NELLIE HOLDER WILLIAMS
WILSON - Nellie Holder Williams, 78, of 4761 Ward Blvd., Wilson, NC, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999.
A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Friday, May 28, 1999 at the Norman Screws Chapel of Family Funeral Care, 1201 N. Arendell Ave., Zebulon, NC.
Surviving is a son, Ronnie W. Williams of Bunn; brother, Ernest Holder of Fuquay-Varina; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

HILLIARD BENNETT
RALEIGH - Hilliard Bennett, 80, died December 3, 1998 at Raleigh Community Hospital of complications following surgery for colon cancer. He was born Feb. 19, 1918 in Pittsburgh, Pa., and spent his teens in Franklinville, NY. After graduation, he moved to New York City, where he did freelance artwork, wrote short stories, and met his wife, Lynn, a Juilliard piano student. He joined Burroughs Wellcome in 1941 and worked as Art Director for the Advertising Department until Retirement in 1980. After relocating with Burroughs Wellcome to Raleigh in 1970, he was active in the Toastmasters Club, did showcard signs for Crabtree Valley Mall, assisted his wife's piano recitals, and numerous community projects. Widowed in 1991, he was most recently a member of Sertoma Park Artists, Pullen Dance Club, the Oasis Club, and a piano student at the Raleigh Conservatory.
His writings have been published in Smithsonian's "Railroad History, " "Clavier," "Everywomen" magazines, and locally in the Triangle's "Fifty Plus" newspaper. His handwriting analysis manual, "Discover Graphology," is still sold in local bookstores. But he is best known for his bowties and his smile.
He is survived by his daughter, Sue and Ranvir Bakshi, his grandsons, Neil, UNC-Chapel Hill Student, and Benji, and cousins, Don Kenyon of NY and Ruth Rodwick of Florida.
Memorial service will be held February 20th at 11 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Memorials may be sent to the Raleigh Conservatory of Music, Bennett Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 58792, Raleigh, N.C 27658-8792.

SHIRLEY ANN DIXON
RALEIGH - Shirley Ann Averett Dixon, 46, of 7413 Glendower Road, died Saturday at Rex Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a computer programmer at SAS.
A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road. A graveside service will follow in Enon Baptist Church Cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are her husband, John Dixon; mother, Almeta B. Averett of Oxford; sister, Janet M. Averett of San Jose, Calif.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home, 7-9 p.m. on Sunday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 27624, Raleigh, N.C. 27603 or to the Jimmy V. Foundation for cancer research, 1201 Walnut St., 2nd Floor, Cary, N.C. 27511.

ETHEL B. BATTEN
SELMA - Ethel Brown Batten, 87, died Saturday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Worley Tharse Batten, and her daughters, Hilda Jean Batten and Faye Batten Powell.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church near Kenly. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Glen Batten of Winston-Salem and Alton Batten of Selma; a daughter, Reba Bone of Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma Sunday night from 7-9 p.m.

JENEIL "JILL" B. BONNER
BENSON - Mrs. Jeneil "Jill" Benson Bonner age 70 of 306 E. Harnett St. died Friday at her home after an extended illness. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Elevation United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Benson.
Mrs. Bonner was born November 9, 1928 in Johnston County to the late Jeptha and Florence Hardee Benson. Mrs. Bonner was married to the late John M. Bonner. She was a member of Elevation United Methodist Church and had retired from the retail clothing business.
Surviving include son and daughter-in-law, John R. & Gloria Bonner of Benson; daughter and son-in-law, Meloney B. and Gerry Feldkamp of Cincinnati, OH; brother, Aldis Benson of Benson; four grandchildren, Abby Feldkamp, Jon Feldkamp, Greg Feldkamp, and Stephanie Feldkamp.
Family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

LESTER C. BULLOCK
FUQUAY-VARINA - Lester Charles Bullock, 86, died Friday, February 12, 1999. Funeral 1 p.m. Monday, February 15, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home chapel. Graveside service 4 p.m. Monday at the Rolesville Baptist Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Bullock was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Dean Bullock.
Surviving: daughters, Brenda B. Robertson and husband, Wayne of Rolesville, Etta Gray B. Ballance and husband, Gayle of Columbia, SC, Wanda B. Gilchrist and husband, Larry of Raleigh; grandchildren, Lisa R. Wilson, Sara R. Hagwood, Gwen A. Higgins, Ginny Ballance, Lori Gilchrist, Jeff Gilchrist; great-grandchildren, John Wilson, Jamie Wilson, Greyson Hagwood, Ashley Higgins, Mitchell Higgins; sisters, Mary Smith, Alta Wilson and Agnes Bass, all of Fuquay-Varina, Elva Powell of Concord; brother, Howard Bullock of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service Monday afternoon at the funeral home.

JOSEPH B. CARMICHAEL
BATTLEBORO - Joseph Barton Carmichael, 62, died Saturday, February 13, 1999. He was born July 29, 1936 in Nash County the son of the late Randolph and Carrie Robinson Carmichael. He was an Air Force veteran and a retired executive with the Hardee's Food System. He was a member of the Battleboro United Methodist Church and retired from the Battleboro Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving: wife, Nellie Burgess Carmichael of the home; sons, Joseph B. Carmichael, Jr. and wife Tammy of Raleigh, Anthony "Tony" Carmichael of Battleboro, Todd B. Carmichael of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Corey Carmichael, Brittany Carmichael, Cameron Carmichael; brother, Randy Carmichael of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Docky Bass of Bahama, NC.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue with Rev. Lindy Jones and Rev. Roger Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Battleboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home on Sunset Avenue. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Battleboro United Methodist Church.

WILLIAM JOSEPH CORMACK JR.
RALEIGH - William Joseph Cormack Jr., 80, of Raleigh, died Friday, February 12, 1999 in the Wake Medical Center.
Mr. Cormack was born in Richland County, S.C. on April 13, 1918, the son of the late William J. Cormack Sr. and Rose Melford Cormack.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Bruce Cormack; son, William J. Cormack III of Raleigh; three daughters, Kathy and Teresa Cormack, both of Las Vegas, Nev., Jean C. Bass of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Alice C. Jowers of Columbia, S.C., Nancy M. Cormack of Spartanburg, S.C.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, 1999 in Raleigh Memorial Park by Rev. J.P. Johnson.
The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.

DR. THOMAS M. DANIEL
Aug. 23, 1921-Feb. 12, 1999
SMITHFIELD - Dr. Thomas Manning Daniel, pediatrician, died Friday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: wife, Ruth Pegram; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Larry Osborne of Smithfield, Margaret and Mike Gafford of Merigold, Miss., Linda Daniel of Clayton, Jane and Ken Allen of Smithfield; brother, Louis Daniel of Oxford; sisters, Luellen Scott of Mebane and Martha Rauch of Fort White, Florida; grandchildren, Jennifer Ruth Osborne, Allison Michele Gafford, Stephanie Marie Gafford, Thomas Daniel Allen and Timothy Daniel Allen.
Memorials may be made to "The Building Fund" of the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1159, Smithfield, N.C. 27577.
The family will receive friends at Underwood Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Monday.

JOHN L. ELLINGTON, SR.
DURHAM - John Lawrence Ellington, Sr, 72, of 2608 Banner Street, died Friday, February 12, 1999, in Durham Regional Hospital.
Mr. Ellington was born October 22, 1926, in Durham and had been a resident of Durham most all of his life. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Laif Ellington. He served during Word War II for 22 months in the Pacific aboard the USS Weaver, DE 741 and earned 7 campaign ribbons and 11 battle stars. He was a member of the Lowe's Grove Baptist Church and the Young Men's Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Durham Elks Lodge 568, a Shriner in the Sudan Temple, a member of the Durham Elks Lodge 352 and the VFW. He retired after 35 years with the American Tobacco Company.
He was first married to Hazeline Thomasson and had 2 children, the late Charles Lawrence Ellington and a daughter, Seritha Lynn Garrard of Stockbridge, GA. He was next married to the late Jean Oveton Ellington and has one son, John Lawrence Ellington, II, of the home.
Surviving are his wife, Frances "Sis" Pendergraft Ellington; stepsons, Thomas Roberts of Knightdale and Rodney Roberts, Sr. of Hillsborough; seven grandchildren, Betsy Ellington, Mark and Scott Garrard, Rodney Roberts, Jr., and friend, April Smith, Traci Farmer, Karrick Roberts and Tommy Roberts, II.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the Lowe's Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Forest Gale will officiate. Entombment will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will include Mark Garrard, Scott Garrard, Reid Pendergraft, Matt Pendergraft and Don Pendergraft.

S. RYLAND FARMER
YANCEYVILLE - S. Ryland Farmer, 79, of 1433 Foster Road, Yanceyville, died Friday, February 12, 1999 at the Brian Nursing Center of Yanceyville.
He was born in Danville, VA on July 9, 1919, to the late Samuel Ellis Farmer and Ada Lea Farmer. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lennis F. Mallers.
He received his early education in the Caswell County Public Schools and attended Guilford College and North Carolina State University. He was a faithful member of Prospect United Methodist Church and served as Chairman of the Administrative Board from 1962 to 1991. In 1962 he retired as Chief of Quality Control at Fairchild Hiller Aircraft Cooperation. From 1963 to 1989 he was owner and operator of Caswell Motor Company, Inc.
From 1962 to 1944 he served as Chairman of the Caswell County Planning Board and was instrumental in the construction of the Country Line Creek Watershed Project. In 1983 he was honored by Caswell County by naming the project the S.R. Farmer Lake. He also served as a member of the N.C. Private Industry Council under Governors Hunt and Martin. In 1984 he was named North Carolina Watershed Man of the Year. He was honored with the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments Distinguished Service Award in 1977 and 1983. He also received the 1980 Governor's Volunteer Award, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1984 and the 1992 Capitol Citation Award.
He was a member of the Yanceyville Rotary Club, Caswell County Farm Bureau, N.C. Automobile Dealers Association, National Automobile Dealers Association, Ford Dealer Council, Air Force Association, Peagus Club, Caswell Brotherhood Lodge #11 and Amran Temple Shrine Club. He also served as a local director of Wachovio Bank and Trust Company.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah D. Farmer of the home; son, R. Lee Farmer and wife Elizabeth M. Farmer of Yanceyville; daughter, Sarah F. Hensley and husband Michael Hensley of Salisbury; grandsons, Joshua P. Farmer of Raleigh, Cameron L. Farmer of Winston-Salem, Samuel M. Farmer of Yanceyville; and a brother, Marvin N. Farmer of Blanch, NC.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 15, 1999 at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Ruth. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Bobby W. Brewer, 1154 Hatchett Road, Yanceyville, NC 27379.

JOSEPHINE GEORGE GORHAM
ROCKY MOUNT - Josephine George Gorham, 83, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999. She was born September 15, 1915 in Nash County, daughter of the late Dr. L.R. and Mary Bryan Gorham.
Surviving: cousins, Hattie Bryan Beck of Cary, Archie Futrell of Raleigh, Mary Futrell Page of Chesapeake, VA, Tom Bryan of Roaring Gap, NC, J. Sam Gorham Jr. of Rocky Mount, Henry Gorham Webb of Hilton Head, SC, George A. Hornbeck of Greenville, NC.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Churchill Gorham and Helen Bryan Gorham.
Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Caswell Shaw officiating. Arrangements by Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Nash General, Curtis Ellis Dr., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

CANDACE R. GROCE
SANFORD - Candace Ruth Groce, 82 of 700 West Over Dr. died Friday.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday 11 a.m. at the Jonesboro Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Bob Anderson and Rev. Joe Mann. A private graveside service will be held Monday 10 a.m. at the Jonesboro Cemetery for family members only.
Surviving: sister, Margie Mann of Sanford.
The family will receive friends at the Jonesboro Presbyterian Church following the services.
Miss Mann was born in Lee County preceded in death by her parents David Alton Groce and Leosta Allred Groce.
Memorials may be made to the Jonesboro Presbyterian Church, 2200 Woodland Avenue, Sanford, NC 27330.

VIVIAN S. HALL
FAYETTEVILLE - Vivian Snuggs Hall, of 200 Pate Drive, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999.
Vivian Snuggs Hall, wife of Dr. Daniel K. Hall, was born in Gaffney, S.C. She graduated from Wake Forest University, Campbell University, and attended UNC at Chapel Hill. She taught English and Latin in Goldsboro High School, Massey High School and Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She died at home of a Malignant Brain Tumor. Her body was given to the N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, daughters, Katherine Pugh of Fayetteville, Dr. Jenny Lind Hall of Goldsboro, Sarah Joyce Wolfe of Panama; sons, Dr. Stephen F. Pate of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Kirk Hall of Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Hall Scholarship Fund, Box 53737, Fayetteville, N.C. 28305.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999 at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
