PATRICIA KEENAN
MT. OLIVE - Patricia Keenan, of Mt. Olive, died Saturday morning in Goldsboro. She was 67. A member of the St. Raphael Parish Family in Raleigh, she was a member of the choir for more than a decade. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, John A. Keenan, their children, Kathleen, Barbara, Sue, John Jr., Mary, and Patrick, 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, John A. Lacy, of Encinitas, California, and his wife, Lee, as well as her best friend, Mary McGinnis.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 20th, at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes any contributions be made in her name to The American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc., Raleigh.

ISAAC JEROME "I.J." SANDLIN
BEULAVILLE - Isaac Jerome "I.J." Sandlin, 83, passed away at Guardian Care of Kenansville. Mr. Sandlin attended Wake Forest College. He served during World War II with the 8th Army Air Force and with the Beulaville National Guard during the Korean War. He also served on the draft board in Duplin County during the Vietname War era.
Mr. Sandlin, in partnership with his sisters, operated I.J. Sandlin Co., a family business started by his father, until the late 1970's, after which he was a partner in the Beulaville Garment Company and a farmer.
Mr. Sandlin was an active member of Duplin County and the Beulaville community. He was a sponsor of the James Sprunt Community College Foundation and a long time member of the Board of Directors of United Carolina Bank.
Mr. Sandlin was an active member of the Beulaville Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, having been ordained as a Decaon in 1948 and an Elder in 1970. He also served as treasurer and assistant treasurer of the church from 1963-1987, was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Choir.
Mr. Sandlin was a devoted husband and father who is survived by his wife, Joy Edwards Sandlin, who resides a Guardian Care of Kenansville; three children and four grandchildren: Issac Jerome Sandlin, Jr., his sons, Isaac Jerome, III and Sherman Edwards Sandlin of Beulaville, Randy Addison Sandlin of Brooklyn, NY, Martha Sandlin von Ammon and her husband, Eric Von Ammon, and their daughters, Jessica Sandlin von Ammon and Caroline Sandlin von Ammon of Sharon, VT.
The funeral will be held at the Beulaville Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 18, 1999 at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in East Duplin Memorial Gardens, Beulaville.
Visitation will be at Community Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beulaville Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 363, Beulaville, NC 28518.

BURNET F. SIRES SR.
MT. PLEASANT, SC - Burnet F. Sires, Sr., 65, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died Monday at his residence. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Burnet F. Sires Sr. are invited to attend the funeral service of the former Thursday, February 18, 1999 in Christ Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Sires was born in Charleston, a son of Norman Gruber Sires, Sr. and Emily "Billie" Neece Sires. He graduated from Carlisle military Academy and attended the Citadel. He was employed in the lumber business with his father at Sires Lumber Company. He also worked for Charleston Line Handlers, Inc. and Southern Lumber Company.
Mr. Sires was a member of Mt. Pleasant Sertoma and East Cooper Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving as President. He attended Christ Church where he served on the Vestry. He served in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife, Caroline Boykin Edwards Sires; daughter, Elisabeth Sires Lewis; son, Edward Boykin Sires of Charleston; grandson, Haynes Lewis of Columbia; sister, Norma Wofford of Charleston; brother, Gruber Sires Jr. of Seneca.
He was preceded in death by his son, B. Frank Sires, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 267, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.

FAYE ABELL McCARTHY
CHAPEL HILL - Faye Abell McCarthy, 64, died Sunday, March 21, 1999 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, following a lengthy, courageous battle against cancer and concomitant treatments. Mrs. McCarthy was born in Smithfield, NC, on August 7, 1934, to the late Dixie Johnson and Edward Abell. Her paternal grandfather was Edward S. Abell, a prominent Johnston County attorney.
She attended Smithfield schools and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill cum laude, with majors in Journalism and French. Mrs. McCarthy subsequently spent many years as a television production assistant, most notably with the "Jackie Gleason Show" in New York and Miami, and with "The Garry Moore Show" along with staff positions at the NBC Network. After leaving television, she worked as a Real Estate Broker in Kure Beach, NC.
She is survived by cousins, Jean Brewer Downing of Naples, FL, Jean and William Israel of Wilson, NC and Mrs. George Doak of Chapel Hill, NC; and her lifelong companion, Robert Dowling of Raleigh.
Graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Smithfield, NC on Thursday, March 25 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Williams officiating.

HUGH McADEN WELLS JR.
CORNELIUS - Mr. Hugh McAden Wells Jr, 71, of Lake Norman, Lakeview Circle, Cornelius, died Sunday March 7, 1999 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted March 10 at Bethel Presbyterian Church.
He was born October 21, 1927 in Cambridge, Mass., a son of the late Hugh M. and Louise Hunter Wells, Sr. of Duplin County. He attended school in Teachey, Rose Hill, Magnolia, and graduated from Chinquapin High School. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session in the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Wells was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, WWII and the Korean War, and retired from Dandoz Chemical Corp. He attended Presbyterian Junior College and N.C. State University, was past Master of the Long Creek Masonic Lodge A.F. & M 205 and Scottish Rites and Oasis Shrine.
Survivors are his wife of 49 years, Catherine Price Wells; son, Hugh M. "Chip" Wells III and wife, Karen of Harrisburg; daughter, Tamra "Tammy" Wells Vanhoy and husband, Ted of Slidell, LA; brothers, Hunter Wells of Goldsboro, Alfred Wells of Wrightsville Beach and Dr. Donn Wells of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sister, Connie Wells Flory of Cary; grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Vanhoy and Bethaney, Lauren and Garrett Wells.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19920 Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19920 Bethel Church Road, Cornelius, NC 28301; or The Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, NC 29605.
Arrangements are by Almond Raymer & McConnell Funeral Home, Huntersville, NC.

MABLE ELLEN BARKER BAILEY
APEX - Mable Ellen Barker Bailey, age 94, formerly of Apex, NC, died March 19, 1999 at Harbor View Nursing Home in Morehead City due to an extended illness. She was a member of the Apex Baptist Church, a native of Wake Co., and a tobacco company bookkeeper.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Dewey Bailey.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 West Williams St., HWY 55, Apex, NC. Officiating will be Rev. Phil Qualls. Burial will follow in the Apex Cemetery, in Apex, NC.
The family will receive friends at Apex Funeral Home Wednesday from 12 noon until services and immediately following the service.

MILDRED W. BATTS
MACCLESFIELD - Mildred Whittfield Webb Batts, 78, died Monday, March 22, 1999. She was a member of Webbs Chapel Church and a retired elementary teacher.
Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday, Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 US 264 West, with the Rev. David Adams officiating. Burial, family cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Judy Batts Thrasher of Smithfield, Sandra Ellis of Raleigh, April Letchworth of Macclesfield; son, Dwight Batts of Macclesfield; sisters, Betty Mavis Batts of Greenville, Thelma Porter of Simpson, Louise Reel of Greenville, Louise Webb of Bellarthur; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

LEO T. BRINSON
ARAPAHOE - Leo T. Brinson, 76, a native of Arapahoe, NC died March 21 after suffering complications of pneumonia.
He served as a Lt. in the US Navy during World WAR II in Guam.
He received his Masters degree in Engineering from NCSU, and was employed in the midwest during his working years at Nordberg Mfg. of Milwaukee, Brown Boveri of St. Cloud, MN and GM of LaGrange, IL.
He retired and returned to his hometown of Arapahoe in 1987, where he has been active in local activities. He has served as Mayor of Arapahoe for the past 10 years, past president of Rotary of Oriental, member of Pamlico Shrine Club, advisory board of the Charter School, Retirement Club of Arapahoe, and an active member of Bethany Christian Church of Arapahoe.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Madge Cross Brinson; one son, Edward and his wife, Sue Brinson of Madison, WI; one daughter, Linda and her husband, Barry Fox of Cheshire, CT; and three granddaughters, Meghan, Molly and Lana Fox of Cheshire, CT; one sister, Kathleen and her husband "Shadow" Nelson of Chapala, Mexico; one brother, Bill and his wife, Marian Brinson of Chapel Hill; one special uncle, Jack Brinson of Arapahoe and one aunt, Edith Brinson of Twin Rivers Nursing Home of New Bern, NC and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany Christian Church. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. Wed. at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, NC 7-8 p.m. Tuesday night.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethany Christian Church, the Pamlico County Rescue Squad, Bayboro, NC or the charity of your choice.

CYNTHIA B. BRITT
DURHAM - Mrs. Cynthia Brown Britt, 59, of Durham, died Sunday evening at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Mrs. Britt was born in Oak City, the daughter of the late Cecil Norman Brown and Zula Howell Brown. Mrs. Britt was a teacher and assistant principal at Little River Elementary School for many years, and also worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's State Farm Insurance Agency, and as a tax preparer for H&R Block. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Waldon Britt.
Surviving Mrs. Britt are: two sons, Tony Britt of Durham and Andy Britt of Chapel Hill; one sister, Janice Brown Hollomon of Raleigh; and two granddaughters, Kylie Miller Britt and Kasey Ann Britt, both of Durham.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church in Durham, Rev. Robert O'Keefe officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be: Cameron Britt, Forest Britt, Jimmy Bryant, George Hollomon, Roger Hollomon and Frank White. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

MARY N. CAMPBELL
CHARLOTTE - Mary Northcutt Campbell, 77, of Charlotte, NC died peacefully March 21, 1999 at her home.
A gifted artist, she was born December 9, 1921 in Marietta, GA, the youngest of three girls. In her early teens, she moved to Wilmington, DE where she graduated from Friends School. A graduate of St. Mary's Junior College, she studied art at the Richmond Institute of Technology. She continued taking art classes throughout her life.
In 1945, she married William Cooper Campbell, Jr. After moving to Charlotte in 1955, Mrs. Campbell became Youth Program Director of the YWCA. In that position, she made a strong, positive impact on the lives of many young women. Later, she used her art background and talent at Leon Stack's (now the Studio Shop) advising clients on framing and hanging artwork. She restored pictures and frames as well. She worked at John Dabb's Ltd., and most recently learned the art of chair caning and restored antique chairs.
She was a longtime member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church and was actively involved in the Providence Class and Circle #6.
In addition to many nieces and nephews whose lives she so positively influenced, Mrs. Campbell is survived by her husband, William C. Campbell, Jr.; her children, Lucile Mackay, and her husband, John, of Leeds, AL, William C. Campbell, III, and his wife, Muffin, of Charlotte, Martha Howell, and her husband, Steve, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; grandchildren, Ian and Sean Mackay, Saunders, Winters, and Cooper Campbell, and Casey Howell; and her sister, Jane Brown, of Marietta, GA.
Mrs. Campbell's love of life, incredible attitude in the face of adversity, sense of humor and her caring and compassionate nature made her a delight to all who came to know her. Mary's family, friends, and neighbors will always celebrate the joy and light she brought into their lives.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. Raymond D. Scott, officiating. Inurnment will be private for the family in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends following the memorial service until 4 p.m. in Providence Hall at the church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Alexander Children's Center, P.O. Box 220632, Charlotte, NC 28222; YWCA, 3420 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209; Myers Park Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 6160, Charlotte, NC 28207; or Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mrs. Campbell.

J. LONNIE HARRIS
JACKSONVILLE, FL - J. Lonnie Harris, born Jan. 13, 1919, died March 17, 1999. he was a native of Henderson, NC and attended N.C. State on a football scholarship. He was active in the NCSU Wolfpack Club and Alumni Assoc.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Louise Peterson Harris; brother, Frank A. Harris and Evelyn of Raleigh, NC; brother-in-law, Stephen G. Peterson Jr. and Althea of Raleigh; nieces, Sarah Perlov and Lee, Linda Peterson and David, all of Raleigh; nephew, Stephen G. Peterson, III and Teresa of Madison, WI.
Services were held 3 p.m. Sat., March20, 1999 at Ortega United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, FL. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Richmond,VA at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 1999.

PRESTON HIGH
RALEIGH - Preston Earl "French Fry" High of 713 Van Buren Rd., died Friday, March 19, 1999.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday at Haywood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Roann M. High; daughters, Priscilla R. High and Vickie R. High, both of Raleigh, and Sarah H. Morgan of Raleigh; sister, Sarah Johnson of Bronx, NY; brothers, H.C. High and Harold High, both of Raleigh; Joseph High of Los Angeles, Carl High of Cary and the Rev. Dr. Percy High of Durham three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
Family visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12:30 -1:00 p.m.

HALSIE CHAVIS HOLDEN
RALEIGH - Halsie Chavis Holden, of 521 Poplar Springs Road, died Sunday, March 21, 1999 at Western Wake Hospital. Funeral service 1 p.m. Wednesday at Haywood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
She is survived by sisters, Dorothy Mitchener of Cary, Eloise Dew of Raleigh; brother-in-law, Matthew Dew of Raleigh; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Visitation at the funeral home, 12:30-1 p.m. Wednesday.
