WENDELL - Ronald "Ron" Dan Souther, 48, of 167 David Rd., died Tuesday morning at Rex Hospital after a long battle with ALS. He worked for 20 years with the City of Raleigh in the Sign and Marketing Dept. of DOT. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 25 at Wendell Baptist Church. Burial, Greenmount Cemetery.
Surviving wife, Gwen Edwards Souther; children, Shannon Black and husband, Steve of Enterprise, AL, Steve Andrews and wife, Tami of Wednell and Jonathan Andrews of the home; father, Raymond L. Souther of Rockingham; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Jim McClanathan of Maxton, Ann and Sean Fitz-Simon of Castle Hayne; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Betty Ann Souther of Bennettsville, SC; grandchildren, Heather, Adam, Megan, Sheridan and Anna Claire; several nieces and nephews.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to ALS Association, NC Chapter, 1301 N. Salem St., Apex, NC 27502.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell, other times at the home.

ELSIE DAUGHTRIDGE WEAVER
ROCKY MOUNT - Elsie Daughtridge Weaver, 88, died Monday, March 22, 1999. She was born in Nash County on October 29, 1910, daughter of the late John Levy and Mary Jane Joyner Daughtridge. She received her RN Degree from Parkview Hospital in 1934 and worked as a nurse for five years. She later joined her husband as a partner in Weaver Textile Company of Raleigh, where she resided for 38 years. She was a longtime member of Morton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Surviving husband of 64 years, Leon Cornell Weaver of Rocky Mount; daughter and son-in-law, Myrtle Weaver and James R. Talton, Jr. of Raleigh; grandson and wife, James R. III and Toni M. Talton of Raleigh; granddaughter and husband, Elizabeth Talton and Danny B. Johnson of Raleigh; three great-granddaughters; brother and sister-in-law, John Colon and Alice Berry Daughtridge; sister-in-law, Marie Joyner Daughtridge; three nieces and one nephew.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue with Rev. Mary Todd officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial may be made to Morton Memorial Presbyterian Church, 6605 West Mount Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.

ANNIE BARBOUR
RALEIGH - Evg. Annie Barbour, of 708 Coleman St., died Saturday. Graveside service 12 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Surviving: husband, Elder James Barbour of the home; daughters, Lolita Barbour of Raleigh; sons, James A. Barbour of Raleigh, Michael Thomas of Connecticut; mother, Sadie Mae Glover of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Cecelia Taylor and Kierra Barbour, both of Raleigh.

ROBERT H. DREW
RALEIGH - Robert Harold Drew, 86, of Duplin Road, died Tuesday. Born July 26, 1912 in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Harold Edward Drew and Katherine Green Drew. He attended Wayne University and was in the US Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He retired from the N.C. Employment Security Commission and was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances Huggins Drew; sisters, Betty Drew Flack of Clawson, Mich. and Vera Drew Smith of Farmington Hills, Mich. Two sisters preceded him in death, Mrs. Muriel Green and Mrs. Marion Hartz both of Mich.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 828-4311. Memorials may be made to SPCA of Wake County, 219-B Garner Business Court, Garner, NC 27529-4067.

RUTH E. "RUTHIE" HODSON
APEX - Ruth E. "Ruthie" Hodson, 56, of Apex, beloved wife, mother and friend who died January 31st in Gainesville, FL will have a memorial service held in her honor on the 26th of March, at 2 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Chapel, 511 W. Williams St. (Hwy. 55) in Apex. Her brother-in-law, Rev. Michael Hodson will officiate.
Surviving Ruthie's death are: husband, Ron; son, Todd; mother, Carmie Norvell; brothers, David and Willard Norvell; niece, Kristin Pell; nephew, Troy Norvell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Duke University Fibromyalgia Research...Ruth E. Hodson Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 90581, Durham, NC 27708.

NAN DELANY JOHNSON
RALEIGH - Nan Jeannette Delany Johnson, 77, of 3113 Charles E. Root Wynd, died March 21, 1999. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, St. Augustine's Chapel.
Surviving: brother, Lemuel T. Delany, Jr. and sister-in-law, Alma B. Delany; nieces, Ester M. Delany, Nan Delany Collins and Brandi Delany; nephews, Logan D. Delany, Jr. Brian Delany, Lemuel T. Delany, III, Roman Delany; special family friends, John Owen White, Sr. and Lula Watson; several grand-nieces and nephews.

JAMES M. JOHNSON SR.
PORTLAND, OR. - James Martin Johnson Sr., 88, died Friday, March 19, 1999 of congestive heart failure. He was born in Savannah, Ga. He was a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina from 1911-1948. He was the son of the James M. and Anna (Marsh) Johnson. He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1931 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. He was a Navy Lt. inWWII, commander in U.S. Naval Reserve and a government contract negotiator with the Navy Purchasing office in Los Angeles, Ca. He was a member of Tualation Plains Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: wife, Gertrude Smith Johnson; son, James M. Johnson Jr. of Warren, Or.; six grandchildren.
Disposition was by cremation.
Arrangements by Heritage Memorial.

ROBERT MORRIS MORGAN SR.
GARNER - Robert Morris Morgan, Sr., 77, of 3719 Woodside Road, died Monday at Wake Medical Center. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army serving his time in Italy and Germany.
Funeral 3:30 p.m. today, Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel, Raleigh. Family will receive friends and relatives from 3-3:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service other times at the home. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife, Premmie Finch Morgan; daughter, Norma Gayle Morgan of Matthews; sons, Robert M. Morgan Jr. of Raleigh, Mark S. Morgan of Beverly Hills, CA; grandchildren, Jeremy, Jenny, Shawntel, Michelle and Jessica; brother, Lee Morgan of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Reapa McDaniel of Garner.
Flowers are welcome or you may make a contribution to the Garner Senior Center, Inc., 205 E. Main St., Garner, NC 27529.

MARY L. MORRIS
RALEIGH - Mary Louise Morris, 75, of Raleigh died March 22, 1999, at her home. Mrs. Morris was a long time resident of Raleigh and a charter member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's St.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Charlie B. Morris of Raleigh; son, Charles Edward Morris and his wife Becky of Hayes, VA; daughter, Kay Morris and her long time companion Bill Lauder of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Jonathan Morris and Kimberly Morris of Hayes, VA; and sister Ann Anderson and her husband Floyd of Inverness, Miss.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, Saint Mary's St. The burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contribution's may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Rd. Raleigh NC 27608.

JAMES A. OAKES SR.
HOOKERTON - Mr. James Allen Oakes, Sr., 64, died Monday evening at Pitt County Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. James Oakes was the Manager of Harvey's Fluid Fertilizer, member of Hookerton United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Hookerton Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Taylor-Edwards Funeral Home in Snow Hill. Burial will follow in the Rainbow Cemetery.
Survivors include wife, Shirley Pittman Oakes of the home; a daughter, Darlene Oakes Manning of Trenton and her son, Rossie Manning, III and wife, Hillary of Graham; a son, James Allen Oakes Jr. and wife, Becky C. of Hookerton and their son, James Allen "Trey" Oakes, III of Hookerton; sisters, Lib Harrison of Snow Hill, Belle Boyles of Kinston, Inez Gurganus of Snow Hill and Mildred West of Greenville; brothers, Bennie Earl Oakes of Hookerton and Jesse Oakes of Snow Hill.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

RALEIGH - Nova Jeffries Sanders of Boston, Mass,formerly of Raleigh, died March 22, 1999.

DR. C. GREGG SINGER
SALISBURY - Dr. C. Gregg Singer, 88, Salisbury, North Carolina, died on Monday, March 22, 1999.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 26, 1999 at the First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Burial will be held at City Memorial Park in Salisbury.
Dr. Singer was born in Philadelphia and received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Haverford College, his masters and doctorate of philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate of divinity from the Atlanta School of Biblical Studies. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic society. During World War II, Dr. Singer was the director of the Illinois War Manpower Commission, and he later served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee investigating Pearl Harbor.
Dr. Singer was a professor at numerous colleges and universities, including Wheaton University, University of Pennsylvania, Salem College, Belhaven College, Montreat-Anderson College, Catawba College, Furman University, the Atlanta School of Biblical Studies, and the Young Life Graduate Institute. He was a noted speaker at academic and theological conferences, seminars and symposiums, and a sponsored lecturer of the Arthur B. DeMoss Foundation and the J. Howard Pew Foundation. For many years he was a commentator for various radio stations. Most recently, he was a professor of historical theology at the Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Dr. Singer received awards from many organizations for his teaching and academic excellence and his community service, and was honored through the years by the accomplishments, loyalty, love and respect of thousands of his students.
He was an ordained minister and served as the supply or visiting minister at over 200 churches in Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and North Carolina. He also served as a Chaplain at Rowan Regional Health Center and the Trinity Oaks Retirement Center.
During his academic and ministerial careers of over 60 years, Dr. Singer authored numerous books and served as co-author or contributing editor of numerous encyclopedias, compilations and other publications in the areas of United States history and politics, church history, theology and analyses of the works of John Calvin, Arnold Toynbee and Cornelius Van Til. His contributions to reformed theology and Presbyterian church history continue to be used in colleges and seminaries.
Dr. Singer is survived by his brother, Dr. Arthur G. Singer of Toccoa, Georgia; his children, Jean S. Satterwhite, Birmingham, Alabama, Richard G. Singer, Raleigh, North Carolina, Terri S. Speicher, Dallas, Texas, and Robert A. Singer, Greensboro, North Carolina; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a multitude of caring and loving friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie P. Singer. Over a lifetime of service Dr. Singer was a counselor to many and a friend to all. We will miss this good, kind and wise man and loving father.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, P.O. Box 690, Taylors, South Carolina 29687 or Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, North Carolina 27405.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 25th from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Summersett Funeral Home, West Innes Street, Salisbury.

JANE GIBBS SMITH
WASHINGTON - Mrs. Jane Gibbs Smith, 46, of 3046 Dartmouth Drive, Greenville, died at her home Monday, March 22, 1999. Funeral service will be held in the First United Methodist Church in Washington 11 a.m. Thursday conducted the Revs. Milton Mann and Polly Taylor. Burial will be on the Gibbs family plot in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Paul Funeral Home in Washington Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home at 3046 Dartmouth Drive in Greenville or at the home of her father, Milo L. Gibbs at 1210 N. Respess St., Washington.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mental Health Association or to the Humane Society in the community of donor's choice.
The body will be moved from Paul Funeral Home to the church one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Smith was born in Washington, March 5, 1953 the daughter of Milo L. Gibbs and the late Nell Beddard Gibbs. She attended the Washington City Schools and attended St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Greenville.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry A. Smith of Greenville; father, Milo L. Gibbs and her stepmother, Barbara Boyd Gibbs of Washington; sons, Robert S. Hackney of Chapel Hill and Stewart H. Hackney of Greenville; her brother, Milo L.Gibbs Jr. and his wife, Joan B. Gibbs of Wilson; a niece, Leslie A. Gibbs of Lillington; a nephew, Spencer E. Gibbs of Raleigh; stepbrother, Jay Clement of North Wilkesboro; stepsister, Kathy Clement of Winston-Salem.
Arrangements are by Paul Funeral Home, Washington, NC.

SHARON J. SOUTHERLAND
RALEIGH - Sharon Jean Southerland, 52, of Raleigh died Tuesday March 23, 1999, at her home.
A memorial service will be held Thursday 2:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road.
Mrs. Southerland is survived by her husband, Koy Southerland; son, Aaron Bare of Raleigh; daughters, Cherie Creech and her husband, Junior of Clayton and Kristen Isgitt and her husband, Jon of Willow Spring; parents, Wallace Pennington of Portland, Oregon and Hellen Higgins of Raleigh; brother, Wallace Pennington, Jr. and his wife, Glinda of Angier, Clarence Pennington and his wife, Denise of Battleground, Washington and Bob Higgins and his wife, Susan of Willow Spring; sisters, Rebekah Creech and her husband, Phillip of Willow Spring and Alice Williamson and her husband, Kim of Whiteville; grandchildren, Nathan Reeves of Clayton, Ashlyn Isgitt of Willow Spring and Rebekah Isgitt of Willow Spring and one unborn grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer Research, 1201 Walnut Street, 2nd Floor, Cary, NC 27511.

LINWOOD - Robert Leon Stokes, 82, of 1859 Clyde Fitzgerald Road, Linwood, NC, died March 22, 1999.
Funeral service 4 p.m. Thursday at Linwood United Methodist Church. Burial, Linwood United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Survivors: wife, Louise Hall Stokes of the home; daughters, Frances S. Breedlove of Raleigh, Joyce S. Parsons of Linwood, Sally Ann Stokes of Asheville.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
