N. PALM BEACH, FL - Charles Thomas Barber, 63 of 1200 Marine Way died Thursday. He was formerly of 744 Winston Rd., Clayton.
Funeral service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC.
Family will receive family and friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

LOUISE W. BECK
DURHAM - Mrs. Louise Waters Beck, 76, of 1605 E. Geer Street, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, died Saturday in Durham Regional Hospital.
A native of Jones County she had lived in Durham since 1943. Mrs. Beck was employed with Doyle Griffin State Farm Insurance Company, prior to her retiring in 1988.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, John Roy Beck Jr.; one son, John Roy Beck III of Durham; one daughter, Sarah Beck Reeves of Durham; one sister, Olivia Vincent of Durham; one brother, William F. Waters of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Kelly Nicole Reeves of Baltimore, Md., Sarah Kristen Reeves of Raleigh, Jonathan Forrest Beck of Durham, David Ryan Beck of Durham.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, annex B, section 6. Officiating will be the Rev. Burke Raper and the Rev. Don Sanders.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church.
The family will receive visitors at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home Monday night from 7-9.

ETHEL M. DEAN
RALEIGH - Ethel Mason Dean, 78, died Saturday. Funeral, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Sugg Funeral Home Chapel, Fuquay-Varina. Burial, Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: son, Ronald Dean and wife Betty of Raleigh; daughter, Margaret Roberts of Raleigh; six grandchildren; one great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Moter S. Dean.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. today at Sugg Funeral Home in Fuquay-Varina.

ALICE C. GRADELESS
KINSTON - Alice Cuthrell Gradeless, 88, of 1603 West Road, died Sunday, April 25, 1999. She was a former nurse at Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven, preceded in death by her parents Peter Stapleford Cuthrell and Lena Hooker Cuthrell, her husband Rev. Robert Gradeless, sisters, Hannah Brown, Eleanor Broome, Nellie Cuthrell, brother, Harold Glenn Cuthrell and grandson, David Gradeless.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Howard-Carter Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Randall Baker officiating . Burial, Gradeless Family Cemetery, Belhaven.
Surviving: daughter, Jane Phillips and husband, Albert of Kinston; son, Jim Gradeless and wife, Marianne of Kill Devil Hills; grandchildren, Linda Hill and husband, Randy of Kinston, Jimmy Gradeless of Kill Devil Hills, Bobby Phillips, Jimmy Phillips and wife, Vicky of Wilmington; great-grandchildren, Joe Johnson, Erin Hill, Courtney Hill, Kelly Gradeless and Chris Gradeless.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at home of her daughter at 1603 West Road, Kinston, N.C.

ERVIN H. HODGE
WENDELL - Ervin H. Hodge, 84, died April 22. Funeral service Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Riley Hill Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Barbara H. Manning (Herman) of Durham, Wanda Jones (Melvin Jr.) of Wendell; sons, Clyde E. Hodge (Gloria) of Fort Worth, Texas, Jesse L. Hodge (Betty) of Wendell; brother, Edward C. Towns (Omer); one step-sister, Estelle Wright; seven grandchildren; five grandchildren. Visitation 3-8 p.m. Monday at William Toney's Funeral Home, Zebulon.

JULIA H. INGRAM
ZEBULON - Julia Hall Ingram, 80, of 402 Pearce Road, widow of Jim Ingram, died Sunday. Funeral service 3 p.m. Tuesday at Wakefield Central Baptist Church. Burial, Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Norwood Pritchett of Raleigh; grandson, Lance Pritchett of Raleigh; sister, Hazel Hacker of New Bern; brother, Jack Brinson of New Bern.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Massey Funeral Home, Zebulon.

RIVERS DUNN JOHNSON JR.
KENANSVILLE - Rivers Dunn Johnson Jr., 77, of 148 South Country Club Drive, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his home.
Visitation is Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Warsaw Baptist Church.
Johnson was married to the former Faye Frasier of Burgaw.
He was born March 23, 1922, in Warsaw, the son of the late State Senator Rivers D. and Olivia Best Johnson.
He is a Warsaw native and practiced law in the district from 1952 until early this year.
Johnson graduated from Warsaw High School in 1940. He attended Staunton (VA) military Academy and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1947. He studied at UNC-CH law school and later studied law under the late Claude Love of Asheville, a former dean of the State Senate.
He succeeded his father in 1958 as a member of the State Bar Council, and is a former attorney for the Town of Warsaw. He served on the State Bar Council from 1958-85, was chairman of the Grievance Committee for 10 years, and thereafter served on the Judicial Standards Commission for six years.
Johnson joined the U.S. Marine Corps in the V-12 program at UNC-CH and entered active service in 1943. During World War II, he served in Hawaii, Guam, and the then Republic of China.
He reentered the Corps during the Korean Conflict and served at Camp Pendleton, CA. While there, he was selected for Naval Justice School at Newport, R.I., where he received training in military law.
While at UNC, Johnson played on the freshman football team, and played baseball for several years. During the early stages of World War II, he and the Tar Heels played against a baseball team from the Pre-Flight School at UNC against major-league players, including Hall of Famer Ted Williams.
Johnson was active in civic activities, his community, and the Democratic Party. He is a past president of the Warsaw Jaycees, Warsaw Rotary Club and Duplin County Young Democratic Club.
He served as president and on the board of directors of Duplin Country Club. He was a member of Warsaw Baptist Church.
Johnson is survived by a daughter, Mary Lynn Hardee of Kenansville; a son, Rivers D. (Buster)Johnson III or Robersonville, and his wife, Mandy; two brothers, Vivian B. (Hawk) Johnson of Green Level, and his wife, Chick; and John Anderson Johnson of Warsaw, and his wife, Helen B.; and three grandchildren, Justin Daniel Pittman (21), and Brooke Olivia Hardee (14) of Kenansville, and Hannah Elizabeth Johnson (7) of Robersonville.

MABEL GREEN JONES
BEAUFORT - Mabel Green Jones, 94, of Beaufort, died Saturday, April 24th, at Harborview Health Care Center. Mrs. Jones, a native of Whittier, NC, was a retired Carteret County school teacher and business woman. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Benjamin Leecraft Jones.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Ocean View Cemetery with Rev. William Rickman Pinner, pastor of Ann Street United Methodist Church, officiating.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-laws, Sarah J. and Roger Williams of Beaufort, Carol J. and Frank Gillikin of Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren, Len'e Pauline Carter and Darrell Rogers Williams, II both of Beaufort, Frank Sterling Gillikin, Jr. and wife Lynda of Virginia Beach, VA, Benjamin Leecraft Gillikin and wife Karen of Norfolk, VA; four great-grandchildren, Lessie Len'e Carter, Alexander Leecraft Gillikin, Luther Sterling Gillikin and Chandler Adams Gillikin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Robert Safrit Sunday School Class, Ann Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Drawer C, Beaufort, NC 28516.

HERMAN MIMS
RALEIGH - Herman Mims of 2207 Trailwood Drive died Thursday, April 22, 1999. Funeral service to be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 26th at Haywood Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. A.E. Matthews, Jr. officiating. Burial takes place at Carolina Biblical Gardens. Family visitation on Monday at the funeral home from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.
He leaves to cherish his memories: daughters, Jean Mims of Raeford and Peggie Cotten of Raleigh; sons, Otis and Irving Mims, both of Raleigh, William and Joseph Mims, both of Washington, DC; sister, Pauline Griffin of Raleigh; several nieces, nephews, his nurse, Andy Edwards, a host of other relatives and friends.

RACHEL J. TAYLOR
ROCKY MOUNT - Rachel Jeffreys Taylor, 74, died April 24, 1999.
She was born in Nash County, August 29, 1924, daughter of the late George and Effie Batchelor Jeffreys and was preceded in death by her husband, John Julian Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Taylor's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended First Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Philip Bartholomew of Rocky Mount, Dianne and Horace Ezzell of Wilmington; sisters, Louise Lewis and Mittie Tanner of Rocky Mount, Addie Marks of Whitakers, Bertha McEwen of Woodbury, N.J.; half-sisters, Majorie Finch and Faye Radford, both of Louisburg; half-brother, George Jeffreys Jr. of Campolello, S.C.; grandchildren, Lisa Ezzell, Georgia Ezzell, Mark Bartholomew and David Bartholomew.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue with the Rev. Ray Williamson and Rev. Reuben Batchelor officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Wilson. Family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of the daughter, Cynthia, at 1816 Willow Glynn Road, Rocky Mount.

JOYCE SUTTON WILLIAMSON
WILSON - Joyce Sutton Williamson, 64, died Sunday. Funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday, Joyner's Funeral Home by the Rev. Joseph Creech. Burial, Evergreen Memorial Gardens. She was born July 24, 1934.
Surviving: husband, Urah T. Williamson; daughter, Jennifer W. Williamson of Wilson; son, Urah T. "Buster" Williamson Jr. of Wilson; sisters, Mary S. Bass of Wilson, Betty S. Eubanks of Union, S.C.; brothers, William D. Sutton of Wilson, Bobby E. Sutton of Wilson; three grandchildren.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 U.S. 264 West.

ROGER A. BADHAM
RALEIGH - Roger A. Badham, 47, head of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Meredith College, died Sunday morning, April 27, 1999. He had been battling a brain tumor for one year.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hall Badham; daughter, Layston Madison Badham; sister, Paula Nadler and her fiance' Mervin Wavell of Hoddesdon, England; parents, Mercia and Arthur Badham of Buntingford, England.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 30, 1999 at Christ Episcopal Church. Roger was a deacon at the Episcopal church. He will be interred at Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery in Madison, VA on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meredith College, designated for the Department of Religion and Philosophy, c/o Institutional Development, Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27607.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh.

JESSE BANKS SR.
RALEIGH - Jesse J. Banks Sr., of 1111 Kitt Place, died Sunday. Funeral services 11 a.m. at Lea Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, Carolina Biblical Gardens.
Surviving: daughters, Pamela Joyce Banks of Silver Springs, Md., Carolyn Denise Bellamy of Williamstown, N.J.; sons, Jesse J. Banks Jr. of Raleigh, Eric Jerome Banks of Garner; brothers, Danore Banks of Durham, Charlie Banks of Spartanburg, S.C., Mallie Banks Jr. of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren.

JOSHUA THOMAS GROOMS
APEX - Joshua Thomas Grooms, 24, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 1999. Mr. Grooms "Josh" grew up in Raleigh and was a graduate of Broughton High School and Western Carolina University. He was a sales representative for Automation Accessories, Inc. in Cary. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at North Raleigh United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at Camp Ground United Methodist Church, Fayetteville.
Josh is survived by his wife, Samantha J. Grooms; parents, Rebecca Jones of Raleigh, Tommy and Sherry Grooms of Charlotte, and Ron Jones of Greensboro; brother, Kevin Grooms of Charlotte; sister, Tracy Fuller Wright of Chapel Hill; paternal grandparents, Howard and Gertrude Grooms of Fayetteville; maternal grandmother, June Jones of Mebane.
Josh was a loving husband, son, grandson and brother. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends 7-9p.m. Thursday, Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road, (876-6900).
