WALTER LEROY REAVES
ROANOKE RAPIDS - Mr. Walter Leroy Reaves, 74, died Friday, April 15, 1999, at Carolina Rest Home where he was a resident.
Mr. Reaves was a native of Clayton, and a retired employee of 3M Company in Alexandria, Va. He was a member the first Christian Church.
Mr. Reaves was the son of the late James Walter Reaves and Mary Ida Morris Reaves.
Mr. Reaves was preceded in death by three brothers, James "Bunnie" Reaves, Odis E. Reaves, and Clarence "Rudy" Reaves.
Surviving are a son, Roger A. Reaves of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Albert Louie Reaves of Chattanooga, TN; sisters, Mary Bernice Gray of Roanoke Rapids and Lois Reaves of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Funeral service will be held Monday, April 19, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Wrenn Funeral Home chapel, with Mr. Billy Meinsen officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Wrenn Funeral Home Sunday, April 18, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m.; and at other times at the residence of Mary Bernice Gray, 1019 Carolina St., Roanoke Rapids.

JANE C. REDDISH
RALEIGH - Mrs. Jane Clark Reddish, 87, of Springmoor Retirement Community of Raleigh, formerly of Dunn, died Thursday.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday from First Presbyterian Church in Dunn. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara R. Sills of Raleigh; grandson, James Sills Jr. of Mt. Olive; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Nancy and Michael Harrell of Raleigh; two great-grandsons, Daniel Harrell and Evan Harrell.
The family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m. Sunday at Skinner Funeral Home in Dunn.
The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Dunn, 901 Park Avenue, Dunn, N.C. 28334.

ADA MARIE COMBS SANDY
NEWTON GROVE - Mrs. Ada Marie Combs Sandy, 74, of 3660 William R. King Rd., died Friday, April 16, 1999.
Graveside service 3 p.m. Sunday at Hayes Chapel Christian Church Cemetery, Garner. Rev. Kelton Hinton officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday night at the funeral home and at the home of Carol & Dennis Crumpler at 925 Powell Drive in Garner following the service.
Surviving: husband, Eugene B. Sandy; daughter & son-in-law, Carol and Dennis Crumpler of Garner; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Frank and Katherine Sandy of Newton Grove, Joe and Gayle Sandy of Mechanicsville, VA; grandchildren, James, Laura, Leslie, Chris, Joanna, Ryan, David, Lowell, David, Shanda, and Joy; sister, Mrs. Rachel Lee of Tabor City.

JOHN C. "J.C." SINGLETON SR.
WASHINGTON - John Charles "J.C." Singleton Sr., 71, died Friday, April 16, 1999. He was a retired Federal Crop Insurance Adjustor, an avid hunter and fisherman. Memorial was held at 3 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Washington.
Surviving: two sons, John Charles Singleton Jr., Marshall Wayne Singleton Sr., both of Washington; sister, Gloria S. Howard of Washington; two brothers, Bonnie E. "Googie" Singleton Jr. and Marshall Todd Singleton, both of Washington; one grandson, Marshall Wayne Singleton Jr.
Memorials may be made to the Sudan Temple Crippled Children's Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 490, New Bern, NC 28563 or a charity of one's choice.

THOMAS T. SIZEMORE
CARY - Thomas T. Sizemore, 67, of Ocean Creek Drive, Myrtle Beach, and Cary, NC, died Friday, April 16, 1999 at his Myrtle Beach residence.
He was born January 1, 1932, in Mobile, AL, a son of the late Thomas T. and Earl Maree Sizemore.
Mr. Sizemore moved to Myrtle Beach, SC in 1988. He was owner of The Auto Glass Center in Cary, NC and a real estate investor.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie McLemore Sizemore of North Myrtle Beach, SC; a son, Andrew E. Sizemore of Franklin, OH; a daughter, Terri E. Sizemore of Ashville, NC; a brother, Robert Sizemore of Foley, AL; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, Myrtle Beach, SC.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

ESTHER KATHERINE SWAYER
RALEIGH - Esther Katherine Swayer, 91, of Raleigh, died Friday, April 16, 1999.
Mrs. Swayer was a retired school teacher from Brooklyn New York, an avid bird watcher, and a world traveler. She moved to Raleigh in 1990 to be closer to her family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Surviving are her sister, Ruth S. Murphy of Raleigh; and her nieces and nephews, Katherine Lail of Wendell, Philip Murphy of Atlanta, Ga, Loretta Wall of Raleigh, Edmund Murphy of Denver, CO, and John Murphy of Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road. Burial will be in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 18, 1999 from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brooklyn Bird Club, c/o Ruth Murphy, 909 Chatham Lane, Raleigh, NC 27610.

BONNIE BROWN TEW
BATH - Bonnie Brown Tew, 53, died Friday.
Funeral service 4 p.m. Sunday at Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro, with the Rev. James M. Daily officiating. Burial in Edgecombe Memorial Park, Tarboro.
Mrs. Tew was formerly of Tarboro. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Beaufort Community College. She was the past Hospice Program Director for Pitt and Beaufort Counties. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Tarboro.
Survivors: husband, M. Grant Tew; son, Troy Tew, Bath; daughter, Leslie Schnering, Palmetto, FL; mother, Lorene M. Brown, Tarboro; sisters, Mary Hilda Wilkerson and Cynthia Gail Brown both of Tarboro; grandchildren, Taylor and Anna Grayson Tew, Bath; Emily and Jonathan Schnering, Palmetto, FL; a niece and several nephews.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro, and other times at 909 Chestnut Street, Tarboro.

WILLIAM "BILL" WEATHERLY V
WARRENTON - William Henry "Bill" Weatherly, V, 36, of Warrenton, died April 15, 1999. Mr. Weatherly was an Elizabeth City native born June 29, 1962 to William Henry Weatherly III and Alice Venable Jones Weatherly of Elizabeth City. Mr. Weatherly was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City and Duck's Unlimited. Mr. Weatherly was a Detective with the Warren County Sheriff's Department.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Warren County Middle School by the Rev. Marvin Aycock and the Chaplain for the Warren County Sheriff's Department, Lee Joyner. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Jacqueline Phillips Weatherly of the home; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronald C. and Janet L. Phillips of Zebulon; one sister, Dorothy Dandridge "Dee Dee" Wilkins of Weeksville; brother-in-law, Doak Wilkins; niece, Tara Britton Wilkins; nephew, Dustin Doak Wilkins; uncle, Alpheus Jones Jr.; aunt, Katy Jones; cousins, Brad Jones and Alice Jones.
Family will receive friends at the Warren County Middle School on Saturday from 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the William Henry Weatherly Memorial Fund c/o BB&T Bank, Main Street, Warrenton, N.C. 27589.

GARLAND WHITLEY
ZEBULON - Garland C. Whitley, of 715 N. Church Street, died April 15, 1999 at Rex Hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Burvis Whitley and his mother, Maude Glover Whitley Snead.
Mr. Whitley was the owner of Whitley Tire, Inc. for the part 32 years. He held a degree in Master Automotive Technology, was a former member of the Zebulon Lions Club, the North Carolina Tire Dealers Association and the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday at Zebulon Baptist Church. Burial, Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: his loving wife of forty years, Anne Winstead Whitley of Zebulon; brothers, William Whitley of Zebulon and Sam Whitley of Middlesex; sister, Joyce Whitley Eatmon of Middlesex; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening 7-8:30 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home, Zebulon.
Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to Zebulon Baptist Church Building Fund in Garland's memory, P.O. Box 366, Zebulon, N.C. 27597.

CAROLINE C. PARKER
GOLDSBORO - Caroline Cobb Parker, 60, of 1709 Evergreen Ave., died Thursday at her home.
A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Carol Collier Cobb and was the stepdaughter of Virginia Cone Cobb. She was the executive director for Keep Wayne County Beautiful and was on the board of the state Keep America Beautiful program and a member of the national committee for Keep America Beautiful. She served as president of the 1998 North Carolina Big Sweep. Mrs. Parker was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church and Wayne County Committee of the North Carolina Society of the Colonial Dames of America. She graduated from St. Mary's College and attended the college of William and Mary.
Mrs. Parker was active in several civic organizations and served on numerous agency boards. She championed many causes during her professional and personal life, focusing on the needs of the poor.
She served on the boards of the Wayne County Mental Health Center, the Salvation Army, Wayne United Way, the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the Goldsboro Board of Education. She also served on and led the boards of the county Social Services Department, United Church Ministries, the Goldsboro Housing Authority and was the governor's appointee to the Neuse River Basin Regional Council.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 11 a.m. from St. Stephens Episcopal Church with Rev. William Brettman officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Dale Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, E.B. Borden Parker; daughter, Caroline Whitehead Doherty and husband, Robert Godfrey Thomas Doherty of Willow Springs; son, Thomas W. Whitehead III and wife, Susan Hawfield Whitehead of Raleigh; brothers, John C. Cobb of Goldsboro and William Borden Cobb Jr. of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Thomas Walter Whitehead IV and Caroline Connemara Doherty.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Memorials may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 200 N. James Street, Goldsboro or the charity of your choice.

MARY E. SKINNER ACAI
Devoted Mother
LITTLETON - Mary Elizabeth Skinner Acai, Warren County native and landowner, died Sunday, April 18, 1999. She was the daughter of the late John L. and Temperance Clark Skinner and was born at her ancestral home, Linden Hall, on November 5, 1922. Known by her family and friends as Betsey. She began her education at Littleton High School. She later entered Peace College in Raleigh, where she became a member of Pi Theta Mu Sorority. As a young woman she volunteered as an administrative assistant for her father, John L. Skinner who was at that time State Treasurer of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. In 1941 she married Stephen Andrew Acai of Donora Penna, the former two times All-Conference, All-American football player for North Carolina State College and Captain, United States Army. They made their home throughout the U.S. until U.S. Army Major Acai ended his military career.
Mr. Acai preceded his wife in death on February 17, 1962. Mrs. Acai was a lifelong member of the Littleton Presbyterian Church, church deacon, Women of the Church, Sunday school teacher, church choir, youth group leader and was involved with Presbyterian Point Camp for Youth. In addition she was a member of the Royal Hart Lodge Eastern Star. In 1976 she was appointed to serve on the Bicentennial Committee of Halifax County. She also was affiliated with the North Carolina Forestry Association. Mrs. Acai devoted much of her time to the Club Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America and in her later years to Lakeland Cultural Arts Center.
She is survived by two sons, Stephen Andrew Acai, Jr. of Raleigh, John Skinner Acai and wife, Sallie White Acai of Littleton; daughter, Mary Blake Acai Gay and husband, Richard Harrison Gay of Littleton; five grandchildren, Stephanie Alston Acai and Avera Elizabeth Acai, both of Raleigh, Richard Harrison Mosby Gay, Elizabeth Blake Nicholson Gay and Mary McKenzie Clark Gay, all of Littleton; step-grandchild, Richard Allen Gay of Springfield, Ohio; sister-in-law, Sue Dossett Skinner of Littleton; two nephews, William Thomas Skinner, IV and wife, Laura Webb Skinner and John Little Clay Skinner, all of Littleton.
She was preceded in death by her brother, William Thomas Skinner, III.
Funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at the Littleton Presbyterian Church with the Reverends William Nicholson Clark, Jr. and Dr. David Douglas, McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at the Thorne-Clark family cemetery in Airle, NC.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Harrison Gay, 96 Flower Orchard Road, Ferncliff, Littleton, NC on Saturday, April 24 from 7-9 p.m.
Blaylock Funeral Home in Littleton is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Peace College Memorials, Attn: Betsey Skinner Acai Memorial Fund, 15 E. Peace Street, Raleigh, NC 27604.

FRANK BENDER
RALEIGH - Frank Bender, 71, a former resident of Elkins and Buckhannon, and a resident of Raleigh for the past several years, passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 20, 1999 at his residence. He had been in failing health, however death was sudden and unexpected. Born March 18, 1928 in Huttonsville, he was the son of the late Norman and Missouri Louk Bender. On September 13, 1948 he was united in marriage to the former Eleanor Roy who preceded him in death on May 15, 1996.
Mr. Bender is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Bob "Kathy" Hombeck of Elkins, Mrs. Dave "Debbie" Swisher of Fairmont, WV, Mrs. Jeff "Jo" Aebi of Raleigh, Ray "Sharon" Coley of Nashville, NC, and Mrs. Jeff "Ann" Begley of Raleigh; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brad Bender and wife, Sheila, and Brian Bender and wife, Traci, all of Raleigh; sister, Pauline Banks of Lubbock, TX; brothers, John Bender of Aliquippa, PA, Bud Bender of Akron, OH. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Jeremiah Shaw, Jason Howard, Matthew Howard, Sarah Howard, Kyle Begley, Brandon Begley, Zachary Begley, Alex Begley and Emerald Michael.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents and wife were two sisters, Betty Porter, Barbara Bernard Jaggie and one brother, Eugene Bender.
He was employed by Elkins Tire Company for many years until becoming disabled. He then - along with his wife, Eleanor, owned and operated Benders Market in Buckhannon for over 10 years until moving to Raleigh. While living in Elkins he was an active member of the Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Dept.
Friends will be received at the F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel after 5 p.m. on Friday, April 23rd.
Funeral service will be conducted from the Runner Chapel at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Rev. Frank Collier, pastor of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and Rev. Walter Blough will officiate. Interment will follow at the Mt. State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, WV.
The F.E. Runner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Frank Bender.
