GENE M. HARLOW
RALEIGH - Coach Gene Mitchell Harlow, 79, of Raleigh died December 31, 1998 at Raleigh Community Hospital. Coach Harlow grew up in Florence, Alabama, and graduated from Vanderbilt University. During World War II Coach Harlow served in the US Army Air Corp. He began his football coaching career at the University of Alabama, and then went on to coach at the University of Idaho, the Univ. of Oregon, Tulane Univ., and Arkansas State Univ. After his coaching career he joined Crown Zellerbach and was transferred to Raleigh with his family. Upon his retirement from Crown Zellerbach Coach Harlow joined Cooper Tools as a consultant. He was involved civically with the US Census, North Ridge Country Club, the Raleigh Sports Club, and was an active member of Millbrook United Methodist Church.
A visitation will be held Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd.
Coach Harlow was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Jeanne B. Harlow. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia H. Smith and her husband Bill of Wynne, Ark.; daughter, Julie Ward and her husband Chuck of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Stephanie Prince, Dub Smith, Shannon Smith, Dirk Smith, Blythe Ward, and John Ward; and one great-grandchild, Allie Cooper Prince.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Millbrook United Methodist Church.
Flowers will be accepted or a memorial contribution can be made in Gene Harlow's name to Millbrook United Methodist Church, 1712 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609.

JULIAN S. HORTON
MARION - Mr. Julian Sutton Horton, 77, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999 in the Marion County MedicalCenter.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 4, at 3:00 p.m. in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Richardson-Miles Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 702 Lipscomb St., Marion.
Born in Raleigh, he was a son of the late Archibald and Margaret Stedman Horton. Mr. Horton was a graduate of N.C. State University and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in both WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Durham and was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Marion.
Surviving is his wife, Elizabeth Moore Horton of the home and a daughter, Mary Coit Horton of Winston-Salem, NC.
Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Advent, PO box 888, Marion, SC 29571 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, IL 50611-1676.

BONNIE M. LAZARUS
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Bonnie Moore Lazarus, 94, died Thursday, December 31, 1998 at Grand Strand Health Care Center.
She was born April 25, 1904 in Dillon, SC, a daughter of the late Angus Martin and Annie Proctor Moore. She was widow of Norman L. Prevatte and Maurice Lazarus.
Mrs. Lazarus was a retired Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Lazarus and Norman L.Prevatte, both of Myrtle Beach, SC; a daughter, Deborah Ann Bine of Garner, NC; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 1999 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Dillon, SC. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Grand Strand Health Care Memorial Fund, 4452 Socastee Blvd., Myrtle Beach, SC, 29575 or the Virginia Anderson Sunday School Class, c/o Ocean View Baptist Church, 7300 North Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.

ANNIE W. MAJETTE
CHARLOTTE - Annie Sue Winborne Majette, 103, of 5100 Sharon Road, died Saturday, January 2, 1999 at Sharon Towers.She was born in Como, N.C. on September 17, 1895, daughter of the late Samuel Pretlow and Jessie Jones Winborne.She was preceded in death by her husband Jethro Barnes Majette in 1933 and a son, Joseph Pretlow Majette in 1998 and also three sisters.
She graduated from Chowan College, Murfreesboro, N.C. in 1914 and did graduate work at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.She taught in the public schools of North Carolina and for the 20 years before retirement to Charlotte in 1967, she was a counselor at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.She was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution and The Mecklenburg Historical Society and had been a resident of Sharon Towers since 1985. The family will receive friends Sunday, January 3, 1999 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Sharon Towers in the Sharon Room, 5100 Sharon Road.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
She is survived by a son, Jethro Barnes Majette Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C. and a daughter, Helen Jones Majette of Wilmington, N.C.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, N.C. 29818; or to Sharon Towers, Resident Assistance Fund, 5100 Sharon Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28210.

SHIRLEY W. MILLER
AHOSKIE - Shirley Willoughby Miller, 68, of the 300 block of Cherry Street, died January 1, 1999 in her home.
Mrs. Miller was born in Hertford County and was a member of Hickory Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She was retired as assistant manager of Sears Roebuck Company.
Survivors include her husband, H.U. Miller, of Ahoskie; a son, Thomas Eley Miller of Ahoskie; brothers, L.M. (Jake) Willoughby of Ahoskie, William F. Willoughby of Louisville, KY; grandsons, Jason Miller of Ahoskie and Jeremy Miller of Aulander.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, January 4, 1999 in Garrett Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert May. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorial donations may be made to Roanoke Chowan Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

CELESTINO RUOCCHIO
RALEIGH - Celestino Ruocchio, 91, retired salesman and office manager for the Wheeling Steel Corporation, from 1924 to 1968, and Air Cargo Broker from 1968 to 1985, died Friday, January 1, 1999 in Raleigh Community Hospital. Mr. Ruocchio was born in New York City on January 8, 1907 and at an early age moved to Flushing, New York (Queens) where he lived for most of his youth, most of his married life was spent in Whitestone, NY. In 1985 he and his wife, Anne moved to Raleigh to be with their daughter and son. His son has been in Raleigh since 1966 and his daughter came to Raleigh in 1984. Anne died in February of 1996 and he has been living alone since that time with assistance from his daughter and son. His best and most important role was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Anne and Celestino celebrated their Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary with family and friends here in Raleigh in 1991. They met in High School at the age of 18 and had known each other for a total of 71 years. He was a Charter Member of St. Raphael the Archangel Council 9880 of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Ruocchio was the eldest of nine children and is survived by a daughter Anne G.; a son and his wife Albert C. and Eleanor B., three grandsons and their wives, Paul A. and Penny M., John H. and Kathryn K. and Peter A. and four great-grandchildren Christopher P., Matthew J., Andrew T. and Thomas S. all of Raleigh. His surviving sister is Margaret of Flushing, New York and his surviving brother is Eugene and Evelyn of New Port Richie, Florida.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., with Prayer service at approximately 8:45 p.m., Monday, January 4 in the Atrium of St. Raphael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 5801 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Saint Raphaels, Tuesday, January 5. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the St. Raphael School Building Fund or the Frankie Lemmon Foundation, the support foundation for the school that tends to mentally handicapped children.

LEMMA MOSLEY WILLIAMSON
DECATUR, GA. - Born in Polk County, GA. on Sept. 3, 1905 passed away on Jan. 1, 1999. The daughter of John Harvey and Fannie Stephenson Mosely, she was the oldest of nine children. A graduate of Cedartown Ga. High School, she attended Carrollton Agricultural School (now West Georgia College) before transferring to Hall Chaudron School of Nursing in Cedartown with affiliations at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, In Sept. 1928, she married Taliaferro L. Williamson, and in Nov. 1928 her husband's company, Otis Elevator, transferred him to Durham. They lived in Durham until 1950 when, due to Mr. Williamson's declining health, he retired and they moved back to Atlanta where he died June 6, 1952. While in Durham she worked at Duke Hospital and the Durham County Department of Health and was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church. Since returning to Atlanta she has been a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church and worked with the Dekalb County Department of Health.
She is survived by three children: Mae Williamson of the home, Betty (Clyde) Wilder of Raleigh and Youngsville and Rev. Tolly L. Williamson, Jr. of Decatur, Ga. There are seven grandchildren, Van T. Wilder of Tampa, FL, Lieutenant Commander Dave S. Wilder, Chaplain USN of Jacksonville, NC, Vera (Robert) Bradsher of Raleigh Ted D. Wilder of Wake Forest, Gina (David) Fanst of Tampa, FL, Marie A. Williamson of Atlanta and John T. Williamson of Snellville, GA. There are 11 great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Grace (Floyd) Morris of Aragon, GA and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are by A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, GA.
The family will be at the funeral home on Monday evening Jan. 4, 1999 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and at other times at the home, 11 Westchester Square, Decatur.
The funeral will be at the funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in the family plot in Oxford, GA.

HESTER P. WIMBUSH
GARNER - Hester Paulin Wimbush, 78, of Bayberry Lane, Garner, N.C. died at home on Tuesday, December 29, 1998. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 1999 at Martin Street Baptist Church, 1001 E. Martin Street, Raleigh, N.C., with Dr. Charles Bullock officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Viewing will precede the service by a half hour.
She is survived by her husband of forty eight years, John Wimbush, of the home; a brother, Isaiah Paulin (Clara), Roanoke, Va.; a devoted niece, Rosemarie Paulin Green (Guffie), Butner, N.C.; nephew, John L. Paulin (Soona), Waukegan, ILL.; special friends, James and Joanna Satterwhite of Garner; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

JOHNSIE F. HICKS
RALEIGH - Johnsie Lee Flag Hicks of 2510 Bedford Avenue died on Thursday, April 1, 1999. Funeral service will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at Wilson Temple United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Interment takes place at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
She is survived by: brothers, James F. Flagg and George W. Flagg Sr., both of Raleigh; sisters-in-law, Eleanor H. Flagg and Minnie G. Flagg, both of Raleigh; special nieces, Gail F. Ashwood of Cary, N.C. and Eula F. Williams of Apex; other nieces nephews, many relatives and friends.

GEORGE CLAUDE MARETT
RALEIGH - George Claude Marett, 74, died Saturday, April 3, 1999. Born April 22, 1924 in Anderson Co., SC, Mr. Marett was a long time resident of Raleigh. He was a member of Faith Alliance Church in Garner and was a veteran of WWII. He was employed by the Seaboard Coastline Railroad for 25 years.
Mr. Marett is survived by his wife of 55 years, Una Smith Marett of Raleigh; son, Earl and wife Etta Marett of Smithfield; daughters, Linda Chappell of Fuquay-Varina, Glenda and husband Thomas Jeffries of Raleigh; brother, Douglas Marett of Anderson, SC; sister, Helen Sands of Walhalla, SC; grandchildren, Michelle and husband Craig Adcock, Alison Chappell, Geoff, Scott, and Erin Marett, Lee and Rebecca Jeffries.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, 600 Saint Mary's Street and will be officiated by Rev. Aaron Erikson and Rev. Bill Jeffries. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

MARY RAE ALTHERR
CARY - Mary Rae Altherr, 69, of Cary, died Friday, April 2, 1999. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Cary. Burial will follow in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Cary.

CHARLES F. BISHOP
RALEIGH - Charles F. "Charlie" Bishop, 90, of 704 Mills Street died Sunday morning at Rex Hospital. Charlie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as Elder Emeritus at First Presbyterian and also Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Vanguard Class and Early Birds Breakfast Club of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Five Points Coffee Club and the YMCA Health Club for a number of years. Charlie was a loyal fan of the NCSU Wolf Pack and also the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
Charlie first worked as a linotype operator of Bynum Printing Company and then as a salesman for Grimes Supply Company. He later became a partner of U.S. Supply Company of Raleigh and retired several years ago.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Gloria Bishop Toler of Raleigh; two nieces, Carolyn Bishop of Charlotte and Diane Bishop of Raleigh; two nephews, John W. Bishop of Chetek, WI, and Bill Toler of Wayne, PA; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Edna Earl Hodge of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Fannie Mae Bishop.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends in the Baucom Parlor of the First Presbyterian Church one hour prior to the service.

JONES M. CANNADY JR.
FRANKLINTON - Jones M. Cannady, Jr., 74, died Saturday. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, from Perry's Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Louisburg.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Bright Funeral Home, in Wake Forest.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, 3900 Barrett Drive Suite 306, Raleigh, N.C. 27609 or to Perry's Chapel Baptist Church, 854 Perry's Chapel Road, Franklinton, N.C. 27525.

DAVID HAROLD DEES
ELIZABETH CITY - David Harold Dees, 31, of the 1000 Block of Cedar Street, Elizabeth City died Sunday morning as a result of an auto accident. He was a native of Wallace, NC; the son of Peter C. and Linda Bowden Dees of Wallace, NC and husband of Donna Lynn Suermann Dees of Elizabeth City. Mr. Dees was a trooper with the NC Highway Patrol since 1995. He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association and an Eagle Scout.
Besides his wife and parents, Trooper Dees is survived by a daughter, Holly Marie Dees of Elizabeth City; two sons, Christopher David Dees and Bradley Austin Dees both of Elizabeth City, maternal grandmother, Mildred Bowden of Wallace, NC; paternal grandmother, Margaret Dees of Hamlet, NC; a sister, Katherine Dees of Wallace, NC and a brother, John C. Dees of Smithfield, NC.
Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday (April 7, 1999) morning at 11:00 a.m. in Corinth Baptist Church, Elizabeth City by Dr. Roy Head and Rev. F. Joe Griffith. Following the chapel service, the body will be taken to the Padgett Funeral Home, Wallace, NC for a visitation and burial service to be held on Thursday.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m and at other times and 1307 Stacie Dr., Elizabeth City.
The family suggest that memorial donations be made to Boy Scout Pack 167.
Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Church St., is in charge of funeral arrangements.
