VIVIAN SULLIVAN MILLER
RALEIGH - Vivian Sullivan Miller, 68, of Raleigh, went to be with the Lord May 26, 1999 after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Gladly choosing a career of homemaker when she and Jr. were married, she will always be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife and mother, as well as a kind and caring sister and friend.
she was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Surviving is her husband of 49 years, Jr. Miller; daughters, Cindy Buxton of Charlotte, Tanya Register of Apex, Janet Rhudy of Garner; son, TIm Miller of Kings Mountains; and sister, Mildred "Millie" Nicothodes of Mesa, Arizona. Also seven grandchildren, Bo and Laura Buxton, Joshua Register, Daniel and Matthew Rhudy, Rebekah and Kathlene Miller; one great-grandson, Robby Rhudy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dora and Arthur Sullivan and her brother, Arthur Jr.
Memorial service at Forest Hills Baptist Church (Chapel), 1 p.m. Friday, May 28.
Contributions may be made in Vivian's name to Forest Hills Baptist Church.

HOWARD BELMONT PULLEN JR.
RALEIGH - Howard Belmont Pullen, Jr., son of the late Howard and Violet May Pullen, was born March 17, 1922, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He departed this life on Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Wake Medical Center.
He attended the Raleigh Public Schools and Saint Augustine's College Preparatory School. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Saint Augustine's College, a Bachelor of Science Degree from North Carolina College and a Master of Arts Degree from New York University. He continued to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Wake Technical College. While attending "St. Aug.", he participated in basketball, track and football. After receiving his "greetings" from Uncle Sam, he served his country with distinction.
Howard was a member of the Piedmont Board of Officials (P.B.O.) and officiated in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for 26 years. He was a recreation supervisor for the city of Raleigh for 14 years. Prior to this, he taught in the Wake County School System.
He was a lifetime member of Saint Ambrose Episcopal Church. He was also a member of Saint Augustine's College "Falcon Foundation", a charter member of the Optimist Club of Southeast Raleigh, the North Carolina Park and Recreation Society, Meadowbrook Country Club and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
In 1951, he married Bernetta La Vonne Horton. Along with her he leaves his daughters Pearlette Kathryn of Silver Spring, Maryland and Marguerite Elizabeth Hardaway and son-in-law Dwight of Luthersville, Georgia, his beloved grandchildren, Cathea, "Rudy" and Dwight, Jr., "D. J.", his sister Dorothy Snelling Pullen Moore and brother-in-law Irvin of High Point, NC, sister-in-law Mary Gray Horton, cousins Claude Snelling, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, Carlton James Barber of College Park, Georgia, Valerie Maye Young of Raleigh, NC, nieces and nephews and a host of loving relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: St. Augustine's College, Falcon Foundation, P.O. Box 26662, Raleigh, North Carolina 27611-6662 or St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, 813 Darby Street, Raleigh, NC 27610.

FRED L. SYKES
SEPT. 3 1933 - MAY 25, 1999
CLAYTON - Fred L. Sykes, 65, of 689 Corbett Road, died Tuesday at the VA Medical Center in Durham. He was a retired Master Sergeant, USMC and from Raleigh Housing Authority.
Fred was Past Master of Vandora Lodge #745, Past Patron of Eastern Star, a member of Scottish Rite and Amran Shrine.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel in Garner. Burial with military Honors, Maplewood Cemetery, Clayton.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Sykes; sons, Dewayne and wife Lynn Sykes of Knightdale, Frederick Sykes of Raleigh, Christopher Sykes of Wilmington; daughters, Carolyn and husband David Stafford, Vickie and husband Randy Earp, both of Garner; step-daughters, Denise Pacheco of Clayton and Lisa Gallegos of Selma; sisters, Edith Honeycutt of Willow Spring, Fay Steinbaugh and Loretta Imhoff, both of Baltimore, MD; brothers, Tom Sykes of Clayton and Lowell Sykes of High Point; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a stepson, Frank J. Brager, Jr., a sister, Margaret Abernathy, and a brother, Carrol Sykes.

CHRISTINE B. BAGWELL
RALEIGH - Mrs. Christine B. Bagwell, 76, of Raleigh, NC, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Bagwell was born in Harnett Co., NC on June 19, 1922, the daughter of the late Joe Cephus and Callie Jackson Barbour. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis D. Bagwell.
She was a long time member of the Temple Baptist Church. She and her late husband, Louis D. Bagwell owned and operated Bagwell Plumbing in Raleigh for many years.
Mrs. Bagwell was retired as an auditor with the State Board of Education.
Surviving are her beloved and devoted daughter, Donna Bagwell of Raleigh, NC; brother, Edward Barbour and wife, Tabatha of Atlantic Beach, NC; sister, Nellie Stephens of Portsmouth, VA; close friend and sister-in-law, Agnes Barbour of Raleigh, NC; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home St. Mary's St. Chapel by Dr. Charles Johnson. Interment will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Dr., Raleigh, NC 27609 or to the American Lung Association, 800 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

JACKIE THOMAS CARTER
FAYETTEVILLE - Mr. Jackie Thomas Carter, 48, of 6360 NC Hwy 87 South, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital. Graveside service 11 a.m. Saturday at Cross Creek Cemetery. Chaplain Bobby Bunce officiating.
Visitation, 7-9 p.m. Friday at the home of Fraley & Mildred Windsor, 3209 Kentyre Drive. Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Highland Funeral Service & Crematory.
Surviving: two sons, Shawn Carter, Trictian Carter, both of Clinton; two daughters, Michelle Gregory of Raleigh, Kim Clem of New Hampshire; two brothers, John Mike Carter of Erwin, Gary L. Carter of Hope Mills; one grandchild.

THOMAS BARNES COLEMAN SR.
ROCKY MOUNT - Thomas Barnes Coleman, Sr., 87, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999. He was born in Edgecombe County, August 26, 1911, son of the late Thomas W. and Bessie Barnes Coleman. Mr. Coleman was former President of Nash Brick Company and a member of First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount.
Mr. Coleman was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Turner Coleman, two brothers, William Rose Coleman, Edward Wilson Coleman, and a sister, Elizabeth C. Pittman.
Surviving: sons and daughter-in-law, Richard T. Coleman of Lincolnton, Thomas B. Jr. and Virginia Coleman of Rocky Mount; daughter, Betsy Coleman of Wilson; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Pineview, Section 55, with Rev. William V. Grisham officiating.
Family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the home 635 Tarboro Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

THOMAS W. DAVIS
ABERDEEN - Thomas W. Davis, 82, of Aberdeen, died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital on May 26, 1999. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Mr. Davis was a veteran of the US Army during WW II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a member of the Southern Pines Masonic Lodge #484 and the Moore County Shrine Club and a 33rd Degree Shriner and a member of the Oasis Temple. He was a Past President of the 6th Field Artillary Veterans Association in Baltimore, MD.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with interment to follow at Cross Hill Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Katheryn Scarboro Davis; son, Thomas C. Davis of Aberdeen; daughter, Lourine Van Etten of Concord; brother, Vernon Davis of Oakmont, PA also survives as do three grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Oasis Temple, P.O. Box 560666, Charlotte, NC 28156-0666.
The family will receive friends at Boles Funeral Home & Crematory in Southern Pines on Friday, May 28, from 7-9 p.m.

PERCY LUTHER DRIVER
CLAYTON - Percy Luther Driver, 66, of 14645 Buffalo Rd., died Tuesday, 5/25. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in McLaurin Funeral Home chapel with burial to follow in Gethsemane Memorial Park, Zebulon. Rev. C.W. Driver officiating.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Pam Driver of Clayton, Terry and Lois Driver of Clayton, Marshall and Jo Driver of Crawfordville, FL; brothers, Ray Driver of Wendell, Carlton Driver of Zebulon; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one special grandchild.
Preceded in death by: parents, L.H. and Lila Driver; wife, Annette Driver.
Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

WILLIAM KING FAISON
CHARLOTTE - William King Faison, 86, died Thursday, May 27, 1999 at the Stewart Health Center, Charlotte.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 29, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, corner of Mulberry and James Street, Goldsboro. The Faison family will receive friends in the parish hall following the service.
Bill Faison was a gentleman with an unmatched sense of humor. He grew up in Faison, NC, attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, raised a family, owned an automobile dealership, and was involved with numerous civic organizations in Jacksonville, NC. He retired to Goldsboro and recently moved to Charlotte. He served as an infantry officer during World War II in the European theater and was awarded two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts, and a Combat Infantryman Badge for his heroic and distinguished service. In 1992, at the age of 80, former First Lieutenant William King Faison was awarded the Bronze Star by General Griffin and also received a letter of praise and congratulations from General Colin Powell and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Mr. Faison is predeceased by his first wife, Marie Garrett Faison.
He is survived by his wife, Eugenia Dewey Faison; daughters, Marla Faison Mann, Frances Faison, Lane Faison Sutton and her husband Winston; stepchildren, Mollie Faison, Steele Dewey and his wife Molly; sisters, Frances Johnson, Lib Veldhuis; grandchildren, John Mann, Robert Mann, Lindsay Mann, Jay Faison, Lane Faison, George Dewey, Eddie Dewey, Dosty Dewey, Shippen Browne, Clarke Browne, Katie Browne; great-grandsons, William Faison Mann, Thomas Mann, James Mann; and numerous other relatives and close friends.
Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center is entrusted.

CARROLL C. MATTHEWS
FEB 16, 1927 - MAY 26, 1999
RALEIGH - Carroll Clyde Matthews, 72, of Raleigh, died Wednesday at Rex Hospital.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, Garner. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Gwen P. Matthews; daughter, Vicki Smith of Garner; sons, Charles Matthews of Garner, Ronald Matthews of Harrisonburg, Va; brother, M.B. Matthews Jr. of NC; grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Smith, Travis Matthews and Amberle Matthews.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

LESTER WARREN OWEN
SYLVA - Lester Warren Owen, 80, of 599 Savannah Drive, Sylva, NC, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health. A native of Durham, he was the son of the late Zeb Raleigh Owens and Lucy Whitt Owens. Mr. Owen was a 1937 graduate of Braggtown High School in Durham. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and saw 701 days in action in various European campaigns. A 1954 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, he was Durham County's first full time county attorney. He began the Durham County Child Support Enforcement Unit and was active nationally in the creation of child support enforcement legislation. In 1994 the N.C. Association of County Attorneys presented him with a lifetime achievement award for his efforts.
He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Amerith Nichols Owen, of Sylva; a daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Richard Harper also of Sylva, NC; and four grandchildren, Jillian Blair Harper, Joshua Owen Harper, David Warren Harper and Chadwick James Harper. Also surviving are a special niece and nephew formerly of the home, Bobbie Jean Sanderford Glasgow of Monroe, NC and Jackson Ray Sanderford, Sr. of Durham, NC, and several other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Melton-Riddle Funeral Home in Sylva. The family will then receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Hudson Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 31 at Olive Branch Baptist Church in Durham, with interment in the church cemetery afterwards. Serving as pallbearers will be: Connie Carden, Steve Bratton, Claude Hunter, D. J. James, A. A. McDonald, Jr., Wade C. Parrish, Bill Patrick, and Jackson Ray Sanderford, Jr.
Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to Olive Branch Baptist Church, 123 Olive Branch Rd., Durham, NC 27703.

JOHN S. PATRICK, SR
ALCOA, TN - John Shepherd Patrick, Sr, 81 of Alcoa, Tennessee died at 12:45 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, 1999. Born in Wake County, (Cary), North Carolina. In his early years, Mr. Patrick lived and worked in Apex and Cary and in Johnston County, N.C., and then moved to East Tennessee during the residential construction of the Manhattan Project. Served in the United States Marine Corps, First Separate Engineers in the Pacific and Asian arena during World War II. After the war, he returned to Maryville, TN., where he was a home builder and contractor for a number of years. For the past many years, Mr. Patrick and his son, have farmed in the Blount, Monroe and McMinn Counties of East Tennessee.
Preceded in death by: Wife, Velma Clifton Patrick; Parents, Will and Hattie Patrick; Brothers, James and Lee Patrick; Sister, Evelyn Patrick. Survivors include: Son, John S. Patrick, Jr. (Johnny Patrick) of Alcoa; Daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Sam Meacham of Knoxville; granddaughter, Katherine Reed of Knoxville; Brother, Tom and wife Helen Patrick of Chester, VA; Special friends: Anne Gillenwater; and Homer Roberts, all of Maryville, TN; Raymond and Hope Loveday of Friendsville, TN.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, May 28, 1999, in the Trinity Chapel, Smith Mortuary, Lamar Alexander Parkway., Maryville, Tennessee. Funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the Trinity Chapel of Smith's Mortuary, with Pastor Scott Knight of Maryville Friends Church officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Grandview Cemetery for interment.

LILA BROWN PEEPLES
SPRINGFIELD, SC - Mrs. Lila Brown Peeples, 81, of Springfield, SC, died Thursday, May 27, 1999.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 1999 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Springfield.
Survivors include a brother, Reginald "Sam" Brown of Fuquay-Varina, NC.
Visitation from 7-9 p.m. Friday, at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North, SC.
