ELISE ROSENBLUM LIGHT
DURHAM - Mrs. Elise Rosenblum Light, 63, of Carrboro, died Sunday morning at home after a long illness. Mrs. Light was born in Milwaukee, WI, and raised in Tucson, AZ. She received her BA from the University of Arizona, and her Masters' in Journalism from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She was the first full-time director of the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation, from 1994-98. Mrs. Light was the former marketing director the North Carolina Zoological Park. In 1988, the Elise Light Jewish Library was founded in her honor. She was a member of Judea Reform Synagogue.
Mrs. Light is survived by her husband, Gordon of the home; daughter, Randy Gollub of Cambridge, MA; sons, Jonathon Gellman of Charlotte, and Richard Gellman of Dubuque, LA; grandchildren, Samuel Martin Gollub, Alexi Renee and Eliza Anne Gellman; sister, Jane Kay of San Francisco, CA; brother, Mort Rosenblum of Paris, France.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at Judea Reform Synagogue. Officiating will be Rabbi John Friedman. Burial will be at Judea reform Congregation Cemetery, Jones Ferry Road, Carrboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation or the Elise Light Jewish Library.
Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

HERMAN W. MARSHBURN JR.
CREEDMOOR - Herman W. Marshburn Jr., 62, a resident of 3358 Hampton Road, Raleigh, died Friday, May 21st at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
A native of Onslow County, the son of the late Herman W. Marshburn Sr. and Hazel Marshburn. A mebmer of the Baptist faith and was retired as an accountant with the State of N.C. He also had his custom framing service.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by Rev. Ingimar DeRidder. Burial will be in the Creedmoor Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife; Nancy Clay Marshburn; sister, Pat Sloan of Chinquapin; and three nieces.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday preceding the funeral at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be given to Bullock United Methodist Church, c/o Frances B. Crews, 3000 Highway #15, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522, or to North Raleigh Chapel, 5421 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 29609.

MRS. MILLIE DAVIS MATTHEWS
GARNER - Mrs. Millie Davis Matthews, 68, of Garner, NC, died Saturday, May 22, 1999 in the Laurels of Forest Glenn in Garner, NC.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Mecklenburg Co., NC on November 22, 1930, the daughter of the late Amos and Estelle Talton Davis.
Surviving are her husband, Larry Matthews of Clayton, NC; one son, Paul Difusco Jr. of Merrick, NY; one daughter, Debbie Shormick of East Windsor, NJ; three grandchildren; aunt, Mary E. Houle of Sebring, FL; cousin, Audrey Hickman of Garner, NC.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999 in Montlawn Memorial Park by Rev. Eddie Franks.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening at the residence of Mrs. Audrey Hickman, 7433 White Oak Rd., Garner, NC.

RUBEN M. "BILL" MORGAN
GARNER - Ruben "Bill" Morris Morgan, son of the late John and Nora Morgan, departed this life on May 21, 1999 at Rex Hospital after a prolonged illness. He leaves to cherish his memories; his wife, Kathy Morgan and six children, Anthony Davis of New York, Joseph Morgan and Ruben Morgan Jr. of Raleigh, Jennifer Morgan, Brittany Morgan and Nathaniel Morgan of Garner; two brothers, Justus Morgan of Wise, N.C. and John Morgan Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Nora Long of Arlington, Va., Ruby Morgan and Betty Morgan of Washington, D.C.
Ruben touched the lives of many friends and family. Words could never express how deeply he will be missed.
The family will receive visitors at William Toney's Funeral Home, Spring Hope on Tuesday, May 25th from 7-8 p.m.
Funeral Wednesday, May 26 at 2 p.m. Spaulding Family Resource Center Auditorium, Spring Hope.

HUBERT L. POWELL SR.
RALEIGH - Deacon Hubert L. Powell Sr., 78, of 2512 Remington Road departed this life on Wednesday. Funeral 12 noon Tuesday, Abundant Life Christian Center Church of God in Christ. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Deacon Powell was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica but spent most of his adult life in Connecticut before relocating to Raleigh. As a staunch member of Abundant Life and a committed Christian, Deacon Powell was also a Sunday School Superintendant. He was a blessing to everyone whose life he touched.
Surviving: wife, Edith J. Powell of the home; daughters, Isolyn Bailey of Garner, Evelyn Ransom of Brooklyn, NY, Shirleen Hodge of Windsor, CT, and Donna Powell of Richmond, VA; sons, Rev. Hubert L. Powell Jr. of Windsor, CT, Rev. Stenneth Powell Sr. of Raleigh, Cecil Powell of Orlando, FL, and Ivan Powell of Middleton, CT; sister, Melita Green of Jamaica; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, a childhood friend, Deacon Simeon Poyser of Hartford, CT, and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 12 noon. All other times at the home.

BETSY S. SOUTHERLAND
RALEIGH - Betsy Shearin Southerland, 92, of 186 Tollie Weldon Road, Henderson, in Epsom community, died Sunday May 23, 1999, at her home.
A native of Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Louis Frank and Rebecca Hux Shearin. She was the widow of Walter L. Hinton and Wilson S. Southerland.
Mrs. Southerland was a homemaker. She was a member of North Henderson Baptist Church and the Bettie Davis Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at 2 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jack Edge. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Helen H. Rooker, of Norlina, and Betty H. Goodson, and husband, James Thomas Goodson, of Henderson; a son, Louis L. Hinton, and wife, Recca of Raleigh; sister, Lila S. Jackson, of Henderson; eight grandchildren, Stewart E. Rooker, John T. Rooker, Patricia R. Freeman, Walter V. Hinton, David L. Hinton, Lou Ann H. Kitchell, Sarah C. Hinton, and James H. Goodson; ten great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home, in Henderson. All other times, they will be at the home of Thomas and Betty Goodson, 186 Tollie Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons, Stewart E. Rooker, John T. Rooker, Walter V. Hinton, David L. Hinton, James H. Goodson, Kevin S. Rooker, Jonathan E. Rooker, and Timothy C. White.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, 1125 N. Garrett Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

THOMAS W. THOMAS
GREENVILLE - Mr. Thomas W. Thomas, 41, died Sunday, May 23, 1999. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Thomas was a native and life long resident of Greenville. He was a farmer and co-owner of Thomas Mobile Home Sales and Mobile Home Parks.
Surviving: son, Kyle Thomas of Greenville; daughter, Lane Thomas of Greenville; parents, Alton Ray and Frances Crawford Thomas of Greenville; sister, Carolyn Thomas of Greenville; brothers, Bobby Thomas and David Thomas, both of Greenville.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home of Carolyn Thomas, 661 Roosevelt Spain Road, Greenville.

WILLIE E. WELLS
RALEIGH - WILLIE "Bill" Eugene. Wells, age 73, a former salesman with Caraleigh Furniture Store in Raleigh, died Sunday, May 23, 1999. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sugg Funeral Chapel in Fuquay Varina. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens .
Surviving: wife, Juanita Sauls Wells; daughters, Donna Wells Harris of Cary; Janice Wells Pearce of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Shelby Nicole Pullen, Amber Anita Pearce, Austin Dillon Pearce, Dustin David Pearce; sisters, Margaret Wells Williams, Betty Jean Hancock of Fuquay Varina, Mavis Wells Weeks of Durham; brother, Bobby Lee Wells of Angier.
The family will receive friends today at 7-9 p.m. at Sugg Funeral Home in Fuquay Varina.

LETHA RIDER ALVERSON
ZEBULON - Letha Rider Alverson, 83, of Wellington Nursing Center, died Wednesday at Wake Medical Center.
A service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, July 9, in the chapel mausoleum of Gethsemane Memorial Gardens with Rev. Stephen Prevatte officiating.
Surviving are her son, Johnnie W. Alverson Jr. of Louisburg; daughter, Naomi Johnson of Zebulon; sisters, Ruth Jennings of Knoxville, Tn. and Faye Moore of Waynesville; two grandchildren, Trinity Grasty of Zebulon and Wesley Alverson of Henderson.

JANE L. AMAN
RALEIGH - Sarah Jane Lancaster Aman, 70, died Monday. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rose Conner officiating. Burial, Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Beth Pagan of Anderson, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Anita A. and Henry White of Garner, Sara A. and Jeff Graham of Garner; brother, J. Troy Lancaster of Raleigh; sisters, Louise L. Hicks of La Mirada, Calif., Alice L. McKenzie of Laurinburg; grandchildren, John and Trish Pagan of Anderson, S.C., Josh and Andrea Pagan of Apex, Julie Christine Bright of Garner, John C. Bright of Garner, Katie Lynn Bright of Garner, Nathan Kyle Graham of Garner.
The family will receive friends Thursday, one hour prior to the funeral at McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton.

MRS. HELEN PASKUS CHAPPELL
RALEIGH - Mrs. Helen Paskus Chappell, 88, of Raleigh, died Wednesday at Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Chappell had been a resident of Raleigh for the past 30 years moving to Raleigh from Lakewood, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Q. Wasson who died in 1961 and Leslie Chappell who died in 1985. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her son, Robert J. Wasson and his wife, Julia Cardona Mack of Raleigh; a sister, Miss Grasilda Paskus of Raleigh; three step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, July 9, 1999 from 4-6 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street.
Graveside inurnment rites will be held at a later date in Logan, Ohio.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.

MAYOLA G. GUNTER
APEX - Mayola Gunter born 12-21-1926 - deceased 07-06-99 in Newark, New Jersey. She was formally of Apex, North Carolina.
She was the daughter of the late Samatha Gunter.
She is survived by H. Ludeal Marlin, Doris Jean Harris and a brother, David Gunter, all from New Jersey. Ella Mae Scott, twin sister, Viola G. Smith and brother, Paul A. Gunter, all of Apex. The late Mary Lee McDonald of Durham; one son, the late Rufus Gunter and a host of nieces, nephews, relative and friends.
We love you and you will be greatly missed.

CHARLIE WAYNE "CHIP" HUTCHINS
DURHAM - Charlie Wayne "Chip" Hutchins, 44, of 703 Lynn Road, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, in the Duke Medical center following a brief illness.
Chip was a native of Durham and a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Wayne Powell Hutchins and Mrs. Valencia Lopez Hutchins. He was a graduate of Southern High School and operated the B&W Construction Company. He was also the owner of the Whispering Pines Trailer Park. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the Durham Masonic Lodge 352. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Raleigh Scottish Rite Bodies and was a member of the Amaran Temple.
Surviving are his wife, Sherry Bangle Hutchins; two sons, Jonathan Tyler Hutchins and Charlie Garrett Hutchins, both of the home; his mother, Valencia Lopez Hutchins of Durham; his grandmother, Emma Garrett Hutchins Daniel of Durham; one sister, Gail Hutchins Clark and husband, Mark of Durham; nieces and nephews, Kara Allison Clark and Mark Powell Clark, both of Durham, Jennifer Louise Yandle of Matthews, Rachel Ellen Bangle and John Allen Bangle, both of Albemarle.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Robert Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be members of the Durham Masonic Lodge #352.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Fowler, Ronnie High, Tommy Rigsbee, and Max Boswell and employees of the B&W Construction Company including Billy Evans, Howard Duncan, Ralph Turrentine Jr., and Randy Brantley.
Visitation will be tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the Hudson Funeral Home and at other times at his home.
Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 1204 Lynn Road, Durham, NC 27703.

WALTER LEE "NOODY" JOHNSON
LUMBERTON - Mr. Walter Lee "Noody" Johnson, 72, of 393 Bee Gee Road, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.
He was born July 4, 1927 in Robeson County to the late Ira and Opal Watson Johnson.
Mr. Johnson made many outstanding achievements in work, Boy Scouts, Jaycees, The Robeson Baptist Association, and Church Youth Group. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught inspirational lessons in Sunday School.
He ran a Chevrolet Dealership for 45 years before his retirement.
Memorial services will be Friday, July 9, 1999 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Bounds and Rev. Steve Branch officiating.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Pait Johnson of the home; two daughters, Vicki Johnson Barnes of Nags Head and Kitty Johnson Britt of McDonald; one brother, James Johnson of Rowland; three grandchildren, Brooke and Walt Britt of McDonald, and Katie Jordan of Nags Head.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-9 at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc. in Lumberton and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America; First Baptist Church Special Funds, 7th & Walnut Street, Lumberton, N.C. 28358 or to Boys & Girls of Homes of Lake Waccamaw, P.O. Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, N.C. 28450.
