TEMPLE OUTLAW HARDESTY
RALEIGH - Tempie Outlaw Hardesty, 58, of Raleigh died Wed., May 26, 1999, at Rex Hospital.
She was a preschool teacher at Raleigh Preschool and Hayes Barton United Methodist Church Preschool. She was dedicated to her family, friends and students and impacted over a thousand children during her teaching career.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Edwin Stock officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the service.
She is survived by her husband, Ivan Hardesty, Jr., of Raleigh; parents, Dot and Tom Outlaw of Raleigh; two sons, Steve Hardesty and Scott Hardesty, both of Raleigh; and a brother, Tom Outlaw, Jr., of Asheville.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Tempie Hardesty Memorial Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 111 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, NC 27601. These funds will be used toward the construction of a preschool area at the church.
Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.

JOHN ROBERT HOWELL
RALEIGH - John Robert Howell, 60, of 2040 Carroll Drive, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Rex Hospital after a six-year courageous battle with cancer. Bob Howell was a salesman for Toner Solutions, an avid golfer and had shot a hole in one at Raleigh Country Club in the past. He was a graduate of Broughton High School and had served a tour of duty in Germany in the Air Force.
Surviving: daughters, Bobbie Joe Turner of Clayton, Jenny Kirk Alphin of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Krissy, Billy, Ashley, Rachael Ann; sister, Frances Brewer of Raleigh; brother,Gordon Howell of Whispering Pines, Andrew Howell, Jr. of Street, Maryland.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Howell, Sr. and Tillie Stock Howell and his sister, Teddie H. Long.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999 at the home of Bobbie Joe and Rudy Turner, 918 Mulberry Road, Clayton, NC 27520, with the memorial service to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Howell family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the loving care given to their loved one by Hospice and the Rex Cancer Center.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, Inc., 1300 St. Mary's Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

VIVIAN SULLIVAN MILLER
RALEIGH - Vivian Sullivan Miller, 68, of Raleigh, went to be with the Lord May 26, 1999 after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Gladly choosing a career of homemaker when she and Jr. were married, she will always be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife and mother, as well as a kind and caring sister and friend.
she was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Surviving is her husband of 49 years, Jr. Miller; daughters, Cindy Buxton of Charlotte, Tanya Register of Apex, Janet Rhudy of Garner; son, TIm Miller of Kings Mountains; and sister, Mildred "Millie" Nicothodes of Mesa, Arizona. Also seven grandchildren, Bo and Laura Buxton, Joshua Register, Daniel and Matthew Rhudy, Rebekah and Kathlene Miller; one great-grandson, Robby Rhudy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dora and Arthur Sullivan and her brother, Arthur Jr.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, on Thursday, May 27, from 7-8:30 p.m.
Memorial service at Forest Hills Baptist Church (Chapel), 1 p.m. Friday, May 28.
Contributions may be made in Vivian's name to Forest Hills Baptist Church.

CARRIE J. PUCKETT
KINSTON - Carrie Jones Puckett, 80, of 1256 Highway 258, North, died Tuesday at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Lenoir County to the late Johnnie and Mary Shivar Jones.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnnie Manley Jones and James Edward "Skeety" Jones.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Kinston and the Carrie Mae Marston Sunday school class.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home, with Dr. Aubrey Jones and Ray Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Puckett; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Bob Jacobs of Raleigh; son, Paul Nelson Puckett Sr. of Seven Springs; sisters, Fannie Rouse of Seven Springs and Annie Hinson of Kinston; brother Ben Jones of Seven Springs; four grandchildren, Amy Bullard of Raleigh, Ryan Bullard of Greenville, Heidi Weeks of Kinston and Paul Nelson Puckett Jr. of Kinston; one great-grandchild, Jared Reid.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the home.
Arrangements are being handled by Rouse Funeral Home, LaGrange.

CHRISTINE B. BAGWELL
RALEIGH - Mrs. Christine B. Bagwell, 76, of Raleigh, NC, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Bagwell was born in Harnett Co., NC on June 19, 1922, the daughter of the late Joe Cephus and Callie Jackson Barbour. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis D. Bagwell.
She was a long time member of the Temple Baptist Church. She and her late husband, Louis D. Bagwell owned and operated Bagwell Plumbing in Raleigh for many years. She retired as an auditor with the State Board of Education.
Surviving are her beloved and devoted daughter, Donna Bagwell of Raleigh, NC; brother, Edward Barbour and wife, Tabatha of Atlantic Beach, NC; sister, Nellie Stephens of Portsmouth, VA; close friend and sister-in-law, Agnes Barbour of Raleigh, NC; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home St. Mary's St. Chapel by Dr. Charles Johnson. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Dr., Raleigh, NC 27609 or to the American Lung Association, 800 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

PHILIP HENRY ELLINGTON
RALEIGH - A service of celebration for Mr. Phillip Henry Ellington will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 27th at Our Savior Lutheran Church on the corner of Aycock Street and Glenwood Avenue. The family will be gathering at his daughter's home.
Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 708, Charlotte, N.C. 28210.

MARJORIE LOU "DOLL" HODGES
APEX - Marjorie Lou "Doll" Hodges, 75, of 163 Turtle Creek Farm Rd., Apex, died at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, May 24, 1999 due to an extended illness.
She was a native of Iaeger, West Virginia, a retired school teacher, serving in Altavista, Va., and a former resident of Burlington.A memorial funeral service will be held Friday, May 28, at 11 a.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 W. Williams St., (Hwy. 55) Apex.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 28, from 10:00 a.m. prior to the service and immediately following the service. Officiating will be the Rev. Karen Whitaker.
Survivors are: son, John Hodges and wife, Carol of Apex; two grandchildren, Spencer and Pepper Hodges of the home; sister, Jeanne Davis Haynes and husband, Gill of Pasadena, MD; a brother, Jimmy Elkins Davis and wife, Peggy of Clearwater, Fla.
Arrangements are entrusted with Apex Funeral Home.

GREGORY JUDE JOHNSON
RALEIGH - Attorney Gregory Jude Johnson of Alexandria, Virginia died on May 24, 1999, in a local hospital. Attorney Johnson was the youngest son of the late Dr. W.W. Johnson and Mrs. Carolyn N. Johnson.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 1999 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Washington, DC.
Arrangements are by Green's Funeral Home, Alexandria, VA.
Local arrangements are by Haywood Funeral Home, Inc.
A Celebration of the Life of Gregory will be held in Raleigh, NC at a later date.

RUTH DICKERSON MEADE
RALEIGH - Mrs. Ruth Dickerson Meade, of Raleigh, died at Rex Hospital on Tuesday, May 25, 1999, after a courageous battle of cancer. Mrs. Meade was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Raleigh, where in past years she had served as a Sunday School teacher in the children's department and a member of the adult choir. The service to the witness of the Resurrection will be held at St. James United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 27, 1999, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.
Mrs. Meade is survived by one son, Samuel A. Meade of Raleigh; one sister, Elizabeth D. Fuller of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Sylvester Allen Meade.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Health Care Foundation, Rex Cancer Center, 2500 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 316, Raleigh, NC, 27607.

JOAN A. MOSS
CLAYTON - Joan A. Moss, founder of the Message Center in Clayton, NC, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999 at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She is survived by two sisters, Cheryl M. Matzkvech of Goldsboro and Bobbie M. Partenza of the home; three nieces; two nephews; two grand nieces; and one grand nephew.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday, May 28, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m at the home at 2101 Englewood Dr., Clayton, NC.

HENRY BENJAMIN MURRAY
RALEIGH - Henry Benjamin Murray, 48, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999. Mr. Murray was born in Wake County and was a water meter mechanic for the City of Raleigh. He was a member of the Salvation Army Church.
Surviving are his brother, Otho Murray of Georgia; sisters, Peggy Gilliam of Apex and Brenda Perry of Raleigh; five nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday in Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may visit 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street.

JOHN S. PATRICK, SR
ALCOA, TN - John Shepherd Patrick, Sr, 81 of Alcoa, Tennessee died at 12:45 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, 1999. Born in Wake County, (Cary), North Carolina. In his early years, Mr. Patrick lived and worked in Apex and Cary and in Johnston County, N.C., and then moved to East Tennessee during the residential construction of the Manhattan Project. Served in the United States Marine Corps, First Separate Engineers in the Pacific and Asian arena during World War II. After the war, he returned to Maryville, TN., where he was a home builder and contractor for a number of years. For the past many years, Mr. Patrick and his son, have farmed in the Blount, Monroe and McMinn Counties of East Tennessee.
Preceded in death by: Wife, Velma Clifton Patrick; Parents, Will and Hattie Patrick; Brothers, James and Lee Patrick; Sister, Evelyn Patrick. Survivors include: Son, John S. Patrick, Jr. (Johnny Patrick) of Alcoa; Daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Sam Meacham of Knoxville; granddaughter, Katherine Reed of Knoxville; Brother, Tom and wife Helen Patrick of Chester, VA; Special friends: Anne Gillenwater; and Homer Roberts, all of Maryville, TN; Raymond and Hope Loveday of Friendsville, TN.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 28, 1999, in the Trinity Chapel, Smith Mortuary, Lamar Alexander Parkway., Maryville, Tennessee. Funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the Trinity Chapel of Smith's Mortuary, with Pastor Scott Knight of Maryville Friends Church officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Grandview Cemetery for interment.

FRED L. SYKES
SEPT. 3 1933 - MAY 25, 1999
CLAYTON - Fred L. Sykes, 65, of 689 Corbett Road, died Tuesday at the VA Medical Center in Durham. He was a retired Master Sergeant, USMC and from Raleigh Housing Authority.
Fred was Past Master of Vandora Lodge #745, Past Patron of Eastern Star, a member of Scottish Rite and Amran Shrine.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel in Garner. Burial with military Honors, Maplewood Cemetery, Clayton.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Sykes; sons, Dewayne and wife Lynn Sykes of Knightdale, Frederick Sykes of Raleigh, Christopher Sykes of Wilmington; daughters, Carolyn and husband David Stafford, Vickie and husband Randy Earp, both of Garner; step-daughters, Denise Pacheco of Clayton and Lisa Gallegos of Selma; sisters, Edith Honeycutt of Willow Spring, Fay Steinbaugh and Loretta Imhoff, both of Baltimore, MD; brothers, Tom Sykes of Clayton and Lowell Sykes of High Point; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a stepson, Frank J. Brager, Jr., a sister, Margaret Abernathy, and a brother, Carrol Sykes.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the Funeral Home.

SYLVIA TEMPLE
BUNNLEVEL - Mrs. Sylvia Temple, 56, died at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dunn on Tuesday, May 25, 1999. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, Bunnlevel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jerome Pope officiating. Entombment, Westview Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: husband, Odis Temple; son, Lanny Temple of Bunnlevel; sister, Priscilla Jackson of Lillington; brother, Joedi Spence of Knightdale, Keifford Spence of Raleigh; grandson, Lanny Dolan-Grey Temple.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Thursday at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home, Lillington other times at the home.
