MARIANNA S. SCHMELZEIS
FLUSHING, NEW YORK - Marianna S. "Mae" Schmelzeis, age 90, of 141-16 25th Rd., Flushing, NY, died late Friday evening, April 23rd, at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary, NC. She experienced declining health shortly after her arrival to Cary in December of 1998. "Mae" was adored by family and friends alike, and was known for her genuine interest in people ...always putting the concerns of others ahead of herself. She had a keen mind, a wonderful sense of humor and a loving heart. She was loved.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 27th at 2:00 p.m. in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel, 511 W. Williams St. (Hwy. 55) in Apex. Rev. John Nagle will officiate.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Apex Funeral Home. Graveside committal and burial will be on Thursday, April 29th at 2:00 p.m. in the Long Island National Cemetery, 2040 Wellwood Ave., Farmingdale, NY 11735.
Surviving are a son, Joseph P. Schmelzeis & wife Dorothy of Cary; a brother, Julian Radzik of New York, NY and three grandchildren, Joseph P. Schmelzeis, Jr., Mary Catherine Houts, and John Paul Schmelzeis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Cary Woman's Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 918, Cary, NC 27512.

LUCIELLE OLIVER STOKES
WILMINGTON - Ms. Lucielle Oliver Stokes of Wilmington, NC died Thursday, April 22, 1999 at the Raleigh Re-hab Center.
She was born January 5, 1926 in Savannah, Georgia, the daughter of the late Joe Oliver and Freda Rhaulerson Nettles.
When her family first moved to Wilmington in the 1960's, Ms. Stokes was a member of Seashore Baptist Church at Wrightsville Beach and later a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church in Wilmington. She was a graduate of Columbia Business College and served as office manager for the Wilmington Baptist Association for many years prior to her employment as office manager for the city of Wilmington for which she worked until her retirement.
She was a true Christian lady, and a caring, loving mother sacrificing many things for her children, family, and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Meredith Williams of Raleigh, NC; her son, Joe Noble and wife, Susanne of Hampstead, NC; an adored granddaughter, Sarah Beard of Raleigh, NC; a favorite niece, Portia Lloyd and husband, Freddie of South Carolina; and a favorite nephew, James Royal and wife, Tina of South Carolina.
Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, 1999 at Sea Lawn Memorial Park by Rev. Danny Hawkins.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, MD 20850.
Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

BEN L. ARMSTRONG
PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - Ben Lindsey Armstrong, 75, of Pretoria, South Africa, died Saturday, January 2, 1999 after a long battle with cancer.
A native of Raleigh, he graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School, attended NC State University and Carolina before joining the Army Air Corps in 1942. During WWII he married Hilah White; also of Raleigh, and trained hundreds of pilots of Tomahawks, Mustangs and Thunderbolts. After the war he attended Ringling Bros. School of Art in Sarasota, FL where he studied with Hilton Leach and Ben Stahl. In 1951 he was recalled to the Air Force at Langley Air Force Base where he designed the shield for the Tactical Air Command. He was later assigned as flight commander of the 531st Fighter Bomber Squadron, a member of NATO's European defenses stationed at Chambley, France. As his reputation for being an excellent artist grew, he was commissioned to improve facilities at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Paris as personal aide to General Norstad, Supreme Allied Commander. This role led to his appointment as aide to General Schriever, chief of staff of the US missile program in Washington, DC. In 1963 he was stationed in Pretoria, SA, for four years as the liaison officer and head of the missile tracking station. After two tours of duty in Vietnam flying combat in "Spooky's" as squadron commander, he retired from the Air Force to live in Pretoria for the rest of his life. There he enjoyed pursuing the rewards of living in Africa, whether in the arena of big game or big minerals. His zest for life led him down many interesting paths.
He is survived by his wife, Magdalena Johanna (Joey), of Pretoria, SA; his son, Allen Armstrong, of Raleigh; his daughters, Lee Davis, and Carla Dennis, also of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Rachel, Paul and Robyn Dennis, of Raleigh; his two brothers, David Armstrong, of Tustin, CA, and Ivan Armstrong, of Anderson, SC.
Although it is his wish to be cremated in South Africa, the family wishes to honor Ben by a private reception at the home of Richard and Carla Dennis, 5017 Field & Stream Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613, Monday, January 4, 1999, 7-9 p.m.

MARY C. CREECH
WAKE FOREST - Mary Chaney Creech, age 56, of 113 Robin Avenue, Atlantic Beach, died early Saturday morning, January 2, 1999 at the home of her son Mark S. Creech, 4810 Mitchell Mill Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587. Mary had worked for many years at ITT in Raleigh and was the owner of Small Wonders and Mom Clothing Store in Havelock.
Memorial service 2 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 1999 at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic Beach.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 9, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, 201 East Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach.
Surviving: daughter, Iva Lynn Creech and Donna M. White of Wendell; sons, Mark Sterling Creech and his wife Lola Creech of Wake Forest, Christopher Joe Creech of Apex; sisters, Sandra C. Norris of Newport, NC, Martha C. Donath of Sturgis, SD; brothers, James Chaney of Tabor City, Larry Chaney of Silsbee, Texas; grandchildren, Ashley Nicole Creech, Lindsey Erin Creech.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, Inc., 1300 St. Mary's Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

AMINEH L. KHOSHNAW
RALEIGH - Amineh L. Khoshnaw, 61, passed away Friday, January 1, 1999.
Mrs. Khoshnaw moved to the US in 1976, settling in Greenville, and came to Raleigh in 1986. She devoted her life to raising her ten children and spending quality time with her 12 grandchildren. Amineh loved being with people, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
She is survived by her ten loving children: Hiwa, Hindren, Hewi, Rudy, Rizgar, Hero, Bakhtiar, Salar, Selma, and Hussein, and her 12 grandchildren, who love and adore her.
The family wishes to express eternal gratitude to Dr. Virgil Rose of Raleigh Internal Medicine for his care and compassion, and to the wonderful area Hospice professionals and volunteers.
The family will receive friends at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel Monday, beginning at 2 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

JERONE LOCKLEAR, JR.
ANGIER - Mr. Jerone Locklear, Jr, 34, a native of Robeson County, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999 at Duke Medical Center. Funeral services to be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at O'Quinn-Peebles Chapel in Lillington with the Rev. Kenny Jones officiating. Burial, Westview Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: wife, Monica Lorraine Locklear of the home; daughters, Sheena, Sherena and Sierra; sons, Gerone Graywolf, Tommy, Timmy and Dustin; sisters, Julinea Hare of Wilmington, Zsa Zsa Hamilton of Lumberton; brother, Dino Ray Locklear of Maryland; parents, Lonnie Ray Locklear of Wendell, Janice Faye Holmes of Lumberton; maternal grandmother, Genova Holmes of Lumberton.
The family will receive friends, 1-2:00 p.m. Monday at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.

LOTTIE ALLEN
RALEIGH - Lottie Allen, of 604 Cumberland St., died Wednesday.
Funeral service Monday 11 a.m. at Lea Funeral Home. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: daughters, Barbara Massey and Dorothy Branch both of Raleigh; sons, Daniel Samuels and Paul Allen both of Raleigh; sisters, Ella Mae Williams and Alice Bowman both of Chester, PA; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation: Lea Funeral Home 10:30-11 a.m. Monday.

MARY M. ALLEN
CARY - Mrs. Mary Margaret Allen, 73, of 611 Maynard Road, Cary, N.C., died January 1, 1999 at her residence.
Mrs. Allen was born July 21, 1925 in Florence, S.C. to the late Edward Campbell and Kathryn Hammond Campbell.
Funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at White Plains United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the chapel of the church.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence, S.C.
She held several degrees in music, was an educator and served as assistant to the pastor's of White Plains United Methodist Church for twenty six years.
Surviving are two sons, Wright Allen of Fort Worth, Texas, Grady Allen of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Kathryn Esfahani of Plano, Texas and grandchildren, West Allen and Reeve Allen of Fort Worth, Texas, Maryam Esfahani, Michael Esfahani and Joseph Esfahani of Plano, Texas and Darla Tindle of Cary, N.C.

SIPHRA BACHRACH ROLLAND
DEC. 27, 1901-DEC. 31, 1998
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Siphra Bachrach Rolland was preceded in death by her most beloved Hugo.
Siphra is survived by her granddaughter and "honorary" granddaughter, Joanna Brownstein and Carolyn Harley of Minneapolis, MN; daughter Sandy Brownstein of Chapel Hill, NC; grandson Robert Brownstein of Los Angeles, CA; daughter-in-law Julia Rolland of Moscow, ID; sisters, Louise Lane of New York, NY & Virginia Linsky of Morgantown, WV; along with countless loving family and friends. Siphra's generosity, humor and just plain common sense have been a constant in the lives of all who have known her, loved her and counted on her.
A career social worker and lifelong activist, she showed us the power we each hold to change the world. If desired, memorial gifts should be made to any good, humane and progressive cause. HOKE E. BULLOCK
CASTLE HAYNE - Mr. Hoke English Bullock, 76, of 453 Blossom Ferry Road, formerly of Raleigh, died Thursday, December 31, 1998 in Wake Memorial Hospital, Raleigh.
Mr. Bullock was born November 5, 1922 in Fairmont, a son of the late Troy and Lula Johnson Bullock. He moved to Newport News, Va. to attend the apprentice school at the shipyard. After the war, he moved to Raleigh and attended N.C. State University and founded Bullock Plumbing & Heating. He was past president of the N.C. Association of Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Contractors. He was a lifelong sailor and was always happiest at sea.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bullock Family Cemetery in Fairmont.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Dobbs Bullock of the home; son, John David Bullock of Raleigh; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Bullock and Henry Harrison Sink of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Amy Catherine Bullock, John David Bullock Jr., Robert Lee Brooks III, all of Raleigh, Jennifer Brooks Epley of Williamsburg, Va.; cousin and close friend, Ted Bullock of Castle Hayne.
The family will receive friends Sunday, January 3, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Susan B. Sink, 3107 Sussex Road, Raleigh, N.C. and immediately following the graveside service in Fairmont.
Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of one's choice.

TOMMY L. BURNS
NEWPORT - Tommy Lee Burns, 58, of Newport died Saturday at Carteret General Hospital. Mr. Burns was a retired Navy Chief and current Civil Service Employee at Cherry Point.
Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with Minister of Ceremonies Walter Woodall officiating.
Survivors: wife, Yoko W. Burns of Newport; mother, Sybil Quinn Burns of Kinston, NC; brothers, Leslie K. Burns of Beulaville, NC, Bob Burns, wife Martha and family, Knott Island, NC; sister, Faye Jones, husband Buddy and family, Trenton, NC; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by father Roy Lee Burns.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Hospice of Carteret County, P.O. Box 1818, Morehead City, NC 28557.

HORACE F. DOVER
RALEIGH - Horace Frank Dover, age 79, beloved husband, father and grandfather of 2909 Dover Farm Road, Raleigh, N.C. died at his home January 1, 1999 due to an extended illness. Mr. Dover was a former Wake County Sanitarian, and a dairy farmer went to be with the Lord Friday January 1, 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Christine W. Dover of the home; three sons, Terry Dover and wife Jo, Kim Dover and wife Patti all of Raleigh,N.C. Mark Dover and wife Charlotte of Pinebluff, N.C.; four grandchildren, Troy Dover and wife Eva, Stanley Dover, Ryan Dover, and Anna Dover; three sisters, Pratt Howell and Mary Newton of Cherryville, N.C. Anne Beard of Huntersville, N.C.; two brothers, George Dover and J.R. (Todd) Dover of Cherryville, N.C.
Funeral service will be held Monday January 4, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Macedonia United Methodist Church 2904 Walnut Street Cary, N.C. Officiating will be Reverend Glenn Mason, Pastor and Reverend Paul Scott Jr. Burial will follow in the Montlawn Memorial Park, Highway 70, Raleigh, N.C.

TERRI H. FICKLING
CARY - Terri H. Fickling, 37, of Cary, died January 1, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Terri was a loving wife, mother, daughter and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held Monday, January 4, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary. The burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Mrs. Fickling is survived by her husband, Troy Fickling of Cary; son, Brooks Fickling of Cary; parents, Billy T. and Penny S. Hudson of Florence, SC; brothers, David T. Hudson and Thomas H. Hudson of Florence, SC; sister, Tammy H. Adams and her husband, Wade Adams of Florence, SC.
