DAVID J. TRAN
SILVER SPRINGS, MD - David Joseph Tran, 61, of Silver Springs, died Sunday after a short illness. He was a long time resident of Fayetteville, NC where he served in the military. For the past several years he has resided in the Washington, DC area.
He is survived by his son, David Reed Tran of Raleigh; former wife, Amy Garner Tran, also of Raleigh.
Murphy's Funeral Home of Falls Church, Virginia is in charge of arrangements. Service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday.
KENNEDY W. WARD
NEW BERN - Kennedy Wooten Ward died on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Craven Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Ward was born in New Bern on May 1, 1930, the fourth son of William Farrior Ward and Carrie Duffy Wooten Ward. He graduated from New Bern High School in 1948, attended Wake Forest College, now Wake Forest University, received the degree of Batchelor of Science in 1952, and his bachelor of Law degree in 1954, and subsequently, the degree of Juris Doctor. On August 7, 1954, Mr. Ward was admitted to practice as an Attorney and Counselor at Law and returned to New Bern to practice with his father, William F. Ward, and his brother, A.D. Ward, under the firm name of Ward and Ward, Attorney at Law. He later practiced as Kennedy W. Ward, P.A.
Mr. Ward also was admitted to practice in the United States Court of Claims, the United States Court of military Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
In 1956, he accepted an appointment as the Assisting General Counsel for the Education and Labor Committe in the United States House of Representatives, and served as both the Assisting General Counsel and the Acting General Counsel until July of 1958.
Mr. Ward was a member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the Third Judicial District Bar Association, and the North Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. He served as president of the Craven County Bar Association, as well as, President of the Third Judicial District Bar Association.
He was a member of the New Bern Junior Chamber of commerce and served as president of that organization. He was also a member of Civitan International, the Elks Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern.
Mr. Ward worked with the mentally and physically handicapped of this area and was a member of the Board of Directors of Craven Evaluation and Training Center for many years. He served as attorney for that organization on a voluntary basis.
On September 16, 1987, Mr. Ward was honored by the Board of Directors of Craven Evaluation and Training Center "For Sixteen Years of Faithful Service."
In 1990, Mr. Ward was honored by the New Bern Civitan Club, Inc, for 25 years membership and service. He had served as chairman of "Operation Santa Claus" for many years, a project which provided gifts to children in the Craven County area, through the Craven County Department of Social Services.
In 1993, Mr. Ward was honored with a "Lifetime Membership Award" from the New Bern Civic Theater, and organization he had represented on a voluntary basis for many years.
In October, 1998, Mr. Ward was one of two Civitan members to receive the Civitan of the Year Award from the New Bern Civitan Club.
Mr. Ward is survived by Audrey Peele Ward of Williamston, North Carolina, his daughter, Audrey Peele Ward, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who is serving as the Director of Communications for the UNC School of Law, his daughter, Dr. Virginia Wooten Ward, who is practicing medicine in Morristown, Tennessee, his brother, Alfred D. Ward, and William F. Ward, Jr., many nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.
The family will receive friends at Pollock-Wells and Best Funeral Home from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24th.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning at First Presbyterian Church, followed by interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

THOMAS M. COZART
EMERALD ISLE - Mr. Thomas Morris Cozart, 55, of 113 Tracy Drive, died on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Cozart was born in Greenville, the son of Vivian Morris Cozart and the late William Carlton Cozart.
His brother, Bill Cozart of Oxford, preceded him in death. He graduated from Junius H. Rose High School, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated from East Carolina University.
Mr. Cozart retired from IBM in December 1991 after 25 years of service. Mr. Cozart worked for Emerald Isle Realty as their managing broker for the last seven years. He was a member of theCarteret County Board of Realtors and was also a member of the Swansboro United Methodist Church. The Reverends Ray Broadwell and Allen Bingham will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 1999 at Swansboro United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Greenville at Greenwood Cemetery at 4 p.m.
In addition to his mother, Morris is survived by his wife, Sara Oakley Cozart of the home; son, Thomas Morris Cozart Jr. of New York City, NY; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Cozart of Cary; mother-in-law, Carrie Gray Oakley of Greenville; sister-in-law, June Hall Cozart of Oxford; brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Dr. Godfrey Porter Oakley and Mary Ann Bryant Oakley of Atlanta, Ga.; three nieces; two nephews.

DANIEL "WILLIE" ALLEN SR.
BELHAVEN - Mr. Daniel William "Willie" Allen Sr., 84, a resident of 322 Beech Ridge Rd., Belhaven, died Wednesday morning, June 2, 1999 at his home.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at Union Grove Church of Christ with Thelbert Leggett and Rupert Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife Nannie Allen of the home; four sons; Daniel William "Billy" Allen of Pantego, NC, Benjamin Allen of Newport News, VA, Gary Allen of Pittsboro, NC and Gregory Allen of Washington, NC; two stepdaughters, Jean Ellis of Farmville, NC and Linda Bowen of Ayden, NC; one sister, Fannie Harris of Pantego; two brothers, Leamon Allen of Pantego and Jasper Allen of Great Bridge, VA; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

H. A. "BUD" ALLRED JR.
DURHAM - Mr. H. A. "Bud" Allred, Jr., 79, of Durham, husband of the late Myrle Bass Allred, died Wednesday afternoon in Northwood Manor Nursing Center.
Mr. Allred was a native of Concord, NC. He moved to Durham in 1948 and worked as an auto salesman for several car dealers. Mr. Allred was a member of the Durham Civitans and School Boy Safety Patrol. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he belonged to the Julian S. Carr Sunday School Class.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. H. Gray Southern.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Reggie and Elizabeth Allred of Durham; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Harry Grubbs of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Peggy Smith of Pageland, SC and Mrs. Louise Glover of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday night at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.

EDWARD DePRIEST CLARK
WILMINGTON - Born May 24, 1928, in Wilmington, he was raised there and in Chadbourn, died May 30, 1999, at age 71. In 1993 he had retired from the faculty in English at North Carolina State University.
The deceased earned his undergraduate degree with distinction at North Carolina A&T State University, his MA from New York University, and his PhD from Syracuse University. After military service in the US Army, Dr. Clark taught in high schools and universities in Georgia and Louisiana. Prior to joining the faculty of North Carolina State University, he also taught at Fayetteville State University and served there as the chair of the English Department. He taught American, British, and World literature.
Dr. Clark's personal interest included team sports and the music of Sarah Vaughan and Leontyne Price. His former wife, Evangeline Merritt and their son, Edward preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at the Davie Street Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Cemetery in Wilmington at 3 p.m.

JUANITA J. CLAYTON
ASHEBORO - Juanita J. Clayton, 75, died May 26, 1999 after a lengthy illness at Greybrier Nursing Center, Trinity, NC.
Surviving: sons, Michael P. Clayton, Jr. of Raleigh, Francis A. Clayton of Greensboro; brother, Walter Robert James of Greensboro; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services were held May 27, 1999 at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.

BILLY E. CORN
SALEM, VA - Billy E. Corn, 64, formerly of Raleigh, NC, died Sat. May 29, 1999. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Bobby R. Corn; father, Fred C. Corn.
Surviving: mother, Ada H. Corn of Raleigh; sister, Eugenia C. Hunt of Durham. Also surviving are six children; 12 grandchildren.
Services were held in Roanoke, VA, Wednesday, June 2, 1999.
FRANK E. "F.E." ELLIS JR.
BRISTOL, TN - Frank Ernest (F.E.) Ellis, Jr., 76, of 101 Timber Oak Drive, Bristol, VA, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Funeral service was conducted 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 1999 in Akard Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mr. Ellis was a member and Deacon of McIver Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was the former owner of Bristol Dental Laboratory. Mr. Ellis was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Iris Barger Ellis; daughters, Mrs. Steve (Judy) Parrott of Raleigh, NC, Mrs. William (Janice) Rosenbaum of Bristol, VA; sisters, Hazel Snodgrass of Blountville, TN, Jewell Kyle and Ann Corrin, both of Bristol, TN. Also surviving are five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

FRANKLINTON - Johnny Bane Franklin, 60, of 11 Beechwood Road, died Wednesday. Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest. Burial will follow in the Youngsville Cemetery.

JAMES E. "J.E." HOGAN SR.
WINGATE - Mr. James Edward "J.E." Hogan, Sr., 84, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at Hospice House #2 of Union County. He was born Jan. 26, 1915 in Why Not, North Carolina, son of the late Mr. Walter Hogan and the late Mrs. Jeanette Britt Hogan. Mr. Hogan was the principal at Wingate High School for 17 years before it and Marshville and Union all Joined together to make Forest Hills High School and he became the first principal, and stayed for 18 years and retired from the North Carolina Public School System after 40 years, he was also a member of the Union County Retired Teachers Association at the time of his death, and had been a charter member of the Wingate Lions Club and was still a member of the Wingate Lions Club. While Principal at Wingate High School he was the first to have a lunch program and cafeteria for the students to eat in and also helped to establish the first driver's education class, in a Union County School to help teach students to drive.
Mr. Hogan is survived by his wife, Carmen Austin Hogan of Wingate; son, James Edward "Ed" Hogan Jr. of Lowesville; daughter, Martha Ann Hogan Isenberg of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Lauren Baines Hogan and Grace Austin Hogan, both of Lowesville; brother, Elton Hogan of Raleigh; sister, Gaynelle Hogan of Blacksburg, VA.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Allegra H. Patterson of Mamers.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at the Wingate Baptist Church in Wingate, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jim Somerville with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe.

ALMA WEST JONES
SMITHFIELD - Alma West Jones, 75, died Thursday morning at her home. She was the widow of A. G. Jones and was retired from the First Citizens Bank in Smithfield as the Corporate Secretary.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield with the Rev. John Causey to officiate. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery.
Surviving are her son, Andrew Graham Jones, Jr. of Chapel Hill; daughters, Annie Jones Searcy of Raleigh and Amelia Jones Feinberg of Katonah, NY; grandchildren, Evan Graeme Jones, Ashlan Suzanne Jones, Brian Dru Jones and David Landis Whitley and two very special children, Leigh Smith of Belhaven and Dan Smith of Charlotte.
