MARY RAE ALTHERR
CARY - Mary Rae Altherr, 69, of Cary, died Friday, April 2, 1999.
A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Cary. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Altherr; sons, Andrew M. Altherr of Cary, and Dr. Edward R. Altherr of Cary; daughters, Paula R. Altherr of Fuquay-Varina, Polly A. Helms of Roanoke, Va, and Jennifer L. Altherr of Raleigh; brother, Dr. Harry J. Smith of Lake Crystal, MN; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary.

BERNICE M. BALLARD
WADESBORO - Mrs. Bernice Maxwell Ballard, 90, died Friday, April 2, 1999 in Heritage Hills Nursing Home.
She was born in Hoke County June 14, 1908, a daughter of the late Martin and Mary Ray Maxwell.
Mrs. Ballard was a member of First Baptist Church, Wadesboro and was retired from The Lady Mary Company in Rockingham. Her husband, Curtis Fisher Ballard preceded her death September 15, 1998.
Funeral service for Mrs. Ballard will be Monday, April 5, 1999 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home, with Dr. Fred Senter officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Monday.
Mrs. Ballard is survived by her daughters; Mrs. Joyce Gilmore of Stanley, N.C.; Mrs. Nancy Flippin of China Grove, N.C. and Mrs. Jane Rushing of Mt. Gilead, N.C.; her brother, Raymond Maxwell of Raeford, N.C.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 423, Wadesboro, N.C. 28170.Arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.

ADDIE H. BROWN
HIGH POINT - Mrs. Addie Hutson Brown, 93, of Evergreens Nursing Center, formerly of 309 Kennedy Street, died Tuesday March 30, 1999 in the Evergreens Nursing Home.
She was born December 23, 1905 in Randolph County , a daughter of Ollie and Deccie Allen Hutson. Mrs. Brown had been a resident of High Point since 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church. On August 7, 1926 she married Lawrence C. Brown. He died December 12, 1988.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Worth Hutson.
Surviving are: on daughter, Mrs. Carleene Kearns and husband Gilbert of 1614 Merrimon Place; two sons, Carl H. Brown and wife Frances of 1011 Creekside Drive, Lawrence C. Brown Jr. and wife Fan of Morehead City; seven grandchildren, Garry Kearns, Karen Adams, Kathy Ridenhour, Terri Brown, Sandy Stiles, Dana Bierma and Jeff Brown; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sechrest Chapel by Rev. Robert Huffman and Rev. Howard Allred and Rev. Roy L. Gant.
Visitation will be Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Home on Lexington Avenue.
Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church 512 North Main Street, High Point, N.C. 27260.

JONES M. CANNADY JR.
FRANKLINTON - Jones M. Cannady, Jr., 74, of 2887 West River Road died Saturday at Wake Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Perry's Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Louisburg.
Mr. Cannady was born January 27, 1925 in Chattanooga, Tenn., the eldest son of Jones M. Cannady, Sr. whom is still survived and the late Tempie Mitchiner Cannady. He was a retired school bus mechanic with Franklin County Public Schools, and a farmer. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, and his great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy Layton Cannady.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law Pattie C. and Edward A. Harris of Wake Forest; a son and daughter-in-law Mark Macon and Dana B. Cannady of Youngsville; brothers, Clyde Cannady of Raleigh, Nat Cannady of Franklinton, Reuben Cannady of Youngsville and Fes Cannady of Aurora, Colorado; sisters, Bettie Wheless of North Wilksboro, and Ann Ijames of Franklinton. Also are his four beloved grandchildren, Shannon and Susan Harris, and Kayla and Macon Cannady.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, 3900 Barrett Drive Suite 306, Raleigh, NC 27609, or to Perry's Chapel Baptist Church, 854 Perry's Chapel Road, Franklinton, NC 27525.

OLA VERGIL HARRELL
DUDLEY - Ola Vergil Harrell, 74, of 106 Sleepy Creek Dr., died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. He graduated from Hobgood High School, B.S. Degree from Wake Forest and MA Degree from East Carolina. He was a teacher, principal in North Carolina Schools and director of Special Federal Educational Programs in Colleges in Florida.
The family requests no flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

MARY S. HILL
JAMESTOWN - Mrs. Mary Susan Sugg Hill, 62, of 303 Valleybrook, died, April 2, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born October 2, 1936, in Gastonia, the daughter of Arthur Vance and Mary Morris Sugg. She was a graduate of Campbell College and had been a resident of the Jamestown and High Point area for thirty five years. She retired from the High Point City School System in 1989 and was a charter member of Peace Christian Church. On March 17,1968 she married Clyde Sherman Hill who preceded her in death in 1974.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Daren "Susanne" Nunn of 801 Bales Chapel Road, and Mrs. Mary Martin Hill Foye of 3132 of Dillon Road,; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Johnson of Elizabethtown and Mrs. Martha Fleming of Benson and four grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Peace Christian Church by Rev. Dan Roberts and Rev. Clemuel Johnson. Burial will be at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home on East Lexington Avenue until placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral Home.

GRACE CUNNINGHAM HORTON
DURHAM - Mrs. Grace Cunningham Horton, 70, of Durham died Monday, March 29, 1999, at her home. Born in Passaic, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Mabel Cunningham. She had been a resident of Durham for 49 years.She was predeceased by her husband Grover Horton. Mrs. Horton was a graduate of Albright College and Duke University. She was an Emeritus professor of Physical Therapy at Duke University. During her forty years in Physical Therapy, she shaped the careers of many students.
Mrs. Horton is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Mae Horton, of Augusta, GA; and two sisters, Elsie Cunningham of Pittsboro and Alice Wildes of Tuxedo.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Duke Chapel in the Chancel (Choir). Dr. James Travis and Rev. Ralph E. Macy will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Horton's name to the Graduate Program in Physical Therapy, Box 3965, DUMC, Durham, NC 27710. The family will receive friends at the home of Grace Horton following the service.

JOHN W. PURVIS JR.
ROCKY MOUNT - John William Purvis Jr., 76, died Friday, April 2, 1999. He was born November 21, 1922, the son of the late John William Purvis Sr. and Martha Swanson. Mr. Purvis was a Life Insurance Agent with Connecticut Mutual Insurance Company for 45 years.
He is survived by his wife Mary Slade Purvis of the home; one son, John William Purvis, III of Middletown, RI; one daughter, Katherine Purvis Wilder and husband Larry Wilder of Rocky Mount, NC; one brother, William T. Purvis of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Kaitlin Wilder and Matthew Wilder.
Memorial service will be held 12 p.m. Monday, April 5, 1999 at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Janice Melbourne Chalaron. All arrangements by Bowling Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Thomson Children's Home, P.O. Box 25129, Charlotte, NC 28229-5129 or Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Rocky Mount, NC.

JOHN W. PURVIS JR.

MORTON FORREST ROBERTS
YOUNGSVILLE - Morton Forrest Roberts Sr., 75, of 4078 Hugh Davis Road, died Saturday, at the VA Hospital in Durham.
He had retired from Benson Aircraft after 25 years of service, and was a lifetime member of AMVETS, and the Disabled American Veterans.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
Surviving is his wife, Elizabeth H. Roberts; stepsons, Donald Holliday, Walter Holliday and Douglas Holliday, all of Youngsville, Wayne Holliday of Davidson, Henry Holliday of Augusta, Ga., and Buddy Holliday of New Bern; a sister, Carolyn Gomez of San Francisco, CA.; 16 step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Franklin County, 1937 NC HWY 39N, Louisburg, NC 27549.

ALPHA S. UPCHURCH SEARS.
COATS - Mrs. Alpha Stephenson Upchurch Sears, age 92, of Coats died Saturday at Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Coats Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Revs. Jesse Mooney and Ronnie Byrd. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Angier.
Mrs. Sears was born October 19, 1906 in Johnston County to the late Lewis and Cecelia Godwin Stephenson. She was married to the late Ben Upchurch and after his death, in later years, she married the late William Roy Sears. Mrs. Sears was a member of the Coats Baptist Church. She helped operate Upchurch Florist, was an Avon Representative, and a Homemaker.
Survivors include daughters, Catherine Peede of Coats, Thurlean Stancil of Angier, and Peggy Morgan of Collinsville, Alabama; stepdaughter, Helen Norris of Coats; sisters, Rador Pleau of Fayetteville and Callie Strickland of Dunn; 15 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats 7-9 p.m. Sunday and at other times at the home of Catherine and Flemming Peede, 305 W. Stewart St., Coats, NC.

ANTHONY FLOYD "TONY" SELLARS
AUG. 15, 1956 - APR. 1, 1999
Raleigh - Anthony Floyd "Tony" Sellers, 42, of 6421 Malibu Drive, a Retail Specialist with D&H Marketing, died suddenly Thursday.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: wife, Kathy Pearce Sellers; son, Robert Anthony "Bobby" Sellers of the home; parents, Floyd S. and Violet M. Sellers of Raleigh; brother, Michael Sellers of Alpharetta, Ga.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

FABIUS W. SMITH
RALEIGH - Mr. Fabius W. Smith Jr., 89, of 1205 Crosslink Road, died April 1, 1999.
Funeral 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oberlin Baptist Church. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: spouse, Mrs. Julia E. Smith of the home; daughter, Ms. Fabette T.D. Smith of Raleigh; son, Calvin Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Mrs. Mary Cox of Washington, DC; brother, Charles H. Smith of Raleigh; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Whitley of Raleigh, Mrs. Millie Tilman and Mrs. Annie Johnson, both of Columbia, SC, Mrs. Marie Bowen and Mrs. Bernice Reeves, both of Trenton, NJ.
Visitation from 12:30-1 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the funeral service at the church.

RALEIGH - Almerdia Sorrell Smith of 2415 Bedford Avenue, died on Thursday, April, 1999.
Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 5, 1999 at Piney Grove AME Church. Interment, Raleigh National Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-11:30, Monday at the church; other times at 1409 East Jones Street.
She is survived by her sister and brothers, Coisy Rene Rand, Lee "Buck" Ornton Sorrell and Junious N. Sorrell; best friend and cousin, Miss Susie Smith; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; cousins; many other relatives and friends.

CHRISTOPHER S. STRICKLAND
CHAPEL HILL - Christopher Scott Strickland, 29, died Friday, April 2, 1999, in Chapel Hill. The funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Falkland Cemetery.
Scott, a native of Falkland, was a 1988 graduate of Farmville Central High School and was graduated cum laude from Harvard University. He had been a resident of Chapel Hill for the past six years where he was employed by Health Decisions, Inc. He was a member of the United Church of Chapel Hill where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member.
Surviving are his parents, Joan W. and Gene Tripp of Greenville, and Charlie W. and Faye R. Strickland of Snow Hill; a brother, Charlie W. (Chip) Strickland Jr. of Greenville; a sister, Tabatha M. Strickland of Siler City; two step-sisters, Tonya D. Maness and Nichole T. Smith both of Greenville; grandmothers, Rachel Windham of Greenville and Susan Strickland of Macclesfield, and a niece, Brandi Nichole Strickland.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home of Joan and Gene Tripp, 4301 Old River Road, Greenville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Church of Chapel Hill, Youth Program, 205 Wilson Street, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27516.
