July 8, 1940 - Feb. 13, 1999
GARNER - Roy Hill, 58, of 1024 Fowler Drive, a retired employee of Flavorich, died Saturday at his home.
Funeral service, 11 a.m. Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: wife, Ann Hill; daughter, Danah Hill of Garner; sons, Roy Hill Jr. of Clayton, Kelly Hill of Garner; sister, Frances Bruce of Kinston; brother, Earl Hill of Morrisville; grandchildren, Kayla Rae Hill and Tyler Marshburn.
Visitation, 3-5 today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

ESTELLE WARLICK HILLMAN
DURHAM - Mrs. Estelle Warlick Hillman, 98 died Friday evening. She was the widow of Dr. E.L. Hillman, longtime Methodist minister, a former minister at Trinity United Methodist Church and Durham District Superintendent.
A graduate of Trinity College (now Duke University), she was President of Student Government and active in Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Mrs. Hillman taught French at Davenport College in Lenoir, NC. After her marriage to Dr. Hillman, she devoted her life to the work of the Methodist Church, serving at the local, state, and national levels. She was the first President of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Woman's Society of Christian Service, served as Vice-President of the National Division of the Board of Missions of the Methodist Church, and on the Council of World Service and Finance. She was Chairman of the Personnel Committee for the National Council of Churches and Corresponding Secretary of the National Organization of United Church Women.
She served on the Board of Trustees of seven colleges: Scaritt, Pfeiffer, Bennett, Methodist, Paine, Ewha Women's University in Seoul, Korea, and the Women's Christian Medical College of Shanghai, China.
In Durham, she was on the Durham Human Relations Commission, the Advisory Council on Senior Citizens, the Council of Center-City Missions, Durham Women in Action for the Prevention of Violence, and Durham Congregations in Action. She was a longtime member of The Reviewers' Club.
In 1965 she was one of Durham's Mothers of the Year.
In 1966 Mrs. Hillman received the Honorary Degree of Humane Letters from Ewha University, Seoul, Korea, and was cited by the South Korean government for her active role at Ewha.
Methodist College, Fayetteville, NC, gave her their Medallion in 1980 for outstanding accomplishment in community, church and profession. North Carolina Wesleyan College in May, 1991, conferred on her the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
Graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery by the Reverend David M. Chamberlain.
She was predeceased by a son, E.L. Hillman, Jr., and a grandson, David Hillman. Mrs. Hillman is survived by a daughter Anne Hillman Luper (Mrs. R.E.) of Fayetteville, NC; one sister, Kathryn Warlick McEntire (Mrs. H.G.) of Myrtle Beach, SC; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Carolyn Johnson, Mickey Knight and Elvenia Lawson for their constant loving care to Mrs. Hillman for the past 3 1/2 years. The family also wishes to express their gratitude to the management and staff of Northwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their excellent, Christian care and peaceful surroundings.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions be made to National Citizens' Coalition for Nursing Home Reform, 1424 16th Street, NW, #202, Washington, DC 20036-2211 or Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, Suite 112, Durham, NC 27702.

MILLARD "JOSH" JOHNSON
MAY 29, 1918 - FEB. 12, 1999
GARNER - Millard "Josh" Johnson, 79, of 1223 Poplar Ave., died Friday. He was a World War II veteran, having been mobilized into federal service with the North Carolina National Guard in September, 1940. He served with the 30th Infantry Division, 120th Infantry, Service Company during 5 major battle campaigns in the ETO, including the "Battle of Mortain" and the "Battle of the Bulge". Mr. Johnson was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, and numerous other citations in recognition of his military services.
Mr. Johnson participated in both local and state Golden Gloves Boxing Tournaments during 1937 and 1938. He also boxed in military tournaments while in service. He boxed professionally winning 32 bouts.
Funeral, 2:00 p.m. Monday at Garner Advent Christian Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth I. Johnson; sister, Nita Creech of Willow Spring, Bertha Dunn of Durham, Daisy Guess and Oliphie Holcutt, both of Hillsborough.
Visitation, 7-9 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

KATIE T. LEE
BENSON - Mrs. Katie Tart Lee, age 86, of 8377 NC HWY 50 South, died Friday at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. Funeral mass will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove. Father Bernard E. "Ned" Shlesinger, III will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Benson.
Mrs. Lee was born August 4, 1912, in Johnston County to the late Preston B. and Mary Gregory Tart. She was married to the late J.R. Lee. Mrs. Lee was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Surviving include son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Janet Lee of Benson; daughter, Kaye Lee Cozart of Nashville, TN; sister, Rosalie Smith of Newton Grove; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel, visitation will follow from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Family suggests memorial to be made to Johnston Memorial Home Care and Hospice, 509 N. Brightleaf Blvd, Smithfield, NC 27577 or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Ladies Alter Society, PO Box 100, Newton Grove, NC 28366, or one's favorite charity.

LOLA W. MORROW
HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Lola W. Morrow, 80, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
Funeral service will be conducted Monday morning, February 15, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church in Hillsborough. The service will be conducted by Rev. W.J. Rogers and the burial will follow in the Harvey Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Morrow-Brown of Raleigh, Mrs. Janice Green of Greenville; son, Attorney Tyrone Morrow of Raleigh; four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Thomas and Mrs. Marie Pla of New York City, Mrs. Georgia Whitted of Hillsborough, Mrs. Rebecca Jones of Atlantic City, N.J.; several grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the church Monday, 10-10:45 a.m. The family will be at her son's home, 1500 Perryclear Court, Raleigh.

LILLIE SANDERS
RALEIGH - Lillie A. Sanders, of 3109 River Oak Turn, died Friday, February 12, 1999. Funeral service to be held at 12 noon, Monday, February 15, at Wilson Temple United Methodist Church. Burial follows in Raleigh Memorial Park.
She was preceded in death by Allen Joe Sanders.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving sons, L. Earl, Kenneth L. "Squirrel," Andrew, Ricky and Carlton, all of Raleigh; a sister, Geneva Cooley of Clayton; two brothers, Robert and Carter Atkinson, both of Clayton; two aunts, Faye Hightower of Richmond, Va., Marion Watson of Clayton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Family will be at the church from 11:30-12:00 noon, Monday, other times at 5008 Avenida Del Sol.

WILBUR L. WALKER
RALEIGH - Wilbur Leon Walker, 67, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Mr. Walker was born in Harnett Co.
Graveside service will be conducted Monday, Feb. 15, 1999 at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: son, James Earl Walker, Raleigh; mother, Mattie Flowers Walker, Coats; sisters, Lottie Harward, Sanford, Sue Denning, Angier, and Janice Sealey of Raleigh; brothers, Billy Walker, Sanford, Gerald Walker, Benson, Stacy Walker of Coats.

LEON L. WINSTEAD
MIDDLESEX - Leon L. Winstead, age 83, died Saturday, February 13, 1999, at Nash Grove Manor in Nashville.
Funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. from the Spring Hope Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Paul Johnson. Interment will follow in Spring Hope Memorial Gardens, Spring Hope.
Mr. Winstead was born in Nash County on August 6, 1915 and was a retired farmer.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Guy of Angier; Debbie W instead of Wendell; three sons, Albert Winstead of Oklahoma City; Rudolph Winstead of Louisburg; Sammy Winstead of Bunn; three sisters, Dollie Whitley of Zebulon; Velora Leslie of Goldsboro; Lizzie Murray of Wake Forest; two brothers, Lancey Winstead of Rocky Mount; Frank Winstead of Spring Hope; eighteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the Spring Hope Funeral Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at 13222 West Hwy. 97, Zebulon.

EDITH B. WORRELL
RICH SQUARE - Edith B. Worrell, 80, Main St., Rich Square, died February 12, 1999 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was a native of Hickory and was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A home economics teacher in Rich Square and a retired assistant postmistress at Rich Square Post Office with 31 years service, she was an active member of Rich Square United Methodist Church and was predeceased by her husband, William E. Worrell.
Surviving: son, William E. Worrell, II and wife, Judy of Wake Forest; sisters, Dr. Irene Boliek, Dalton, GA; Dorothy Sitton and husband, Sam, Dalton, GA; Louise Stirewalt, Granite Fall, Margaret Hoza and husband, George, Bradenton, FL; grandchildren, Kristin B. Worrell, Raleigh, Meredith Worrell Furr and husband, Jeff, Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held at Rich Square United Methodist Church, 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 14, 1999, with Rev. Sally Plowman and Rev. Charles Plowman officiating, interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Memorial donations may be made to Rich Square United Methodist Church, 263 South Main St., Rich Square, N.C. 27869.

CHRISTINE BATTLE
RALEIGH - Christine Battle, of 5113 Mial Plantation Road, died Thursday. Funeral service 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Lea Funeral Home. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: daughter, Lillie Ruth Whitaker of Islip, NY; sisters, Cora Bell Taylor, Virginia Robertson, Ernestine Price, Lillian Price, Cassie O'Neal and Pearline Hinton, all of Raleigh; brothers, Jerry Price and Sidney Price, both of Raleigh; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Visitation 12-12:30 p.m. Saturday at Lea Funeral Home.

TEMPIE OUTLAW HARDESTY
RALEIGH - Tempie Outlaw Hardesty, 58, of Raleigh died Wed., May 26, 1999, at Rex Hospital.
She was a preschool teacher at Raleigh Preschool and Hayes Barton United Methodist Church Preschool. She was dedicated to her family, friends and students and impacted over a thousand children during her teaching career.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Edwin Stock officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the service.
She is survived by her husband, Ivan Hardesty, Jr., of Raleigh; parents, Dot and Tom Outlaw of Raleigh; two sons, Steve Hardesty and Scott Hardesty, both of Raleigh; and a brother, Tom Outlaw, Jr., of Asheville.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Tempie Hardesty Memorial Fund, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 111 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, NC 27601. These funds will be used toward the construction of a preschool area at the church.

AGATHA LEWIS HUNTER
RALEIGH - Agatha Lewis Hunter, of 559 E. Edenton Street, died May 24, 1999 at Rex Hospital.
Homegoing service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 29, at First Baptist Church, 101 S. Wilmington Street.
Family visitation 11:00 until 11:30 a.m. The eulogy will be given by Dr. Dumas A. Harshaw, pastor. Interment will be observed at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, James H. (Pee Wee) Hunter.
Survivors are: daughter, Francine Hunter of Raleigh; sons, James H. Hunter Jr. of the home and Joseph Hunter III of Japan; grandchildren, James H. Hunter III of Raleigh, Joseph Hunter IV and Konomi Hunter of Japan; one sister, Susie W. Hunter of Raleigh; a brother, Bishop Lawrence Lewis (Carolyn) of Suffolk, Va.; sisters-in-law, Hannah Jackson of Garner, Mary Bryant, Odessa Andrews and Evangeline Debnam (Dwight), all of Washington, DC; brother-in-law, Joseph A. Hunter (Anna) of Raleigh; several nieces; nephews and cousins also mourn her departure.
