FUQUAY-VARINA - Virginia Senter Currin, 79, a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, died Saturday, January 23, 1999.
Funeral service 11 a.m., Monday, January 25, at the Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church. Burial, Harnett Memorial Park.
Mrs. Currin was a retired Harnett County School teacher; a lifelong member, Sunday school teacherand organist at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church; WMU association director for several years, a Harnett County Guardian Ad Litem, and an avid collector and traveler.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Ray Currin; daughter, Candy Taylor of Clinton; son, William S. Currin of Chalybeate Springs; son-in-law, Cary B. Taylor III; daughter-in-law, Stella H. Currin; grandchildren, Jess and Georgia Howard, Senter and Grayson Currin; brothers, John Aaron Senter of Lillington, Dr. W.J. Senter of Raleigh, and Grayson Senter of Fuquay-Varina.

WILLIAM DOUGLAS DAVIS
SELMA - William Douglas Davis, 62, died Sunday Morning.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his mother, Ruth Rose Davis of Selma; sister, Peggy Newsome and her husband, John of Raleigh; special Companion, Leah Hamilton of Garner; cousin, Jean Jones of Cary; niece, Joy Oliver and her husband, Kendall of Wake Forest and a nephew, Jeff Newsome of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

ROGER N. LANGSTON
MICRO - Roger Neal Langston, 58, died Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Valerie Thrash Langston; daughter, Amy Ferrell of Wilson; brothers, J. R. Langston of Johnson City, TN, Wilbert F. Langston of Lake Butler, FL, and James E. Langston of Micro; and one grandson, Leo Ferrell.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

SYBIL R. MANGUM
APR. 28, 1933 - JAN. 23, 1999
RALEIGH - Sybil Rogers Mangum, 65, of 10726 Mary Lou Lane, passed Saturday after an extended illness due to several bouts with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Mangum and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Amos Rogers. She retired due to her health disability from the North Carolina Department of Correction, Correctional Center for Women in 1985.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Interment, Mangum Family Cemetery, Mangum Dairy Road, Wake Forest.
Surviving: sons, Kenneth Mangum of Raleigh and Phillip Mangum of Garner; daughter-in-law, Cathie Mangum; grandchildren, Jamie and Christie Mangum; sisters, Betty Smith of Angier, Judy Medlin and Helen Batts, both of Raleigh; brothers, Calvin Rogers and Allen Rogers, both of Raleigh and Roy Rogers of Nashville, NC. She is also survived by a large group of friends who are regarded as extended family.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, 7-9 p.m. today and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mangum, 6328 Brack Penny Road, Raleigh.
Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made in Sybil Rogers Mangum's name to Hospice of Wake Co., 1300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

KATIE P. OVERMAN
ROANOKE RAPIDS - Katie Elizabeth Pierce Overman, 86, of 519 Vance St., died Saturday, January 23, 1999 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.
She was born November 5, 1912 in Sunbury, NC, the daughter of Willie Benton and Charles Herbert Pierce and was educated in Gates County Schools. She attended Elon College on a scholarship, graduating with a double major in English and French and a minor in music. She taught in the Elizabeth City Schools for several years until her marriage to William Henry Overman, then superintendent of Gates County Schools. The Overmans moved to Roanoke Rapids in 1947 when he became superintendent of the Halifax County system, serving in that capacity for 27 years. Mrs. Overman continued as homemaker, teacher, and community volunteer in Roanoke Rapids until her death. Her community service included serving as a board member at The Union Mission, as a volunteer with Meals On Wheels, and as a long-time member at the Halifax Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She also served as a planner for the Halifax Technical Institute, now Halifax Community College. She was the first teacher of English as a second language at the College, working with the earliest Vietnamese immigrants to our area. As a member of Rosemary Baptist Church for 50 years, her special interest was serving as a volunteer assisting those less fortunate. She will be remembered by her close network of friends all of whom contributed to the quality of her life during the last years. Her family expresses its sincere gratitude to each of them.
She is preceded in death by her husband William Henry Overman and her son-in-law William Lawson Brady, III.
She is survived by her children: Kay Overman Ferrell of Irvine, California, Dr. William Henry Overman, Jr. and wife Pierce of Wilmington, NC, and Mary Overman Brady of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Will and Patrick Ferrell, Katie Carter Sutton, and Sarah Lawson Brady; and one great-grandchild, Carter Russell Sutton.
The service will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, January 25, at Rosemary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at Branch Funeral Home From 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 1999.
In lieu of flowers, her request is that donations be made to the Roanoke Rapids Public Library and The Union Mission.

MICHAEL KENT PENLAND
GREENVILLE - Mr. Michael Kent Penland, 28, died Friday, January 22, 1999. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in Greenville. A second service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Chapel in Burlington. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park, Burlington.
Michael was a longtime resident of Greenville and attended Rose High School. He was a graduate of Hargrave military Academy and East Carolina University where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He had been employed for the past three years in the Office of Admissions and was currently enrolled at ECU in a masters program for a Counselor in Adult Education. He was a member of the First Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cleo and Adele Anderson and Fred Penland all of Burlington, NC.
Surviving: his father, Harold Dean Penland of Fayetteville, NC; his mother, Pam Overton of Tallahassee, FL; and his grandmother, Ruth Cook Penland of Elon College, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Agape, c/o First Christian Church, 520 Greenville Blvd., S.E., Greenville, NC 27858.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Tuesday following the funeral service.

LEETA G. "TINY' PLEASANT
ANGIER - Leeta Gray "Tiny' Pleasant, 62, died Saturday, Jan. 23. Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday at Overby-Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Shawn Higgins officiating. Burial, Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Route 2, Angier.
Surviving: one sister, Betty Jean Vanderwall of Angier; brother, Lyndell Pleasant of Angier.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Brohl and Lillie Smith Pleasant.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at funeral home.

RUTH G. PRUITT
LOUISBURG - Ruth Gordon Pruitt, 87, of 2612 Deer Place, Greensboro, formerly of Louisburg died Saturday at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. at Traphill Baptist Church Cemetery, in Traphill, NC.
Surviving are her sisters, Margaret Driver of Louisburg, Rowena Keith and Mary Helen Layton both of Wake Forest; two nieces and four nephews.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Rolling Road Baptist Church, 2800 Vanstory Street, Greensboro, NC 27407.

EDWARD RANDOLPH SR.
RALEIGH - Mr. Edward Randolph Sr., 76, died Thursday at Wake Medical Center. Funeral service 3 p.m. Wednesday at United Faith Tabernacle Church of Lumberton. Interment, Floyd Temple Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Helen Randolph of the home; one daughter, Sharon Randolph of Raleigh; one son, Edward Randolph of Raleigh.

ADA T. SCHREFFLER
JULY 26, 1920 - JAN. 23, 1999
ANGIER - Ada Townsend Schreffler, formerly of Angier, died Friday at Brighton Manor in Fuquay-Varina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Schreffler on August 6, 1998.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Angier. Burial, Angier Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: daughter, Janice S. McAmis of Ponte Verda Beach, FL; sister, Beulah T. Gregory of Angier; brothers, Bob Townsend of Vilas, NC, Bill Townsend, John Townsend and Mack Townsend, all of Banner Elk, and Glen Townsend of Mountain City, TN; and three grandchildren.
The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier, 2-3 p.m., Tuesday prior to the funeral, and at other times at the home of Beulah and Haywood Gregory, Angier.

MAGGIE M. SPENCER
RALEIGH - Maggie M. Spencer, of 1401 Seabrook Road, died Friday. Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tupper Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: daughters, Ernestine Milbourne and Margaret Bradley both of Philadelphia, Jannie Louise Weldon and Salina Bryant both of Raleigh; sons, Donald Columbus Spencer of Decatur, GA, Samuel Spencer Jr. and Calvin Spencer both of Raleigh; sisters, Hattie L. Carter of Raleigh and Salina R. Jacobs of NY; 29 grandchildren; also surviving, one niece, Etta Mae Lee of Raleigh; and a host of other relatives and friends.

PAUL HILLMAN BROWN
CARY - Paul Hillman Brown, 81, of Cary, died Tuesday at Rex Hospital. Mr. Brown was born in Ashland, Kentucky to the late Andrew J. and Elizabeth Tiebe Brown. He graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Engineering in 1939. Upon graduation, he worked for B F Goodrich in Clarksville, Tennessee for 17 years and continued as a Professional Mechanical Engineer for the remainder of his career.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Carroll Brown of Cary; a daughter, Elizabeth C. Jones of Winston-Salem and a son, Thomas C. Brown of the home; two granddaughters and one great grandson all of Winston-Salem.
The funeral will be held Thursday, March 11, 1999 at 3:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave. by the Rev. Jerry Butt and Rev. Scott Lycan. A private entombment will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

SUZETTE G. FITZGERALD
PINE LEVEL - Suzette Grimes Fitzgerald, 74, died Tuesday at Johnston Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
The daughter of the late Susie Duncan Grimes and H. Winfield Grimes, she was born in Columbia, S.C. and reared in Charleston. She was graduated from Memminger High School for Girls in Charleston and St. Mary's College in Alexandria, Va. She was a charter member of Pine Level United Methodist Church.
Suzette taught mentally and physically-challenged students in Johnston County for 21 years, serving Pine Level, Meadow and Selma Elementary Schools. She was active in civic and community organizations throughout her life and served as president of the Pine Level PTA, the Pine Level Woman's Club, the Lulian Book Club and the United Methodist Women. She was an active supporter of the Johnston County Arts Council and the Johnston Association for Retarded Citizens. She was a member of the board of directors of Johnston Group Homes.
A talented painter and designer, Suzette was known for her award-winning creations which were featured in state-wide exhibitions, magazines and newspapers. She will be remembered, too, for her writing skills and the witty poems she composed to celebrate special events in the lives of family and friends.
Suzette is survived by her husband, Alton G. Fitzgerald of Pine Level; two daughters, Jeri Fitzgerald Board of Laurinburg, Evelyn Fitzgerald Schillmoller of Wilmington; two sons, A. Duncan Fitzgerald of Panacea, Fla., Thomas C. Fitzgerald of Selma; one sister, Lillian Grimes Strickler of Vienna, Va.; two brothers, Thomas W. Grimes of Arlington, Va., Whitford D. Grimes of Jasper, Ga.; seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday, 7-9 p.m. at Parrish Funeral Home, Highway 301 South, Selma. A memorial service to celebrate her life will beheld Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Pine Level United Methodist Church. Prior to the service, Suzette will be buried in a private ceremony at Oakland Heights Cemetery in Smithfield.
In lieu of flowers, Suzette requested that donations be made to the Johnston County Association for Retarded Citizens and/or the Pine Level Woman's Club Scholarship Fund.

I. LEON SHAPIRO
RALEIGH - Leon Shapiro, 68, died Friday, March 5, 1999.
Surviving: wife, Deborah; son, Barry and his wife, Lisa; sister, Helen of New York City, N.Y.
The funeral was held in Plainview Long Island, N.Y.
The family will receive friends from March 9, through March 14, 1999.
