GABRIEL W. KEY
CARY - Mr. Gabriel Wayne Key, 26, son of Larry Wayne Key of Salisbury and Deborah Needham Key of Cary, passed away on June 1, 1999 at his residence in Cary. Mr. Key was a student at Wake Tech and an auto cad designer with T.A.E. Inc.
Gabriel is survived by: father, Larry Wayne and Nina Key of Salisbury; mother, Deborah Needham Key of Cary; brother, Jayme Key of Concord; paternal grandparents, Oliver Gabriel and Della May Stanley Key Jr. of Ararat; stepbrother, Jeremy Wilder of Clayton; special friends, Bradley King and Greg Orcutt.
Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at the chapel at The Cox-Needham Funeral Home by Rev. Jack Danley, Rev. David McCauley and the Rev. Bob Thomas. Interment will follow at the Cedar Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, June 4, 1999 from 7-9 p.m.
Family request memorials be sent to the S.P.C.A. 219-B Garner Business Center, Garner, NC 27529 or the N.C. Wildlife Endowment Fund, 512 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27604.
The Cox-Needham Funeral and Chapel, in Pilot Mountain, NC are in charge of funeral arrangements.

RICHARD SMITH LEE
RALEIGH - Richard Smith Lee, 77, of Raleigh died June 2, 1999. Mr. Lee is preceded in death by his brother, Willis M. Lee and his sister, Lottie Lane Furr.
A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Montlawn Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Athens Drive Baptist Church, 1601 Athens Drive, Raleigh. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Lee is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Jordan Lee; son, Richard Smith Lee, Jr. and his wife, Annette of Raleigh; grandchildren, Ben and Beth Lee of Raleigh; brother, Robert Earl Lee and his wife Betty of Charlottesville, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Athens Drive Baptist Church, Building Fund.

WILLARD FRANKLIN LEONARD
LOUISBURG - Willard Franklin Leonard, 80, of Centerville died Wednesday, June 2, 1999 in Duke Medical Center. He was a WWII veteran, a member of the James A. Johnson Masonic Lodge, and a dedicated member of Centerville Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday from the Centerville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Doris G. Leonard; daughter, Rose Leonard of the home; three sons, Herbert G. Leonard, Sr. and Michael W. Leonard, both of Centerville, and Tommy Leonard of Louisburg; three sisters, Mildred Ward of Centerville, Pat Kennedy of Louisburg, Barbara Jean Wrenn of Bethel, NC; five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lancaster Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Centerville Baptist Church Building Fund, 147 Dement-Aycock Lane, Louisburg, NC 27549.

LUTHER JONES MADDOX
GREENVILLE, SC - Luther Jones Maddox, 82, of 23 Charlbury Street, died June 3, 1999.
He is survived by Maude Murray Maddox, his wife of 59 years.
Mr. Maddox was born August 15, 1916 in Griffin, Georgia to the late William W. and Belle Jones Maddox.
He graduated from Furman University in 1938 and later did post graduate work at Emory and Harvard Universities.
Early in his career, he went to Greenwood High School in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he taught civics and business law and coached football and basketball teams.
Mr. Maddox entered the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company (now BellSouth) in the management college trainee program designed to provide a wide overview of company functions. His service was primarily in the Plant, Public Relations and Personnel Departments.
Through the years, he was promoted to increasingly responsible management positions in Raleigh, Asheville, Gastonia, Winston-Salem and Charlotte in North Carolina and in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a corporate Assistant Vice President in the Personnel Department in Atlanta when he retired.
He was a past President of the Dixie Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America at a time when that Chapter's jurisdiction covered the entire state of Georgia. He did much to help achieve the organization's goals of fellowship, loyalty, and service among telephone company employees.
He fulfilled his responsibilities of church membership faithfully and well. He was a member and past deacon at First Baptist Church of Greenville. While living in Atlanta, He was a deacon and Chairman of the Personnel Committee at Second Ponce DeLeon Baptist Church. Earlier he had served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons of Providence Baptist Church, Charlotte and Vice Chairman of the Board of Deacons of First Baptist Church in Asheville.
Mr. Maddox honorably served his country in the Pacific as a United States Naval Officer in World War II.
He lived a well-rounded life. He played football the four years he was at Furman and was awarded All-Southern distinction. He also lettered in basketball and track and was a member of the Block F. Lettermen's Club. He was student body secretary, as well as the Quarternion Leadership and Honor Fraternity president, and a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He was past president of both Charlotte and Atlanta alumni groups and served on the Furman Advisory Council for many years. Mr. Maddox was named The Furman Alumni Service Award winner in 1976 and was elected to the Paladin Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
He was dedicated to his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Diane Wyatt and her husband, Grady; a son, Thomas Luther Maddox and his wife, Beth; five grandchildren, Whitney Merck and her husband, Drew, Dorsey Wyatt, and Braxton, McKenzie, and Barret Maddox, all of Greenville; a niece, Jean Maddox Garner and her husband, Carlton of Gulf Shores, Alabama; and a sister-in-law, Alpha B. Maddox of Columbus, Georgia.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Henry Maddox.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at First Baptist Church of Greenville with Dr. Hardy Clemons and Dr. Baxter Wynn officiating. Entombment will be in Remembrance Mausoleum, Woodlawn Memorial Park, Greenville, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland St., Greenville, SC 29601 or to Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29625.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Friday at SSThe Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive.

THEADOCIA "DOCIA" MEARES
CARY - Theadocia "Docia" Meares, 92, of Cary, died June 2, 1999.
Mrs. Meares was an active member of First United Methodist church of Cary, where she taught Sunday school and participated in the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of The Order of The Eastern Star.
A funeral service will be held Friday 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Cary. The burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1-1:45 p.m. at the church.
Mrs. Meares is survived by her husband, John M. Meares Sr. of Cary; son, John M. Meares Jr. and his wife, Marguerite of Wake Forest; daughters, Etta Carol Meares of Cary and Ida Joyce Boddie of Roswell, Ga.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Music program, 117 S. Academy Street, Cary, NC.

PHILIP MURRAY
BLAIRSTOWN, NJ - A funeral Mass for Mr. Philip Murray, of Blairstown, NJ will be offered tomorrow in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, No. Arlington, NJ following services from the Condon Funeral Home, Kearny, NJ.
Mr. Murray, formerly of Chapel Hill, died on Tuesday in Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton, NJ. He was 73. He was employed as a sub-station operator for Public Service Electric and Gas Co. in Newark, NJ for 30 years until retiring in 1983.
Born in Scotland, Mr. Murray emigrated to Kearny in 1952 and lived there until moving to Chapel Hill 12 years ago. He returned to NJ and Blairstown 3 weeks ago.
He was a member of the Scots American Club in Kearny where he coached the youth soccer team for many years. Mr. Murray also coached the Kearny Town Soccer League and was a referee for the Kearny High School Soccer team.
During WWII Mr. Murray was a paratrooper with the British Paratrooper Regiment 82nd Airborne Division in England.
In February, Mr. Murray was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (nee Jamieson). Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Scocozza; three sons, Brian, Robert and David Murray; five sisters, Mary Neil, Betty Mitchell, Winnie McLaughlan, Jessie Varano and Pat Kolatac; a brother, John and seven grandchildren.

HILDEGARD KELLER ROBINSON
KNIGHTDALE - Hildegard Keller Robinson, 78, of 1540 Hodge Road, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999.
Memorial Graveside service 11 a.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at Raleigh National Cemetery.
Arrangements by L. Poole Funeral Service and Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545.

ALBERT H. RYALS JR.
ANGIER - Albert H. Ryals, Jr., 65, died Thursday, June 3, 1999. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Overby-Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.C. Wood officiating.
Surviving: daughter, Shela Sealey of Seattle, WA; sisters, Lois Thomas of Sanford, Lessie Lucas of Angier; brothers, LaVern and James Ryals, both of Angier, Edward Ryals of Broadway, Carl and Owen Ryals, both of Raleigh; grandchild, Dana Champion of Fuquay-Varina.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

PATRICIA HOUSE SMITH
HARKERS ISLAND - Patricia House Smith, 55, died Wednesday at Duke Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at the Rufuge Fellowship Church, where she was member, with the Revs. Manley Rose Jr. and Terry Estes officiating. Burial will follow in Carteret Memorial Gardens, Hwy 101, North of Beaufort.
Mrs. Smith is survived by husband, Nick F. Smith; daughters, Sharon Hill of Harkers Island, Angie Walther of Monroe, and Lisa Moore of Gloucester; son, Lee Dillard of Wilmington; sisters, Dolores Nelson of Atlantic, Becky Turner of Raleigh, and Judy Davenport of Harkers Island; brother, Richard House of Gloucester and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Harper and a sister, Alice Lefleur.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Church.

STUART P. VANDIVIERE
HILLSBOROUGH - Stuart P. Vandiviere, 67, died June 2, 1999 at his home after a seven year stand-off with cancer.
He was the son of the late Dr. Stuart Vandiviere and Mrs. Blanche A. Otto of Starke, Florida. He was born in Augusta, GA. He received a B.S. Degree and an M.S. Degree in English from Florida State University. He taught high school English in Florida and at Chapel Hill High School. After retiring from teaching, he operated a photography studio for several years and was a computer specialist at EPA when he died. His hobbies included photography, singing with his cheerful choir and with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Community Chorus.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Vandiviere; daughter, Lynn Vandiviere Winship and husband David; son, Mark Vandiviere and wife Susan; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5, 1999, 4 p.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church. It will be officiated by Rev. Gregg Hemmen and Rev. Chris Gambill. There will be a family visitation immediately following the service in the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1804 MLK Pkwy, Durham, NC 27707 or to Cane Creek Church Choir Fund, 6901 Orange Grove Rd., Hillsborough, NC 27278.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

INEZ HOLDEN PEEBLES
"To everything there is a season and a time for everything under the heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance".
RALEIGH - On Monday, March 22, 1999, Mrs. Inez Holden Peebles departed this earthly life to join that Caravan above. She was born May 16, 1920 in Wake County to the late Percell Holden and Henry Holden, Sr. Inez attended Flecher's Grove Elementary School and graduated from the Berry O'Kelly High School.
Inez was very active in various areas of employment and was well known throughout the Wake county and surrounding areas with employment as driver fo the "Book Mobile" with the Richard B. Harrison Public Library. She was also owner and manager of the Charcoal Flame Restaurant and Peebles Hotel and Grill. Mrs. Peebles also worked as Realtor and Property Manager in Raleigh and all of the surrounding counties.
At a early age she joined Baptist Grove Church where she remained a very faithful and active member until her death. Her contributions included, Chairman of the following auxiliaries: the Missionary Dept., the Senior Choir, the Usher Board, Group No. I, Deaconess & Deacon Wives and Floral Committee. Other contributions included member of the Audit Committee and in charge of the Food Service Dept.
Mrs. Peebles was a member of the Federation of Black Business Women, The Mary Talbot Women's Club and member of the Eta Phi Beta Sorority.
Mrs. Inez Peebles was married to Victor Peebles who preceded her in death. As we surrender her unto the Heavenly Father, we are thankful for the years we shared with her. Those who remain to cherish her love and memories are: daughter, Dr. Janet Peebles Gamble McLin; son-in-law, Mr. Floyd McLin; foster son, Horace Murray; daughter-in-law, Gloria Murray; brother, Deacon Henry Holden; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
"The Lord giveth and the Lord hath taken away, Blessed be the name of the Lord".

AUSTIN JOSEPH SIMPSON
CARY - Austin J. Simpson, 67, of Cary, died Tuesday at Rex Hospital.
He was born in Houston, TX, received his education at Belmont Abbey College, Queen's College where he received his batchelor of Arts Degree and receiving his Master of Education degree at Duke University. He has taught English and Social Studies, coached basketball and track and field. He served 10 years as principal of three Junior High Schools and two years as headmaster of a private school. Until his retirement in 1990 he served as an educational consultant for planning and for accreditation in the NC Department of Public Instruction. He was a poet, an avid coin and stamp collector; loved to play the piano for relaxation and has composed many tunes.
Surviving: his wife, Lena Lewis Simpson; two daughters, Sara S. Worsham and husband, Jerry of Willow Park, TX, Linda S. Peterson and husband, Eric of Rocky Mount; one sister, Sue Ellen Reid and husband, Pat of Conroe, TX; two grand children, Cindy and Amy Worsham of Willow Park, TX.
Funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Burial will be in Markham Memorial Gardens in Durham.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
To daddy-the soul takes flight to the world that is invisible, but there arriving, he is sure of bliss and forever dwells in paradise. We love you, Sara Lee and Linda.
Flowers are acceptable and those wishing to make memorial contributions can do so to the Rex Cancer Center, 4420 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607.
