SEPT. 29, 1915-APR. 10, 1999
SMITHFIELD - Funeral services for Minnie Hicks Kelly, age 83, will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Smithfield. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens at Clayton.
Surviving, brothers, Jesse Hicks of Clayton and Dewey Hicks of Garner; sisters, Venie Starling of Fuquay-Varina, Pearl Cherry of Garner, Addie Coats of Smithfield and Berniece Norris of Clayton.
The family will receive friends at Underwood Funeral Home today from 6-8 p.m.

JESSIE CHILDRESS MATTHEWS
DENTON - Mrs. Jessie Childress Matthews, 68, entered into rest Friday, April 9, 1999 at her residence. Jessie was born in Surry County, September 30, 1930, a daughter of Gran P. and Mozell Caudle Childress. She received her R.N. in 1951 from the Rex Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh and her C.R.N.A. from Baptist Hospital School of Anesthesia in Winston-Salem in 1952. Jessie worked at the High Point and Thomasville Hospitals most of her career. She was of the Methodist faith and married Marion K. Matthews Sr., August 24, 1955.
Surviving are her husband of the home; a son, M. Kirby Matthews Jr. of Denton; a daughter, Harriet Browning of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Dianna and Elizabeth Matthews, both of Denton, and Zachary and Jessica Browning, both of Charlotte; three sisters, Mary C. Morin of Kingsport, TN; Pat C. Hardy and Sue McCreary, both of Mt. Airy.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Harold C. Davis Funeral Chapel, 976 Phillips Ave., High Point, by Dr. Thomas Patterson and the Rev. Charles Dickens.
Memorials may be directed to the Oxford Orphanage Alumni Red Devil Club, c/o Denton Lodge 404, P.O. Box 673, Denton, NC 27239 or to Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. Box 1941, Lexington, NC 27293.

VIRGINIA ALLEN MAY
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Virginia Allen May, 71, of Maisons Sur Mer, died Saturday, April 10, 1999 at her home. She was born August 8, 1927 in Chilocophee, OH, a daughter of the late Robert and Evelyn Lefler Allen.
Mrs. May attended Southern Seminary and Purdue University. She moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1977 from Durham, NC, where she was a member of Epworth Methodist Church, she was very active with the Women's Bazaar and was the first recipient of the Women's Society Lifetime Membership. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Durham Debutante Ball Society and the Maison's Angels.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Duke May of Myrtle Beach, SC; a son, David C. May II of Durham, NC; two daughters, Michael Lanning of Raleigh, NC, Dorothy Goodnight of Salisbury, NC; and four grandchildren, John Robert, Karen, Julia and Cleveland May.
Memorials may be made to Epworth Methodist Church, 3002 Hope Valley Road, Durham, NC 27707 or Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC 27707.
McMillan-Small Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS G. MURPHY
CLAYTON - Thomas Gray Murphy, 64, died Friday. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday, Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Maplewood Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Linda J. Murphy; sons, Gray Murphy Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., Joseph P. Murphy of Garner; daughters, Robin L. Murphy of Raleigh, Lisa Beth Worley of Princeton; brother, J.C. Murphy Jr. of Roanoke, Va., Charles Murphy of Philadelphia; sisters, Betty Rogers of Youngsville, Linda Bryant of Raleigh, Alice Johnson of Raleigh; six grandchildren.
The family will receive 7-9 p.m. Sunday, McLaurin Funeral Home, Clayton.

JOHN HINES NEAL
KITTY HAWK, NC - John Hines Neal, 46, of Kitty Hawk, died Friday, April 9, 1999, at his residence. Mr. Neal was born in Columbia, SC. He was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids, a graduate of N.C. State University and a commercial fisherman. Mr. Neal is the son of Webb B. and Hilda Hines Neal of Roanoke Rapids and the husband of Phyllis Goodwin Neal of the home.
Besides his wife and parents surviving are a daughter; Sarah C. Neal of Kitty Hawk; one son; Philip G. Neal of Kitty Hawk and a brother, Thomas B. Neal of Aiken, SC.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 11, 1999 at 3 p.m. in Twiford's Colony Chapel by The Rev. Charles E.B. Gill.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Albemarle Hospice, 400 S. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to the Dare Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, 106 Sir Walter Raleigh St., Manteo, NC 27954.
Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo is handling arrangements.

LISA J. PARKER
ROBERSONVILLE - Lisa Jan Parker, 44, died Saturday, April 10, 1999. Ms. Parker was a recipient of the 1999 Distinguished Women of North Carolina award presented by the N.C. Council of Women.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church by Rev. Jimmy Hagwood and Rev. James O. Hagwood. Burial will be in Martin Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: parents, Barry W. and Ruth Muriel Parker of Robersonville; brothers, Elliott Parker and wife, Phyllis of Williamston, Bobby Parker of Wilmington; niece, Allison Parker; nephews, Barry and Adam Parker.
Miss Parker was a member of the First Baptist Church and was the Director of Operations in the Governor's Office in Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Youth Department, First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 445, Robersonville, N.C. 27871.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Biggs Funeral Home, Robersonville and other times at home of B.W. & Ruth Parker, 7243 Highway 64, Robersonville, N.C.

MRS. JOAN PENNELL
RALEIGH - Mrs. Joan Pennell, 64, of Raleigh, NC, passed away at home on Friday, April 9, 1999 after a five year courageous battle with multiple myeloma.
Mrs. Pennell was born in Binghamton, NY on December 4, 1934, the daughter of the late Leon and Josephine Osgood.She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice L. Semowich.
Joan and her husband George, married in Binghamton, NY, in 1957, then lived in Louisiana, Texas, New York, and settled in Raleigh in 1966. In 1972, they lived in Scotland for a year, before returning to Raleigh.
Joan was a lover of books, miniatures, history, weaving, needlework, and travel. Over the years, she attended NCSU to further her education. During her life, Joan was a leader and member of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.; President and member of the Jayncees of NY; President and member of the Wake County Historical Society; President and charter member of the Raleigh Miniatures Guild; member of the West Laurel Hills Book Club; member of the Jane Austen Society; N.C. State Questers Board of Directors; Board of Directors Mordecai Square Historical Society; President and member of the 1789 Questers, Inc. Joan recently led the rededication of the Rex Cancer Center.
Joan was a longtime miniature enthusiast and shared in her craft with her husband and granddaughter, Katherine. Joan gave freely and generously of her time, her talents and her resources in all her endeavors. Her elegance, wit, generosity, kindness and strength of character served as models for those who had the good fortune to know her. She will be remembered with love, admiration and deep respect by those whose lives she touched.
Joan is survived by her husband of 41 years, George H. Pennell; children, Suzette P. Brown of Raleigh and Mark C. Pennell of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Katherine and Kelly Brown, Charles and Sam Pennell; sister, Grace A. Smith of Clarksville, TN; brother, Leon (Skip) Osgood of Binghamton, NY; six nephews and two nieces.
Mrs. Pennell will be cremated, and the family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 11 Forest Street, New Canaan, CT 06840 (203) 972-1250.

ED THOMAS ROBERSON
STANTONSBURG - Mr. Ed T. Roberson, age 65, of P.O. Box 66, Hwy. 58 N., died Friday, April 9, 1999.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, 2 p.m. from Shingleton Funeral Home Chapel by Reverend A.G. Smith. Interment will follow Stantonsburg Cemetery.
Mr. Roberson was a lifetime resident of Wilson County and was employed in the Maintenance Department at Nucor Bearing Products.
He is survived by his wife, Patty S. Roberson of Wilson, 1 daughter, Brenda Pierce of Wilson; two sons, Billy Roberson and Alvin Thomas Roberson both of Stantonsburg; three sisters, Olive Baker, Virginia Baker and Barbara Wells all of Farmville; one brother, Carney Roberson of Kenly; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at Shingleton Funeral Home, Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and other times at 2908 Tilghman Rd. in Wilson.

G. HOYT STEPHENSON
ANGIER - G. Hoyt Stephenson, 74, of 3625 Abattoir Road, died Saturday at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dunn. He was a native of Harnett County, born November 17, 1924, to the late George W. and Viola Mae Stevens Stephenson. He was a retired farmer, a US Navy Veteran of World War II, and a member of Banner Post 109, American Legion. Mr. Stephenson was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Hayes Stephenson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Rose & Graham Funeral Chapel in Coats. Revs. Steve Pegram and Jesse Mooney will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Terry Godwin of Dunn; son, Lynn Hayes Stephenson of Coats; sister, Rachel Ennis of Coats; three grandchildren, Melissa Godwin, Stephen Godwin and Andrea Godwin.
The family will be at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and at other times at the home of Rachel and Charles Ennis, 1117 S. Lincoln Street, Coats, NC.

J. RICHARD WALL
MAY 15, 1934-APR. 9, 1999
GARNER - Jessie Richard Wall, 64, of 901 Powell Drive, died Friday.
Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving, wife, Teasie Young Wall; daughters, Brenda Wall Looney of Raleigh, Scarlett Wall Parrish and husband Landis of Benson and Jean Wall Rogister and husband Aubrey of Mebane; a son, John Wesley Wall of Benson; brother, Carlton Wall and wife Tilly of LaGrange; four grandchildren, David Williams, Dana Looney, Candice Parrish, and Taylor Rogister. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lela and Roy Wall and a grandson, Richard Anthony "Tony" Williams.
Visitation from 3-5 p.m. today at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.

EXZERA WATSON
RALEIGH - Exzera Watson of 1510 E. Jones Street, departed this life on Wednesday April 7, 1999 at the Litchford Falls Health Rehabilitation Center. She was retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Turner of Roosevelt, NY, Clara Turner of the home; one sister Mrs. Pollie W. Saunders (Jesse) of Raleigh, NC; one granddaughter Layvay Richardson (Johnny) of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at Martin Street Baptist Church, with Dr. Charles T. Bullock officiating at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1999. Family will receive friends 10:30-11 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will take place at the Wilson Mills Cemetery, Johnston County.
R.L. Sanders of Smithfield, NC is in charge of the arrangement.

KATIE WILSON
DETROIT, MICHIGAN - Mrs. Katie Wilson, 75, formerly of Raleigh, died Saturday at Sina Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. She was a native of Raleigh and was the widow of the late John Wilson. Mrs. Wilson retired from General Motors.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 12th, 12 Noon, Lea Funeral Home Chapel, Pastor K. Ray Hill, officiating. Burial to follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by; two sisters; Dorothy King and Mary Stewart of Raleigh; one brother, Anderson Sanders of Raleigh; a special niece, Maye Hayes of Jamaica, NY; one brother-in-law, Alexander King of Raleigh; two sisters-in-law, Louise Watson of Sacramento, CA and Bernestine Sanders of Raleigh; and a host of other family and friends.
Viewing hours will be held on Sunday and before the service on Monday.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 11:30 until 12 Noon.
All other times at the home of Mrs. Mary Stewart, 1720 Fountain Dr.

ALINE A. BLOWE
JAN. 19, 1922-APRIL 15, 1999
RALEIGH - Aline A. Blowe, 77, of Raleigh and Emerald Isle, NC, died Thursday, April 15 at Rex Hospital. She was the wife of the late Sherman W. Blowe. She was the daughter of the late George Augustus and Martha Blanche Alford. Mrs. Blowe was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Blowe is survived by her sisters, Geraldine A. Hall and Christine A. Benton; brother, Paul Alford, all of Raleigh; nephews, Ronnie Alford and George Hall of Raleigh, Larry Alford of Chapel Hill and Mike Alford of Atlanta; nieces, Virginia Brown and Patricia Christianson of Atlanta; ten great-nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell, NC, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 18, and other times at the home of her nephew, George L. Hall, 4829 Rembert Dr., Raleigh, NC.

D. WORTH FRAZIER
FEB. 27, 1940 - APRIL 15, 1999
KNIGHTDALE - David Worth Frazier, 59, of 118 Pine Country Lane, died Thursday night at his home. He was a retired purchasing agent with Carolina Welding Supplies and security guard with Allied Security. He was born in Iredell County, the son of the late David Earlie and Nancy Mayes Frazier. He was a graduate of Harmony High School, class of 1959. He also attended Lenior Rhyne College and Mitchell College.
The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Saturday night at Strickland Funeral Home with a funeral service at 7 p.m. in the chapel. A graveside funeral service will be at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Fairmount United Methodist Church Cemetery in Statesville.
Surviving: wife, Willa H. Frazier; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Allen Swaim of Wendell; son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Brenda Frazier of Knightdale; sisters, Lola Frazier of Charlotte, Lucille Sanders of Hickory, Elizabeth Henderson of Harmony; grandchildren, Kayla, Maggie and A.J. Swaim, Justin, Amber, Brittany and Katerina Frazier.
