RAYMOND B. HOOKER JR.
WINSTON-SALEM - Raymond B. Hooker, Jr., a retired Media Executive with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, died March 20, 1999 in Winston-Salem. He was the son of Raymond B. Hooker, Sr. and Lucile Sugg Hooker of Kinston.
Mr. Hooker was born July 27, 1930 in Kinston. He earned his B.A. degree at Duke University in 1952 and later attended George Washington University and Wake Forest University. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as an Associate in the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. Afterwards, he relocated to Winston-Salem and was a 35 year employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
A memorial service will be held in Winston-Salem at a later date.
Memorials can be made to an existing Raymond B. Hooker, Jr. fund of the Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 West Fifth Street in Winston-Salem, The Forsyth Humane Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
A private interment will be held at Kinston's Maplewood Cemetery at a later date.

MARIAN C. IRWIN
RALEIGH - Marian Crawford Irwin, 92, died Monday, March 22, 1999. Mrs. Irwin was born in Chelsea, N.Y. and came to North Carolina many years ago.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, in 1987.
Surviving are her son, Charles Irwin of Macon; brother, Kenneth Crawford of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials to Leesville Baptist Church, Route 15, Box 241, Raleigh, N.C. 27612.

RUBY B. KORBEL
HOPE MILLS - Mrs. Ruby Boyette Korbel, 66, of 2907 Peacock Street, Hope Mills, NC died Saturday, March 20, 1999 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
She was a homemaker.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 1999 with Rev. Thomas N. White officiating. Burial, Cumberland Memorial Gardens.
Visitation at Reeves Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
Survivors: husband, Rudolph Korbel; two sons, Alan Korbel of Gulfport, MI, Gregory Korbel of Raleigh, NC; two daughters, Theresa McLemore, Kansas City, MO, Karen Nichols of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, Curtis Boyette of Garner, NC, Bobby Boyette of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren.

WALTER D. LATHAM
THOMASVILLE - Walter Dean Latham, 33, of 1101 W. Green St., died Sunday, March 21, 1999.
He was born April 22, 1965 in Bexar County, Texas, son of William Carson Latham and Elizabeth Dean Latham. He was a computer engineer with IBM, Inc. He was a graduate of Thomasville High School in 1983. A graduate of East Carolina University and attended graduate school at East Carolina University. Mr. Latham held Multiple Certifications in computer technology and he was the chairman of the Davidson County Libertarian Party. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as an Acolyte.
He was married April 15, 1998 to Jill Trotter who survives of the home. Also, surviving are his parents, Drs. William and Elizabeth Latham of Thomasville; stepson, Aaron Bean of the home; brothers, William Carson Latham Jr. of Baytown, Texas, Norman Biggs Latham of Thomasville.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Memorial United Methodist Church, with Dr. Kyles Y. Wallace, Rev. P. Glenn Kinken III and Rev. Peggy Finch officiating. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and other times at the home of his parents, 204 E. Lake Drive, Thomasville.
Memorials may be directed to Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 428, Thomasville, N.C. 27360.

LENWOOD EARL MURPHY
ROSE HILL - Mr. Lenwood Earl Murphy, age 69, of 113 Rosewood Lane in Rose Hill, died earl y Sunday morning, March 21, 1999, at the V.A. Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday March 24, from the Charity United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Paul Stallsworth, Rev. J.B. Helmes and Rev. Rob Hammonds. Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Atkinson Murphy, one sister, Mrs. Pearl Murphy Redmon of Asheville, several special nieces and nephews and a special caretaker, Mrs. Estella Allen of Rose Hill. Mr. Murphy was pre-deceased by two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Murphy Durden and Mrs. Ruth Murphy Kilpatrick and a brother, Holmes Murphy.
Born on June 22, 1929 in Duplin County, Mr. Murphy was the son of the late Alfred Roscoe and Flossie Teachey Murphy and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired farmer and was a member of the Charity United Methodist Church.
Casketbearers will be Donald Chasten, Gary Faircloth, Billy Floyd, Bobby Teachey, Jimmy Teachey and Bobby Ward.
The family will receive at their residence, 113 Rosewood Lane in Rose Hill.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Linda Atkinson Knowles Scholarship Fund, c/o Janice Johnson, P.O. Box 365, Rose Hill, NC 28458.

JENNY LYNN PRINCE
CLAYTON - Infant Jenny Lynn Prince, born Feb. 25th, 1999, died March 21st, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd at 3:00 p.m. in the Swift Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe Zimmerman will officiate.
Surviving are her parents, Billy Prince and Judy Pergerson of Clayton, and a sister, Beverly Pergerson of Clayton. Also surviving are her maternal grandmother; Jenny Olive Height of Raleigh, and her paternal grandparents, Billy Ray Prince, Sr., of Wake Forest, and Margaret Ruth Prince of Selma.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church, preceding the service.
Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St., Apex, NC, is entrusted with funeral arrangements.

JULIOUS WINSHIP SEAGROVES SR.
APEX - Julious W. Seagroves, Sr., 83, of 12927 U.S. 64 East, died Sunday evening in Chatham Hospital in Siler City, NC. Mr. Seagroves was a tobacco farmer and logger for most of his working life, but he also retired from the UNC Physical Plant, in 1979.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 24th, at 4 p.m. in Merritt's Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Olive Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Apex. Dr. Rick Tysinger will officiate.
Mr. Seagroves was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mable C. Seagroves, on March 12th, this year.
He is survived by a son, Julious W. Seagroves, Jr. and wife Betsy of Apex; three daughters, Jean W. Fish and Judy S. Mann, both of Apex, and Linda S. Phillips and husband, Charles, of Bear Creek. Also surviving are a brother, David L. Seagroves of Apex; six grandchildren, Kevin Seagroves, Johnny and Chad Mann, Dwayne and Julie Phillips, and Angie Martin, and two great-grandchildren, Hunter Mann and Bryce Phillips.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Apex Funeral Home, 511 W. Williams St., in Apex, and other times at the homeplace. Flowers are welcomed, and memorials may be made to Merritt's Chapel United Methodist Church, 1090 Farrington Point Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

DEWEY W. SIMPSON
LUCAMA - Dewey Waylon Simpson, 49, died March 21, 1999. She was born September 8, 1949.
Graveside 11 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. DeWayne Eakes. Burial, Maplewood Cemetery.
Survivors: wife, Deborah Morgan Simpson; step-daughter, Heather McKay of the home; step-son, Jeremy "J.P." Paul of the home; niece, Sarah Smith of Lucama.
Preceded in death by his brother, Bo Simpson.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 US 264 West.

BONNIE B. SMITH
CLAYTON - Bonnie B. Smith, 72, died Sunday. Services Wednesday at McLaurin Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 am. and graveside in New Bern Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Joe Brothers and Rev. Steve Wakefield officiating.
She is survived by: sisters, Mae Ellis of Kinston, Margaret Robbins of Kinston and Carol Robertson of Clayton; brother, Eddie W. Brooks of Senora, CA.
Visitation, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.H

LINWOOD KIMMON STEPHENSON
WAKE FOREST - Linwood Kimmon Stephenson, 84, of 12753 Wake Union Church Road, died Sunday at his home.
He retired from Wake Electric Membership Corporation as Director of Public Relations and Member Education, with over 30 years of service. He was a former Deacon of the Woodland Baptist Church, where he was a member, and he had served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Woodland Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving is his wife, Geneva Powell Stephenson; daughters, Donna Rollins Pace and her husband, Bob of Wake Forest, Linda Rollins Betsch and her husband, Jeff of Cumming, Ga.; a grandson, John C. Roberts and wife, Stephanie of Cumming, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bright Funeral Home.
Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions can be made to Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 2596 Henderson, NC 27536; or to the Woodland Baptist Church Building Fund, 190 Woodland Church Road, Wake Forest, N.C.

MARGARET E. STRICKLAND
ZEBULON - Margaret Eddins Strickland, 85, widow of Bernice Strickland, died Sunday evening. Mrs. Strickland was the daughter of the late Hubert and Nina Mitchell Eddins.
Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday Massey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: son, Leslie Strickland of Franklin, TN; sister Doris E. Farrington of Zebulon; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

ALBERT E. FOX
JAN. 11, 1923 - APRIL 28, 1999
FUQUAY-VARINA - Albert E. Fox, 76, of 808 Alderleaf Dr., died April 28, 1999 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham. He has been ill for an extended length of time.
Mr. Fox was born January 11, 1923 in Corry, PA where he was raised and educated. He was the son of Richard and Nelly Schaffer Fox.
Mr. Fox was a veteran, having served in the armed forces in World War II in the European Theatre and was a prisoner of war. He was discharged August 21, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Eula and a brother, David.
Mr. Fox leaves his beloved wife, Phyllis Jean Scully Fox of Fuquay-Varina; three children, Judith Radcliffe and husband, Bruce of Cary, Cathy Bailey and husband, Kim of Cary, Jeffery Fox of Fuquay-Varina; brother, George Fox of Corry, PA; sister, Lolita Woodard of Corry, PA; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 1999 at Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church in Fuquay-Varina.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main St., Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526 or to First United Methodist Church of Union City, 42 East High St., Union City, PA 16438.

JAMES M. GORDON JR.
RALEIGH - James McCutchens Gordon of 7130 Shelburne, died Sunday, April 25, 1999. He was born in Sparta, GA May 15, 1922 son of Jasper M. and Nora Martin Gordon - moved to Charlotte, NC in 1934. From 1943-46 he was a navigator and bombardier with the Army Air Force. He graduated from Duke University in 1954 and was a management consultant in the health field until his retirement.
Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sparks Gordon; three sons, James M. Gordon III and wife, Janet of Greenville, Mark A. Gordon and wife, Suzy of Danbury, CT, John J. Gordon of Raleigh and daughters, Wanda Cole of Charlotte and Mary Ward and husband, John of London, England. His grandchildren are Carmel and husband, Chris Craft, James M. Gordon IV, Beth and Becca Gordon, and William Ward. He was predeceased by a grandson, John Jarvi. His brothers are Wyatt Gordon of Charlotte and Richard Gordon of Lexington, KY.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 Millbrook Rd., Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Ste 400, Raleigh, NC 27605 or The Alzheimer's Association for Research, 400 Oberlin Rd, Suite 208, Raleigh, NC 27605.
