIGH - James B. (Minnie) Liles of Raleigh, NC, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Liles was born in Selma, NC on June 10, 1911, the son of the late John W. and Lillian Cawthorne Liles. When he was one year old, he moved with his family to Raleigh, where he attended both Lewis and Wiley Elementary Schools, and Raleigh Jr. High School. He graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1930 and attended N.C. State College from 1930 to 1935.
A career Army officer, with 32 years of service, Mr. Liles started his working career in 1915 at the age of 4 when he sold the News & Observer at the corner of Fayetteville and Martin Street. In 1923, he began a paper route with the N & O which he continued for seventeen years. From 1940 to 1942, Mr. Liles wrote a daily column for the News & Observer about Raleigh men in the military service.
From 1930 to 1940, Mr. Liles served in the North Carolina National Guard, 30th Infantry Division, "Old Hickory." This unit was mobilized into federal service in September 1940. During World War II he served with the Old Hickory in the European Command, landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day+4. Following the war, he was assigned to Vienna and Salzburg, Austria. Other tours of duty were inRaleigh, as Sr. Advisor of the N.C. National Guard, Anchorage, Alaska, Seoul, Korea and Fort Bragg, where he retired in 1962, as a Chief Warrant Officer W-4.
Throughout his Army career, he was awarded many commendations and medals. While in Seoul, the South Korean Government gave him a Certificate of Appreciation, which was approved by Congress, for his work with them in setting up a classification system. He also worked with American missionaries in Korea to raise funds from friends in the United States to build and orphanage.
After his Army retirement, he worked with Baxley's Food Service and was the Wake County Enforcement Officer for the Wake County Planning and Enforcement Department until retirement in 1976.
Mr. Liles remained active until very recently. His association with the 30th Infantry Division remained near and dear to his heart throughout his lifetime. He was a charter member and a chief organizer of the Tar Heel Chapter of the 30th Infantry Division Association. He served as Secretary-Treasurer for the Tar Heel Chapter for years and maintained contact with hundreds of World War II veterans and spouses throughout the Untied States. In 1990, at its National Reunion, the 30th Division awarded Mr. Liles the "Old Hickory Award" a great honor presented to a member for outstanding service to the Association.
Mr. Liles and his wife have been active members of St. John's Baptist Church for many years. In their earlier years, they were members of North Street Baptist Church. He was also a member of the William G. Hill Masonic Lodge and participated in numerous civic groups. As an active senior citizen, Mr. Liles has been a member for many years of the BYB Club (The Best is Yet To Be), sponsored by the City of Raleigh.
Surviving are his wife, Cora Alice Griffin Liles; two daughters, Alice Sharpe and husband, Robert of Raleigh and Jane Burns of Louisville, KY; granddaughters, Cindy Sharpe Keen of Raleigh, Donna Sharpe Campbell and husband, Craig of Winston-Salem and Diane Burns of Louisville, KY; great-grandchildren, Mark John Keen, Duke and Christy Campbell, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 1999, in St. John's Baptist Church by Rev. Richard Wynne. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC and other times at the home of Robert and Alice Sharpe, 916 Ravenwood Dr., Raleigh, NC.

BESSIE G. BALLARD
ANGIER - Bessie G. Ballard, 90, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, Overby-Johnson Funeral Home Chapel Rev. Henry W. Lee and Rev. Tom Newman officiating. Burial, Harnett Memorial Park, near Lillington.
Surviving: son, John A. Ballard of Angier; sister, Mildred McKenzie of Lillington; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Ballard of Wilmington; granddaughter, Scotty Ballard; grandson, Dan Ballard.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Angier United Methodist Church, Angier 27501.

GRACE LASSITER BOYETTE
FOUR OAKS - Mrs. Grace Lassiter, 72, of 8876 NC 210, died Monday at Wake Medical Center. Mrs. Boyette was born in Johnston County on Nov. 19, 1926 to the late Shepherd R. Lassiter and Annie Barnes Lassiter. She was the widow of Grayson Boyette. Her funeral has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Minshew Funeral Home.Burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The Rev. Billy Nowell will officiate over the service.
Surviving in addition to her mother are: son and daughter-in-law, David Earl and Gail Cooke Massengill of Four Oaks; granddaughter, Donna and husband, Brian Harris of Fayetteville; grandson, John and wife, Joanie Douglas Massengill; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Trevor and Jenna Harris, Dakota and David Ranson Massengill; sister and brother-in-law, Gladys Lassiter and J.C. Johnson of Tifton, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward and Mary Keene Lassiter of Dunn, Phil and Linda Parker Lassiter of Four Oaks.
Memorials may be sent to Benson Senior Center, P.O. 782, Benson NC 27504.

EDWARD F. BOYETTE III
DEC. 23, 1942-JUN. 22, 1999
SMITHFIELD - A memorial service for Edward Fountain Boyette III will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Bruce Taylor and Rev. Richard Williams.
Ed was a native of Smithfield, the son of Mrs. Katherine Aycock Boyette of Smithfield and the late Dr. Edward F. Boyette, Jr. He had been a building contractor for the past 15 years.
Surviving in addition to his mother; daughters, Margot Boyette Carter of Charlotte and Michelle Boyette of Raleigh; a sister, Rebecca Ann Boyette Kinkade of Fayetteville.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Katherine Boyette, 106 East Parker Street, Wednesday from 7-9 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 East Market Street, Smithfield, NC 27577 or UNC Chapel Hill General Alumni Association, P.O. Box 660, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

ALLIE THORNTON HAIRR
CLINTON --Allie Thornton Hairr, 91, died Monday night at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church (U.S. Hwy. 421, Clinton) with the Rev. Johnny Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Hairr was a life long resident of Sampson County, but had resided with her daughter in Raleigh for the past seven years. She was a active member of her church all of her life, where she especially enjoyed teaching the adult Women's Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hairr also enjoyed her many varieties of flowers from her yard, which she worked constantly.
Her husband, Mr. Ransom Hairr and a son, Darroll G. Hairr preceded her in death.
Surviving: daughters, Frances H. Morgan and husband, Hillard of Raleigh, Carol H. Tharrington and husband, Ed of Garner; grandson, Billy English of Fuquay-Varina; granddaughters, Barbara English of Raleigh, Jan T. Hamburg of Clayton, Vicki Pope of Clinton; great-grandchildren, Chad English, Samantha and Madeline Pope.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton.

SUSIE S. HAULENBEEK
DOVER, DE - Susie Spruill Mohorn Haulenbeek of Dover, DE, formerly of Oriental, North Carolina, died June 19, 1999 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Ron Smith of Dover. She was 78.
A graduate of Women's College (now UNC-Greensboro). Mrs. Haulenbeek was a native of eastern North Carolina. Born in Littleton, NC and raised in Weldon, NC, she lived in New Jersey most of her adult life. She returned to Oriental in 1977.
Her husband of 48 years, Garrie B. Haulenbeek, preceded her in death in 1994.
She is survived by three daughters and their husband, Libby Patnovic and John of Chestertown, MD, Alice Smith and Ron of Dover, DE, Susan Storch and Bill of Getzville, NY; sister, Ballard Cutchin of Whitakers, NC; six grandchildren, Mason Smith, Kevin Smith, Beth Patnovic, Martha Patnovic, Amy Patnovic, and Anne Storch.
A memorial service will be held at the Oriental United Methodist Church in Oriental, NC, on Friday, June 25, 1999.
The family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

ANNIE BELL G. HAWKINS
ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Annie Bell Gates Hawkins, 83, died Monday, June 21, 1999 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Oscar Lee Hawkins. She was born in Orange Co. the daughter of the late Dallas Gonway Gates and Nancy Frances Jane Breeze Gates. She was a member of Flat River Primitive Baptist Church in Roxboro.
Funeral 1 p.m. Thursday, Lowe Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Pine Hill Cemetery. Elder Paul Clark of Flat River Primitive Baptist Church in Roxboro will officiate.
Surviving: sons, Donald Lee Hawkins and Billy Jerome Hawkins, both of Burlington, Jimmy Beam Hawkins of Durham; sisters, Izona Murray, Birdie Adams and Mary Lou Talley, all of Roxboro; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: sister, Mae Frances Gentry; brothers, Dewey Gates, Phillip Gates and Dallas Gates.
Mrs. Hawkins will remain at Lowe Funeral Home through the funeral service.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home other times at the son's home, Donald Lee Hawkins, 2847 Snug Harbor Rd., Burlington.

OTELIA "FAY" JONES
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Otelia "Fay" Jones, 82, died June 20, 1999. She was a native of Granville Co. and the daughter of the late Bobbie Nicholson and Wallace E. Gupton. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 1999 in Jacksonville, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, James E. Jones; daughter, Courtney Fraser Windsor; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Mission Families, Normandy Baptist Temple, 5634 Normandy Ave., Jacksonville, Florida, 32205.
