RALEIGH - Lucille Williford Pearce, 68, died Monday, April 19, 1999. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home chapel, 401 N. Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving: daughter, Marcia Page of Fuquay-Varina; son, Rickey H. Page of Willow Spring; sister, Rudine McGee of Garner; stepbrother, Herbert McGee of Greensboro; grandchildren, Kenneth Page, Kevin Page, Keith Page, Kristy Ashworth, Denise Strickland and Joey Barbour; seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Thomas Funeral Home, Fuquay-Varina.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 620 West Morgan Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.

FRANKLIN A. AYER
CHAPEL HILL - Franklin A. Ayer of Chapel Hill, died Sunday at UNC Hospitals. He was 80. A native of New Hampshire, Mr. Ayer was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Civil Engineering.
He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Francis.
An active Rotarian, Mr. Ayer was a member of the R.T.P. Club and had served as district Governor. He was a Paul Harris fellow and benefactor. Mr. Ayer was a retired Lt. Col. in the US Army. He was a member of the University United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the University United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Ayer; sons, Ross Ayer of Tampa, FL, Mark Ayer of High Point, Bruce Ayer of Bahama; sister, Patricia Phillipo of Lake of the Woods, VA; brother, Parker Ayer of Durham, NH; four grandchildren also survive.
Memorials may be directed to the Rotary Foundation, One Rotary Center, 1560 Sherman Ave., Evanston, IL 60201 or to University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824-9987.
Walkers Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is in charge of arrangements.

ANNE EAST BIRD
RALEIGH - Anne East Bird, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Friday, April 16, 1999 after a courageous battle with MS and Lung Cancer.
She was predeceased by her sons, Rusty Mansker and Michael Bird.
Anne served for many years as a legal secretary and later as an administrative assistant to her husband in his business activities.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; five daughters, Debra Marsh, Donna Flagg, Margaret Bird, Robin Poston and Michelle Bird; four sons, Richard Jr, David, Stephen and Benjamin; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; dear friend and "sister", Dee Medley.
Service will be held 3 p.m. Friday, April 23, 1999 at the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 E. Millbrook Rd. in N. Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., 4th Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

EVELYN F. BRANTLEY
FEB. 8, 1917 - APRIL 18, 1999
ZEBULON - Evelyn Fowler Brantley, 82, of 2616 Lizard Lick Rd., died Sunday afternoon at Rex Hospital. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Edward C. Fowler, Jr. and Florence Horton Fowler. She was the widow of Robert R. Brantley. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21 at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Wendell with Reverend Bob Innskeep officiating.
Surviving: daughters, Jo Ann B. Martin of Zebulon, Amanda F.B. Simon of Richmond, VA; sister, Sallie F. Hagwood of Zebulon; grandchildren, Chris D. Raper, Jody E. Martin, Amy L. Winstead, Monica S. Taylor, Peter C. Simon; five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell.

SARAH F. CANADAY
FUQUAY-VARINA - Sarah Fleming Canaday, 88, a resident of Senter's Rest Home, died Sunday, April 18, 1999 at Rex Hospital. Graveside service 3 p.m. today at Wake Chapel Cemetery.
Surviving: sister, Sue Fleming Hodge and husband, Ray of Woodstock, GA; two nieces; five nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. today at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina.

TERESA S. CRUTCHFIELD
FUQUAY-VARINA - Teresa S. Crutchfield, 34, of 109 Northwest St., passed on April 15, 1999. Funeral 12-noon today, First Baptist Church, Fuquay-Varina. Burial, Sweet ?Springs Church Cemetery, Holly Springs.
Surviving: husband, Ronald E. Crutchfield; son, Ronald Crutchfield, Jr.; daughter, Jennifer Crutchfield; mother, Rennie Thorpe of Fuquay-Varina; sisters, Adele Thorpe of Largo, MD, Angie Thorpe of Fuquay-Varina; brother, James L. Thorpe of Fuquay-Varina; maternal grandmother, Alma Douglas McNeil of Holly Springs; paternal grandmother, Pattie Thorpe of Greensboro; one great-aunt; 14 aunts and uncles; seven nieces; one nephew.
Visitation one hour prior to the service.
Service under the direction of Trice Funeral Home.

BENJAMIN F. "FRANK" HOBBS SR.
WARSAW - Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Hobbs Sr., 87, passed away Monday, April 19, 1999 at Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.
Born May 6, 1912 to the late Willie and Ida Dameron Hobbs of Sampson County, Mr. Hobbs was retired after many years of service as a self-employed barber.
Surviving Mr Hobbs are two sons, Benjamin Franklin Hobbs Jr. of Clinton, W. Keith Hobbs of Raleigh; two grandsons, Vance Hobbs and Reid Hobbs, both of Raleigh.
Service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at Warsaw United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Clinton City Cemetery in Clinton.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Community Funeral Home of Warsaw.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford Orphanage.

LOUISE BROCKWELL JOSLIN
DANVILLE, VA - Louise Brockwell Joslin, 93, formerly of Dogwood Drive, Danville, Virginia, died Monday, April 19, 1999.
She was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Mildred Bagwell and Sherwood Battle Brockwell. She graduated from Meredith College in 1927 and continued her graduate studies at Columbia University and later at the University of Virginia. In 1947 she moved to Danville where she taught history, English, and music at various regional schools. She was active in numerous civic and cultural organizations in Danville, including the Music Study Club, of which she was president, the Wednesday Club, of which she was program chairman, and the Wayside Garden Club. She attended Epiphany Episcopal Church. In Raleigh she was a member of the Women's Club and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her husband, Asher Langdon Joslin, her daughter, Mary Louise Joslin Sexton who is known by her professional name, Emyl Jenkins, a grandson, Langdon Jenkins of Atlanta, and a granddaughter, Joslin Jenkins Hultazapple of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held in Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday, April 21. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Robert Sexton, 416 Maple Lane, from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20.

ELTON R. PEELE
RALEIGH - Elton Roy Peele, 87, head of the Drivers License Division for the State of North Carolina for 18 years, died early Monday, April 19, 1999 following heart valve replacement surgery.
Mr. Peele headed the Drivers License Division from 1947 through 1965. During his tenure there he improved the professionalism of license examiners and was given national recognition by the American Optometry Association for instituting eye examinations for drivers licensing. He went to the N.C. Department of Corrections in 1965, supervising its data processing, and retired in 1974.
An active sportsman, he played golf up until the time he entered the hospital for heart surgery and shot his age. He was a graduate of Wake Forest College when it was located in Wake Forest, NC, and served as an officer in the Navy in World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Privette Peele of Raleigh; two daughters, Mary Katherine (Mrs. Thomas J. Bolch) of Raleigh and Louise (Mrs. Robert C. Jordan) of Elizabeth City; a step-daughter, Sheila (Mrs. Clyde Stevens Jr.) of Raleigh; and nine grandchildren. His first wife, Katherine Monson Peele of Raleigh, was Chief Clerk of the North Carolina Utilities Commission until her retirement in 1978. She predeceased him in 1991.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Crabtree Valley Baptist Church followed by burial at Montlawn Cemetery. Family visitation will be Tuesday at 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Chapel at Montlawn. Other visitation 3915 Oak Park Road and 4517 Touchstone Forest Road.

PEGGY S. PLEASANTS
WAKE FOREST - Peggy Seal Pleasants, 51, of Purnell Road, died Sunday, April 18, 199 at Rex Hospital. She was born born in Hancock, TN and was the daughter of the late Jack and Hilda Ramey Seal. She was a member of Mary's Chapel Baptist Church. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at Mary's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Al Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Pleasants is survived by her husband, Wayne Pleasants; daughter, Tammy Pleasants Merritt and her husband, Jeff of Youngsville; brothers, Sidney Seal of Clayton, Gary Seal of Sneedville, TN; three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Scott Dorsey and Jimmy Dale Dorsey.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

LACY C. RABON, SR.
BENSON - Lacy Carlyle Rabon, Sr., 84, of 101 Catherine Street died Sunday at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. A retired employee of the Department of Transportation, he was a native of Columbus County, born July 16, 1914, to the late Daniel Walter and Mary Rochelle Rabon. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. He was a member of Banner Post 109, American Legion and Benson Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Benson. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
Surviving; wife, Rosalie Clifton Rabon; son, Lacy C. "Sam" Rabon, Jr., of Gainesville, FL; brother, Jimmy Rabon of Four Oaks; grandchildren, Lynn Patton, and Gail Rabon; great-grandchildren, Ashlie Patton and Matthew Patton.
The family will be at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

DOROTHY DWORSKI STERN
CHAPEL HILL - Mrs. Dorothy Dworski Stern, 89, died Sunday, April 18, 1999.
Dorothy grew up in Rochester, NY. After marrying Aaron "Ike" Stern in 1934, she moved to Meriden and then Waterbury, CT. After retirement they lived in Greensboro and Durham, NC. Dorothy was active in the communities in which she lived, serving in many volunteer capacities. She was known for her gracious hospitality and unselfish sharing of her time and energy.
She is survived by a sister, Monice Arnold of Durham; daughters, Patricia Penn of Chapel Hill and New York, Marnie and Jerry Ruskin of Greensboro and Gail Stern of Chapel Hill; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at Temple Beth Or, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Dorothy and Ike Stern and Saretta Ruskin Scholarship Fund, UNCG Development Office, 1100 West Market St., Greensboro, NC 27402.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, NC.

PETER A. WEISS
CHAPEL HILL - Peter Andrew Weiss of Chapel Hill died Saturday at New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington. He was 22.
Born in Durham on June 2, 1976, Peter was a student at NC State University.
A mass of Christian, burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
Peter is survived by his parents, James R. Weiss, MD and Patricia F. Weiss of the home. Two brothers, James R. Weiss, Jr. of Washington, DC and John D. Weiss of Athens, GA. Paternal grandmother, Mrs. Robert U. Weiss of New Orleans and maternal grandparents, John J. Finnerty of Warwick, RI, and Mrs. Stella P. Therault of Orlando, FL.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Walkers Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the St. Thomas More Catholic School, 920 Carmichael Dr., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

JACK WOMACK
ANGIER - Jack Womack, 65, of Holly Springs, died Monday. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, chapel of Overby-Johnson Funeral Home Rev. Lennie Lunsford officiating. Burial will be in Kennebec Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Teresa Womack, Susan Womack and Debbie Quinn, all of Raleigh; sisters, Kathleen Adams of Angier, Doris Bartlett and Betty Lou Pollard, both of Raleigh, Magdlene Rogers of Fuquay-Varina; brother, Thomas V. Womack, Jr. of Raleigh; granddaughter, Amber Quinn.
Family will receive friends family and friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
