CHAPEL HILL - Mrs. Jean Bullard Gove Alexander, 81, of 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, of Carol Woods Retirement Home, died Tuesday. She attended Fayetteville City Schools, and UNC at Greensboro. She was a member of the Lutheran Church (Holy Trinity) of Chapel Hill. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday at Rogers & Breece Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Allen F. Page officiating. Burial, Cross Creek #3.
Visitation, one hour prior to service at Rogers & Breece Funeral Home.
Surviving: two sons, John R. Gove III of Upper Crystal Creek, Australia, R. Paul Gove of Hillsborough; one brother, Bern F. Bullard Sr. of Raleigh; four grandchildren; numerous number of nieces and nephews.

SCARLET SUSAN MATTHEWS BASS
SPRING HOPE - Scarlet Susan Matthews Bass, 38, of 1929 North NC 58, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at Nash General Hospital.
Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday from the chapel of Spring Hope Funeral Home by Rev. Paul Tolbert. Interment will follow in Peachtree Baptist Church Cemetery.
Susan was a member of Peachtree Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Glenn Bass of Spring Hope; mother, Vallie Rose Matthews of Spring Hope; daughter, Heather Lynn Bass of the home; son, Joseph Glenn Bass Jr. of the home; brother, James Farmer Matthews of Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends at the Spring Hope Funeral Home, Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m.; and other times at the home of Jo and Shirley Bass, 1543 N, NC 581.

CHARLES L. BROWNFIELD
RALEIGH - Charles Leslie Brownfield, 86, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999.
Mr. Brownfield was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Leslie W. and Lola B. Brownfield. Mr. Brownfiled was manager of Boylan Pearce retail store for twenty years.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Friday in Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Rd. Burial will follow in Richmond, Virginia at a later date.
Surviving are his wife, Lelia K. Brownfield of the home; son, Charles L. Brownfield Jr. of Raleigh; sister, Alicia Montgomery of PA; two grandchildren, Chris and Katherine Brownfield, both of Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Wake County Unit, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.

MATTHEW A. COOPER
WAKE FOREST - Matthew Aaron Cooper, 14 month's of 123 Abercrombie Rd., died Tuesday at Wake Medical Center, in Raleigh.
A funeral, and celebration of life service will be held 6:30 p.m. today at Faith Baptist Church in Youngsville.
Surviving is his parents, Aubrey and Danica Cooper; a brother, Zack Cooper of the home; grandparents, Wayneand Joyce Simon of Laurel, Mississippi and Aubrey and Carol Cooper Sr., of Laurel Mississippi, uncle's and aunt's Brandon Simon of Laurel Mississippi, Mike and Cindy Collins of Laurel Mississippi, Eric and Jenny Cooper of Brigdon Michigan.
Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions can be made to the Faith Baptist Church, Pre-School Fund, 249 Holden Road, Youngsville, N.C. 27596.

MARGARET KELLY CORBETT
CHAPEL HILL - Margaret Kelly Corbett, mother of UNC President Molly Corbett Broad, died today at the age of 94 after an extended period of declining health. She had been a resident at Carolina House in Chapel Hill since 1997.
Born March 15, 1905, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Mrs. Corbett attended Stroudsburg State Teachers College and had an early career as a teacher in the Wilkes-Barre public schools. In 1936, she married Stanley A. Corbett, also a public school teacher, who died in 1960. Following Mr. Corbett's death, she returned to teaching in the Rome, NY, public schools, retiring in 1970. Since that time, she has lived with or near President Broad and her family in Syracuse, NY, Phoenix, AZ, Long Beach, CA, and Chapel Hill. Throughout much of her retirement, she was an active volunteer in local schools and public libraries.
Mrs. Corbett is survived by four children; Luke D. Corbett of Harrisburg, PA, Stanley A. Corbett and his wife, Eileen of St. Louis, MO, Molly Corbett Broad and her husband, Robert of Chapel Hill, and Sheila A. Gillert and her husband, Eric of Buffalo, NY. She also is survived by nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are being handled by Walker Funeral Home of Chapel Hill. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 26, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St., Chapel Hill. Burial services will follow the next day at St. Mary's Cemetery in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Newman Catholic Student Center at UNC-Chapel Hill (218 Pittsboro St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516) or to the charity of one's choice.

JACQUELINE SMITH DOWDY
RALEIGH - Jacqueline Smith Dowdy, 57, passed away Wednesday, March 24, after a lengthy and courageous battle against ovarian cancer. A Registered Nurse at Dorothea Dix Hospital, she was a 1960 graduate of New Bern High School and a 1963 graduate of the Watts School of Nursing.
She is survived by her husband William F. Dowdy; son Bryan Dowdy of Wake Forest; daughter, Michele Dowdy of Raleigh; brother, Raymond Smith of New Bern; and mother, Martha Smith of Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the North Raleigh Funeral Home Chapel, 7615 Six Forks Road, and entombment will be at the Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 25th at the North Raleigh Funeral Home 870-5123.

LORENA STILLMAN FARABOW
RALEIGH - Mrs. Lorena Stillman Farabow, 92, of Raleigh, NC, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in the Springmoor Retirement Community.
Mrs. Farabow was born in Plymouth, NC, on December 12, 1906, the daughter of the late Merchant John and Amelia Frances Bateman Stillman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gad Evis Farabow.
Surviving are a beloved niece, Eunice Holliday Morgan of Raleigh, NC and several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 26, 1999 in the Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC, by Rev. Phyllis Mayo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greystone Baptist Church, 7509 Leadmine Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615.

J. GARLAND HUFF
FEB. 6, 1918 - MAR. 24, 1999
WILLOW SPRING - John Garland Huff, 81, of 7836 Huff Farm Road, a retired farmer, died Wednesday. He was a longtime member and Deacon at Hilltop Free Will Baptist Church.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday at Hilltop Free Will Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Mary Matthews Huff; daughters, and sons-in-law, Sue H. Carroll and Steve Carroll of Raleigh and Lou H. Green and Len Green of Willow Spring; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry G. Huff and Ann Huff of Willow Spring, Larry D. Huff and Brenda Huff of Raleigh, and Billy D. Huff and Donna Huff of Garner; brothers, Russell Huff of Sacramento, CA, and Rudolph Huff of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Visitation from 7-9 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

JOSEPH "ROY" LEE
BRONX, NY - Mr. Joseph "Roy" Lee, born March 17, 1919, formerly of Raleigh, NC, died Sunday March 21, 1999 at Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, NY.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Lee; five daughters, Olivia, Joann, Violet, Tina and Hope, all of New York; two sons, Ernest Lee of Raleigh, NC, Yusuf "Buddy" Lee of New York; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grands.
He was preceded in death by a son, Van Allen.
Funeral 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Unity Funeral Home, 2352 Fredrick Douglas Blvd., Harlem, NY.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HAZEL R. MAYES
ROANOKE, VA - Hazel Elizabeth Rice Mayes died on March 23, 1999 at South Roanoke Nursing Home. She was born on February 18, 1916 in Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of Professor Martin E. and Hazel Hope MacGregor Rice. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Kansas in 1936, where she belonged to the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, she completed an M.A. in German at the University of Illinois one year later. She was married to the late Morris E. Mayes, who was retired from the Norfolk and Western Railway.
Mrs. Mayes is survived by her sister, Cynthia R. (and Forrest W.) Frease of Greeley, Colorado; three daughters, Katharyn H. (and Gordon W.) Thayer of Morehead City, NC, Janet E. (and Kenneth E.) Flood of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Sharon V. Mayes (and Charles H. Ware) of Clearwater, Florida; three grandchildren, Ronald G. (and Kikki D.) Thayer of Mount Pleasant, SC, Victoria E. Flood of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, and Megan C. (and Matthew K.) Guard of Wake Forest, NC; one great-granddauaghter, Kyle MacKenzie Thayer of Mount Pleasant, SC; and one nephew, J. Michael (and Paula) Frease of Estes Park, Colorado.
Mrs. Mayes was with H & R Block for 18 years, where she became a supervisor and worked for the Executive Tax Service. An accomplished pianist, she belonged to the Thursday Morning Music Club. She was former Treasurer and a current member of the General James Breckinridge Chapter of the DAR. She was a long time member of the American Association of University Women where she held many positions of leadership including President and Treasurer. Mrs. Mayes also delivered Meals on Wheels for 17 years. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke.
Cremation will take place at Oakey's Funeral Chapel. Ashes will be interred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas.
A Memorial Service led by the Rev. Kirk Ballin will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 1999.

CONSTANCE D. "CONNIE" MEDDERS
LOUISBURG - Constance Delancy "Connie" Medders, 67, of 125 Jeffress Dr., died Wednesday at Rex Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was affectionately known as Connie to her friends and Miss Muffet to her five grandchildren. She was born in Reidsville, NC and grew up in Chapel Hill, NC where she graduated from UNC in 1953. She lived in Louisburg with her husband, Dr. Doyle Medders since 1962. Miss Muffet was much loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday from the Louisburg Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Larry Williams. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill.
Surviving in addition to her husband are: daughter and son-in-law, Landis St. George and husband Blane of Greensboro; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. R. Glen Medders and wife Kathy of Raleigh; sister, June Allred; five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lancaster Funeral Home.
Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Rex Cancer Center, 4420 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607 or Louisburg Baptist Church, 302 N. Main St., Louisburg, NC 27549.

MARY LOUISE MORRIS
RALEIGH - A funeral service for Mary Louis Morris, 75, of Raleigh who died March 22, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home chapel, Saint Mary's St. The burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.

BURNICE L. PENNY JR.
EDENTON - Burnice Lee Penny, Jr. 77, of the 100 block of Robin Lane died in the Chowan Hospital Wednesday, March 24, 1999. A native of Johnston County, NC, Mr. Penny was the husband of Shirley Hardee Penny and the son of the late Estelle Stevens and Burnice Lee Penny, Sr. Mr. Penny was a self-employed logging contractor and a member of the Edenton Baptist Church.
Surviving other than his wife is his son Eddie B. Penny of Edenton, NC; two daughters, Patsy P. Cobb and her husband Richard of Collinsville, VA and Brenda P. Richardson of New Bern, NC; two brothers, Linwood Penny of Raleigh, NC and A. C. Penny of Clayton, NC; a sister, Nan Penny of Clayton, NC; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Penny was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Snead, and a brother, Jack Penny.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday in the Edenton Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Pridgen and Rev. Wayne Proctor officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Evans Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday evening and at other times at the residence.
Memorials may be made to the Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC.
The Evans Funeral Home of Edenton is serving the Penny family.

ROBERT W. RAWLS
ROCKY MOUNT - Robert Watson Rawls, 75, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999. Mr. Rawls was born on January 3, 1924 in Rocky Mount, son of the late William Alec Rawls, Sr., native of Bertie County and Lessie Poole Rawls, native of Vance County. He graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High where he served as president of his senior class. After serving in the US Army Air Corps for three years, he joined the family business and was an owner and operator of Alec Rawls Wrecking Company, Inc. for 36 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Willcox Rawls; two daughters and their husbands, Lee Rawls Dickinson and Steven R. Dickinson of Greenville, SC, and Debra Rawls Smathers and Joseph F. Smathers, Jr. of Raleigh, NC; brother, William Alex Rawls, Jr. of Rocky Mount.
He was predeceased by son-in-law, D. A. "Woody" Brown of Rocky Mount.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. William Grisham officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 1-2 p.m. prior to the service and other times at the home, 3412 Winstead Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
