JAMES A. HOPPES
RALEIGH - James Allen Hoppes, died May 4, 1999. Born March 5, 1940 in New Castle, IN. Jim was a gentle, loving father and husband. He was a veteran of the Air Force and active in the American Legion in Kettering, OH, where he served as Post Commander and made many life-long friends.
Visitation will be held noon Friday followed by a 1 p.m. Mass of Resurrection, both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Leesville, Rd., Raleigh.
James is survived by his wife, Paula; their children, Debbie Hoppes, Vicky Hacker, Maria Schadbach, Dawn Griffin, David Sharp, Dennis Holderman and six grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Wake County.

HAROLD BROOKS LEE
GOLDSBORO - Harold Brooks Lee, 50, former deputy sheriff in Wayne Co., died Tuesday, May 4, 1999. Funeral service 2 p.m. Thursday, Seymour Funeral Home. Burial, Pikeville Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Vicky Price Lee; daughter, Jana Lee Barfield and son-in-law, Bobby of Goldsboro; son, Christopher Brooks Lee of the home; three grandchildren; sister, Joye Carol Lee Morgan and husband, Richard of Cary.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Elton and Irene Blow Lee of Goldsboro.

NELLIE DAVIS MORGAN
FARMVILLE - Mrs. Nellie Davis Morgan, 86, of 5822 Barrett Road, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. from the Church Street Chapel of the Farmville Funeral Home by Rev. Julius Whitley and Rev. Jim Ellis. Interment will follow in Good News Advent Christian Church Cemetery near Saratoga.
Mrs. Morgan was a member of Good New Advent Christian Church and was librarian for the Town of Fountain.
She is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Young of Raleigh; five sons, David M. Morgan of Raleigh, Roland Morgan and Raymond Morgan, both of Tarboro, Marvin Jasper Morgan Jr. of Jefferson, Wisconsin, and William T. Morgan of Arlington, Texas; nineteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren: two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Farmville Funeral Home, Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the home.

ARLINE A. PIERCE
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Arline Alston Pierce, 96, died Saturday, May 1, 1999 at her home. She was the widow of John Thomas Pierce and a resident of Newport News for 67 years. She was a native of Nash County, NC.
Mrs. Pierce was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Florence Malm Circle and Trinity Guild.
Her survivors include her daughter, Bernice A. Pierce of Newport News; sister, Camilla Moore of Hollister, NC; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Jeanette Thomas and Irvene Sency.
A graveside service was conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Peninsula Memorial Park, by the Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Bosserman. A service of remembrance was held at 3:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church where a reception followed.
The family received friends at 308 Longwood Drive.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 6812 River Road, Newport News, VA 23607.

RETHA JOHNSON PIERCE
GOLDSBORO - Retha Johnson Pierce, 80, of 339 Combs Road, died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
A native of Pitt County, she was the daughter of the late Will J. and Canary Murphy Johnson and was the widow of Linwood Earl "Leon" Pierce. She was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. from Seymour Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
She is survived by sons, James Robert Pierce and Donnie Earl Pierce both of Goldsboro, Jackie Paul Pierce of Wilson, Thomas Leon Pierce of Morrisville and Wayne Johnson Pierce of Knightdale; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Seymour Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. and other times at the residence.

HAZEL B. CRAWFORD
RALEIGH - Hazel Daphne Brookshire Crawford, formerly residing at 719 Beaver Dam Road, died Monday, April 5 at Rex Convalescent Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Edenton Street United Methodist Church, with visitation of family and friends afterward. (Memorial contributions in memory of her can be made to the Mission ministries of Edenton Street United Methodist Church.)
Hazel was born on May 14, 1911 in the town of Troutman in Iredell County. She was the daughter of James Caldwell Brookshire and Effie Perry Brookshire and was one of eight children. She received her education in the schools of Troutman and Greensboro College (where she was the youngest member of of her freshman class).
On July 16, 1931 she married John William Crawford (also of Iredell County). He was later employed in Raleigh by the Agricultural Extension Service of North Carolina State College and concluded his career as Director of Community and Area Development for North Carolina State University. Afterward they traveled in Europe, Russia, the Orient and the states. He died in 1981.
For over half a century she was a loyal and dedicated member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church and its Fidelis Adult Sunday School Class, the Women's Society of Christian Service and the United Methodist Women. She also served in many local, district and conference office capacities, such as with the Board of Missions and the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church.
During most of her life, Hazel was actively involved in many and diverse civic activities, on local, state and national levels. This included her three-year term as President of the North Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers in the mid-fifties, at which time she helped to strengthen the philosophical and legal positions that all of the state's public schools should be for all its students. In 1963 she was one of two women in the state invited by President John F. Kennedy to attend a special White House meeting to discuss possible solutions to the racial problems. Appointments made by governors which she received included that of her being a North Carolina delegate to attend a White House Education Conference. During her voluntary civic career she had been made an Honorary Life Member of the Raleigh Parent-Teacher Council, a Life Member of the N.C. Congress of Parents and Teachers, a Life Member of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. She (as a lay person) was conferred an Honorary Membership into Delta Kappa Gamma. Other honors included: her being named by the News and Observer as its "Tar Heel of the Week" and her inclusions in North Carolina Lives (1962) by William S. Powell.
Other interests of Hazel have included: growing many varieties of interior and exterior plants, designing and making clothes, collecting milkglass and collecting hats.
Surviving: daughters, Margaret Crawford of Raleigh, Joan Crawford Reeves of Winston-Salem; granddaughters, Margaret Reeves Bray of Charlotte, Barbara Reeves Elmore of Birmingham, AL; great-granddaughter, Brooke Elmore of Birmingham, AL; great-grandsons, Christopher and Cameron Bray, both of Charlotte.

RICHARD LEE CURRIN SR.
ANGIER - Richard Lee Currin , Sr., 79, a retired farmer and a native of Angier, died April 6, 1999. He was the son of the late E.M. and Evie Ann Sherman Currin, he was a veteran of WWII. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, Overby-Johnson Funeral Home chapel with Brother Mack Fowler officiating. Burial, Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Rt. 2, Angier.
Surviving: wife, Martha Ingle Currin; daughters, Pinky Johnson and husband, David of Angier; sons, Mitchell Currin and Rick Currin, both of Angier; sisters, Edna Pepoon of Raleigh, Eugenia Earp of Angier, Ophelia Lance of Fayetteville; brother, Billy Ray Currin of Fuquay-Varina; one granddaughter, Julee Johnson.
Family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

CHRISTINE FRANKS FOWLER
RALEIGH - Christine Franks Fowler, 76, of 6912 Penny Rd., died Tuesday at Rex Hospital. She was the retired president of MHF Corporation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maylon H. Fowler and her brother, Walter Ray Franks.
Funeral 11 a.m. Friday, Catawba Springs Christian Church. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation of family and friends 6:30-9 p.m. today, Montlawn Funeral Home, Raleigh. Family will be at the residence at all other times.
She is survived by sons, Steve W. Fowler and wife, Beth of Cary, Robert H. Fowler of Raleigh, Dennis L. Fowler and wife, Saralyn of Raleigh, Ronnie W. Fowler and Ricky E. Fowler, both of Cary; three grandchildren, Maylon-James and Bobby Fowler, Hannah Fowler; brothers, Sherwood Franks, Cary Franks, Paul Franks and Earl Franks; sister, Pauline Franks.
A special thanks to all friends and family and Rex Health-Care for the attention and love given in her time of sickness.

WILBURN A. REYNOLDS
SEPT. 13, 1914 - APRIL 6, 1999
RALEIGH - Wilburn Altamont Reynolds, 84, of Raleigh, died April 6, 1999 at Raleigh Community Hospital after a difficult battle with Lung Cancer.
Mr. Reynolds was the son of the late Altamont Melnot Reynolds and Bertha Lorena Dennis Reynolds of Lamar, SC. Mr. Reynolds served in World War II in the U.S. Air Force, 4th Squadron, Boling Field, Washington, DC. He retired as Regional Manager of Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. He was a devoted father and will be missed greatly.
Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Catherine Shively Reynolds of Raleigh and his son, Thomas Dennis Reynolds of St. Simons Island, CA.
A memorial service will be held Friday 11 a.m. at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in the Joseph G. Brown Chapel.
Mr. Reynolds is survived by his daughter, Anne Shively Reynolds Hawkins and son-in-law, John E. Hawkins Jr. of Raleigh; sons, Douglas Stouffer Reynolds of Tampa, FL., and David Lanceon Reynolds of Raleigh; grandchildren, Brandon Altman Reynolds and Allyson Shively Reynolds of St. Simons Island, GA.
He is also survived by his sister, Helen Reynolds Groetzinger and brother-in-law, Tom Groetzinger of Columbia, SC; brothers, Harold Reynolds and sister-in-law, Alice Reynolds of Columbia, SC and B.K. (Kirk) Reynolds and sister-in-law, Barbara Reynolds of Newland, N.C.; also numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the home of John and Anne Hawkins.

MARY WATSON
WARRENTON - Mrs. Mary Watson, 84, of Warrenton, died Sunday at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. She was a native of Warren County, and was the widow of the late Marion King Watson, and she was a retired cafeteria employee of the Warren County School system. Funeral service will be held on 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Baptist Church. Officiated by Rev. Eddie Lawrence. Burial will be in Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Watson is survived by one son, Haywood Luis Watson of Albany, NY; seven daughters, Mildred Lindsay and Mary L. Shark, both of Albany, NY, Eleanor B. Watson of Bronx, NY, Emma Watson of Washington, DC, Florine Davis of Warrenton, and Viola Bullock and Hazel Chavis both of Raleigh.
The body will lie in state from noon until the time of the service on Saturday.
Family will be at the home of Viola Bullock, 2912 Gladstone Drive, Raleigh, NC.

JEAN DAUGHTRY WOODALL
MARCH 29, 1933 - APRIL 6, 1999
GARNER - Jean Daughtry Woodall, 66, died Tuesday at Duke Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Tiney and Irene Daughtry of Clayton. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bryan-Lee Funeral chapel in Garner. Burial will follow in the Amelia United Church of Christ Cemetery in Clayton.
Mrs. Woodall began her career with the Raleigh Times and The News and Observer Publishing Co. where she retired after 20 years. She was active in Democratic Party campaigning during the 1960's and 1970's. She also appeared in regional public service commercials and documentary films that were used for educational purposes. In 1985 she joined N.C. Farm Bureau where she retired after 10 years of service. Recently Mrs. Woodall's most rewarding work had been with the Garner Senior Center and the Town of Garner.
Surviving to cherish her loving memory are four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Tere Woodall of Angier, Randy and Bambra Woodall of Liberty, SC, Kevin and Wanda Woodall of Angier, Johnny and Patty Woodall of Garner, and cherished friend Crann Smith. Grandchildren are Jacob, Nina Meghan-Joy, Colin, Jason, Nicole, Aaron, Nathan and Anita, Brandy and Samantha. Special family includes Kym, Sheldon and Ian Ward, Danny and Teresa Parrish, Troy and Dee Smith. Sisters, Doris Watson and husband William of Knightdale, Ruth Dupree and husband, Alex of Garner, brothers, Leon Daughtry and friend, Sherry Braswell, Billy and wife, Margaret Daughtry, all of Clayton.
The family will receive friends at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner on Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at 7808 Trudy Lane, Garner.

ESTHER "TESS" ARNOLD
GREENVILLE - Mrs. Esther Gislason "Tess Arnold, 78, of 2901 Sussex Street, died Thursday, April 1, 1999 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Arnold was a retired state social worker born in Grand Forks, N.D. She was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. G. John Gislason; graduate of the University of North Dakota; member of Alpha Phi Sorority; lived in Kinston from 1951-1985 and was married to the late Dr. Jesse Hoyt Arnold II; member of the Thalian Book Club and attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville, where she was a member of the Alter Guild.
Graveside service was held Saturday, April 3, 1999 from Westview Cemetery in Kinston. The Rev. Tom Midgette officiated.
A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville, NC.
She is survived by brother, Dr. Paul Gislason of Mankato, Minn.; one son, Jesse Hoyt Arnold III of Easton, Maryland; two daughters, Dina Arnold Holton of Oriental, Kathy Arnold Taft of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Jessica Andres Gorall of Charlotte, Paige Pressly Fuqua, Thomas Fleming Taft, Jonathan Gudmund Taft and Courtney Marie Wilson, all of Greenville, Cameron Barnes Wilson and Dina Camille Wilson of Oriental, Jesse Hoyt Arnold IV of Frederick, Maryland; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Taylor Gorall and Banjamin Warren Gorall, both of Charlotte.

KILL DEVIL HILLS - Frances Kerns Baer, 84, of Kill Devil Hills, died Easter Sunday, April 4, 1999.
A graveside funeral service is planned for 3 p.m. Friday, April 9, at Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, Md.
A memorial service is to be held at St. Andrews-by-The-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, N.C. at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18. All friends are invited to attend both services.
