JOYCE C. KISER (MRS. MOSE, JR.)
GREENSBORO - Joyce Ann Carpenter Kiser died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at her residence. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 15, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 North Holden Road, Greensboro, NC.
She was a native of Raleigh and the daughter of Neil Taylor and Patrick A. Carpenter. She was born on May 4, 1934 and had lived in Greensboro since 1957, with the exception of two years,when she and her husband and sons, lived in Spartanburg, SC.
She was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church where she has served as a youth Sunday School teacher, youth counselor, member of Women Society (former circle president), choir member (former president), member of the Official Board (former secretary), Trustee (former secretary).
She was a 1952 graduate of Needham Broughton High School, Raleigh, and the next year attended Womans College (UNC-G). She had been involved in a number of activities at the University including Chair of the Annual Giving Drive, member of the Musical Arts Guild, Spartan Club and currently the Excellence Foundation.
The Greensboro Symphony Guild and Symphony Orchestra captured much of her attention and love over the last 30 years. She has been active in the Guild since 1968 and has served on numerous committees and in leadership positions. These include: President of the Guild, Chairman of the Presentation Ball, Symphonette, Womans Chorus, Special Events, Long Range, Nominations/Awards committees. In 1995, she was the recipient of the Barbara Cone Award for distinguished community service in the advancement of music and leadership in church, preservation, educational and literary circles.
After being on the Board of Directors of the Symphony Orchestra for a number of years she was elected President for a two year term in 1997. At the end of the 1997 and 1998 season; termed by many, as the most successful in its history; she resigned due to sickness. She received special recognition from the Symphony Board of Directors when they dedicated the '98-'99, 40th Anniversary Season, to her. The dedication read "For her steadfast leadership, positive outlook, and unfaltering graciousness which have been an inspiration to all who meet her. As president of the Symphony, she was committed to audience growth, a balanced budget, success through cooperation, and a deep love for the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. It is with love and respect that we dedicate this 40th Anniversary of the Greensboro Symphony to her." She also served on the Symphony Endowment Committee.
Mrs. Kiser was involved in many other community and civic activities which included: past president of the Grinsley PTA, Greensboro Preservation Society Board and Chair of the Blandwood Ball, Board Secretary of the Greensboro Opera Companions, Vice President of the Historical Book Club of North Carolina, member of the N.C. Museum Associates, Area Co-ordinator of the Cancer Crusade, Board of Directors Music for A Great Space, Inc., President of the Woman's Golf Association of the Greensboro Country Club and President of the Bonne Terre Garden Club.
She was employed by the law firm of Mordici, Mills and Parker of Raleigh and Burlington Industries in Greensboro.
She is survived by her husband of 43 year, Mose Kiser, Jr.; sons, Mose Kiser, III and his wife Jean, Patrick Stewart Kiser of Greensboro and his fiancee Lilia Korol of Chisinau, Moldova; sister, Barbara O'Neal and her husband Jack of Raleigh; granddaughters Taylor Forbes Kiser and Margaret Stewart Kiser of Greensboro; nephew David Bryan of Garner and niece Kathey Saieed of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends at Forbis and Dick, North Elm Street Chapel from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greensboro Symphony Endowment Fund, 2102A North Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27408 Attn: Jeanette Allen, Hospice at Greensboro or to a charity of the donor's choice.

OLLIE I. LAWSON
FOUR OAKS - Mrs. Ollie I. Lawson, 73, of 171 Charlie Road, Four Oaks, died at Duke University Medical Center on Saturday evening.
Mrs. Lawson was born in Johnston County on April 24, 1925 to the late James and Martha Allen Moore. Her funeral has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 17, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Minshew Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Barbours Chapel Church Cemetery.
Surviving: sons, Roger Dale Lawson of Durham, Howard Leroy Lawson Jr. of Selma; stepdaughters, Anne Brown and Gwen Atkins, both of Virginia; stepson, Billy Ray Rigsbee of Durham; sister, Lillie Bennett of Durham.; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Minshew Funeral Home, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

DR. JOHN T. LLEWELLYN JR.
WILLIAMSTON - Dr. John Thomas Llewellyn, Jr., 86, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Funeral service Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church; burial, Woodlawn Cemetery.
Dr. Llewellyn was a graduate of Hampton-Sydney College and Medical College of Virginia. He was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Past president of Williamston Kiwanis Club, Past president of Roanoke County Club; member of the American Medical Association; one of the original founding doctors of Martin General Hospital. Dr. Llewellyn practiced medicine for 44 1/2 years and was a Captain in the Medical Corp during World War II.
On December 28, 1945, he married Marion Pender Llewellyn who survives. Other survivors are son; John Thomas Llewellyn, III and wife Debbie of Williamston; two nieces and two nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m at Biggs Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 600 School Drive.
Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church, American Diabetes. Association or a charity or choice.

JOHN D. LLOYD
DURHAM - John D. Lloyd, 84, of 4909 Heritage Dr., died Saturday at he Meadowlands in Hillsborough after a five year battle with Alzheimer's. He was the son of the late James Ernest Lloyd and Fetner Jenks Lloyd of Raleigh.
John moved to Durham in 1950 as Manager of Kimbrell's Furniture Store, where he remained until retirement in 1976.
He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the Watkins Sunday School Class. He was also a Deacon and was active in many aspects of the church. John was a member and past President of the Durham Civitan Club.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sally Newton Lloyd; two sons, James C. Lloyd and his wife, Nancy of Raleigh and S. Allen Lloyd and his wife, Brenda of Lumberton; four grandchildren and two sisters, Ida Ford of Raleigh and Mildred Edwards of Georgetown, SC.
The funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Grace Baptist Church, with burial following in Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary one hour prior to the service.
Memorial donations may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 1004 N. Mangum St., Durham, NC 27701. Hall-Wynne is serving the Lloyd family.

JAMES L. MATTHEWS JR.
MULBERRY, FL - James Lloyd Matthews Jr. age 74, died at his home on Saturday, March 13. Mr. Matthews was born in Cary, NC, the son of the late Lloyd and Lovie Matthews. He was a 1942 graduate of Cary High School and served in the Pacific with the US Navy during World War II. Mr. Matthews resided in Cary most of his life and was employed by Carolina Power and Light for 30 years, before retiring to Florida. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt, a wood craftsman, and a ham radio enthusiast. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebekah Lee Matthews and his sister, Helen Cope, both of Cary.
Survivors include four daughters, Kathryn Adams and husband Sam of New Hill, NC; Sarah White and husband Bill of Concord, NC; Susan Matthews of Cary, NC; and Priscilla Bedford and husband Bob of Raleigh, NC; and three sons, Jim Matthews and wife Pam of Rolesville, NC; Joe Matthews and wife Melody of Raleigh, NC, and Sam Matthews and wife Debbie of Raleigh, NC; the mother and his children, Nancy Matthews of Cary and Long Beach, NC; a sister, Eleanor Jacobs of Cary, NC; a brother, Howard Matthews of Cary, NC; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in Mulberry. Plans for a memorial service in Cary will be announced at a later date.

SANDRA S. PALMER
RALEIGH - Sandra S. Palmer, 64, died on March 12, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital after an unexpected, intense bout of pneumonia. During her illness and death, family and friends surrounded Sandra.
Sandra was very active in her church and community. A survivor of breast cancer, she volunteered at Rex Hospital in the oncology department. She was a member of the Weekly Walkers Club, Elderhostel, Audubon Society, Sierra Club and Saint Francis Book Club and Small Christian Community. Prior to her illness, Sandra had a vital and busy life, with her greatest joy being her family, friends and church community.
Surviving her are five children and their families, including five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Avenue, Raleigh, N.C.
Memorial service will be held at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Leesville Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27613 on Monday, March 15, at 4:30 p.m. The family will be receiving friends at their home after the service.

GEORGE WILLIAM SAUERWEIN JR.
CARY - George W. Sauerwein, Jr. 74, died March 13, 1999.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Cary. The burial will follow at a later date in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville, MD.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made of the Education Scholarship Fund of First Baptist Church, 218 South Academy Street, Cary, NC.

NEIL R. SHELTON
KNIGHTDALE - Neil Ray Shelton, 68, of Knightdale, NC, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Mr. Shelton was born in Cleveland Co., NC on August 11, 1930, the son of the late Ralph W. and Grace Chaffin Shelton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Carol King in 1995.
Mr. Shelton was retired from the NC Department of Motor Vehicles as Division Supervisor with the Driver License Division for over 30 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Sneed Shelton of the home; two daughters, Beth S. Little and husband, Jimmy of Apex, NC and Lisa S. Thompson and husband, Tommy of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Dean Shelton Tillman of Lawndale, NC and Anita Shelton Rubbo of Livonia, MI; four grandchildren, Dale Bird, Thomas, Morgan, and Stephen Little.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1999 in the First Baptist Church, Cherryville, NC by Rev. Perry Holleman and Rev. George Williams. Interment will follow in the City Memorial Park, Cherryville, NC.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 702 E. Main St., Cherryville, NC 28021, 704-435-6711.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, Inc., 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605 or to the Green Pines Baptist Church, 1498 Hodge Rd., Knightdale, NC 27545.
The family will be at the home of Richard and Dean Tillman, 7464 Hull's Rd., Lawndale, NC.

ROMAN H. "BUDDY" WILLIAMS
GREENVILLE - Mr. Roman H. "Buddy" Williams, 74, died Sunday, March 14, 1999 at his home.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
Surviving: wife, Nettie Vandiford Williams; two sons, Andy Williams and Aaron Williams, both of Greenville; two daughters, Phyllis Williams Towliat of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Mary "Susie" Williams Chiaravanond of Greenville; two sisters, Juanita Boyd and Betty Lou Williams, both of Ayden; five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home, 7-9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home of Nettie V. Williams, 2614 Tryon Drive, Greenville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 3015 S. Memorial Drive, Suite A, Greenville, N.C. 27834 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 377, Greenville, N.C. 27835.

HUGH MCCLUER WITT, JR.
GREENSBORO - Hugh McCluer Witt, Jr., 68, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the Forbis & Dick N. Elm Street Chapel.
Mr. Witt, a native of Richmond, VA, was the son of the late Hugh McCluer and Aline Parker Witt, Sr. He served in the U.S. Army, and worked as an insurance agent for forty-five years.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, of the home; son, Hugh M. Witt, III, of Greensboro; three grandsons.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

JOHN WILLIAM JONES "PaPa"
RALEIGH - John William Jones, 78, of 6132 Rock Service Station Road, died Friday, April 2, 1999 after an extended period of declining health.
Mr. Jones was born in Wake County, December 21, 1920, the son of the late Herbert Jones and Dora Blalock Jones.
A retired farmer and carpenter, Mr. Jones was also a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was predeceased in death by his wife of 40 years, Catherleen Penny Jones.
Surviving: daughters, Kay J. Murphy and husband, Jim of Youngsville and Wendy J. Cottle of Clayton; sons, John R. "Ronald" Jones and wife, June of Raleigh, Herbert "Don" Jones and wife, Nancy of Garner, and Jerry L. Jones and wife, Kikuko of Goldsboro; sister, Christine J. Davis of Garner; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner and other times at the home of his son, Don, 116 Chillingham Road, Garner.
A private funeral service will be held Monday.

ELLA "RAMONA" ALFORD
RALEIGH - Ramona Alford, 65, of 336 Meredith Street, died April 1, 1999.
Mrs. Alford was born in Tarboro, to the William Linwood and Ida Tolston Coker.
Funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday in the Montlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.
The family will greet friends Sunday from 12 noon-2 p.m. at the home of Faye Batts, 376 Wilmont Dr.
Surviving are her husband, Robert W. Alford; two sons, Robert Alford Jr. of Greenville, SC, and Richard Alford, of Garner; granddaughter, Debbie Alford and grandson, Glenn Alford, both of Greenville, SC; two sisters and two brothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Dr., Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27609.
