RALEIGH - Mrs. Laura P. Wimberley, of 408 S. Bloodworth Street, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999 at First Baptist Church. Burial, Mount Hope Cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Mrs. Ruth W. Phillips of Willingboro, N.J.; sons, Mr. Richard E. Wimberley Jr. and Dr. William P. Wimberley, both of Raleigh; son-in-law, Mr. George Phillips of Willingboro, N.J.; daughters-in-law, Mrs. Natalie Wimberley and Mrs. Cliffornia Wimberley, both of Raleigh; a very special brother-in-law, Mr. Robert E. Hodge of Raleigh; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation from 1:30-2 p.m. prior to funeral service.

GERALDINE G. BARTSCH
Apr. 15, 1952 - Apr. 30, 1999
ANGIER - Geraldine Godek Bartsch, 47, of 105 Calvin St., died Friday at home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Donald Bartsch, loving daughter of Theodore and Esther (Slomiak) Godek of Chicopee, Ma. and dear sister of Marianne Godek Toomey and dear aunt of Marissa Toomey of Halliston, Ma.
She was born in Chicopee, Ma. and graduated from Chicopee High School in 1970. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University in 1974. For 10 years she was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance in La. and was Eastern District Manager for Liberty Insurance in North Carolina. She was self employed for 15 years. She owned Custom Bridals and Formals and The Elegant Equestrian (English and Western Riding Clothes). Her hobbies were sewing, gardening, dog handling, cross stiching and craft making. She was chairman of the Board of the International Siberian Husky Club. She owned two huskies, Tucker and Niki.
She received the last Rites of The Roman Catholic Church by Father Trent and he will conduct Masses for her in Dunn, N.C.
Memorial service 10 a.m. Monday, May 3, 1999, Bryan-Lee Chapel, by Rev. Stancil Baucom.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home.

ERIN J. CHAFFEE
RALEIGH - Erin Jean Chaffee, 16 who's name translates to peace, loving daughter of John and Debbie, little sis of Ryan, Matt, Jill and Jeff special niece and cousin, fun loving and giving friend and classmate, brilliant student, gifted dancer and joyful child of God, passed from us on Friday April 30, 1999.
Wispy bangs, dancer's legs disarming smile, ready laugh, this was Erin on the outside. Intelligent, introspective, sensitive, nurturing, fun loving, giving, warm humorous, charming are some of the traits that made Erin, Erin. Best reflected by her choice of friends and activities, she was the life of the group, the consummate teammate.
Erin attended Leesville Road High School and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was very active in her community, school, and church, having danced (Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, and Street) for 12 years. Erin was a yearbook editor in 11th grade, Yearbook Ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society Student Council, Choir, the Spanish Club, Spirit Committee, Shepherd's Quake, Teens Encounter Christ, HOPE, Youth Director search Committee, Senior High Servant Team and a church Youth Council Officer. She participated in Track and Field, Powder Puff Football, Crop Walk and MS Walk. She was a dance assistant, a tutor, and a Special Olympics Volunteer. Erin won 2 student choice awards, a US Academy Achievement Award and was nominated for a Morehead Scholarship. Erin chose to be an organ donor and helped save the lives of five others. All the lives she touched were enhanced as a result, and our community is a better place. We love you and we will miss you.
Surviving are her parents, John and Debbie Chaffee of Raleigh; brothers, Ryan of the home and Mathew of Decorah, Iowa; sister, Jill and husband Jeff Grober of Denver, Co.; maternal grandparents, Jean and Russ Seidel of Wyomissing, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Beatrice Dickieson of Sun City, Az.; four aunts; two uncles; ten very special cousins and her God-Parents, Barb and Dave Williams. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Carlton Chaffee.
The funeral service will be 6 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road, and will be officiated by Pastors David Sloop, Dave Keck, and Denny Brake. A private burial will be Tuesday morning.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Erin Chaffee Fund to support community youth activities. Mail donations in care of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27615.

MARGARET P. DRAKE
OCT. 31, 1911-MAY 1, 1999
ZEBULON - Margaret Peatross Drake, 87, of 9724 Dukes Lake Rd., died Saturday morning. She was the widow of Wesley Merriman Drake Sr. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late James and Mary Dughi Peatross. Graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh with Reverend W.C. Barham officiating.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Levy Heath of Zebulon; daughter-in-law, Leola Drake of Garner; grandchildren, Donna Rakestraw, John W. Helton, Penny Leon, Peggy Kubbo and David Drake; seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sons, Wesley M. Drake Jr. and Thomas Franklin Drake; granddaughter, Theresa Crotts.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
The family will receive friends at the home of Shirley and Levy Heath, 9724 Dukes Lake Rd., Zebulon.

THOMAS "DOUG" COUNCIL
CHAPEL HILL - Thomas "Doug" Council, 68, died on May 1, 1999 at UNC Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
He was native of Durham. He was the son of Edgar Lee and Tessie Scott Council. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University. Mr. Council was a member of the Temple Baptist Church. He was a founding member of the Tar Heel Sertoma Club which began in 1957. Doug has dedicated more than 40 years to the club. He has received the highest awards and honors in Sertoma. He was instrumental in the planning and developing of Camp Sertoma near hanging Rock State Park, NC. He was Camp Director for 12 years. He loved fishing from the mountains to the coast.
Doug is survived by his wife, Louise C. Council; daughters, Vickie Hilton and husband Reid, Suzan deSerres and husband, Mark, Kathy Smith and husband, Terry; seven grandchildren, Amanda deSerres, Jackson Smith, Jake Hilton, Lauren deSerres, Nathan and Michael Hilton, and Abby Smith; sister, Elizabeth C. Hawkins and husband, E.L. Hawkins from Durham, NC.
A memorial service will be held on May 4, 1999, 2 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, 807 W. Chapel Hill St., Durham, NC. A visitation is scheduled from 12:30-1:45 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to NC Camp Sertoma Fund, c/o Speech and Hearing Impaired, 237 Woodhaven Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

JOSEPH LOUIS EDER
DURHAM - Joseph Louis Eder, 73, of 3920 Swarthmore Road, died Friday, April 30th.
He was born and reared in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late John and Rosa Sammer Eder. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Ruth Lucas Eder and two brothers, George and John Eder of Maryland. Mr. Eder served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant, having served during the Korean Conflict and in the Vietname War. Following his retirement from the Army in 1968, he and his wife Ruth operated the Hope Valley Rest Home until 1983. Mr. Eder was a member of the Holy Infant Catholic Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Joni E. Burke of Chatham County; two sons, J. Blake Eder of Carrboro and Brian K. Eder of Cary; one sister, Mrs. Rose E. Doster of Nevada; and seven grandchildren.
Liturgy of the Lord's Resurrection will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Monday in Holy Infant Catholic Church. Officiating will be Fr. John McGee OSFS and Fr. Richard Cleary OSFS.
The family will receive friends at Holy Infant Catholic Church from 6:30-7 p.m. and following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King Pkwy., Durham, NC 27707 or the American Cancer Society, 11 S. Boylan Ave., Raleigh, NC 27603.

HUBERT E. JOHNSON
EBONY, VA - Hubert E. Johnson, 83, of Ebony, VA died April 30, 1999. He was a Greyhound bus driver for 50 years.
Survivors: wife, Elfreda Barker Johnson; two daughters, Mary Ann Johnson of Ebony and Barbara J. Barnes of Salisbury, NC; brother, Lynn B. Johnson of Raleigh, NC; three sisters, Pearl Londy and Annie Bell Boney of Raleigh, NC and Mary Wilkins of Shreveport, LA; four granddaughters, Leigh Clarke of Ebony, Kindra Clarke of Raleigh, NC, Laura Petersen of Frederick, MD, and Amy Engelson of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, Robert I. Barnes III of Wilmington, NC and Edwin D. Barnes of Salisbury, NC; great-granddaughter, Carolina Marie Petersen.
Services 11 a.m. Monday in Prospect United Methodist Church, Ebony, VA, with interment in Canaan Cemetery.
Visitation 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home, South Hill, VA.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ebony Volunteer Fire Department, Prospect U.M.C. or the Central Rescue Squad.

ELLEN S. JUBERG
DUNN - Mrs. Ellen S. Juberg, 73, died April 30, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. A native of Minneapolis, MN, she lived in San Diego, California until 1991 when she moved to Dunn.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church by Rev. Joseph Hester. Interment will be in the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at San Diego, CA at a later date.
She is survived by her husband: Jerry Juberg; son, Dr. Rick Juberg and his wife, Betty Ann of Erwin; daughter, Carol Hutto, and her husband, Randy of San Diego, CA; brother, Skartvedt of San Diego, CA; and five grandchildren, Betsy Juberg, Molly Juberg, Ryan Hutto, Eric Hutto and Laura Hutto.
The family will receive friends at their home at 1505 N. Ellis Avenue, Dunn, from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday evening.
The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 901 N. Park Avenue, Dunn, NC 28334.

NORMA JEAN DAVIS KING
FOREST CITY - Norma Jean Davis King, of Forest City, NC and formally of Kinston, NC died Friday, April 30, 1999. She was owner of Lakeside Mills. She was a member of The Pilot Club in Kinston and also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for many years. She was preceded in death by a sister Sylvia Ann Wood.
Funeral service 10 a.m. Monday, May 3, 1999 at Howard-Carter & Stroud Funeral Home, Kinston. Rev. Dexter Wasson officiating. Burial, Pinelawn Memorial Park, Kinston.
Surviving: spouse, Arthur H. King; daughters, Sharon Kirk, Susan Thompson; sons, Larry Graves, Aaron King, Bryan King, Kim King; sisters, Billie-Jo Churchwell; 13 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Howard-Carter & Stroud Funeral Home.

ORIE HERMAN PEARCE SR.
RALEIGH - Orie Herman Pearce, Sr., 92, of 417 Colleton Rd., died Friday, April 30, 1999. Mr. Pearce was born in Wake County. Prior to retirement Mr. Pearce was a conductor for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad and General Chairman of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He was a Mason and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. A son, Orie H. Pearce, Jr., preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are two granddaughters, Susan Pearce Benfield and Beth Pearce both of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline R. Pearce of Raleigh; cousins, Douglas Small and Walter Richardson, both of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening at the home of Jacqueline Pearce, 3221 Marie Dr., Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

MINNIE LEE SAULS
JAN. 1, 1912-APRIL 30, 1999
GARNER - Minnie Lee Lassiter Sauls, 87, of 601 Lakeside Drive, died Friday. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Elder Simeon J. Sauls.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Middle Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Fay and Ed Harrington of Graham, Edith and Stan Conyers of Garner, and Audrey and John Richardson of Garner; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, today, one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Conyers, 102 Pineway St., Garner.
Contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

LAURA WOOD WHITE
RALEIGH - Miss Laura Wood White, 85, of Barmettler Street, died Friday, April 30th. A lifelong resident of Raleigh, she is survived by her brother, Col. A. Wray White (Ret.), Terrance Park, OH and a niece, Catharine B. White of Skokie, IL.
She was employed as an administrator with Selective Service for the State of North Carolina. A memorial service will held 2 p.m. Monday, May 3, 1999 in the Chapel of The Annunciation, Christ Church. Memorials gifts may be made to Christ Church, P.O. Box 25778, Raleigh, NC 27611 or to a favorite charity.

CHARLES WILLIAM ELROD
RALEIGH - Charles William Elrod, 80 of 4213 W. Rowan Street died Tuesday at Bryan Center of Clayton. Mr. Elrod was a retired engineer with Benson Aircraft and was a World War II Air Force veteran.
Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Raleigh Memorial Park with Reverend David Wiseman officiating.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Ruth K. Elrod; daughters, Grace E. Murray and her husband Mac of Topsail Beach, Barbara E. Johnson and her husband Robert of St. Louis, MO, Sharleen E. Smith and her husband Shannon of Hickory and Nancy E. Britt and her husband Tom of Raleigh; brother, Howard Elrod of Chamberlain, South Dakota; sister, Marge E. Hedman of Lawrence, Kansas; grandchildren, Virginia Murray Mullins and her husband, James, Charles W. Murray and his wife Lynn, Robert M. Johnston, Christopher W. Johnston, Kimberly Smith Schearer and her husband Chris, James G. Smith, Amanda Britt Brantley, Charles C. Britt and Jonathan T. Britt; great-granddaughter, Brandi D. Brantley.
He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Thomas A. Brantley and a brother, Donald Elrod.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road (876-6900) from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday.
