JOSEPH RUOHS JARNAGIN JR.
KINSTON - Joseph Ruohs Jarnagin, Jr. of Dover, died on June 1, 1999. He was born on December 30, 1924 in Chattanooga, TN to Joseph Ruohs Jarnagin and Clara Thompson Jarnagin.
Joe was preceded in death by a brother, Spencer Hewitt Jarnagin and a granddaughter, Lesley Dawn Pillow.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Martha Smith Jarnagin of Dover; children, Sandra Pillow of Dover, Brenda Traylor and husband, Mike of Dover, Mary Jarnagin Poe of Apex, Spencer Joseph Jarnagin and wife, Kristi of Wilmington, Pamela Jarnagin Farmer and husband, Ray of LaGrange; grandchildren, David Pillow, Nicole Golden, Aaron Traylor, Victor Pillow, Ashley Poe, Jessica Farmer, Ryan Poe, Sara Farmer, and Anna Jarnagin; great-grandchild, Adrian Golden. He is also survived by a brother, Douglas Cranston Jarnagin and wife, Sara of Lakeland, FL.
Joe retired from Weyerhauser Paper Company of New Bern after 21 years of service where he served as the Chief Electrical and Mechanical Engineer. He was a member of the Dover United Methodist Church, the Wilmington Power Squadron, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Woodman of the World. Joe served as a St. John's 32nd Degree Mason, a Dover Alderman, and his country in World War II for seven years as a Merchant Marine. As an organ donor, his eyes will be used for medical research. He was an avid fisherman and his love for the sea will continue through his children. Joe also loved to travel and was always seeking "road trips" with his family and friends.
Visitation will be at the Dover United Methodist Church on Thursday June 3, from 7-9 p.m. Services will be at the Dover United Methodist Church on Friday, June 4, at 11 a.m. with burial at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC at 2 p.m. All services will be conducted by the Rev. Martin Armstrong of Dover.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565 or to the Dover United Methodist Church, PO Box 188, Dover, NC 28526.
The family wishes to thank all for their continued prayers.

CASWELL "CAS" E. SPENCER JR.
RALEIGH - Caswell "Cas" E. Spencer Jr., 56, of Raleigh, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Rex Hospital.
Cas was a native North Carolinian and was born in Louisburg. He graduated from Oxford High School and Fuller Business School. He received an honorable discharge from the North Carolina National Guard, after 2 years of service. Cas worked for many years at Nowells Clothing Store at North Hills Mall and retired in 1990 from Jos A. Bank Clothiers as assistant manager.
Cas will be remembered with admiration by his family and many friends for a very special brand of courage. With his ready smile, honesty, sense of humor and positive attitude, he faced a progressive physical disability with grace and strong faith in God. He had a full and active life devoting much time helping others who struggle with their personal problems, one day at a time, as he did, until God called him home. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street.
Cas was preceded in death by his father, Caswell E. Spencer Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Edna Blackwell Spencer of Oxford; wife, of 16 years, Charlotte Spencer; son, Caswell E. Spencer III of Raleigh; daughter, Tracy Spencer Scruggs and husband, Sgt. Loren Scruggs of Fort Bragg; son, William E. Conely of Raleigh; daughter, Kara Conely Schneider and husband, Robert Schneider of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandsons, Spencer and Ashton Scruggs of Fort Bragg; sister, Marilyn Spencer Noblin and husband, Dan V. Noblin Sr. of Oxford; nieces, Donna W. West and husband Ricky West of McKenney, Va.; nephew, Dan V. Noblin Jr. and his wife, Terri Noblin of Zebulon; and his faithful canine companion Beau.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1500 Glenwood Ave. The burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Meadowview Memorial Park, Oxford.

H. A. "BUD" ALLRED JR.
DURHAM - Mr. H. A. "Bud" Allred, Jr., 79, of Durham, husband of the late Myrie Bass Allred, died Wednesday afternoon in Northwood Manor Nursing Center.
Mr. Allred was a native of Concord, NC. He moved to Durham in 1948 and worked as an auto salesman for several car dealers. Mr. Allred was a member of the Durham Civitans and School Boy Safety Patrol. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he belonged to the Julian S. Carr Sunday School Class.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. H. Gray Southern.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Reggie and Elizabeth Allred of Durham; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Harry Grubbs of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Peggy Smith of Pageland, SC and Mrs. Louise Glover of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday night at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 215 North Church Street, Durham, NC 27701.

ROBERT G. ARNOTT
WHISPERING PINES - Robert George Arnott, 82, died June 2, 1999, in his home. Mr. Arnott retired from the New York Telephone Company after 42 years of service as construction supervisor. He served in the Army during WW II in the European Theater. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Friday from the Community Congregational Church in Southern Pines with Rev. Michael Garber officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ludington Arnott; sons, Robert D. Arnott of Coral Springs, FL, Douglas G. Arnott of Vesta, NY; daughter, Nancy Arnott of Hillsborough; brother, John Arnott of Syracuse, NY; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to FirstHealth Hospice, P.O. Box 1956, Pinehurst, NC 28370.
Powell Funeral Home and Crematory of Southern Pines is serving the Arnott family.

GLENN BARNES
FOUR OAKS - Glenn Wesley Barnes, 65, of Niceville, FL, formerly of Four Oaks, NC, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999. Funeral service will be held Friday, June 4th, 1999 at Minshew Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Casey officiating. Burial to follow at Four Oaks Cemetery.
Mr Barnes was born in Johnston County on May 11, 1934.
Survivors: wife, Mary Barnes, Niceville, FL; mother, Carrie Barnes, Four Oaks; daughters, Kim Taylor and Tammy Barnes both of Durham; son, Brian Barnes of Hillsboro; brother, Charles Daniel Barnes, Four Oaks; sisters, Barbara Sharpe, Kennansville, and Carolyn Allen of Raleigh; granddaughters, Andrea and Robyn Taylor of Durham.
The family will receive friends at the home of Carrie Barnes, 1387 Black Creek Rd., Four Oaks, NC.

HENRY L. BRAKE JR.
ROCKY MOUNT - Henry Louis Brake, Jr. 82, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Nash General Hospital. He was born September 13, 1916 in Edgecombe County, the son of the late Henry Louis, Sr. and Blanche Lewis Brake. Mr. Brake was a life long resident of Edgecombe County. He was a member of West Edgecombe Baptist Church serving on the Board of Deacons and first president of the Brotherhood Mens Organization. Mr. Brake was a graduate of North Carolina State University, class of 1938. He was a member of the Alpha Zeta Honorary Fraternity, and a life time member of the Wolf Pack Club. He spent several years with the Agriculture Extension Service in Perquimons, Pasquotank, Camden and Currituck counties as an Assistant County Agent. In 1942, Mr. Brake returned to the home place to farm, where he later founded Brakes Acres Egg Company. He was past president and charter member of the West Edgecombe Ruritan Club. He also served on board of directors for the North Carolina Egg Association and the Advisory Board of the Community Medicine Foundation in founding the Oakwood Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Meiggs Brake of the home; three sons, Henry Louis Brake, III and wife Paula Jones Brake of Charlotte, George Meiggs Brake and wife Craig Towe Brake of New Bern, and Joseph Arnold Brake and wife, Joanne Guyant Brake of Rocky Mount; one brother, Retired Colonel Ralph Wilson Brake and wife Phyllis Bates Brake of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren, Henry Louis Brake, IV, Jonathan Lee Brake, Amy Brake Hill, Thomas Wayne Brake, George Meiggs Brake, Jr., Michael Manz Brake and Sara Brake Moseley; eight great-grandchildren, Henry Louis Brake, V, Kathryn Grace Brake, Bethany Leigh Brake, Benjamin Nash Hill, Catherine Ann Brake, Caitlyn Alexandra Brake, Joshua David Brake and Ryan Allen Moseley.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at West Edgecombe Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Harry Kahn, Rev. Everett Marion, and Rev. James Reid Emery officiating. Burial will follow at Brake Family Cemetery.
Mr. Brake will lie in state at his home, 1830 Cokey Road, Rocky Mount, NC where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
Flowers accepted or memorial contributions can be made to West Edgecombe Baptist Church or the church of your choice in memory of Mr. Henry Louis Brake, Jr. Arrangements by Bowling Funeral Home, 661 English Road, Rocky Mount, NC.

JUANITA J. CLAYTON
ASHEBORO - Juanita J. Clayton, 75, died May 26, 1999 after a lengthy illness at Greybrier Nursing Center, Trinity, NC.
Surviving: sons, Michael P. Clayton, Jr. of Raleigh, Francis A. Clayton of Greensboro, Walter Robert James of Greensboro; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services were held May 27, 1999 at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.
Donations may be made to Greybrier Nursing Center, 116 Lane Dr., Trinity, NC, 27370.

MAUDE BURKE HOWELL CONNELL
OAKBORO - Mrs. Maude Burke Howell Connell, 79,of 8272 NC Highway 205, Oakboro, NC, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Funeral service 4 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 1999 at the Mineral Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Martin, Rev. James Howell, Dr. Kinney Wallace, and Rev. Mac Keck officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Connell was born June 21, 1919 in Chatham County to the late John William and Fannie Stinson Burke. She was a retired Administrative Assistant with the NC Dept of Social Services. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.
Mrs. Connell was preceded in death by her former husbands, Raleigh White in January, 1945 and Benjamin Famon Howell on April 14, 1980.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. John Henry Connell, son, Ben Burke Howell of Philadelphia, PA; granddaughters, Elizabeth Burke Howell and Margaret Armstrong Howell, both of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends and relatives 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times will be at the home in Oakboro.

MARY K. "KITTY" COOMBS
GOLDSBORO - Mary Kathleen "Kitty" Davis Coombs, 74, of 307 White Oak Drive, died Sunday at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center. A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the Late Charlie and Myrtle Rhodes Davis and the widow of Horace Coombs. Graveside service was held Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Steve Teague officiating.
She is survived by daughters, Linda Russell and husband, Alton of Raleigh, Brenda Robinson of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Howland of Kissimmee, FL.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Coombs.
Memorials may be made to the Kitt Askins Hospice Center, PO Box 88, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or to Wayne County Meals on Wheels.

W. "BILL" I. DANGER
BENSON - Mr. William Ira "Bill" Danger, 63, of 1908 NC Hwy. 242 North, died Tuesday at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel, Benson. Revs. John Norman and Billy Todd will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Devotional Gardens, Dunn.
Mr. Danger was born January 17, 1936, in Hamilton County, Iowa, to Ferne Johnson Danger of Ellsworth, Iowa and to the late Clarence Danger. He was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietname War. Mr. Danger was a member of American Legion Banner Post 109. After retiring from the military, Mr. Danger taught for 18 years at Hobbton High School in the Vocational Agriculture Department. He was a FFA Advisor and received the Blue and Gold Award from the Goshen Federation Agriculture Teachers Foundation. Mr. Danger was also a hunter safety instructor.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, are wife, Joan Brantley Danger; daughter and son-in-law, Dana Danger and Chris Harlow of Benson; son and daughter-in-law, Kerry and Melissa Danger of Four Oaks; sister, Cris Berger of Story City, Iowa; brothers, David Danger of Garden City, Iowa, Richard Danger of Story City, Iowa; granddaughter, Haley Danger.
The family will receive friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the FFA Scholarship Fund, Hobbton High School, 12201 Hobbton Highway, Newton Grove, NC 28366.

JOHNNY BANE FRANKLIN
FRANKLINTON - Johnny Bane Franklin, 60, of 11 Beechwood Road, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
He was born in Franklin County and was the son of the late Earl Bane Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Catlett Franklin.
He was a retired truck driver for Rose's and was a member of the Franklinton American Legion Post and of the Louisburg Moose Lodge.
Funeral service will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday afternoon in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest, with the Rev. James Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Youngsville Cemetery.
Mr. Franklin is survived by his wife, Linda G. Franklin; daughters, Danielle Franklin and Crystal Franklin of the home and Lisa Scott of Raleigh; sons, Joey Franklin of Raleigh and Johnny Bane Franklin Jr. of Elizabeth City; sister, Mary Ann Walkup of Henderson; brothers, Thomas Franklin of Henderson, Roger Franklin and Ernest Franklin of Youngsville and Milton Franklin of MD; three grandchildren.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Gen Royal Baptist Church, 731 Elizabeth Avenue, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 7-8:30 Friday evening. (556-5811).

EDWARD GARRIGUES
CHAPEL HILL - Edward Garrigues, 97, of Chapel Hill, died June 1 at Carol Woods retirement Community.
He served in the U.S. Navy in both World Wars and was a retired Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. During World War II he commanded an LST group in the South Pacific.
Following one year at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis he attended Franklin and Marshall College, where he was a member of the football and basketball teams. He graduated in 1925 and later received a master's degree in education at the University of Pennsylvania.
For a number of years he was a teacher, coach and administrator of schools in New Jersey. He coached the basketball team at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, NJ, taught at Woodstown High School and was principal of Pedricktown Elementary School. He was a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
His wife, Ruth, predeceased him in 1985. Their niece, P.B. Adams, lives in Chapel Hill. Mr. Garrigues and his wife moved to Carol Woods Retirement Community from Woodstown, NJ in 1979.
No memorial service is planned. Contributions can be made to Carol Woods Resident Research Fund, or charity of choice.
Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.

DAPHINE WEAVER HOLMES
WAKE FOREST - Daphine Weaver Holmes, 75, of 8501 Thompson Mill Road, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999. She was born in Franklin County and was the daughter of the late William Henry and Roxie Jeans Weaver.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday morning, June 4, 1999 at Woodland Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Holmes is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Carolyn Holmes of Wake Forest; sisters, Nancy Denton of Wake Forest and Hazel Weaver of Raleigh; brothers, Claude Weaver of Knightdale and Nathan Weaver of Raleigh; grandsons, Dave Holmes and his wife, Teresa of Wake Forest; great-grandchildren, Renae and Jacob Holmes.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday evening. (556-5811)
